❝ Whew... that's over with. ❞ Two let out a breath of relief once it was clear that the deranged woman was put down, putting away her greatsword. It soothed her greatly that no one would have to succumb to such vile acts any longer in this village. However, the blue-haired Intoner noticed her sister staring at the corpse of the cannibal silently.

❝ Sis? What's up? ❞

❝ ... it's nothing. Nothing of dire importance. ❞ One waved Two off, brushing away the younger sister's concerned gesture. Something about that woman's behavior was too... extreme for a normal person to achieve on their own, through normal means of course. It beckoned a morbid curiosity in One's head, but she held her tongue.

Mallow immediately cringed at the horrible sight of the woman's maimed body slopping against the ground like a wet towel. He was quick to divert his gaze in the opposite direction, releasing a little sigh of exhaustion and relief at the conclusion of this little encounter. Mallow fixated his beady eyes on the dirt in front of his feet, finding it challenging to form his usual dopey smile in the face of sudden, potentially avoidable death.

If he needed any proof that this wasn't his world, this is it. Stealing a particular coin for a quick profit might be mean, but that's the small extent of malice that Mallow has faced. The sharp increase in brutality was tiring - as he and Geno got roped into a world that was a couple of notches up on the overall violence scale.

Speaking of, Mallow was thrust out of his stupor when a wooden hand clapped him on the back. Geno smirked, defying the lifeless nature of his temporary body's face. "Chin up, Prince Mallow. We got a lot more ahead of us."

"Ha, r-right..." the prince meekly responded. The fact that Geno was able to punch that lady's jaw off cleanly was more than disconcerting. For what little Mallow knew about the mysterious puppet, he knew that he wasn't the type of overtly regret things like that. At least one of them is still confident in the face of overwhelming dread.

Geno confidently looked ahead. The star warrior did not react to the result of his attack - nothing that could be read on his face, anyway. Like a real soldier, he shook off the gruesome outcome by taking the opportunity to bring the group back into focus. He crossed his arms beneath the cloak and approached the rest of the party.

"For what it's worth... I suggest we get going as soon as possible before we find ourselves in another fine mess like this," Geno commented, gesturing to the cooling corpse.

Mallow waddled forward, joining in his comrade's urgency. "Geno's right, guys! I don't think it's a good idea to stick around... this."

"It is as good as dead," Jihl replied still looking over Joy. "But you are right, we should be on our way. The tower wont find itself."

"You were looking for a tower?" The innkeeper asked. "We might know of it."

This caught Shelke by surprise. "Didn't you tell us that you had no clue about a tower?"

"I...might have lied. I wasn't certain if you would have stayed and help us if I had told you the truth." The innkeeper seemed embarrassed as he spoke. "The tower you seek is beyond that ridge." He pointed to the opposite side of the village. "Sand will be in your way once again, but you will see it over the horizon. Please, rest for a moment and we'll give you food and water for the journey. It is the least we can do for those that saved our village."

"Scratch my back and you scratch ours, huh? Well, no harm, at least," Adam said calmly as the innkeeper revealed his deception. It seemed that no matter what dimension any of them were in, people everywhere were always equally incapable of being so direct, but it was familiar to Jensen, and in a strange way, that gave him some small comfort, like a reminder of home.

Besides, he couldn't be too mad if they were offering food and rest as a sort of reward.

The augmented man gave a brief gaze toward where the tower supposedly was and took a mental note of it, before nodding to the innkeeper. "Fine by me, and I imagine the rest of us agree," Adam said, as though presuming to speak for most everyone around, "I could go for a nightcap if nothing else."

Chapter 3 - Beacon of Hope

The innkeeper was true to his word and allowed the group to eat and drink to their hearts content and sleep at the inn. When all of them woke up the village also provided them with rations to survive the journey ahead.


Having said their farewells the group continued following the path that the innkeeper had instructed them to follow. They still had a lot of forest in their way but the further they got the less vegetation they found until soon enough the only thing in their way was rocks and deadlands. Among the stone slabs they also noticed other shinier rocks. “Well if those aren’t telling us we’re getting closer I certainly don’t know what would,” Jihl quipped as they traveled through the rocky terrain. Sure enough, there it was.

A tall crystalline structure was sprouting out of the ground reaching high into the sky. “Well isn’t that a sight? Come on then we’ll be there any moment now.” They journeyed on and soon found themselves at the steps of the tower. There didn’t seem to be anything in their path except a large gate barring their passage. Were they going to find the salvation that was promised? Or was doom the only thing waiting for them inside?

"I don't suppose we can just knock on the front door and waltz on in?" Adam quipped lightly toward Jihl, before activating the Smart Vision within his augmented eyes once again, scanning the gate to see if there was anything particular about it at all; if it was open (in which case, he'd attempt to do so), and if not, how sturdy it was, if there was any locking mechanism to it, and so on.

He didn't care to say much during the trip to the gate, after the night had come and gone. His dreams were as empty as always. Memories of before. As Jensen asked that the group, not including Jihl and Shelke, received another vision inside their minds of the door opened and four floating crystals. The vision subsided and the door shook before slowly opening for them to enter.

"Or perhaps it will just open for anyone?" Jihl mused and waltzed into the forayer. Much like the outside everything inside was made of the same sparkling crystal. There wasn't much interesting worth investigating on the bottom floor except a spiral staircase that was attached to the walls going upwards. "Quite bare, don't you think?" Jihl said aloud as she looked upwards. "One would have hoped for an elevator."

"Guess they didn't think to hire an interior decorator," Jensen mildly quipped in response to Jihl, also looking up at the spiral staircase, giving a quick scan with his Smart Vision for anything that might be out of the ordinary, before walking forward to get a move on.

The deeper they ventured into this place, the more questions seemed to pile up inside the man's mind, and yet, it was nothing he wasn't used to. As they said, it was always darkest before the dawn. He knew he would only get more and more questions before getting even one answer, and a part of him didn't even think twice about it anymore, but the other had to wonder. Why here? Why everyone here? And what was everything leading to? The answer seemed so close, yet just barely out of reach.

"It's obvious that this place wasn't meant to house people for an extended period of time." She looked to the stairs before looking right up where the spiral staircase went around the wall. "It's like a lighthouse of some sort. But what needs guidance in a desert?" Jihl followed Jensen up the stairs as did Shelke. It felt like the stairs went on forever, with no windows it was hard to say how high they actually were when they finally reached the highest floor.

There they met with a circular room and a door on the far end flanked by four crystals. On the left; a blue and red one. On the right; a green and a yellow. "Well isn't this something?" Jihl went to inspect the crystals and noticed that they could be pushed into the wall. "It appears we can do something with these..." She said seemingly not keen on trying to experiment for herself.

Adam had no response to Jihl's inquiry, only silently continuing to move forward up the spiral staircase. Though the vast amount of stairs didn't tire Adam -- considering his augmented legs and even his lungs -- even he was able to take notice of the seemingly incessant trek.

It didn't help for perhaps the others, at least as far as Adam could imagine, the potential anxiety of the prospect of finally coming closer to finding out the truth about their situation here, the simultaneous hope and dread that always came with such unpleasant truths, but Adam wasn't here for a particularly pleasant time.

As they eventually reached the circular room, he walked over next to Jihl as she inspected the crystals. As though picking up on what she said, the man let out a soft sigh and stuck his arm out. "Looks like," he said dryly, deciding to be the guinea pig. Something he was used to, for better or for worse.

And with that, he started by pushing in the blue crystal, seeing if that would do anything.

"Such tall and poised figures..." The woman scanned the group in front of her, the younger in the group being met with a piercing glare that made them feel like she was staring right into their soul. As the door broke down to reveal the subtly menacing individual behind, Jensen was just a hair away from pulling the trigger at the assailant, but the eerie calm admittedly caught him off-guard. Perhaps it was just as well as she didn't immediately attack, so Adam relented for that moment, if only also because One also spoke a bit.

To that end, considering how Jensen expected the so-called monster to be just that -- a literal beast, the thought occurred to him to perhaps learn more about the mysterious force. His instincts -- that of the need to find the truth even when neck-deep in a web of mystery and intrigue -- took over, and his mouth opened faster than he'd realized.

"Why...? Why are you doing this? What need do you have for the children?" He questioned gruffly, keeping his hands tightly poised on his gun just in case, still aimed carefully right at the woman.

To keep them safe...inside of me." Her chuckle turned more into a giggle as she twirled her weapon around. "Are you like me? Travelers, engulfed, confused...lonely. I can help you with that."

"This woman is certifiably insane." Jihl had lost all interest to listen to this woman. "She has clearly cannibalized the people of this village. Children, Jensen. Let's put this mad dog out of her misery and be done with it."

Chris looked over at the woman from behind his "big brother" figure. He didn't really have anything to fight with and just hide behind them, not sure what he could do.

Charles had actually saved some of the soup and taken the bowl with him and tossed the soup at the strange woman's face.

The cannibal woman seemed to work on instinct as she started the fight by slashing Charles' bowl clean in half before she blocked Two's greatsword with her own weapon. She was clearly outmatched by the group perhaps because of that instead of continuing the fight outside she instead went into the thick of the hut making it harder for the ones with projectile weapons or magic to not also hit their own as the battle raged.

As she did the women spotted Chris and a wide grin formed on her face. "It's okay if you struggle, it will only help to work up my appetite!" Even being in the thick of it was poising problems for the deranged woman, Mallow's blow landed true and seemed to disorient her for a bit but even then she fought like a wounded animal. One way or another, someone was going to die.

Shelke's lightsabers went through the woman's abdomen and as the woman left out her final death gurgle the village went silent. Only interrupted by Jihl's clapping. "Bravo, excellent work, Shelke."

"It...was a group effort." Shelke pulled her sabers out from the corpse as she looked around the group with a pleased smile.

"This will surely net us some favor with the villagers. Come let's go and meet with the innkeeper." That however would be unnecessary as the end of the fight had caused every still living villager to exit their houses.

"You did it," He said amazed. "And to think that this woman..." He looked down at the corpse. "What possess a being to do something like that?"

Lucca Ashtear

As it soon became clear what the woman did to the children of the village, Lucca felt a wave of nausea hitting her... But even through that, she managed to fire off a few stray shots. Unfortunately, her aim was way off, but at least the rest of the group was able to pick up her slack.

Shaking off the nausea after the battle was over, Lucca swore to steel herself against further incidents like this, realizing just how disturbing some of the people they encounter might be.

...

All the same, after all was said and done, at least they were able to get to the tower in the distance; the Inn keeper had withheld a bit of information on it, worried they wouldn't stop to help them otherwise.

After a relatively peacefull night, full, and well rested... In spite of what she had experienced the day before, she was ready to head to the tower, even giving the Inn Keeper a cheerfull goodbye. It was like yesterday had never happened, at least for now.

As they entered the tower, the vision Lucca got, alongside most of the group made her wonder... Especially after seeing Adam push the blue crystal.

"A puzzle?" Lucca asked, tilting her head.

Regardless of if she got an answer, Lucca decided to follow up Adam's action by pushing the green crystal.

Assuming both did nothing on their own, she figured the next logical step was to push the rest of them too.​
 
Chris Eriksen and Charles Eriksen

Chris looked at the crystal and looked at one of them, he tried to push the red one into the wall. He wasn't sure if he was strong enough, but he wanted to try. Charles sighed and helped his son push the red into the wall as well, assuming that it was probably not heavy.

As Jensen pushed the blue crystal in it would blink once and stay inside the wall. Lucca pushing the green one made it blink three times, pushing the blue one as well as the green on out. Finally the red one would blink two times but not stay in the wall either.

"It appears there is a pattern to them," Jihl replied pushing her glasses up on her nose, again nothing seeming very keen on helping.

" Blue seems to be first, so I think it goes Blue first, red second, green third and yellow last. That is if the blink's are indication of their placement order."

Charles blinked. " That actually makes sense. So maybe we work together and do that.

Testing the theory the father and son duo got to work pressing in blue, red, green and yellow in unison. It seemed to have worked as all four crystals stayed inside the wall blinking in unison as the door rumbled open allowing them to enter inside.


Even before they stepped in the group could see a radiant light coming from inside the chamber. Stepping in they found in the center of the circular chamber there was a large crystal floating in mid air.

"It's...pretty..." Shelke responded stepping into the chamber to get a closer look.

"Yes, very, but what help is it going to give us? It does not seem to be mobile or anything. It's just...floating there."​

"... Huh. Not bad," Jensen murmured idly as the puzzle was solved without much complication, letting the door open, confirming that it was all a complicated mechanism, and before it lay a large crystal floating in the air, as though suspended, though the man's Smart Vision wasn't able to detect anything like wires or ropes keeping it in place.

In fact, it couldn't detect anything. Just the crystal by itself, as though floating through magic. It was at this point that Adam realized he was almost already getting used to the bizarre world and its rules without him even knowing it, but then, adaptability was key to surviving in the unknown after all, wasn't it?

"I wonder though, is this what that voice was directing us toward?" He idly wondered. Indeed, it seemed like there wasn't much else for his attention to be drawn toward, so there had to be something significant about this crystal, but what, exactly, was lost on Jensen.

If Jensen went closer in to inspect the crystal, he would find that inside the radiant light he could see a shape inside of it. Again the group felt a sharp pain in the head, stronger then what it had been before, as a vision of a small crack on the crystal materialized in their minds eye. As the vision and pain subsided Jensen could spot the crack. With enough force he could probably crack it further.

"... Tch!"

Adam reeled back lightly as he felt the sharp pain in his head, only for it to subside just as abruptly as it came. There was definitely something significant about this crystal, but what exactly to do with it was as much a mystery as just about everything else here. And yet, before he knew it, there was suddenly a crack visible within the crystal; it was then that the object as a whole looked much more fragile than it was before. Funny how such a small crack could make the whole thing look so unstable.

Just like a person, huh?

Considering the others were likely waiting on him to decide what to do from here, Jensen decided to take a forward, yet careful approach, unveiling a blade from his augmented arm, before thrusting it forward into the crystal, not sure exactly of what would happen from there.

What had been a small crack now was a fissure that spread over the entire crystal. More and more cracks were forming and the entire crystal tower was shaking. The once welcoming glow was now being devoured by a dark purple light that was shining through the cracks. A violent shockwave pushed everyone in the room back as the crystal finally shattered in a flurry of black feathers as it revealed its contents.

Where the crystal once floated was now a woman dressed in a red dress and black wings on her back as she floated slowly to the floor. See seemed dazed and confused for a moment before her attention was aimed squarely at the group, a calm smirk crept up on her face. "Ah, my saviors, I thank you from releasing me from my prison. I imagine you have a lot of...questions. Perhaps I can provide you with the answers you seek?" Whoever this person was it was clear that she had an aura of darkness around her. Was she someone the group could trust?​

"Ngh?!"

As Jensen gathered his bearings after being knocked back, setting his sights on the mysterious new woman who appeared before them all of a sudden, he narrowed his eyes, almost instantly feeling uneasy around her as he could definitely feel her dark aura, even though scientifically speaking, there was nothing out of the ordinary about her, or so his Smart Vision could detect.

Still, he kept cautious, keeping the glass lens over his eyes as though to hide his full expression from her.

"Fine, then. Let's talk, and start simple. Who are you? Did you bring us here?" He asked forwardly. The strange woman spoke with an enigmatically familiar tone, but maybe that was just his imagination. He couldn't be sure; he couldn't ever be sure.
