Battle Royale: Taiwan [IC]

Asher Falcon

Asher had been so lost in his own thoughts, that he barely registered that someone had sat next to him or for that matter, two people had sat in front of him and one behind him. He wasn't sure why, but he hadn't expected the front to be so popular if this was what everyone said it was. He was still hoping that it wasn't, but he was also a realist and quite honestly, that was the darkest part. He was a realist. He took a deep breath and counted to ten in his head and turned to the girl over sitting next to him and by extension, the girl behind him. " So, hi. How are you today?" He asked.

Fuck.

He had screwed that up badly. She was just doing just as badly as him. He was such a moron. " I'm Asher." He wasn't sure what else to say.

@Minerva @Lady of the Lake

Chen Shu-ling

Shu-ling was still mentally trying to calm down. Still mentally trying to process everything. She didn't even realize who she has sat next to. She probably would have sat next to Xia or any other of her good friends in class if she was paying attention.

Wait, so what if this really is the dreaded Battle Royale? She couldn't imagine taking someone's life or someone being willing to take her's. She felt overwelmed. She closed her eyes and silently recited the Lord's prayer.

" So, hi. How are you today?" He asked.

Fuck.

He had screwed that up badly. She was just doing just as badly as him. He was such a moron. " I'm Asher." He wasn't sure what else to say.

Shu-Ling opened her eyes and look at who she was sitting next to. She realized that she was probably sitting next the peer in her year that she knew the least about. Especially since he was new here.

Ashing?
She thought, questioning her memory. She knew he sat relatively near her, though she sat farther back, so she was most familiar with the backside of his head.

Oh, Asher, that's right.

She was terrible at names. She gave a brief smile, the weight of their situation heavy on her mind still, but the distraction much needed and welcoming. She replied in English, though her accent was stong.

"Hey Asher. I'm Shu-ling." She gave no explination that she had recognized him from their home room because she wanted to be polite and didn't want to embarrasse him.

She them replied, "I'm doing...." she trailed off, struggling to find the right word. Not that she didn't know English well enough, but she didn't want to cause panic or fear. She didn't want to cause other's harm. "...okay." She didn't want to dwell too much on herself. "How are you doing?"

She was trying, but it felt very forced. She was terrified, and therefore frozen. It was difficult to do anything at the moment.

Asher Falcon

Though Asher would never admit it, he was panicking a bit himself, having an uneasy feeling. He wanted to believe that everything was going to be fine, but he wasn't sure if he believed himself. He however kept this all bottled up inside, like any American would.

He had heard the term Battle Royale, but he wasn't sure what it meant. He imagined that it wasn't a good thing though if everyone was not doing well from it. He wondered if it was what it sounded like, a death match of sorts.

How was it that he had been in this country for so long and had barely covered the history or knowing about anything? He was thankful that he had picked up on the language or he would have felt absolutely terrible.

He wished he knew why, but he felt that they had met before. He really sucked at remembering his classmate's faces. Names were easy, but faces not so much though.

" Hi, Shu-Ling." He slightly recognized her from homeroom, but he hadn't known her name until now. As surprising as that was, he barely remembered faces of them most of the time.

Asher wondered if there was a different word that she wanted to use, but there was so much that he didn't want to say. " I am doing okay to say the least. Though I could be better, I guess I'm just nervous about this field trip," he honestly replied back to her, not wanting to cause her to be upset.

@Lady of the Lake

Xia looked up from her phone when Asher and Shu-Ling introduced themselves. She smiled at both of them. "Hi, Asher, hi Shu-Ling." She said with a slightly upbeat tone, trying to bring in some positivity. "I'm Xia Feng. It's very nice to meet you two." She brushed part of her hair back from her face.

She was slightly nervous about what it could be, but she was optimistic. Maybe it was just a very secretive field trip to a secret government facility. If it did turn out to be Battle Royale, it wouldn't hurt to make a few friends and allies so she wouldn't end up bloody and dead on the first day.

She smiled again at the two.

Two more people entered the bus. The first was a slightly heavyset male. He was sweating profusely and wore glasses, however, his clothes were nice and tucked in. He seemed to be of the "Computer Nerd" stereotype. He tapped his fingers together as he counted the seats, finally sitting in Seat 18. He looked back at the two outcasts and at the soldiers behind them before turning around to look at a book in his hand.

He was followed by a much slimmer man. His clothes weren't in order and he looked like he hadn't combed his hair. In his hands was a worn Bible and a rosary. The young man looked sort of like a Mormon Missionary who had been out all day and then ate a messy dinner. He sat down in seat 6 after giving a brief nod to Shu-Ling.

@Emory @TheGreenerGrey @Lucky @Lady of the Lake

She didn't answer him, not at first. With her position in the back, she had a clear view of others on this bus which was another reason she took it. Hence, she could keep a wary eye on her fellow classmates and gauge their reactions.

Those two for example seemed easy enough. Already actively speaking to one another, and from their postures it was easy to guess what their topic was.

Rich brat. Cannon fodder. She turned her glance elsewhere.

She looked like how she felt, honestly.

And this was just the tip of the iceberg. So many in their class, friends and otherwise. All to take the chance of Battle Royale.

To the question, she brought her mic up and spoke in a harsh, synthesized croak.

"Well...I was always partial to Friday the 13th."

If this was going to be an actual thing, then perhaps she had a working model of which to do it already.

Hmmm...

@Minerva

The boy offered a small wave at the computer nerd as he sat down and then turned back to the topic of conversation. "Always a classic. My favorite's probably Alien. That's a good film." He said. "What kinda music do you like? I'm a fan of classic American Music, you know, bands like the Ramones on up to 2005-era Fall Out Boy. Shit like that."

"I don't listen to music." : |

She said flatly, discernible even through her mic. She sighed out, tense suddenly before she said quietly.

"Do you have anyone who'd miss you if you died?"

@Minerva

Hong Meiling had entered the bus, occupying Seat 1 so that she could stay far from the soldiers that sat at the back, as well as stare into the ruined scenery from the window. Her expression was stiff and unwelcoming, repelling most who wished to speak to her. It wasn't clear what Hong Meiling was, exactly, only that she was Hong Meiling, and that her sole activity as of now was staring out of the window.

Hong Meiling was not at all interested in socialising.

Hong Meiling wished to be alone.

Asher Falcon

Asher had barely registered that someone had been sitting behind them. So, when a voice emerged from behind him, he turned around to see her. He took a deep breath and looked over at her. " It is nice to meet you Xia Feng. I am happy to have met you too," he replied back to him, looking around.

Normally, he would have continued to talk to either of them, but now he was morbidly curious about the people who were in front of him. He looked over at both of them. " Could you excuse me for a moment? I want to introduce myself to the people who are in front of us," he said to the girls.

He tapped the back of the seat in front of him to get the attention of Kaspar and Jordan.

@TheGreenerGrey @Lady of the Lake @Emory @Minerva

@Lucky

Kaspar, deeply in thought, jumped at the sudden prod at his seat, turning with an impulsive twitch that sent the entirety of the left side of his face into a spastic convulsion. Trying to play it off smoothly he smiled pleasantly and greeted the other boy. “Hi there, I’m K-Kasper,” he said, his face burning red as he stared back down at the ground.

Asher could have sworn he had hit the seat in front of him, but it had turned out that he had hit both of the seats. Welp, he hadn't intended to do that, but the more friends, the better, he guessed. " Hey there, I'm Asher. It is nice to meet you Kasper," he said, smiling, not wanting to ask the person sitting directly in front of him name to Kaspar since it seemed rude.

Jordan glanced back at the person behind him, turning his head listening openly as Kasper and this Asher kid introduced themselves, before reaching his rather large arm back for a handshake.

“Yo. I’m Jordan. Jordan Warbellows. Whaddya need Asher?” He asks, easing his eyebrows just a bit and trying his damn hardest not the catch the gaze of Xia Feng. He might actually die before they even reached wherever they were going if she so much as smiled at him.

@Lady of the Lake

Shu-Ling stared at Asher for a moment. Was that what people were still thinking this was? A simple field trip?

Perhaps they were right, and that was all that it was. She should really calm down, but nothing seemed to be working.

"Hey Xia, I haven't seem you in a bit", Shu-Ling responded, trying to have a more normal conversation despite her nerves. Perhaps it was also because she didnt know Asher as well. It was true though, her studies have taken her away from her friends/fellow peers and she hadn't seen Xia in a few days. "Do you have any idea where we are going?" She hoped that Xia would have answers. She suspected that Xia's family had more connections, and perhaps she heard something....

She listened at Xia's response, as well as the conversation that Asher had stared with the people in front of them. She listened to it all, but none of it at the same time. she mindlessly fiddled with her phone, perhaps with the hopes to ease the nerves just a bit.

Asher was surprised when Jordan turned around to him and was even more surprised when he reached his rather large arm back for a handshake. He wondered if he was on one of their sports team, but shook his head regardless.

" It is nice to meet you Jordan. I just wanted to get to know the people around me. I guess it is my nerves and my own uneasy feeling about this 'field trip'. " He looked over at Jordan trying to avoid someone's gaze. He shrugged it off, not wanting to comment on it in the slightest.

Soon, the bus was full of people. Students were all loaded into the bus in one fell swoop.

The bus would start moving after Instructor Zheng and the driver got on following what looked like a small altercation. He would grab onto the pole by the stairs facing the group. He counted each person on the bus before signaling the driver. You drove through Taipei, on the newly built Escalated Highway that got a view of Taipei.

The city is much larger than it used to be, with large buildings surrounding Taipei 101. Large banners hang from some of them, with the flag of Taiwan on it. Another

As you crossed onto a bridge, everyone would feel themselves getting drowsy. It was very clear at this point that something was VERY wrong. "WE'RE BEING GASSED!" One voice shouted before devolving into a coughing fit. Those who could bring themselves to turn around would see the soldiers wearing gas masks.

Two hours later

Your eyes opened to a buzzing sound and the wash of artificial light flooded your eyes. If you looked around, the group was sitting in an all white room. Soldiers stood on the sides of the room, M-16's in hand. On your wrists was a small black bracelet, similar to a FitBit or smartwatch. Soldiers stood around the room, and Instructor Zheng stepped in front of the TV screen in the wall.

"Good morning, Third Years of Saint John Bosco Academy." He said. "You have been chosen by random lottery to participate in this year's Battle Royale." He looked around the room. "The Battle Royale program was instituted as a way for the government to control the population as well as a method to restore order during these chaotic times. The winner of the game will receive NTD29,115,000, a full ride to the college of their choice regardless of performance on Entrance Exams, and fame."

"Now, Miss Wen will explain this." He stepped aside, an attractive young woman stepped into the room. She was obviously supposed to make things better and was there for looks, but it came off more like badly shoving a cyanide pull into Valentines' Chocolate than taking a bitter pill with sugar.

She smiled at the group of students. "Good morning, I'm Meng Wen. I'm here to introduce you to the rules of Battle Royale." As she said that, a map showed up on the screen:

Oh7l81A.jpg

"Dongsheng Island, formerly the site of a military installation built in case of an attempted invasion of Taipei. Now it is the site of Battle Royale." She continued and pointed at the satellite image. "The island is 3 kilometers by 3 kilometers. There is a village on the south end, a lighthouse and port on the north end, a central mountain with a military bunker, and various other buildings scattered around. Your personal map will be more detailed. This is just a basic rundown."

"Throughout the game, certain areas will be known as 'Dark Zones'. Within these, players are not allowed to enter. There will be more of these as the game progresses." She held up one of the wristbands you wore. "These are your monitors. They do things like monitor heart rate, blood pressure, things like that. They're also programmed to administer a lethal injection if you remain in a Dark Zone for too long or attempt to pull them off. This injection is painless, but it will kill you very quickly."

At this point, it was almost creepy how she was talking about this in a calming and cheerful tone. "Now, you will all be given a bag with some food, water, and a random weapon once the game starts. You will be called by your name to step up and collect it once the game begins." She bowed and stepped aside.

Instructor Zheng stepped forward again. She cleared his throat and stared sternly at the group. "Now, before we begin, are there any questions?"

"A free ride to any college? And all we have to do is kill our entire class? Sign me the hell up!" Jordan speaks up from the background, anger evident on his face and sarcasm dripping from his tongue. These... these assholes had drugged him, transported him to what looks to be a goddamn island, put a death watch on his wrist, and now this colossal bitch was smiling at him like she was some sort of flight attendant.

"You're all sick, and I hope after you put us to death you look deep, deep within yourselves, realise nothing is there, and blow your goddamm brains out. It'll be faster than waiting for me to win. I have your faces, assholes." He had no idea why he was saying any of this. This woman alone could probably kill him with the injector, and the soldiers were armed. But it just... what the hell even was this!? He had never realised, when he was just watching, how this felt. The fear, the anger.

He didn't attempt to stand up or anything else that would definitely get him killed, just glared at the faces of every government employee in the room.

She wanted to laugh in his face, if it wasn't for the fact he was so earnest. It was a genuine question for her, a loaded one at that. She had no friends. Not since the Incident. By choice at first, before shifting to the norm as she closed herself in on herself. Nobody wanted to talk to the girl with such ample evidence of the hatred a parent could have for their child. Twisted they called her. Creepy. Unfeeling.

So she embraced those words, making it her own. She didn't need them. She only needed one.

She thought of her father, waiting back home and finally nodded.

One voice shouted before devolving into a coughing fit. Those who could bring themselves to turn around would see the soldiers wearing gas masks.

She sighed in vexation and made herself comfortable, slipping her mic into her pocket.

If they were going to knock them out (as though none of them knew what was being planned), she was going to damn well catch up on her sleep.

And so she closed her eyes.

Instructor Zheng stepped forward again. She cleared his throat and stared sternly at the group. "Now, before we begin, are there any questions?"

When she woke up, her expression was bored up to a point where she asked in a rasping, mechanical voice.

"Does this Battle Royale extend to anyone we find out there? "

She made up her mind regarding classmates. She'd play defensively, protecting the idiot with more to return to than her.

But if she found any of these government people in the arena, she was going all Jason Voorhees on them. She glanced at her arms, small and weak and huffed out with a pout.

.....Maybe Chucky would be a better comparison.

“J-Jordan,” he said in a quiet, almost timid voice. His hand found Jordan’s shoulder and squeezed ever so slightly. “Not-“ his left eye twitched impulsively. “-n-now.”

The girl speaking was attractive but her words chilled Kaspar to the bone. Dark zones huh? He wondered how they’d tell if they were in one of these dark zones yet he got the feeling they’d know it when they see it.

Once Instructor Zhang replaced the woman and asked for any questions Kaspar cleared his throat. “H-how are we entering t-the arena?” His voice was low but echoed throughout the room so that it carried to the Instructor.

"What the-"

Hong Meiling was in utter disbelief.

"- is this how it is now?"

Hong Meiling looks at the device on her wrist.

She was going to have to play this death game in order to attend the next level of education.

"Th- this can't possibly be happening, it has to be a joke..."

Just in case, she did not touch the device on her wrist. She gazed upon it.

"If this is how it can end, then I have no choice."

Hong Meiling knew she had to fight. She had no choice. She was no hero, but she wasn't a fiend either.

She was a pawn.

Asher Falcon

Asher looked around the room, uncertain of what to say. All of the questions that could have escaped his lips had been answered in a way. He choose to remain in silence for now. Of course, he wanted to be impulsive more than anything, but he wasn't going too. He looked at his wrist and waited for his name to be called. He was too smart to snap like the others. It was to be an unstable mess. He however did check to see if his pills were still close to him.

"I'll update you all!"

Shu-ling smiled a thanks as she turned back around. She listened to the chatter of the other students, but couldn't bring herself to say much of anything else. She had the theories, but she prayed that they were wrong.

She watched how the adults were conducting themselves, over-analyzing their every move, and then calming herself down, fiddled with her phone, just to over-analyze again... and so the cycle went. She was emotionally draining herself, she was on edge. She just tried to loose herself in the city as they drove deeper into the city. She enjoyed the city. Sometimes it was too much noise, and she preferred quite, but also the rush of the city was peaceful in its own way.

She caught glimpse of a man around the age of her father. For a moment, she thought it was him. But he would not be here in the city, he has his restaurant to run. It was not her father, but the sight of the man was enough to bring to surface great terror... She wishes, prays, she is wrong. She wants to see her family again. Silent, unnoticed tears run down her cheeks as she stares out the window. Her emotions were leading her to exhaustion.

Or at least she thought it was her emotions. Until some funny smell, almost a feeling, alerted her something was wrong, moments before a fellow passenger shouted that they were being gassed. She shot up, standing up in her seat, but the motion itself required a huge inhale of air, and she also fell into a coughing fit. As she sunk back down in her seat, she notices the masks that the soldiers were wearing. She felt little, but of what she did feel, it was loss of hope and faith in those that were suppose to protect her and complete, blinding fear. But the gas was more powerful.

Shu-ling was groggy from the gas and felt sick to her stomach. She tried everything that she could not to throw up. That would embarrassing. But she soon lost interest as her surroundings once again came into focus. She was in shock. So she froze, and fear, adrenaline, and all other crazy emotions that were rushing through her veins burned every moment into her memory. She had been scared before. But now she realized she could die. Very soon.

She glanced at her instructor, the one who had taught her and her class so much, and had to look away. but not before a few more tears silently rolled down her cheeks. She felt betrayed. She had trusted him.

She listened to the presentation, all of it feeling surreal and unnatural. Everything in her head was screaming that something was wrong. She sat frozen in her seat.

(Time to tempt fate by pissing off someone with a gun. Or being ignored, either or.)

Her attention shifted to Jordan.

Are you trying to die?
It's people like you that make them think that they have to teach us a lesson through manslaughter.
You are adding to the chaos, the need for order.
You are only making this worse.
But she remained silent. The lady didn't mention anything about killing, just winning. everyone knows what battle royale is, but perhaps they changed the rules. perhaps we only need to last a certain amount of days?

She felt a glimmer of hope. She listened to the questions of her other classmates and then asked weakly, shakily, almost inaudibly, "What do we have to do to win?" She hoped it wasn't the obvious answer. Her hands were shaking with fear.

She felt in her pocket for her small bible and phone, and glanced around for her backpack.
