How did you discover roleplaying?

Hi, my name is Drakel...

I was once a normal person, like everyone one else. A normal boy...

Then one day I went onto the computer, on the interwebs... That is where it all started. Where I... I discovered RPing by accident.

*wipes away tears*

I've been suffering the addiction of wanting to RP and even... GM ever since.

RPing is the rabbit hole we've all fallen down and the only way out... is through...

But seriously though, my brother recommended that I take up RPing, and he got into it through an RPing subforum on a comic website he followed. I don't remember why I agreed to start RPing really- I just remember feeling bored and RPing was something creative that I could devote my time to, and actually feel like I was growing from.

I initially just joined in a heap of open-end casual RPs to boost my confidence, but I eventually just got too dang cocky and tried to host my own game...with only a month of RPing experience. Needless to say, it was a big mistake. The RP was actually pretty popular whilst it lasted- it was Divergent themed, and its release coincided with the release of Insurgent, so it got a lot of interest. The issue was I was way too ambitious with my plans, and- with school and heaps of personal commitments going on at the time- I couldn't keep up with the player base (not to mention we were on 2 completely different timezones). The game truly died when one of my most active players copied and pasted my Sign-Ups sheet with several words difference and claimed that the game was "The American Edition" of my game (I'm not even kidding) and that it was made with "My approval". With the entire player base gone, I stopped GMing for a while and got back to playing games ran by when better RPers than me. Eventually, after learning from some of the best writers I've ever met and alot of advice, I was able to improve my writing and host my own game properly.

I've been RPing for almost 3 years now, and have met some great people and learned so much more about writing since; that's the best part about Roleplays- they build communities of creativity, and are a great place for people like me to turn their shamefully bad writing into something they can be somewhat proud of.

I stumbled upon a very freeform RP that was in progress on a random forum related to a game that I quite enjoyed, having never partaken in an RP of any form before, my interest was quickly piqued, and I ended up participating in said RP for about three years.

Looking back, it wasn't the best RP, but it was a lot of fun, and it taught me most of what I know about play-by-post RPs. I've been trying to work back to what made that RP so fun, while bumping up the quality of my writing and characters along the way.

Also, sadly or perhaps happily, I've been chasing that literary/cooperative writing high ever since (here's to finding something like that again).

I started with Minecraft. No, not just the forums, though that had something to do with it, I started on a Minecraft Roleplaying Server. The point of the server was essentially roleplaying like on a forum in the context of the game. I have evolved as the RP scene seemingly dried up in Minecraft Multiplayer, much to my dismay. Now I play on forums and good-ol'-fashioned Pen and Paper games (D&D and friends).

I miss those old servers. I remember being told Minecraft Roleplayers and PVPers really hated each-other at one point, and seeing as how there are now PVP servers and not RP servers, I guess that's one battle lost for us. *sighs deeply*

When I was younger, I commonly played house, or spies, or doctor, or other games that were basically LARPing but very, very dumbed down. Then I played a game called Whirled and learned the whole chat roleplay, like "*hugs you*" and all that.
I found out it was called roleplaying, and found a website called Freeyourselfroleplaying. Spent soooo long on that site, like, from twelve years old to fifteen years old. It was shut down a while back, because it became a straight hot mess.
In the sense of writing, I've been roleplaying for like, 4-8 years. 4 for novel-type writing, and 8 for the "*fights*" type roleplaying.

Signed up for a Fan Fiction account, stumbled upon a Legend of Zelda forum. I was fourteen, so don’t expect me to bring it up much. Old shame and all that.

ah old memories. Mangafox forums back in the day. I did those on a whim manga inspired RP's with bad romance and weird clichéd and not so well written action scenes. XD

I have seen some of it again lately and honestly im glad it's just memories now they are so much better then the real texts :p

I picked up Role-playing from FanFiction when I stumbled upon the idea to make a Roleplay forum. I even joined a couple of groups and now, I have come here.

Started on MSN Messenger with friends which then progressed to writing FanFiction and FanPlays and then Forum RPs. It also moved to Warcraft RP. Then Silence showed me this place after I met ims on another forum./ Been RP'ing now for nigh on 10-15yrs

I played a certain game, found my way to the forum of said game, exploring the various subsections I stumbled upon a freeform RP, and the rest is as they say history.

It was a complete accident. When I was young I was heavily involved in Fire Emblem. Loved everything and eventually discovered Gamefaq's held forums where that sort of thing could be talked about. I got involved spending time on the forums (Mia vs. Zihark still pops up on occasion) but nothing seemed abnormal until I stumbled on the topic of someone writing fanfiction for the games. From there I quickly learned about forum-based roleplay and grew interested until I eventually joined one or two RP's and I've been at it for more than a decade now.

i found roleplaying completely by accident...i went to a Comicon and fell in love with the idea of becoming a whole 'nother person and escaping our reality.

My brother and I regularly role played since we were pretty young. Books and video games fed into our natural creativity. I will admit I'm not always at my best, but I love to use it to build my characters into proper people.

I'm not actually to sure, I remember I started a long time ago when I was like 13 or something, I think someone suggested it to me. But I can't really remember ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The internet came out and I was looking up something related to My Little Pony on some fan site, and there was a chat room. And then it all just snowballed from there.

One of my friends introduced it to me, and I think that once I get approved I’ll have a really good time doing it. It looks like a lot of fun!
