"Woah... hey, Geno, check it out! These look like somethin' we'd see back in our world!" Mallow excitedly exclaimed, dropping his fearful mien to fawn over the grazing Chocobos like a small child. The little, fluffy prince would've undoubtedly provoked the beasts had his wooden guardian not rushed over to stop him from getting too close.

"I know you're homesick, Mallow, but we don't have time to be nostalgic," Geno commanded with his usual sagely self, turning to Jihl and crossing his arms beneath his cloak and shooting a nod to Jensen. "That... 'guy' we avoided isn't too far behind us. I don't know about you lot, but I'm still curious about that voice. Let's get this show on the road already!"

With that being said, the star-possessed puppet buckled his legs and sprung from the ground before grabbing on to a dangling branch and swinging himself into the dense cloud of leaves hanging overhead. He reemerged at the top of the tree, nonchalantly planting his feet on the highest branch and scanning the green horizon for any notable landmarks.

Mallow, who was nowhere near as agile, let out a fatigued sigh at his partner's grandstanding and returned to admiring the Chocobos.

The Chocobo's seemed very welcoming to any form of touching and petting, letting out a friendly kweh! as Chris gave the closest one a pat. "Docile birds aren't they? I wonder..." Jihl casually strode up to one of them and soon enough they rest of the group found her mounted on it. "As I suspected. These aren't wild chocobo's, they're domesticated. Everyone! Grab yourselves a chocobo!I believe it's time for use to speed up this journey considerably."

Geno quickly found Shelke tagging after him with some amazing agility and as he reached the top she quickly popped her head up next to him. "What do your eyes see?"

Looking over the horizon Geno would see that the forest seemed to be far and vast stretching out to either side. However he spotted what appeared to be smoke in the distance. Could it be smoke from a chimney or something else? Either way it was the only sign of life that he could see. Shelke's eyes as well transfixed on the area where the smoke was rising. "Seems we found something."

"They're friendly... Thank goodness." Ramza put a hand onto the back of one of chocobo's and gave it a friendly pat. He had been around plenty of them back in Ivalice, but wasn't the most familiar with riding them himself. "I suppose it won't hurt."
He hopped onto the birds back, giving its head a comforting pat.

Hiro gave Chris a concerned look, but luckily the Chocobos seemed welcoming to the younger boy.

Patting Chris on the head after checking to make sure he wasn't hurt, he motioned to Chris then the Chocobo, as if asking if he wanted to ride it. Hiro also tried to check if three people could ride one Chocobo since he highly doubted Maribel could well...ride or steer one.

Maribel simply rolled her eyes and went up to the one Chris was petting, hands on her hips. "If they're domesticated then just do they belong to?" She wondered aloud, before she decided that wonderign about it wasn't really the best idea.

One expected this from the sister that ruled over the Land of Deserts in Midgard, but she also expected that Two would perk up soon enough to overshadow her woes about the wrong attire.

With that remark, Aya decided to continue on into the sudden forest as well. She found the cover of trees a lot more ideal than the heat of a desert without the proper attire and resources. A forest had its own share of dangers, but no progress was going to be made by just wandering the empty desert any longer.

There weren't exactly any guarantees the forest itself was the right direction, but given how little they really knew about the current situation, perhaps just following the mental compass to its final destination was the only real choice they had.

"Be on your guard, then. As long as we're prepared for what's inside, nothing suspicious can get the jump on us. I just hope this isn't another maze..." Geno piped up in response to some of the party members speculations upon the green forest sprouting in the middle of a barren desert. Geno could practically feel a malevolent presence whispering from within the wooded shrouds, sending prickles up his superficial wooden exterior. With only a cool smirk in response, the cloaked puppet boldly stepped into the shrubbery.

Without much negotiation, he seemed to join Jhil at the very front of the group, opting to lead them on through the forest.

Mallow, meanwhile, could trace the presence of a gloomy forest back to... Geno himself, really. A winding forest maze filled to the brim with scary monsters and mushrooms that really, really didn't look like they were safe to eat. It was a cruel irony that the nimbus prince was throwing himself into another forest maze, this time with the forest puppet himself leading him on as opposed to Mario.

"...Hoo. Alright... guess this is better than nothing. Let's go!"

Mallow tightened his grip on the Froggie Stick, waddling after Geno into the depths of the forest.

Thought the hero didn't want to go into the mirage, it seemed he had no choice as Maribel would grab him and Hiro by the shirt and drag them into the mirage as it would seem. Maybe things wouldn't be going so bad after all.

"Life finds a way after all," Jensen briefly quipped toward Shelke as they navigated through the mysterious forest. Still, the girl was right. A structure like this defied all common sense and logic, though... considering every bizarre turn this venture had taken already, maybe Jensen was the one who ought to throw out his own preconceptions of possible or not.

Of course, for all intents and purposes, he and Jihl were... a bit accustomed, moreso than just anyone else might realize.

As the cry was heard from deeper within the forest, Adam went on guard once again, letting out a soft breath. "Stay back, sir. I'll look into it," Jensen said to Charles, before warily stepping forward to investigate the sound.

The sounds were becoming more clearer as Jensen found reprieve in the the thick forest as a clearing opened up before him.

In the clearing Jensen spotted a number of large bird creatures cheerfully walking around and scratching the ground with their beaks to find something to eat.

"Ah, of course it was chocobo's." Jihl appeared behind Jensen and looked over the scene in front of them. "While not the same breed as the ones from my world, their frame is quite...distinct."

Shelke had as well caught up to them now and was investigating the the birds. "We should be fine...they are usually harmless unless provoked."

Jihl chuckled. "To think this smelly bird would be a constant shared among us! Though I am glad we didn't once again stumble into a lion's den." The chocobo's didn't seem to mind the group for the time being, continuing on with what they had been doing before their arrival.​

He had no feeling toward the creatures that others might have otherwise found cute, so he didn't even feel inclined as to pet them. "We should get a move on, then. It was a cute looking animal, certainly not something she'd have initially labeled hostile in any case, and a nice reprieve from the monsters they'd encountered. She hadn't really seen an actual animal like this, even if that was simply par for the course at this point, but it resembled a bulkier emu.

In any case, her curiosity didn't overtake her desire to just get this adventure done with. Moving to lean against a tree, she crossed her arms without a word for now, silently agreeing with Jensen's notion. Though she kept an eye on the clumsy seeming kid, neither wanting him to get hurt or aggravate the birds somehow.

Lucca found herself marveling at the bizarre transition between desert and forest. This was definitely no Oasis, no... It was... Something else entirely, but what could have caused such an anomaly? It defied most if not all aspects of science to her understanding, but perhaps it wasn't quite science that was the cause of all of this.

In fact, something about it reeked of magic to her.

Ultimately, her train of thought was interrupted, not by the flock of birds that flew overhead, but ultimately by a number of large bird-creatures. Thankfully they were docile, but these creatures were unlike anything she had seen, even during her travels through time and space itself.

"... Chocobo?" She said, tilting her head for a moment.

Eventually, she dared to pet one... Following the lead of the otehrs and gently mounted it. It was a little awkward to do without a saddle, but all the same, it did indeed make their journey faster.

However, it was only once she was riding the strange bird-like creature that Lucca suddenly thought to ask a simple, but important question.

"Say... What do these Chocobos eat?" She asked.

If they were going to just ride them to who knows where, she figured she would have to know how to properly feed them... Just incase their journey took numerous days.​

The puppet had to squint to recognize the pillar of smoke, but once he did, he looked to Shelke while pointing a hand in its direction. "Looks to be smoke coming from that direction... unless you know about a geyser or hot springs around here, that isn't natural."

"DO YOU THINK IT'S A FOREST FIRE?!" Mallow's voice came shouting from beneath the hedge, prompting Geno to roll his eyes and slip down through the foliage, sticking a perfect landing on the ground right in front of Mallow.

"No telling. It's the only indication of life we have, though..." the puppet's voice trailed off as he crossed his arms and looked between Jensen and Jhil, giving them a confirming nod. "It's our best move to pursue it for the time being."

"W-well... if it isn't a forest fire, then it has to be something important. Geno is right, guys, we should get a move on!"

Chris was happy as the bird didn't seem to get angry when he would touch or pet it, letting out a friendly kweh. He had done a good thing and he watched as the mean lady had climbed onto the bird and seemed to be riding it. It seemed that the bird was a lot stronger then they appeared to be. He had done a good thing and was smiling when the group was told to grab a chocobo nd ride it. He wondered who they belonged too, but didn't say it a loud though.

Chris awkwardly smiled at the older brother figure and nodded, showing that he did want to climb on the chocobo.

Charles just mounted one without a word.

Chapter 2 - A slight respite


"Well we clearly have our course set then," Jihl replied as Geno and Shelke returned back to the ground. "Grab yourself a chocobo and we'll be on our way. If need be they should be able to carry two passengers. Let us be off!"

When everyone was ready Jihl, with a light kick to the side of the chocobo, zoomed away into the forest towards where they had seen the smoke. Despite the heavy vegetation the group found that the chocobo were doing most of the work for them as the zip and zoomed through the forest with uncanny speed.

None of them quite knew how long they had been riding but soon the forest was giving away to another clearing. On the other side they could see a small village of sorts. "It was a village..." Shelke replied slightly amazed at the sight. To most of the group it seemed like something taken out of a fairy tale picture book with the small cozy huts. To others it was just atypical village in the countryside.

Jihl rode up next to Shelke and surveyed the area. "No sign of life on the streets, at least that I can tell." She jumped off the chocobo who let out another kweh! before it ran back into the forest. "Come, let's see what we have stumbled upon."

"Well we clearly have our course set then," Jihl replied as Geno and Shelke returned back to the ground. "Grab yourself a chocobo and we'll be on our way. If need be they should be able to carry two passengers. Let us be off!"

When everyone was ready Jihl, with a light kick to the side of the chocobo, zoomed away into the forest towards where they had seen the smoke. Despite the heavy vegetation the group found that the chocobo were doing most of the work for them as the zip and zoomed through the forest with uncanny speed.

None of them quite knew how long they had been riding but soon the forest was giving away to another clearing. On the other side they could see a small village of sorts. "It was a village..." Shelke replied slightly amazed at the sight. To most of the group it seemed like something taken out of a fairy tale picture book with the small cozy huts. To others it was just atypical village in the countryside.

Jihl rode up next to Shelke and surveyed the area. "No sign of life on the streets, at least that I can tell." She jumped off the chocobo who let out another kweh! before it ran back into the forest. "Come, let's see what we have stumbled upon."

Lucca still wasn't quite sure what to make of these Chocobos, but at least they seemed friendly enough... Even though they were quick to leave as soon as they reached their destination.

At least she didn't have to worry about feeding them, right?

Hopping off of her own Chocobo, and giving it a light pat on the head, she surveyered her surroundings, tapping her foot as she soon realized the town was quite empty.

"No sign of life huh... So where did that smoke come from?" She asked, pushing up her glasses slightly, which had begun to slip off during her ride on that Chocobo from earlier.

One of her hands reached for her blaster, just incase she needed it, but for the time being... She just looked to be trying to figure out what was up with this seemingly deserted town.​
 
Dropping to his feet once more, Jensen remained silent. His thoughts were a mystery as his expression betrayed nothing, his mind a mystery obscured by the spectacles covering his eyes. Certainly, another new development was one to focus his mind toward, but here and now, they were hardly any closer to figuring out how they got here or how to get back to where they came from.

Whoever that voice was from before, the thought still tortured his mind; what was their aim?

He kept on moving forward silently, figuring that he could only hope his question would be answered later as they moved further in.

❝ Byeeeee! Thanks for the ride, fluffy birdie! ❞ Two waved off the Chocobo that she rode on, watching it return to the folds of the forest once she dismounted. As she was busy with that, One was more cautious with what they've found upon reaching this empty village. The smoke didn't bear anything good that must've taken place in this location.

❝ Hush your tone, sister. Do you intend to give away our location to whatever remains in this abandoned village? ❞ The older Intoner silenced Two, telling her to lower her voice with her own whispering voice. After getting an alerted nod, One silently stepping forward and surveying their surroundings. What could be possibly here before them?

" Place feels kind of fucking unnatural to me. I don't trust it. It just seems that every place has something potentially dangerous to us and I don't think this will be any different."

" Be positive, maybe there are nice village people here," Chris honestly said.

" Okay, then I'm positive it will be bad news."

Grtting off and patting the Chocobo's hide, Hiro waved as the flock of birds left their group. Bamboo spear in one hand, he decided to cautiously entered the village.

Hiro gave Chris a pat on the head and a smile, giving a nod of agreement. They had to stay positive on this adventure!

Maribel on the other hand frowned deeply as she trudged behind Hiro, dagger in hand and rolling her eyes at her silent friend.

Ramza seemed sad to see the chocobo go, as they were the the one thing of familiarity he had in this situation, and with them leaving, he felt a bit sad. As the others in the group headed towards the village, he trailed just slightly behind, glancing around them for any sign of life or movement.
 
As the group came closer to the village it was clear to them that despite the quiet muddy streets there no doubt were people living there. Produce like different colored fruits could be seen in stalls as they walked. While they were a number of buildings around one that had a sign that said 'inn' on caught Jihl's attention. "Perhaps we will find inside someone that can help us?" She went to inspect one of the applecarts nearby and picked up one. "One would assume there are people living here, considering how fresh all these fruit and vegetables look."

" Well, either one of two things is happening here. Either the fruit and stuff is a trap or we are going to meet some nice people," he said, picking up an apple from the cart and biting into it.

Chris looked worried for his dad doing that and if he thinks anything will go wrong, he will knock the apple out of Charles's hand.

"Maybe they're all out on a trip together," Adam lightly quipped, but even so, he shared Jihl's curiosity. Indeed, if this was supposed to take on the appearance of a well lived-in town, then where are the people living in it? Still, even if more and more questions kept piling up, that only pressed him forward even more to keep looking around for the answers that up to this point were nowhere in sight.

Letting the others examine the fruit to their liking, Jensen walked toward the so-called inn, attempting to make his way inside from there if possible.

❝ Talk about weird. Hopefully whoever owns these happens to be nice... ❞ Two only expressed genuine confusion as to what this could mean, looking over the various fruits and vegetables in the cart. As the blue-haired Intoner tried to make sense of this for herself, One silently made her way to get inside the inn. It doesn't make sense for a fresh food cart to be stationed near this inn and the owners not having signs of ever being in the inn in the first place.

True to Geno's suspicions, the ominous pillar of smoke rising in the distance happened to belong to some form of civilization. The star warrior managed to grin (as much of a grin he could manage with his uncanny wooden face), thankful for the fact that this unusual place wasn't completely devoid of people. Mallow was nowhere near as subtle in his relief - an obtuse sigh left the little cloud's body, followed by a wide, dopey grin to paint itself across his face.

"Whew, finally! I was getting worried we wouldn't find any real natives in this place. I could go for a snack right now..." Mallow murmured, rubbing his tummy as he waddled along with Geno. The gang always told him it was a bad idea to snack on those Yoshi cookies, but those dinos are baking artisans.

"... Hold it."

As the group encroached on the town's muddy streets, Geno's grin quickly vanished once he was able to get a better look at the town's interior, which was eerily absent of actual people. A wooden hand promptly emerged from beneath the puppet's cerulean cape, blocking his fluffy prince's path. "Something about this doesn't seem quite right," he said while quickly glancing around his flanks for anything particularly dangerous.

"Ugh, come on, Geno! You're the most pessimistic optimist I've ever met!"

Ignoring Mallow's protest, Geno looked back to Jhil. "I advise we move cautiously through this place. Something about it makes my wood crawl..."

"Huh? How does wood even crawl? Are you actually the puppet, or the... star... thing taking over the puppet?!"

Geno shrugged, dismissive by the accusation. "Perhaps they're one and the same."

The fluffy prince looked like he wanted to retort, but all he mustered was a grumble beneath his breath about forests, mazes, and arrows before stomping off after Jensen and Two towards the inn. Geno chuckled coolly as Mallow left in a huff, crossing his arms and moving deeper into the town to investigate anything besides the Inn.

"That sounds expensive..." Mallow naively doted on Adams quip, cupping a hand around his... well, where a chin would be if Mallow weren't a walking ball of fluff. "I hope they got some insurance if anyone breaks their stuff while they're gone. Sounds like something Mario would do."

Jihl stayed behind for the time being listening to the people argue and talk with a smug look on her face as she pushed up her glasses. Shelke meanwhile followed Adam towards the inn. If he attempted to open the door he'd find it to be locked.

"A locked door implies people," Shelke responded off hand before knocking on the door. It took awhile before they could hear someone on the other side of the door.

"Who are you! What do you want?" The mysterious voice asked.

"Travelers seeking shelter, is this place open?" Shelke replied her head leaning to the side as she said so.

Again there was a long silence before the two heard the door unlock and swing open. In front of them they saw a short, stout fellow with a thick heavy beard. "Rally-ho strangers! We don't see many visitors in the area...or any in fact! Tell me, how did you arrive to our village?" The man gave the two a friendly smile as he awaited an answer.
