    Account Approval

One of our most commonly received questions is regarding account approval. The process is very simple and straightforward, but first I'll outline what limitations are in place for unapproved accounts, and what access is available to unapproved accounts.

All unapproved accounts have access to posting in the following forums:
    • Help Desk
    • Introductions & Departures
    • Main Lobby
    • Creative Forums
    • Writer's Circle

All unapproved accounts do not have access to posting in the following forums:
    • General Roleplaying Forums
    • Epic Roleplaying Forums
    • Forum Games

All unapproved accounts have access to viewing all of our forums.

Now on to how the approval process works. To get your account approved all new arrivals are required to participate in our introduction forum and must post their own introduction thread, as well as participate in a brief intro period. After getting your introduction post up and engaging in a brief period of positive interaction within our community forums (Main Lobby, Writer's Circle, and Creative Forums) an administrator will approve your account.

Please note that all accounts are automatically flagged to be reviewed when they meet the above criteria. We check all accounts marked for review at a minimum, daily. If you aren't getting approved this isn't because an Admin hasn't noticed you, it's simply that you likely haven't been active enough for your account to be flagged to the admins for review yet. Conversely if you just spam half a dozen three word posts to trip the system into flagging you for review, when we actually go to review the content and only find spam posts, we likely won't approve the account until it has generated more meaningful content.

This process is typically brief and painless and approval can be expected within the first 24 hours for engaging posters who put in a little time and effort. For less active posters the process can span several days or more. You will receive a trophy notifying you once your account is approved.

We understand that this may be seen as an inconvenience to some, but our intent is to create a smooth transition into Storyteller's Circle, and to ensure that new arrivals have taken the time to understand what our website is about before diving in head-first. This process also ensures that we can get a feel for who you are and what you're bringing to our site, as well as for you to get a feel for who we are and what we can offer you. For us community is foremost, so connecting with the community is the first step to joining Storyteller's Circle. People who are patient, friendly, and genuinely interested in becoming a member of our community should have no trouble becoming approved.

    Site Rules

Our site rules are easily accessible via the rules tab in our navigation bar, but I'll include a link here for those who found their way here first. This is largely a disclaimer to new arrivals that while we don't have many rules, the rules we do have we take very seriously. All new users are expected to read and become familiar with the rules, and failure to read them is not an excuse for not abiding by them.

We do our best to maintain a very open, friendly, safe, and supportive environment here on Storyteller's Circle. Our rules are in place to ensure this.

    Joining a Roleplay

This is likely one of the most daunting aspects of getting situated on a new website, which is why it has warranted its own section within this guide. First and foremost, if your account has not yet been approved see our account approval section before proceeding. You will know if your account has been approved when you recive a trophy informing you that you can now post in the roleplay areas of the website.

The best place to look for available roleplays is our bulletin board.

This is our one-stop recruitment board for players and GMs alike. We have a thread available for people who prefer being approached to join roleplays, rather than doing the approaching.

For those who are more comfortable with a direct approach, interest checks and recruitment threads are regularly posted here advertising for new players. Simply browse through and reply to any threads that catch your eye.

The open/full thread prefixes denote if a roleplay still has room for more players.

    Thread Tabs

The ability to add tabs to existing threads is a feature available across all of our general roleplaying forums, and our epic roleplay forums. The following is a simple screen shot showing how to add tabs. Note that only the person who started a thread may add new tabs. Also note that additional tabs don't add additional forum pages. They're more like notepads attached to your main thread. The thread starter can use them to store information or to embed google documents or images, but others cannot reply to them.

Once you click on the +Add Tab button, the following window should appear. It fully supports all the features and BBCodes that a thread post supports.

    Embeding Google Documents

The ability to embed google documents is very simple, but not intuitively obvious as it requires one to publish their google document first. The following screen shot shows you where to do that.

First you'll want to go to file > publish

That will open the following window. No changes need to be made here. The link option should be selected by default, and all you need to do is hit the publish button.

Once published it will provide you with a link. All you need to do to embed the document on the website is to copy the link and paste it into any post or thread tab. No bbcode is necessary.

The following is the result of an embeded google document. The published page is automatically updated/re-published every 5 minutes or so (on googles end). This means edits made to the document won't immediately show up on the site, but will after a few minutes. Note that if you want to get rid of the excess white space around the text, you will need to go into file > page setup and set the margins all to zero and the page layout to landscape. You can also edit the document background color in the same location.

    Watching Threads/Forums

Our forums support watching threads and forums which will send you an automated alert when people post into watched forums, or reply to watched threads. These can be easily toggled on and off from any forum or thread.

    or

You can also toggle your default settings to auto-watch threads you have posted or replied to, as well as your default e-mail settings in the following location.

Please be mindful that these automated options will only apply to newly watched threads. Any threads you had watched prior to altering these settings, will retain their old settings. To change the watch/e-mail status of previously watched threads you need to access your watched threads listing. It can be found at the bottom of your watched threads page.

The above link will take you to a full list of all of your watched threads, rather than just watched threads that have new replies. In here you can toggle the watch/e-mail status of individual threads, or all of your threads at once via the manage watched threads button.

    Creating a New Roleplay

Creating a Roleplay can be a very daunting ordeal on a new website as you try to familiarize yourself with it. This guide will help to walk you through the basic steps to start up a roleplay.

First, our roleplays are broken down into three types: single thread roleplays, multi-thread roleplays, and epic roleplays. This guide will touch upon all three.

Single Thread Roleplays: Single Thread Roleplays are as they sound. They're generally small scale roleplays with only a handful of players following an established storyline and the entire in-character content of the roleplay is contained within a single thread. These are the most common type of roleplay and the easiest to setup. One simply posts an interest check in the bulletin board to screen for potential players. This is where all interest-check and recruitment threads belong.

Once enough players have been attracted to fill your needs you can slide on over to the play-by-post forums and create a thread in the appropriate genre for your players to start posting. This is where all of the in-game writing will take place.

We also have an Out-of-Character Discussion forum, and a Character Depository forum for people to use to help organize their roleplays as needed.

Multi-Thread Roleplays: Multi-Thread Roleplays typically follow the same mold as Single Thread Roleplays in that they tend to follow a handful of players following an established storyline, but are of a large enough scope to benefit from their own forum space. These can be requested via PMing Tiko and Dashmiel. Once the request is approved a sub-forum for your roleplay will be added under the appropriate genre forum.

Epic Roleplays: Epic Roleplays are very large, open-world roleplays with no singular plot-line. They're designed with the scope in mind of being able to sustain large numbers of players over multiple story-lines. Due to their sheer size and scope these roleplays require more dedicated forum space than other types of roleplays. Each Forum within the Epic Roleplay section is its own contained roleplay with its own sub-forums for organizing information relevant to the roleplay.

The Epic Roleplay guidelines and application process can be found under the Rules tab: Epic Roleplay Rules.

    Conversations

Rather than the traditional system of PMs(Private Messages), Storyteller's Circle utilizes a system of Conversations. These conversations function as private exchanges between users, but they also support multi-user conversations via the ability to invite more than one person into a conversation.

To start a conversation simply click on your inbox and select to start a new conversation.

Note that if you don't toggle the settings to allow it, only the conversation starter will be able to add more users to the conversation.

    Chatroom

Our chatroom is full of various features and settings so this guide serves to outline them in full. To start it off though, one must first access the chat. This can be done via the chat tab at the top of the screen which will open a full window chat. I highly recommend this method for mobile devices.

or via the site wide bottom bar chat, which will remain visible at the bottom of your pages as you navigate around the site.

To disable the bottom bar chat you need to disable it in the chat settings. This will only disable the bottom bar, and you will still be able to access chat via the chat tab.

Once in the chat, an array of settings and options are available via the settings and options buttons. Please make use of them! If you don't like gifs, instead of getting upset at people posting gifs just fix your settings to display images as links. Don't like the forum post announcements? You can simply disable the bot messages.

There are also a series of in chat commands available via the help button, or by typing /help. Most of these settings are pretty straight forward but I will elaborate on some of them here.

    /whisper or /w
    [IMG]
The [ ] brackets around the username are required. You can also use /w in place of /whisper. Another method of sending whispers is by clicking on the user name in the user list and selecting the whisper user option. Lastly if another user whispers you, you can hover over the whisper to see who all is included in the whisper and quick reply via clicking on it which will auto copy the whisper command and names into the input bar.

    Joining/Adding Rooms

To join new rooms, you can simply click the + symbol next to the room tabs.

Adding rooms is equally simple via the add room button in the upper right corner of the chat window. Right above chat options. User created rooms are auto-pruned after a period of inactivity. To request a permanent OOC discussion room be added for a roleplay, simply contact Tiko or Dashmiel
