Academy City.

A place where the impossible was possible, where the fantastic was mundane, and the extraordinary was... little more than ordinary, for the most part.

Needless to say, a kind of city like this where a number of students (students themselves taking up the majority of the population) have access to Esper powers ranging from teleportation to electrokinesis, manipulation of the human mind, and more, could be considered rather different from the ordinary city that you would find in the rest of the world.

However, with all the things that were different, there were some things in the world that would never change, no matter what, it seemed.

For example, akin to what you would see in other densely populated places like New York City, Tokyo, or Kowloon, Academy City was the kind of place where one could expect to be crowded during many times of the day, filled with students rushing to class on foot, cars making their way down the road to get to work, and the like, everything coming together as one would get a feeling of the bustling energy within the environment.

But more prominently, there was another thing.

A feeling of having something like a family.

Granted, as mentioned earlier, the majority of the city's population consisted of students, most of whom only made a temporary residence here, but if one looked close enough, namely in a certain apartment complex called Family Side, you could find it.

Contrary to what one might initially believe from the name and the description beforehand, Family Side has little to do with housing actual families, but rather, adults and other personnel, namely teachers, though this certain "family" was quite the special case. Not exactly as bizarre as one might think, but Accelerator, Last Order, Misaka Worst, Kikyou Yoshikawa, and Aiho Yomikawa all made quite an interesting family, if one could even call it that.

a437e21778804bbea27c9791075ebbdc.png

Dysfunctional as some may believe the family to be, the place was probably more homely than other actual homes in "normal" places. What they might have lacked in connection by blood, they made up for with... something. If asked, everyone would likely give a different answer, but perhaps the basic gist of it can be described as something "genuine," corny as it may sound.

Accelerator wasn't really a fan of sappy stuff like that either, personally, not that he'd ever admit he was secretly a sucker when it came to these things with these people.

But if there was one thing he couldn't deny...

"Oi oi, Accelerator-kuuun!" The voice of a certain high school's P.E. teacher named Aiho Yomikawa called out on a day like any other, with nothing out of the ordinary happening, even for the standards of this extraordinary city, "I need you to do something for me!"

"No," came the Strongest Esper's flat reply, without missing a beat.

For the city's strongest Esper (a title that some believed he didn't deserve on account of the losses he had suffered in the past), life could be quite boring for Accelerator. He didn't have any particular hobbies besides beating on cocky idiots who thought they were hot stuff, enough that they thought they could "dethrone" him, and there was nothing that particularly caught his interest on TV, so he just spent most of the day today laying on the couch, partially being grouchy about being bored (some would say it's a silly thing to be grouchy over, but he'd been grumpy over less than that in the past), and partially enjoying the freedom of not having anything to do, though it seemed that Yomikawa was intent on disturbing that peace.

"Eh? What was that?" Yomikawa asked, walking over to the younger man and looking down at him, arms crossed, "I wasn't asking, y'know. If you have time to laze around, then you've got time to fetch some groceries!" She exclaimed, producing a slip of paper, presumably the list of what they needed, from her pocket and holding it out to Accelerator.

th_toaru1.png

"And I didn't say maybe, I said no," he grunted curtly in response.

"Jeez... You're such a pain! You're lucky that I let a freeloader like you in out of the goodness of my heart! I mean, even Worst has done more for his household than you have! I bet she'd be perfectly willing to go out and be a dear! Isn't that right, Worst?!" Yomikawa would grunt, speaking in a higher volume as she'd call out for Misaka Worst, wherever she might be.

"This isn't gonna end well..."

Misaka Worst wasn't exactly a good girl. Anyone who knew her could attest to that. Just looking at her gave one that idea, the look in her eyes giving it away. Anyone familiar with the dark side of the city they currently resided would recognize it instantly too. One could say appearances could be deceiving, but for Misaka Worst she was pretty much exactly what she looked like. Though perhaps this was only the natural result of being the collective negative emotions of nearly 10,000 clones.

Despite that, the third season clone rose from her position on the floor, ignoring the frustrated child who looked like a 10 year old with an uncanny resemblance to her who'd apparently just lost in a video game.

"Tsk tsk, even Misaka is more helpful than you, #1. What does that say about you when even this Misaka is more dependable?"

Misaka Worst gave him a sneer and waggled her finger at him as she teased him.

The clone wasn't particularly interested in going shopping. In fact, the boring peace of it almost made her sick. The main reason she'd actually piped up was, more or less, simply to put Academy City's strongest esper on the spot.

"C'mon, #1, why don't you be a dear and get Misaka some ice cream? Kuku."

She could blame the desire for ice cream of all things on the 10 year old looking command tower.

Accelerator, trying to avoid conversation by pulling a book, presumably some sort of light novel specifically, closer to his face, but his pride, whatever was left of it, (after it seemed to spiral down and down into oblivion ever since that fateful fight against that damned Level 0 just a few months ago), wouldn't let Worst have the last word.

Still... Damn, it felt like much longer than that. That night where the Level 0 beat him in a fight somehow but... Bah. He was already in a bad mood as it was, so recalling that kind of event was only gonna put him in a shittier mood.

"I shoulda left you back in Russia when I had the chance," the Number One grumbled grouchily, being toyed with by these women exponentially weaker than he was, much to his dismay, "And go get it yourself. And don't even think of trying to use the guilt card on me because it won't work this time!"

... The sad part was that if Worst bawled her eyes out, which Accelerator could imagine that she could force herself to, he would probably cave in quicker than he'd like to admit.

"Actually, ice cream does sound nice. Surprisingly hot today even though we're in the later part of Autumn," Yomikawa would pipe out, briefly fanning herself with one hand while the other rested on her own hip, before a small, almost wry smirk would begin tugging at her lips, "Maybe you two should go out and get some together. You're always so naturally heated up, you could use something to cool you off, Accel-kun. And you shouldn't deny a lady her wishes after all."

tumblr_inline_nbuvkyvtSS1rg5xo1.png

"That witch is no lady, let me be clear about that," he grunted.

Normally, he was more... open about his cursing, but he knew that if he used such dastardly language in Yomikawa's presence, he'd instantly get kicked out of the building. Otherwise, he'd be much more openly mean-spirited towards the girl who seemed to enjoy being on the higher side of the scales than him.

Then again, it looked like either way, he was about to leave against his own will anyway if things kept up like this.

"Ahh, but this Misaka's arm still hurts a little," she lied with a faux pained expression, which wouldn't sell anyone on it thanks to the smirk on her face, "Misaka thinks she can't push the cart very well with just the other arm. Shouldn't you take responsibility for this Misaka?"

Completely ignoring his assertion, Misaka Worst poked at his conscience anyway. She knew that the strongest esper wasn't particularly good at handling his guilt, particularly when it came to anyone with her face. After all, she was basically designed entirely to take advantage of that, like she had back in Russia. From the implants she had to prevent orders from the command tower to the fact she was a clone of the #3 in Academy City in the first place, her existence was only here for that one reason.

But that was then. Now, rather than trying to break Accelerator, she just used that fact to get trivial favors and reactions out of him.

6zWHwqg.png

Worst's not so pleasant smirk wavered as the PE teacher suggested that she had to go along too. She had no particular desire of her own to go shopping. Yet somehow, the idea of going out shopping made her feel...jealous? Of what? Tch, not again. It seemed she had plenty to blame the Misaka Network for, as always.

Aaaahhh!! Why do I want go shopping?! It's not any of my business if he has to go read a list and grab food. But, but, this stupid network...!

Last Order's jealousy of Accelerator's ability to move about freely got the better of her, despite the fact Worst was not really being constrained to the room herself. It was ridiculous, like an older sister doing something simply because the younger sister couldn't, and she was astutely aware of this fact.

Then again, she was technically the younger sister here.

Powerless against the surges of emotion from the network, the woman in the ao dai abruptly walked over to Accelerator and began prodding him, purposely pushing at his cheek with just enough force to make his head turn and make the reading experience thoroughly uncomfortable.

"Misaka wants to go shopping too! C'mon, shopping!"

Even Worst herself couldn't fully comprehend her outburst.

At least Accelerator wasn't going to be much happier about it, she felt.

th_toaru1.png

Accelerator tried his hardest to ignore the first few quips that Worst would throw concerning her condition, and though his hardest wasn't quite good enough if Worst really wanted to get under his skin, he was almost slightly relieved when she would seem to almost abruptly stop trying to egg him on, only for his relief to once again turn into irritation when she would continue on with her shenanigans, this time through a slightly different method. Poking. Wonderful.

He furrowed his eyebrows as Worst would continue to pester him, trying to no avail to ignore her as he could feel her soft finger poke and poke and poke his cheek without any stop. But he wasn't gonna let her have his way because... because...!

...

Ghhgh... She smells nice.

An uncharacteristic thought assaulted the genius Esper's mind with Misaka Worst being so close to him. As it was, Accelerator was not used to really being touched, since his Redirection used to be automatic and active at all times before the incident that led him to where he was now. However, this was a little different from when Last Order would hug his leg like an excited child, or when Yomikawa would give him a not so playful noogie for... being himself. There was also the factor that Misaka Worst was different in one other regard from the other. The Number One had no interest in little girls, nor did he chase after "Christmas cakes," or to put it simply, older women. The young man never really put much thought into what kind of woman was his type, but even if his mind never gave it any thought, that wasn't gonna stop anything. After all, he was at that kind of age where he began to take an interest in these kinds of things, whether he'd ever admit it or not.

And by "things," he meant... not Worst.

Right?

Geh. In any case.

th_toaru10.png

"Fine, fine, if it'll fucking get you both off my back, then alright already!" Accelerator snapped. With that, he let out an annoyed sigh, closing his novel and tossing it onto the nearby table, before reaching over and grabbing his crutch, along with the list that Yomikawa had been clutching in her hand.

"Ice cream, and then whatever is on the list. Shouldn't take too long... hopefully. Are you two happy now?"

"As can be when dealing with you," Yomikawa said with a laid-back smile, giving a brief thumbs up, as well as a wink.

... The hell was that wink for?

Her ploy a success, Misaka Worst stepped away from Accelerator only long enough for him to get up, put away the book, and grab the cane and paper before draping herself into the rail-thin esper's back. She placed her head on his shoulder, resting most of her weight on him while barely standing up using her own two feet. While not in esper mode he had to rely on a crutch, but she didn't seem to pay that any mind as she sneered. Besides, if he complained about her weight, a house full of women wouldn't let him off that easily, strongest in Academy City or not.

X0WiOMP5SyCiz5-pZG1mcg.png

"Heh heh. You can't get Misaka off your back that easily~. But Misaka is the collection of the Sisters' negative emotions. Misaka is never happy."

Quietly chuckling to herself, she didn't relent from his back as they walked out of the apartment, giving Yomikawa a wink of her own. She didn't need the Misaka Network to see the steam rise from Last Order's head if this were an anime or something. That thought brought an almost happy looking smile to her face. For some reason.

? I can't receive positive emotions from the network, right?

Well, no need to dwell on those thoughts.

Worst had decided to plant herself on Accelerator on a whim, more or less doing it in equal parts to annoy Accelerator and the little girl that was Last Order. As soon as they were out of the room, she hadn't really planned to keep clinging on like a child. It was less convenient for both of them, making it harder to walk as she relied on a boy with a crutch to carry her forward. But when they walked out to begin the grocery shopping, she didn't really feel like getting off. It felt nice in that disgusting way that everything on the light side did. Like peacefully walking through a store, or just casually eating ice cream without anything to worry about, or the handshake she'd exchanged with Accelerator when she decided it'd be more fun to be on his side than Academy City's.

"Hm, this is the first time Misaka has clung to someone like this. Do you want Misaka to whisper sweet nothings into your ear until we get to the shop? Or do you even want me to continue when we're inside?" She teased him in a voice somewhere between talking normally and a whisper, purposely exhaling a bit of warm air onto his skin that currently didn't use Reflection.

It'd be a long walk to the store.

"I now remember why I prefer it when nothing touches me," Accelerator only grunted somewhat sardonically in response to Worst's continued teasing. True enough, along with the unwanted(?) invasion of personal space on Worst's part, the feeling of the sun's rays that he wasn't used to like other people were only added a little to his irritation as the two of them walked from the building onto the streets.

Still, despite his words, he didn't shake her off.

Accelerator remembered why neither of them often went out. Even though Worst looked quite a bit different from the real Misaka and the clones on account of her being biologically older and the fact that... For better or for worse, she actually emoted, unlike the Sisters, and emoted in a manner that the original never would.

If worst came to worst, no pun intended, he could probably just say that she was the real Electromaster's older sister, though then again, according to rumors, she had enough trouble with that as it was, as her mother supposedly already looked young enough to be a sister anyway.

But that wasn't his business.

th_toaru21.png

As they continued to walk along the streets of Academy City, the pair no doubt getting strange looks from onlookers, Accelerator let out a small sigh, recalling something Worst had said earlier, and decided to make small conversation with her, greatly against his better judgment.

"Y'know, for someone who claims to never be happy, you're awful cheery most of the damned time."

"...What if you touch Misaka?"

Surprisingly, she wasn't shaken off, nor even threatened. Aside from a quick remark, he was quick to accept the situation. Perhaps she'd lost her touch at annoying him, or he was learning to not respond the way she prodded him. Whatever the reason, she wouldn't complain if she got to keep clinging onto him. Maybe cause a misunderstanding or two, and all that fun stuff. Surely that'd be inconvenient for him.

Also, for a bring on a crutch, he felt surprisingly strong, considering his steps didn't particularly waver.

Misaka Worst wasn't the type to really care about what others were thinking about her. Which meant how strange the pair may have looked only served to amuse her as she noticed the various looks they garnered from others. In other words, she had no reason to get off Accelerator, and he wasn't forcing her off. In a way, it was like a battle of wills to see who'd give up and try to break themselves apart first.

Though, perhaps it was a bit lame for a "battle."

"This Misaka's existence is to channel the rest of the network's negative emotions, so being unhappy is like validating Misaka's existence. Besides, Misaka thinks you like it better when Misaka can't be satisfied."

A sneer came to her face as her frivolous speech continued, her supposed unhappiness only truly showing through in her poor taste in jokes.

"You prefer a selfish Misaka, right, #1? Like if Misaka cried and shouted for ice cream, you'd have to buy it for Misaka, kuku," Worst cackled quietly between the two of them.

th_toaru18.png

"I'm not holding your hand through the city if that's what you're asking. Not even if you beg."

She was probably gonna try to beg, just because they were out in public. At least, that's what Accelerator believed anyway.

Still, continuing to reluctantly just let her continue to cling on him, a part of him also thinking of this as a sort of dumb "battle of wills," Accelerator was loath to admit that perhaps there was some other reason he was just letting her, a person that he was supposed to dislike who was supposed to dislike him back, be so close to him, but... Tch. He really has gone soft.

Though whether that was a bad thing remained to be seen.

"I'm just gonna ignore those baseless suggestions. Making conversation was a mistake..." He grumbled, before continuing to act against his better judgment and talk again, "Still... Is it possible to see you actually happy for once, or is happiness something that doesn't compute for you?"

The Number One felt compelled to ask this after remembering the Level 6 Shift Project that he was once a part of, and the many Sisters that he had been instructed to kill. Most of them were somewhat mindless. Mentally primitive, despite their super intelligence. They were almost like robots, and yet... The more of them he killed, the more advanced they got. To the point where most of the later ones seemed to display genuine fear like a human would. On top of that was that damned Level 0 who beat him yelling on and on about how "they were people too" or something, and just... because he remembered Last Order, and wondered to himself if those expressions the little girl emoted could have possibly been fake.

Still, upon hearing the crack about a "selfish Misaka," to be perfectly honest... It wasn't like Worst, as almost like a will of the network in one light, didn't have a right to be selfish. He felt foolish for getting somewhat sentimental over a... network outlet or whatever, but after everything that had happened, maybe he did owe her that much.

Of course, he would never admit that to her or she'd never stop bothering him about it. Or even the other girls for that matter.

"Oya? Academy City's strongest esper is going to make Misaka, who isn't even a year old, cry? Scary, so scary~"

Like an endless pool of vitriol, there seemed to be no end in sight to Misaka Worst's teasing. Annoying him at every turn registered as fun in her books, the clone relishing in whatever reaction she managed to get from him. Yet at the same time, it felt kind of strange that she was always itching for attention from him. She could go so far as to say annoying him in particular brought a peculiar joy. Even if it was always searching for a negative reaction, attention was attention. Why did she need the attention of the one she was meant to destroy?

Sure, she got her kicks from manipulating a certain level 4 cyborg, but it was only around Accelerator that she could still really feel like fighting. And, perhaps, that difference in treatment extended to her other habits.

...

Hopefully not. Such matters weren't for a dark clone like herself.

"Ah, Misaka's being ignored," she complained before thinking about his question. She actually wasn't quite sure herself. Only negative emotions were received from the Network. That much she knew. But could she, Misaka Worst, feel happy? Did taking pleasure in teasing others count as happiness? Or was that just a twisted form of anger, the misery of others coming out as happiness from one who only knew the negative spectrum of...most things, actually.

"Happiness is just feeling better than others, right? Then Misaka feels very happy when everyone else isn't."

In the end, she actually wasn't sure herself. Happiness wasn't exactly something she could calculate about herself and then compare to everybody else. But, to make it simple, if she felt good, she was happy. So, was clinging to Accelerator's back being happy?

While she pondered that, she overheard a certain level 4, the opposite of the aforementioned cyborg.

As they continued walk together, passing by a video store that was miraculously not out of business, the voice of another certain Level 0 could faintly be heard inside.

"I dunno... Are you sure this "Sharknado" movie actually exists, Kinuhata? I can't find it anywhere... Where the heck did you even hear about it?"

"Hamazuraaa, are you super trying to say I'm delusional? I told you, I super found it on the computer!"

She could just barely hear something that sounded like an impact. By the speech pattern, it seemed to be that girl who showed up last to the "villain girl meet up."

Small world. Or city.

"... Well. I guess it's something at least," Accelerator grunted in response to Worst's personal definition on what happiness might be, "And what about when your so-called urges that you get from the Network are fulfilled, like having some ice cream? Is the effect the same as when you piss me off?"

Speaking of which, as they would walk, the two of them conveniently happened upon an ice cream stand, headed by what looked like a student, probably managing the place as some sort of part-time job. Upon approaching the place, the young clerk's complexion became quite pale, though perhaps this was to be expected. After all, when one holds the title of the strongest around, Accelerator was used to most people either being scornfully skeptical of him, or rather fearful.

"A-Ah... H-How can I help you two?" He stammered nervously.

And then there was... Worst.

That is, there was how Worst looked. To the eyes of others, if she didn't look like an older sister of the Railgun, then maybe with how she was hanging around Accelerator, one could perceive her as the real Railgun if she had become a delinquent due to Accelerator's... influence. Now, wouldn't that be a thought.

th_toaru25.png

Glancing at the scared boy, and then at Worst, and then back at the boy, he sighed.

"... Fuckin'... Uh, two chocolates will be fine."

...

"... Chocolate's fine, right?"

Accelerator wasn't normally one for appeasing someone, especially not Worst, but she technically had the advantage here, as if he didn't, there was nothing stopping her from telling on him to Yomikawa, where the young man would face the wrath of the one thing scarier than an Esper capable of modifying vectors as he saw fit.

Unmarried women older than 25.

Worst sneered as she realized the boy they were trying to buy ice cream from clearly wasn't used to people like the two of them. Based on his pale expression, he seemed to have recognized the strongest esper, her resemblance to #3, or simply that they were dangerous people. Not that it mattered which it was. The important thing was that he was scared. Scared of their appearance or reputation, didn't matter which.

That or he was an exceptionally nervous kid. But she was willing to bet against that.

Cupping her hand and putting her mouth by Accelerator's ear, she spoke in a low voice, "Between you and Misaka? Pissing you off is the ultimate happiness~" Pulling back, the clone stared the clerk down with an impish look on her features as Accelerator clumsily placed their order.

"Tch. I bet it is..." He simply grumbled.

"Misaka prefers vanilla, actually."

Whether she just wanted to be contrarian or actually preferred that flavor was hard to tell.

vJkptLWkRpiwmoCJqAILKw.png

Leaning in closer to whisper to Accelerator again, she added, "Hey, let's walk off without paying and see if he calls us back. Misaka thinks he'll chicken out if you don't offer to pay him, kukuku."

Ice cream wasn't particularly expensive. She also didn't have anything in particular against the poor clerk. But as far as she was concerned, there was no reason to really actually buy anything other than that was how it was supposed to be. So long as they didn't get caught in the process or whatever, it was fine, right? With this kid's apparent state of anxiety, it didn't seem likely he'd take steps to stop them, even if he somehow could stop a Level 4 electromaster and the #1. More importantly, though, Accelerator wouldn't approve of it. She couldn't imagine him doing so, at least.

So she casually suggested a criminal act to him.

Without a word, as though too afraid to say anything, the so-called clerk got some cones and scoop up the requested flavors of ice cream, his hands visibly trembling as it seemed like his fear of Accelerator and Worst became more and more apparent. This was perhaps one of the bigger reasons why Accelerator didn't often go out. If people weren't out to kill him in order to prove themselves as the strongest in Academy City, then they feared him like some sort of bogeyman.

Granted, given his past and the blood on his hands, perhaps their fear was warranted, and maybe he deserved that kind of pseudo-ostracization that was imposed on him, as he believed he was fine as long as he had his pseudo-family with him, but even so, it could be pretty damned annoying during times like these.

When the clerk finished up and Accelerator would hear out Worst, he remained silent for a moment, before sighing, not giving any indication on if he was going to go with Worst's suggestion or not until he would take out his wallet and leave the money (most of his money was just an allowance provided by Yomikawa) on the counter. Evidently, even though it was unlikely that the nameless clerk had heard Worst's suggestion, it seemed that he was surprised when Accelerator would choose to pay, but regardless, the #1 took the ice cream, ignoring the look that he was getting.

... Or at least, he would, but he may as well say something instead of just letting it be.

th_toaru27.png

"... You do know that I don't have any reason to hurt you, right? Keep that in mind if I ever come back," he simply grunted, and with that, began to walk off, gesturing for Worst to follow.

Perhaps if it were a few months ago, Accelerator would have gone ahead and not paid, and would have probably even laughed about it in the process, but these past few months have caused quite a bit of change within him, as much as he didn't really wanna talk about it, between the confrontations with that Level 0 whom he couldn't defeat, Yomikawa and Yoshikawa's hospitality, and of course, Last Order's love that seemed to influence him.

"I don't know if you were trying to bait me into being a bad guy again, but while I've stopped caring about things like heroics and villainy ever since Russia, that doesn't mean you and the others are the only people I'll just choose to not be a bastard to."

And with that, he handed Worst the vanilla cone.

Worst seemed to not mind or care that he'd completely ignored her suggestion. Nothing new there. He was long past that stage, even by the time she'd first met him. Even if she cried and begged him to do it, for most things he'd probably fold, which they both knew, but on something like that he wouldn't give. Even if they always talked about the peace like it was royal pain in the ass, Worst felt she could confidently assert he'd fight to protect it, whether she wanted him to or not.

So as he handed her the ice cream, she wasn't quite sure how serious he was being. No, knowing him, he was being 100% serious in response to her, no matter whether she was joking around or not. The edges of her mouth began to curl upwards despite her best attempts to stop them, her body trembling as she did. But soon, she just couldn't contain it any longer.

"Ahahahaha! You, you should have seen your face! Misaka has no interest in you becoming a petty thief, Mr. Honor Student! ...No, actually, maybe that would be funny! Academy City's Strongest Esper is an ice cream burglar! Hahaha!!"

Wiping away the tears of laughter that had welled up with her free hand, Worst finally began to lick at her ice cream. But despite her laughter, she couldn't help but feel a little...what was she feeling? She wasn't sure herself, but that never bothered her, and still really didn't. Still, if she had to put a name to it, it'd be, perhaps, envious.

Even he, the one with the blood of over 10,000 clones on his hands, had adjusted to the peace convincingly well. Sure, she wasn't going around stealing and killing people, but she knew her own mindset was messed up from others' perspective. Not that she planned to change that anytime soon, but normally this kind of scene with two people going to get ice cream was reserved for people who didn't crawl in the dark. Not people like them.

Thus she felt a little out of place, peacefully licking an ice cream cone. It wasn't the first time she'd gotten ice cream, but she still couldn't shake that feeling off.

Accelerator, though, despite complaining all the time, almost looked like he could fit in, not that she'd ever tell him that. She could hardly believe it herself. When she went out with Umidori, it was easy to tell that neither of them really fit in with the rest. From Umidori's sense of fashion to the look in both of their eyes, it was simple for just about anyone to figure out. The same was true for Accelerator here, but somehow it felt like if his reputation didn't precede him, this would have been an ordinary scene that one might have seen anywhere else in the world.

It was almost unfair how he'd adapted already, though then again he had quite the head start.

"...Misaka still can't get used to this." Worst suddenly said with a smile as she continued licking at her ice cream. "Misaka still feels like this is just some calm before the storm, before Academy City suddenly releases something outrageous once it passes. How long do you think Misaka can stay inside their boundaries? Or do you think something's going to happen before Misaka takes a step outside them?"

A slightly discouraged tone escaped her. Ah, this kind of peace really just wasn't for her at all. Even if it was fun in its own way, this life she was building up here.

Accelerator's eye could visibly be seen twitching a little when Worst would have quite the laugh.

The Number One helped himself to his chocolate ice cream, later attempting to ignore her not so good-natured teasing and her laughing. Right. Fair enough. It was a stupid thing to even consider. He just hoped that the Sisters didn't all share one big memory, or else Last Order would probably lecture him about this stuff as well, and he certainly didn't need that from a child. Well, then again, they sorta did have that kind of thing if he remembered correctly; that was the whole point of being a collective, but...

Yeah, he's just gonna try to ignore this.

Continuing to walk alongside her, crutch in one hand and ice cream cone in the other, he listened quietly to her next few words. He wondered what suddenly caused her to think about all that, but it wasn't like he couldn't see where she was sorta coming from. Perhaps it was natural for people like them to worry about this. Perhaps less so for Accelerator nowadays, but despite that, he dared think about the possibility that the two of them had more in common with each other than he had initially thought. Tch, he could already hear all the jokes now, that is, if people even dared to joke about Accelerator to his face. The one the Accelerator found the most in common with was a person who was supposed to be the embodiment of a collective's negative emotions.

th_toaru42.png

"Yeah... There's always something going on in Academy City. So much so that it becomes boring after a while," Accelerator began to respond, raising an eyebrow at the sudden uneasiness in her voice. Hmph. So that's what she sounded like when she wasn't perpetually smug or otherwise mischievous to him. He could certainly get used to that, but he wasn't gonna hold his breath.

"Oya, so you actually do care about living here with the others," he said. Perhaps if the phrase was said by someone else, it could be taken as mean spirited teasing, but in this case, it could also be taken as just being plain mean-spirited, or actual surprise, "So I'll say it once, and only once; how long do you want to stay? If you want to remain here as we are, then... Just leave everything to me. I'll protect you, and everyone else that I have to."

... Shit. He was actually being nice to her. Maybe there really was a storm brewing soon.

With that, he decided to do something totally outrageous.

He softly flicked his finger on Worst's nose in an attempt to snap her back to attention.

It felt good to be on the other side of the scales at least.

th_toaru49.png

"A-Anyway... C'mon. If you have time to worry about how much longer you might have here, you have time to think about what we're going to make for dinner. Alright?"

Staring down at her finished ice cream, Worst began biting at the cone.

"Hm...so Misaka doesn't have to lift a finger, huh? Heh, the #1 sure can be nice."

Catching on to how she'd sounded before, she quickly fixed her tone back to the usual, cackling just loudly enough to let Accelerator hear as she finished. Well, whatever happened in the future would be taken care of then. Why was she worrying about that anyway? She could probably blame the combination of the Network and the ice cream. Stupid, sweet ice cream.

*flick*

"Whu-?!"

A few harmless stray sparks flew from her head. That was different. She was used to his cold indifference or awkward sincerity, the latter of which he'd just displayed, but that was usually constrained to words. Though he broke her from her train of thought, so it had the desired effect, pretty much.

"Looks like even you can be pretty funny sometimes," she rubbed at her nose, her expression settling back to her usual one. Or, actually, a little more mischievous than normal. "Even the Accelerator stutters. Misaka can't wait to share this new knowledge~"

Dinner wasn't too high on her list of priorities. Still, though, they had to eat something. Besides the ice cream, anyway.

"What does the list say? Misaka doesn't think either of us are doing the cooking anyway, so might as well go with whatever she wanted us to nab."

"Tch... Why do I even bother, I find myself wondering..." He grumbled at her initial response.

"Anyway... Let's see..." Accelerator would continue when Worst would inquire about what exactly was on the list, before proceeding to take a look at the list that Yomikawa had given him and beginning to read, "Uh... it's split into two sections for some reason. The top part just says stuff like eggs, bread, etc., that sorta normal stuff, and then there's a line that separates it from the other half that lists chicken, mushrooms, spinach, and some other stuff, and at the bottom, a note that says she'll be whipping up Chicken Marsala tonight."

"... What the hell is Chicken Marsala?"

As much of a genius Accelerator was, it seemed that there were also a number of basic things he didn't know about.

"A pretty delicious dish! Mmm, if it's cooking somewhere, count me in-nya!"

Behind the two of them stood a certain sunglasses-wearing blonde teenager with a green Hawaii shirt. Accelerator's brow visibly twitched when he would hear the unfamiliar (to Worst, that is) voice, though then again, what didn't cause him to twitch these days? Turning around to face the young man, Accelerator narrowed his eyes warily.

Whenever the guy who called himself Motoharu Tsuchimikado was involved, it was never something good. Ever. What the hell was he still around for anyway? Did ITEM even still exist after the fiasco with Fiamma of the Right?

th_toaru30.png

Swear to God, if he picks now of all times for me to do some dumb mission...

If he was, Tsuchimikado seemed to be taking his sweet time, going for a wave when the Number One would turn around with a cheery "Yo! Been a while, right? And it's nice to meet you, Misaka Worst! Gotta say, I guess I do dig the... modifications they made, comparing your body to that of the other Sisters and the original!" as though he had already heard about her, even though they had never met before.

"What the hell are you doing here, Tsuchimikado? I'm busy right now," Accelerator grunted, ignoring the oddly possibly innuendo-imbued comment from him.

"In a moment! I always wanted to meet someone from what was supposed to be the next line of the Sisters! How are you today, my fair lady? You can call me Tsuchimikado. You see, Accelerator and I are... you might say, working associates! That is, if "partners in crime" is something inadvisable to say, heh!"

I don't know who I'm going to kill first, him or myself...

Worst scratched at her head upon hearing Chicken Marsala. She wasn't exactly sure what that was either, or why all these ingredients were needed for it. Besides the chicken, obviously. At least that one spoke for itself. But before she could try to think on it more, or perhaps use the Network to get information on it, they were told what it was.

If one considered "It's a dish" as informative, anyway.

Turning to meet the unfamiliar voice, Worst couldn't stop herself from giving him an odd look. Blonde hair, hawaiian shirt, whoever this was seemed completely out of place. Yet somehow, he knew who she was. Her suspicions about him would've been much more direct if Accelerator didn't seem to know him. But as things stood, she relaxed and placed a hand on her hip, maintaining her "pleasant" demeanor. She couldn't see his eyes through his shades, but it didn't exactly take a genius to realize he wasn't some oblivious person from what he said.

jp599z2.png

"It's such a shame Accelerator doesn't appreciate Misaka's modifications as much as you, isn't it? Such a shame, such a shame. Well, it seems Misaka doesn't need to introduce herself to you, but Misaka feels just fine," Worst ruffled Accelerator's hair with her other hand. "Though, Misaka is actually more interested in how you're doing. If you want some food, Misaka doesn't share cheap."

Unable to discern his intentions, she simply continued to make small talk, waiting to see if something would slip. Or if he'd ever get around to saying what he came here for. Whichever it was.

Accelerator let out a soft sound, almost like that of a growl, when Worst would ruffle his hair. Though then again, who knew? Maybe it was in actuality a small purr. Maybe doing it some more would yield an answer.

Except for when he'd pull away in a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, the young man who introduced himself as Tsuchimikado let out a small laugh, scratching the back of his head briefly, before responding, clasping his hands together and letting out a small clap sound. "Sounds like a blast! Three's better than two, and between you and me, Accel-kun isn't the greatest conversation partner by himself. Besides, Chicken Marsala is an absolute must in--"

"I said, the fuck do you want, Tsuchimikado?"

"Ah, right, right! That, I'm afraid, I'll have to pull you away for to discuss. I'm sure you'd understand, right, Misaka Worst?" Tsuchimikado said, as though he had genuinely forgotten about why he was here for a moment, hitting his palm with his other hand that had been balled into his fist, "It's important and complicated stuff, y'know!"

th_toaru12.png

"When you say it like that, it leads me to believe it's actually nothing at all, but fine. If it's so goddamn important that you had to pick now of all fuckin' times to bother me, then I'll go," Accelerator grumbled, pushing the grocery list in his hand into Worst's chest for her to take, "Here, start shopping by yourself. Once I'm done, I'll call you and head towards wherever you are. Don't disappear on me, alright?"

If it weren't for the fact he'd met and already knew her and Accelerator, Worst would've been inclined to imagine he was just a strange, talkative guy. But, of course, taking that into account he had to be up to something as it was. Accelerator's partner? What exactly did they do? Worst tried to think of a way to pry more information out of him without being cut off completely for inquiring too far, or any other potential conversational trip wire. But she had a feeling a direct "What are you guys doing?" wouldn't get any answers, and she didn't have enough information for a stab in the dark.

In the end, she couldn't think of anything before she was more or less handed the grocery list.

"Oya? Maybe he is interested." Worst sneered as he pushed the list into her chest. "Well, have fun with your 'important and complicated' stuff, Misaka will just slave away then. Perhaps Misaka will buy something extra on your tab if you're too slow, kukuku."

With that, she gave them a wave as Accelerator would presumably be pulled away. Bringing the list up to eye level, Worst scanned through the list. ...This was a long list. All sorts of normal necessities, and then the stuff for whatever "Chicken Marsala" was. Good thing her arm wasn't actually hurt anymore or there might have been a legitimate problem here. Clicking her tongue in annoyance, she rubbed her head as she walked towards the store.

"...Misaka didn't expect to have to do the grunt work alone."

And like that, she made to collect the items on the list.

Accelerator and Tsuchimikado would walk quite a ways from the market that was already near Misaka's position before Accelerator had even left. The two young men walked in silence for the most part, Accelerator's hand tucked into his pocket while the other used his crutch to help him walk, seeming to only want to get whatever Tsuchimikado wanted over with, while the other was far more nonchalant, holding his head up high and his arms folded behind his head, before the sunglasses-wearing teen would glance towards Accelerator.

"So... You're not, like, shacking up with her, are you?~ Because I mean, she--"

th_toaru12.png

"With a flick of the wrist, I can break every single bone in your body."

"--Never mind."

This was going to be a long walk.

With that, Tsuchimikado continued to lead on Accelerator in silence, the two apparently not having much to say, or at least, it would seem that way as Tsuchimikado was somewhat wary of what he would even say to the Number One. Hmm... There wasn't really much to comment on when it came to ITEM. Etzali and Musujime were all mostly doing their own things again so maybe they were... unofficially disbanded? Or on hiatus? Tch, what a bother.

Eventually, Accelerator was led to a strange place. He wasn't sure if he could call it subtle or say that it stuck out like a sore thumb; the place in question being an empty construction site, or at least, a place that was once a construction site. At first glance, there wasn't anything that stuck out about the place, except... the dead body obscured by a white cloth. Huh. Well, that was something.

Upon reaching the corpse, as though it were something Tsuchimikado had intended to show Accelerator from the very beginning, he would uncover the cloth, revealing the deceased to be a woman, likely somewhere in her twenties to thirties, implying that she was one of the few adults that resided in Academy City.

th_toaru8.png

"... Hmph."

Accelerator hardly reacted to the sight of the corpse alone, besides an ambiguous grunt, but something was definitely wrong. Perhaps it was just him, but it didn't take a genius to take note of certain things about the scene. Most notably, the lack of any force, like Judgment or even Anti-Skill, in the area would imply that someone else had discovered the body. Like Tsuchimikado's boss-man, whoever the hell it even was anyway, wanting to cover it up, but the million-dollar question would be "Why?"

Perhaps that in itself was enough to make Accelerator just a tad interested.

"A dead body, huh? So what's so special about it? If it's not the person who died that's important, then... I assume we have some crazy worm on the loose?"

"Well, before I get into the nitty gritty... Tell me, Number One, do you notice anything strange about the state of the body?"

"You mean besides the fact that the body is in a place like this where it's gonna inevitably found?"

"I have reason to believe that she... fell. Likely from the building next to us, though..." Tsuchimikado let out a sharp whistle, "She dropped a long way. And at such an angle too. Anyway, go on."

Narrowing his eyes, Accelerator leaned forward a bit to examine it, before he saw it.

"It looks like she got blown to hell like some mad bomber got to her, a struggle is apparent given the bruise on her neck, yet the thing that sticks out the most is..."

"... It looks like her hands were cleanly sliced off. They're nowhere to be found."

"From what we can assume by examining the crime scene and the area around it, I think the woman down here was chased up a stairwell in one of those unfinished buildings nearby by the culprit, and there's a blood trail that indicates that that her--"

th_toaru23.png

"Blah blah blah," Accelerator interrupted. Math and physics may technically be his specialty, but he wasn't dumb when it came to other stuff. Except for the part where he didn't know what Chicken Marsala was.

"Yeah, I can piece it all by myself. She was chased to the roof where she fell down here, and either died on impact, or died because she was blown right off the roof. Either way, the state of the body suggests that her hands were removed by him after she died, meaning that he went through all the trouble to walk back down to the ground level to take it off, but... Why leave the evidence right here? Unless..."

"Musujime stumbled upon the scene before he could do much more than take off her hands," Tsuchimikado answered, crossing his arms, "Shined her flashlight right at him and it scared him off. He blew up the air around him with invisible bombs, rendering her unable to get to him before he got away. Still at large. This was all just today, I should mention."

"I see... So a crazed Esper with a need to harvest hands, huh? Haven't--"

"Actually, that's the thing... I don't think he's... from around here."

...

th_toaru33.png

"Wait... you don't mean...?"

"Not from this world, yes," Tsuchimikado nodded, a grave expression on his face for once replacing his signature cat-like smile, crossing his arms, "We think his sudden appearance in here as something to do with the residual power of the Right Hand of the Crimson Moon, meaning that Fiamma of the Right has become active somewhere again, or..." He began to trail off.

"Or what?"

"... Nothing. It's nothing," he shook his head.

The thought that perhaps the Kihara family had gotten their hands on such means was distressing, even to someone like Tsuchimikado who worked directly under the General Superintendent himself, to say nothing of the rumor that there was something on the Magic Side even more terrifying than Fiamma of the Right...

th_toaru9.png

"Whatever, I don't give a shit where he came from! If he's just some mad bomber then, why the hell do you need me to clean up the mess? Can't someone else like Etzali or even Musujime by herself handle this guy?"

"The thing is... From what Musujime told me, not only is he more than just a mad bomber, his power is generally invisible to everyone except himself, and if he can see it, maybe those who read his brain signals can see it, like Shokuhou, or..."

"... People like the Railgun, who can read those electric brain signals."

"People like Worst..."

...

"Well, I wouldn't worry about her if you think she's in great danger. Getting Musujime to pick her up right now. She'll be in good hands."

b0f6609ad37da0af7f37dc13716f4847.png

"Yes, I trust her in hands that have probably groped many little boys," he said sardonically, before following up, "Though... I'm assuming that if you're sending her after her, then you still need something from me?"

"It'd be problematic if a guy not from this world, meaning no one around can identify him, would just die, or so says the boss man. Apparently a theory that he hopes he's wrong about, but doesn't want to take any risks, y'know?"

"... Uh-huh? So what do you want me to do about it?"

"Well... The Right Hand of the Crimson Moon. You remember the little ordeal with that, right?"

"Tch. Who could forget World War III?"

"Weeellll, you see..."

This was going to be a long-winded explanation, Accelerator could already tell.

While Worst would collect the needed items at the market by herself, the process itself seeming uneventful at first, a man would come out of the blue and accidentally bump into her, making a small, surprised grunt as he would do so. Staggering back a bit, as he didn't seem to notice her, the man would quickly gather his bearings and clear his throat.

Upon inspection, the man almost looked Caucasian, judging by his pale skin and blonde hair, but his face had something Japanese about it. He stood nine centimeters taller than Worst, and sported a suit that was, of all colors, lavender, rather than a standard white, black, dark blue, or something like that. He certainly didn't look like he was from around here.

"Ah... I'm very sorry, young miss. Are you alright?" He asked, seemingly concerned, though it was a little hard to tell at first because of how strangely calm his voice was.

"Ahh, Misaka's bored."

Without Accelerator around, the mundaneness of the task really hit her. She'd gone out on the trip in the first place pretty much solely to bother him, after all. Without him around, her motivation was shot. Still, she preferred eating to not eating so she reluctantly continued the process of shopping.

bump

Having to take a step or two back from the impact, Worst quickly scanned him. It wasn't impossible for her to bump into someone, but she liked to imagine that she was more aware than that. Even if someone wasn't paying attention, she was, and would thus avoid them. Unless she wanted to bump into them, or something strange like that. In that way, simply bumping into her was suspicious in its own right. Though that ended up being nothing compared to his appearance. It wasn't unheard of for non-Japanese to be in Academy City exactly, but the pale skin and blonde hair made him stand out quite a bit. The Hawaiian shirt guy's name was Japanese, so she'd automatically figured he'd simply dyed his hair to go with that ridiculous look of his. This guy's seemed more natural.

Were he not pale, his height might have made her think he was a bodyguard type of some sort thanks to his height. Thanks to her own fairly strange manner of dress, wearing an ao dai in Academy City, the suit's strangeness escaped her, but the hints of Japanese descent on his face did not. Visiting family, or something more devious? She liked to imagine the latter.

"Sure," Worst gave him a curt wave and response of affirmation.

Well, even if he was suspicious looking and sounding, she wasn't really in the mood to pick a fight or anything.

...

But somehow she didn't feel like she should totally ignore him. Maybe a quick question before going on her way. Besides, if she took longer here, maybe Accelerator would come back before she finished, and she could pester him some more about whatever business the strange Hawaiian shirt guy wanted with him.

"Though, Misaka is curious. Did you dye your hair? Or are you from out of town?"

The man raised an eyebrow when he would hear Worst speak in the third person, but despite a somewhat uncomfortable look that would be driven away somewhat quickly, he wouldn't comment on that, at least not immediately. Glancing up, he'd run his fingers through his blonde hair, before diverting his attention back to Worst.

"My hair... Ah, no, I was born with it. Though... Yes, I suppose I would be considered... from out of town," he said, looking around the place with a somewhat troubled expression for whatever reason, pocketing his hands, likely a result of the man seemingly being nervous, as can be supported by light sweating on his part, though one could argue that it was a result of the heat. Eventually, taking one hand out of his pocket, he would hold his chin in thought, one finger in his own mouth, as though he was... biting his own nail.

"This place is... interesting, but not exactly like beautiful Morioh that I'm used to."

After a while, he cleared his throat, focusing his attention back on Worst.

ntWTYmu.jpg

"... Ah, where are my manners? Your name is... Misaka, I presume? My name is... Kira. Yoshikage Kira."

His reaction to her speech pattern wasn't unexpected. Talking in third person was usually considered fairly childish, and as far as appearances went, she seemed to be a high school student. It seemed he had the tact to not bring it up, though, so Worst decided not to either. That wasn't a big deal.

What she did find strange were his body language and the name of the town he'd mentioned.

"Misaka has never heard of 'Morioh.' Is it some small town, or something?"

She scratched the back of her neck as she tried to recall a town by that name. Nothing, even with the Network. Her own knowledge being lacking was annoying, but understandable. None of the nearly 10,000 clones having even heard of it, though, was unlikely enough to raise suspicion. And with the way the grown man seemed to be fidgeting almost like a child who'd done something wrong, she could say with practical certainty that something was up with this strange, foreign blonde.

There was no solid evidence, but this was the kind of man who dealt with shady things. The dark side, perhaps not of Academy City, but of this "Morioh" he came from. Though, then again, it wasn't impossible for Morioh itself to be a lie. Her two options were to exchange the small talk and leave, or confront him and find out what exactly he was up to. If Accelerator were around they'd almost certainly end up doing the latter, but alone she didn't feel as motivated to do anything about it.

Decisions decisions.

Her arm fell to her side, resting at her hip as she answered his introduction.

"Call me Worst, it gets confusing if you call Misaka Misaka." There were far too many "Misakas" for that to pan out. "Yoshikage Kira, huh? Well, what'd you come to Academy City for anyway? Morioh's some city out in the country, right? Misaka thinks the scientific Academy City would drive people like you away."

"Morioh is... a quieter town. A peaceful town," the man who called himself Kira replied, folding his arms behind his back, "Not like this place. And... I don't know how I got here. It is... quite distressing," he said, breaking into a small cold sweat, which he would try to conceal by wiping it off his brow with his hand.

He raised an eyebrow when Worst would start talking, but he seemed to at least get that her... nickname was Worst. Seemed a little derogatory, but it wasn't his business, and he wasn't going to make it his.

"Believe me, this... is definitely not my scene," Kira said, continuing to nervously fidget about, his eyes avoidant of Worst as he fiddled with his hair, "But... Before I can think about how to get home, I need to find someone. Have you seen a young girl, perhaps around your age, with dark red hair and twintails... wearing some... ah, less than modest clothing. You see, my niece can be quite mischievous, and can snake away from me when I'm not looking."

Worst raised an eyebrow, giving Kira the kind of condescending look that said "Really?" as he declared he had no idea how he got here. Some grown up just waltzed into Academy City without meaning to? Was that even possible? She wasn't sure, but the probability wasn't exactly 0. Probably.

"You got dementia already, old man?"

He didn't seem that old, but if he was forgetting things like that his early...

Though as he mentioned a niece, most people probably would've just thought he was looking for a rebellious niece that didn't want to hang out with her uncle or something. Worst might have believed it as well were it a normal person saying it. But he set off all kinds of alarms in her mind. Nervous, doesn't know how he got here despite supposedly looking for a niece at the same time, she simply didn't believe him at this point. But that just brought her full circle. She still wasn't sure what she felt like doing.

"Misaka hasn't seen someone like that." She shook her head as she replied honestly. "You might want to keep a closer eye on her, or some...unkindly people might get their hands on your little niece, kukuku."

Well, even if she apprehended him or something, she certainly didn't want to have to talk to the cops or something. Best to just leave him alone to his devices, if he felt so inclined. Maybe she could tell Accelerator about him. Whenever he came back.

sYBxpfP.jpg

Giving a somewhat unamused and deadpan look at Worst after her condescending quips, she would be able to see Kira's hand and eye twitch for a second, and then... a strange sight. With her Radio Noise, an electromagnetic wave could be seen suddenly appearing beside Kira, though it registered in the world as what Worst would be able to see as a giant blur (resembling heat waves that one would see in blazing hot Summers) in the air in the shape of a body with... cat ears.

Kira himself simply stood there silently for an almost uncomfortable moment, the "wave" in the air seen only by Worst simply floating there for a moment, before it would suddenly disappear as abruptly as it had appeared, mysteriously sinking into his body. Some people would perhaps call that an evil spirit or something like that, but who could tell for sure what Worst had actually seen?

Eventually, Kira finally spoke, this time in a somewhat lower voice.

"... I see. Well, I shall go back to looking for her then. Thank you for at least listening, Miss... Misaka. I should be on my way then in that case."

He didn't look very thankful though.

Worst's eyes widened just slightly as her esper ability recognized something incoming. Something that could only been seen through Radio Noise. As her eyes moved to look at what was causing the feedback, she saw a strange blur in the shape of a stranger body. Exactly what kind of esper power was that supposed to be? And why was he threatening it on her? She knew she'd intentionally been quite abrasive, which was par for the course on her part anyway, but did he plan to attack her just for that? What sort of attack was this?

A stray spark flew from her head as she subconsciously prepared for combat. If they were going to fight, she wasn't about to give the enemy the first attack, and she especially wasn't going to get hit unaware. Though fortunately, it seemed, he didn't act on whatever impulse had caused him to activate his ability in public like that.

8PduTJR.png

"Misaka said to call her Worst, right? Whatever, Misaka doesn't really care what you want to call her. See ya."

With that, she put both hands on her cart to try to move on past the strange man. Messing with someone potentially dangerous didn't benefit her in any way, and the #1 wasn't around anyway, so she didn't particularly feel like fighting. Speaking of him, though, maybe she could complain to him about the suspicious guy later to blow off the steam the conversation had just built up.

Wordlessly, Kira began to walk away, his business done with Worst. Still, when he would pass by her, she couldn't help but feel a strange "menacing" aura from him, like there was something definitely sketchy about him. Either way, it didn't seem like there was much she could do about him, so perhaps it was best to let him be.

With that, as Worst would continue to shop by herself for the requested items, Accelerator still gone for the moment, she would eventually find herself stopped once again by someone. This time, however, instead of bumping into someone, a hand from behind would reach forward and tug at the back of her clothes, just barely noticeable enough for her. Standing behind Worst would be a young girl, perhaps around her biological age, with twin ponytails and rather... revealing clothing. At least, for someone who was out in the open, standing in an area not touched by the Dark Side of Academy City.

Though then again, the market was a dangerous place. Killer cabbages could be anywhere.

tumblr_inline_mxfkzvRl961roks1t.jpg

"Y-Yo... Uh, would you happen to be a Sister by any chance?" The girl asked, a surprisingly intense look in her eyes as she would gaze upon Worst, her posture somewhat stiff for some reason.

At the tug, Worst looked over her shoulder.

Sgmv8bA.png

"...And you're the niece?"

Well wasn't she the social butterfly today. The girl now approaching her certainly resembled the description the obviously suspicious man had provided Worst. Worst highly doubted she was actually his niece or anything, but it also couldn't just be a coincidence that the girl Kira had described appeared shortly after meeting Kira himself.

Crossing her arms, she turned around fully to meet her gaze. Ugh, too tense. She wasn't always like that, was she? Still, intensity aside, Worst liked the look in her eyes. They weren't those of someone clean, if her choice in outfit wasn't enough to demonstrate that.

"So, what do you want?"

She figured her face was enough of a real answer to the girl's question.

"... The what?"

The twin-tailed girl would only give a blink of confusion at Worst's initial words, raising an eyebrow and giving her a weird look for a brief period of time, before shaking her head a little and clearing her throat, focusing her gaze back on Worst.

"I'll take that as a yes. If you look like that, then you've gotta be the one Tsuchimikado talked about."

"God, he was right... The one Misaka with a chest bigger than mine, huh..."

She cleared her throat again.

"Name's Musujime. Say, you didn't happen to run into a creepy tall-ish blonde man in a weirdly colored suit, did you? He's sort of... apparently a murderer. A really strong one at that."

How casual.

It seemed the girl wasn't so slow so as to not recognize a Sister when going about looking for one. Catching what she muttered under her breath, Worst smirked and gave her a knowing look. If one met her gaze for too long, one might see some condescension in there too.

"Musujime. So do you know Misaka's name, since you were out looking for Misaka?"

As the loosely-clothed girl got down to business though, Worst scratched the side of her head, seemingly annoyed.

"Misaka just passed him. A murderer, so that's what Misaka felt from him. He's an esper, right? He thought about using his power on Misaka, looked like astral projection or some advanced telekinesis or something. What level is he?"

Musujime's complexion seemed to pale just a bit at Worst's answer, as though her confirming her meeting with the man called Yoshikage Kira was something that made her heart drop. And it sorta did a little, though the fact that Worst was still alive meant that a bullet had been dodged. Not just one bullet, actually. Many, many close calls were had, and Worst probably didn't even know it!

Putting her hands on Worst's shoulder so suddenly, Musujime's intense gaze grew even more intense as she looked into the Sister's eyes for a moment. "... We need to go. If he left you alive, there's a reason, I'm sure! I'll fill you in as we go! I'll just say for now... His powers may be at the stage of a Level 4, but he's far more dangerous than perhaps even a Level 5 or so if you ask me, if only because of his behavior!" She exclaimed, getting off Worst and then proceeding to grab her arm and attempting to drag her towards some place, presumably out of the busy market.

The thing was, she was having a hard time with it, given she was smaller than Worst in at least three senses of the word.

"Nngh! ... Come on, just follow me!"

Worst resisted slightly as the twin-tailed girl tried to drag her off, just enough to prevent her from getting pulled. Crude, violent, or even downright murderous behavior didn't really scare her. Especially if he was only probably about as strong as she was. In terms of danger level, even Worst was probably usually more dangerous than that goody-two-shoes original. She was horribly outclassed in esper ability, but it was the mindset that made the danger. Like when that same level 5 had gone on a rampage to stop the Radio Noise project. That was dangerous. That was when a level 4 like her could no longer keep up in being dangerous.

So just a slightly more "loose" level 4 was nothing to worry about. Especially when common company for her included the #1 esper in Academy City. A level 4 would be put down by anti-skill or some other esper acting out alone soon enough.

But before all of that, Worst didn't even know who this person was, name aside, or where she was trying to take her.

"You're in a real hurry, aren't you? Misaka doesn't know you, and we're in a public store. That's probably the 'reason' he didn't attack. Misaka would be impressed if he had the balls to kill Misaka in public like this. But.."

Straightening her back and running a hand through her hair, she started to allow Musujime to take her along for the ride.

"...Misaka likes the look in your eyes. Can't be less interesting than shopping anyway, kuku."

The cart with the items she'd picked up remained alone. Sorry, chicken marsala.

...

"Oh, yeah. I guess that's true..." Musujime responded to Worst's first statement. She had the almost embarrassed kind of look on her face, like she felt stupid at the moment, but when Worst would continue speaking from there, she'd shake her head and revert back to her previously urgent expression on her features.

"A-Alright, let's go then! Besides, can't let any of the other people hearing what I got to say!"

With that, she would lead the Sister out of the crowded marketplace and into a more secluded alleyway kind of place, where they would hopefully be free of any nosy noses. Fortunately, it wasn't too far away from the market, so once their business would be done and cleared up, Worst could just go back to her shopping, right? Oh, one could only hope.

tumblr_inline_mxfkyix7LM1roks1t.jpg

Leaning against the wall, sitting beside Worst, she began to speak again.

"Okay, here's the deal. From what that damned Tsuchimikado cared to tell me, that blonde guy... He isn't from this world. Ever since World War III, there have been small instances of this happening. An anomaly would appear in this world, thanks to the power of the Right Hand of the Crimson Moon, whatever the hell that is, which the boss up in the Windowless Building would usually be able to correct," Musujime began to explain, crossing her arms and legs as she'd speak, "Though... He's a bit troubled, you see. He's thinking it might not exactly be the Right Hand of the Crimson Moon, but... something else instead."

"At first, they weren't anything special. Usually a lost rat, or hell, even less, sometimes just some leaves. But, not wanting to leave anything loose for whatever reason, the boss would make absolutely sure that they came back the way they came. However... Somehow, through some means even Tsuchimikado couldn't tell me, a few managed to slip past Crowley. But they weren't just rats or anything, they were human... Or at least, they were human in appearance. Because whoever they are, they've got even him spooked, rumor has it."

"Rumor has it" was only an expression of course. There weren't many rumors about the head of Academy City himself that concerned what exactly he was planning or how he felt about certain matters.

"So we've got guys like that man I mentioned running around. Wouldn't be so much of a problem if he'd cooperate, but... Well, I guess I really shouldn't hold out for nice things to happen."

She let out a brief, defeated pout.

"Anyway, you get the gist of it so far? I'm only at liberty to tell you all this because Tsuchimikado says you're privy to this kind of info for whatever reason. How well do you even know him anyway?"

However, just around the corner, unbeknownst to Musujime, a certain blonde man with purple clothing leaned against the wall, intently listening to every word the twin-tailed young woman said, the humanoid cat-like figure appearing beyond him, ready to strike should he deem the moment necessary.

Of course, with that kind of figure out in the open, by extension, he was also letting out a significant amount of electrical energy, possibly stemming from his brain having to maintain the figure.

"..."

Settling against the wall with Musujime, Worst crossed her arms as she listened, nodding every so and then as the information was dumped on her. Even she couldn't hide her surprise at the man supposedly being from another world. Just the idea of it made her want to laugh. But it didn't sound like a joke, what with how tense and anxious the girl had seemed the whole time. Not to mention something getting past Crowley himself was something she wanted to believe anyway. Even the head of this city couldn't get everything to dance to his tune, huh? If nothing else, she could enjoy that much in this...event. Enough so that she let a vulpine smile crack her face.

"Misaka gets it. Mr. Murderer slips under that Crowley's nose, from some other place Misaka doesn't know about, and he's messing with his plan. Misaka can't say that doesn't sound interesting." She uncrossed her arms and stood up straight from the wall, throwing a sideways glance towards the other girl, tilting her head a little as she thought about the question. "Misaka just met him today so...not at all?"

Before she could get a response from Musujime, a familiar sensation came through Worst's Radio Noise. One similar to the one she'd experienced back at the market, a rather topical bit of electric "noise." But based on how Musujime was acting, it didn't seem like she'd noticed. Well, he was around the wall, after all. With his secret out, was he planning to kill the both of them? They were alone now, after all. Ironically, running off like this had put them into more danger than when she'd spoken with a murderer without knowing it.

Now the Sister just had to figure out a way to alert the other girl without giving it away to Kira.

"So, what do you need Misaka for? Do you want to find him, or something? Misaka wouldn't mind, as long as there's compensation for Misaka's efforts."

"Hmm, you don't know him at all, huh? Not even a name or--?"

Wait, what.

"C-Compensation?! I should be the one getting compensated here! The stupid mission Tsuchimikado gave me was more like to protect you while he'd give the gist of it to the Number One to let him deal with the situation! If anything, the point of all this is so that you can be wary and avoid him, and I'm supposed to be your bodyguard!"

...

Musujme started meekly poking her index fingers together. A sign of a sheepish attitude.

"T-Though I guess I'm not doing this right... Not my fault I've never been a bodyguard to a pretty strong person in their own right before! From what I've heard anyway..."

"A-Anyway! Stupid Tsuchimikado told me that it'd be troublesome if you ended up dying in the crossfire between the man and ITEM. Something about the Accelerator possibly going berserk and indiscriminately fucking everything up in a furious rampage... or something. How close are you two anyway? Never thought the Number One would let anyone get close to him. I mean, that's what that vector shield is for, right? So no one can get close to him unless he lets it happen," Musujime said. Her demeanor became more business-like and less overly nervous, the small woman taking a breath and leaning against the wall, arms still crossed. Unaware of the man's presence, it almost seemed like her guard was down at the moment.

This girl didn't even know his name, huh? She sure knew a lot about him for not knowing his name of all things. Was he that secretive? He sure gave his name out to her easily enough. Maybe it was a fake name? She wouldn't put it past a serial killer.

Though as Musujime overreacted, in her opinion, to her proposed compensation, the Sister couldn't help but cackle as she switched between shouting and being shy.

"Hehh, a little girl like you is supposed to protect Misaka? You know Misaka is a Sister, right? Misaka is a level 4. Are you even an esper? No, wait, you'd have to be, if a kid like you is a bodyguard. Though Misaka isn't even a year old..."

It also seemed that whatever her power was, it wasn't useful for keeping track of the man, which seemed a little counter-intuitive to her, but that wasn't any of her business. No, wait, if they assigned a Level 4 a bodyguard, that meant he was actually pretty dangerous, didn't it? She didn't want to bother tracking the killer down or anything troublesome like that, but she didn't want to die either. It seemed that, by some bizarre coincidence, she had no choice in the matter.

Though as she listened to the rest of what Musujime had to say, the clone smirked, that line of thought temporarily derailed. She leaned forward, placing an arm on the shorter girl's shoulder as she placed her mouth near the other girl's ear. Uncomfortably so.

"Ah, the Number One and Misaka? Hmm, Misaka will leave it to your imagination~" Taking a pause simply to observe the girl's reaction, she quickly followed up with the other reason, besides teasing, that she'd done this. "Yoshikage Kira. You're the body guard, but you don't even know when the enemy is near. Misaka is sooo scared."

She kept her voice low, not playful like she'd led it off. She moved her head back far enough for Musujime to be able to see her eyes, which were aimed at the corner Kira was hiding behind at the moment. Better to have allies in a fight than not to.

"H-Hey, I'm not a kid! I bet I'm way older even biologically than you! I-It's not my fault that you were manufactured with those little advantages!" Musujime said, apparently getting flustered a bit when Worst would speak somewhat condescendingly towards her, the shorter girl promptly poking Worst in the chest with a stern expression, her other hand rested on her hip.

Still, when Worst leaned in and violate her personal bubble so suddenly, Musujime's forced gusto disappeared as quickly as it had materialized, the twin-tailed young woman's face flushing just a bit as her eyes widened quite a bit, both reactions more out of surprise from being encroached upon so suddenly, even if it was from a girl, than anything else. After all, she didn't have any reason to be actually flustered, since she was more firmly comfortable with her orientation.

...

Just not when Tsuchimikado (and occasionally Accelerator) slandered her with such derogatory titles like "shotacon."

Still, when Worst would subtly warn Musujime of the man's possible presence, she'd get the hint, wising up quickly and nodding, talking softly back, ignoring the jab at her. "H-He's... Where?"

Hoping that Worst wasn't once again pulling her leg, Musujime began to quietly draw her corkscrews and flashlight with both hands.

"The corner. Misaka can sense in an electrical signal coming from over there." Worst stole a quick glance at Musujime's choice of weapons before continuing. "If you have any useful information on him for Misaka, now would be a good time to share."

Fighting without knowing the enemy's power wasn't smart, but sometimes you didn't have the luxury of choosing when to fight. With how close he was, Worst had no doubt that he'd heard everything they'd been talking about. Would a serial killer just let people who knew about him run free? If she was him, she sure wouldn't.

Backing off entirely from Musujime once the twin-tailed girl had gotten a chance to say her piece, the Sister began slowly inching towards the corner, small sparks of blueish electricity visible from her bangs.

Then suddenly, she realized she had no idea what her supposed bodyguard could do.

"...What do you do, anyway?"

"Well, I know that he's really... uh... persistent."

...

Yeah, their chances were great.

"Oh, and from what I saw, it looked like he's able to generate combustible matter and... Well, I suppose the easier way to explain it is that he can make explosions. Or make other things explodey. If we can outsmart him, I'll bet that maybe we can also find a weakness of his while we're at it!"

Simple on paper, but destructive when applied in reality. Like most Esper powers, like the Railgun when you'd describe her ability as "electrical manipulation" and nothing more.

When Worst would get against the wall and ready herself, before presenting a question. Now didn't really seem like the time, especially considering the likelihood of an enemy being nearby to listen to it, but far be it from her to do something as rude as ignore a question, or anything more than that, riiight?

"Oh. Well, basically, I'm a teleporter, though my specialty is more... teleporting other things. I focus on what to specifically teleport with this handy thing," she whispered, gesturing towards the flashlight in her hand, before positioning herself behind Worst against the wall, "... Just watch this."

And then with that, moving in front of Worst as though intending to make an active move to defend her as a self-proclaimed bodyguard for once, Musujime would rush from out of the alley and face the corner that Worst was facing, tightly clutching her flashlight like it was her best weapon, whilst holding multiple corkscrews between her fingers for support. And from there, it all went downhill.

From Musujime's perspective, the only thing she had in sight was... tread marks on the ground? Yeah, tread marks... as though some kid had ran nearby and left a mark on the ground with his sneakers, or hell, maybe it's an invisible, miniature tank that was rolling around, though further observation had her see that the marks stopped just several inches away from her. She kept her guard up, wondering what those mysterious marks were, or where they had come from. No sign of the man tho--

BOOM!

An explosion, its origin coming from the space right in front of where the marks on the ground had stopped, would suddenly ring out, the sheer force of it knocking Musujime several feet back, her body hitting the ground rather roughly and skidding a few more inches before halting with that. If the explosion itself didn't knock her out, the rough landing of head on concrete certainly did. She went out without a sound, and from there, the man named Yoshikage Kira would suddenly appear from beyond the corner.

tumblr_nmmuq1BwrG1uol1rmo1_500.gif

"No weakness, girl," he said, looking in the direction of Musujime's unconscious (and hopefully not dead) body, before quickly diverting his attention right back to Worst.

The mysterious, poltergeist-like presence that Worst felt alongside him was stronger than ever, if only because he was now so close to her and he was in the heat of the moment, having demonstrated his power. Now, not only was the outline of the figure more visible, Worst being able to more clearly make out the figure's humanoid shape with cat ears on it, she would also be able to see a faintly pink color scheme on top of it... like a pink gas contained in the shape of a cat-like human floating beside Kira.

"So there is a way out of this place, and all I have to do is find this Windowless Building... I thank you for the help... Your name was Misaka, was it?" Kira said menacingly, his eyes glaring right down at her, "But I'm afraid that even if you're from another world, I can't have any witnesses. You understand, don't you?"

And with that, the figure beside him began to move, raising its fist...

Alright, she had the rundown of his abilities, her bodyguard's abilities, and they had the advantage of him not knowing that they knew he was there. They had this, no problem. Musujime just had to teleport those corkscrew things at his head or something, and...

Oh. Or she'd get blown up. Poor girl should've stuck to helping her push the cart around or something. With their roles reversed, as if Musujime had ever actually done anything as a bodyguard, Worst just sneered back at the man with the strange power. The girl hadn't died for her mistake, probably, but if she messed up here she had a feeling he wouldn't be so nice as to leave it at that.

Despite the strange aura Kira seemed to put out, after hanging around the #1 in Academy City she could put confidence forward regardless. But there were other things that Musujime's explanation hadn't covered. What did that cat thing have to do with his explosion power? Did it just generate explosive material, or did it explode things it touched? Or did it not even need to touch at all? Furthermore, why did it take this form?

With no answers likely to come to light, all Worst could do was act now.

"Ah, Misaka's flattered you remember. But Misaka is a bad girl, and likes witnessing things Misaka's eyes shouldn't see~"

Wanting to create range between herself and that humanoid cat, she took a large step back. If his power worked at a distance it was meaningless, but if that thing needed to reach her her ability could give her the advantage! Blue sparks flew from her bangs, a spear of electricity seeking to strike Kira's forehead. If she knocked him out with lightning speed, she wouldn't have to worry about his powers at all!

Perhaps astonishingly enough, the figure would also move at lightspeed, dashing right in front of Kira, as though to protect his body, while in the middle of the motion of lowering his arm, which became the target of the electricity that Worst would generate. The spear would seem to penetrate the so-called spirit's arm, part of it adopting a sort of wavy characteristic as it might have remained inside for some time, and yet, Kira himself would let out a pained groan as though the spear had still hit him. He slid back a few inches even though his actual body wasn't touched, though one could assume that the figure soaked up some of the damage somehow, as though it were connected or linked to him in some way on a deep level.

Still, there wasn't much time to think over that. Recovering quickly, Kira gritted his teeth and glared at Worst, eyes filled with determination to erase her as quickly and cleanly as possible.

"Eh... So you have a special ability too? From the looks of it, this city is just full of bizarre people like you," the blonde man muttered, clutching his arm with his good one, "It may have different fundamentals, since I don't see another figure beside you, but if you're a threat to the quiet life I need to return to, I have no use for learning more about you. And in which case..."

As he spoke on and on, the figure seemed to recover as much as Kira himself did. The figure would raise its arm again, its appearance becoming just a little clearer as time went on, as would Kira.

edoeHRo.gif

"... I'll blow you to smithereens!"

With that exclamation, it rushed towards Worst, its arm swinging right at her head, though one could only assume that a mean hook was going to be the least horrible thing he had in mind for her.

"Ah, Misaka sure is lonely without a figure beside her, isn't she?"

So he could block lightning. That was bad news. Furthermore, according to him, the fundamentals of their powers were different. Knowledge on esper abilities wouldn't help her predict what was coming next. Fortunately, that wasn't necessary thanks to Musujime's foolishne- er, sacrifice. It made things explode, and since he swung his arm that he meant he had to make contact!

...Probably.

Acting quickly, Worst ducked and rolled to her left, moving under the strange figure's arm. Recovering on one knee, another lightning spear shot forward from her bangs. She'd learned the first time, though. The lightning by itself wasn't much issue for him to block. It got some damage in, but she didn't really want to deal with a guy who made things explode for too long.

Igniting the air around her with purplish electricity, the Sister lurched forward at high speed as she tried to catch Kira in between attacks. Maybe if she shocked him directly and not whatever that cat-like thing was, it'd work out. Electricity sparked from her arm as she tried to touch and taser the man from another world!

The figure's fist would slam right into the wall beside Worst, causing a dent in it where her head could have ended up had she not made a move. Momentarily slowed down, the man named Kira would attempt to have the figure pull the figure's fist out, having accidentally lodged it fairly deep in the wall. Finally, after a brief moment, he'd manage to pull it out, and with that, would attempt to bring it back around to hit Worst in the temple.

However, she would be able to get a hit in as her advance would pay off, if only for a little, as just before the figure's fist would connect with her head. Worst would successfully taser Kira, causing the older man to let out several unintelligible noises as he'd try to yell out in pain. After a while, he'd will himself off of Worst, pulling himself away from her as the figure would weakly attempt to push her away. Hitting the ground with a noticeable thump sound, his wallet falling out of his coat pocket along with a few coins inside, the blonde man would finally let out his scream now, unable to hold himself back.

tumblr_od97q2PwBT1tw8aqjo2_540.jpg

"A-Ah... Ahhghhh... Aaaaaahhhh!!!"

He writhed in agony for a few brief moments, but he wasn't down for the count so quickly. With perhaps a surprising amount of endurance, fueled by either his desire to escape back home or some superhuman durability, he would shoot a rather unsavory look at Worst. If looks could kill...

"You... Youuuuuu..." He growled like an animal, "If you had stayed put, I would have let you die quickly, but now... Now... Nowwwwwww!!"

Without even finishing whatever he had wanted to say, Kira would will the figure to pick up the coins that had fallen out of his wallet, flicking one of them right at Worst. However, perhaps due to his condition which could have resulted in temporarily impaired functions, the coin would miss her and hit the ground several feet away from her, exploding upon contact. That was enough for her to get the gist, right?

Without a moment's hesitation, it flicked another coin right at her now! And then another... and then another!

Worst blew on her hand like a smoking gun, staring down at the man she'd just electrocuted. Her ability was at level 4, so a normal person was in no condition to fight after a shock like that, and his ability didn't seem to be the kind that covered his body. In other words, the battle was as good as hers.

Unfortunately, things didn't seem to pan out that way. Despite his screams of pain indicating the attack had been effective, this guy was still up and kicking. Still, as long as that cat thing didn't touch her, she'd be safe, and now he was injured so she could probably get him with some long-ranged attacks now. Her usual smirk appeared on her face, one hand scratching her head as he yelled and screamed.

latest

"You don't give up, huh? Misaka doesn't care much for that attitude, though. You can't touch Misaka from over the-"

*BOOM*

A coin smashed into the ground and...exploded? He did have range outside that strange cat-like projection? Thank god for the aftershock of her shocks, or she'd be in a number of pieces on the ground now. What was his ability then? Exploding anything he touched, including inanimate objects? Hopefully he couldn't do something ridiculous like explode the entire ground then. The clone would be pretty screwed if he could do that.

She'd just have to hope he couldn't.

Spotting the first coin, a jolt of electricity leaped out to strike it and explode it prematurely. But soon another two came towards her with hardly any time to react. What an annoying guy. Fortunately, though, coins were made of metal, and she was an electromancer, even if one not on par with #3 in Academy City. Emitting an electric field, she sent a magnetic pulse out, flinging the metallic coins right back at their sender.

But her ability wasn't quite as exact in usages like this, especially under such a strict time constraint, so while one came straight towards the man, the other just soared off to the side.

tCiNZWh.jpg

"H-Huh?! HYAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!"

BOOM!

Having not expected the power exhibited by Worst, Kira would let out a gasp and a scream when the coin would land several inches away from him, exploding on impact upon the ground. While it wasn't close enough that it might have killed him, it had managed to at least knock his form away, his body coming out of sight as it would be flung behind the corner of the wall.

Before Worst would be able to run forward to investigate the full extent of his fate, a vaguely familiar voice would call out from behind, coming closer and closer to her.

"Oiii, I know it was in self-defense, but is it really okay to be so unsubtle about your fight? If someone sees, they might get the wrong idea, or worse off, the right idea," Motoharu Tsuchimikado said, appearing out of thin air, though without Accelerator. Instead, he held a strange device in his hands that faintly glowed a shade of red, though it didn't seem like he immediately felt like explaining it.

270

Looking cautiously at where Kira's body had flown over, Tsuchimikado, with a serious expression, would glance at Worst. "You okay? You better be, or Accel-kun's gonna be reeeeaaally pissed that you got hurt when I dragged him off you!"

The blonde man was on the ropes. Her ploy had succeeded, and she just had to go make sure she finished the job. Despite appearances, Worst was the kind to make sure she'd completed her task thoroughly. But before she could do so, the boy that had taken Accelerator off somewhere appeared before her.

Shifting her posture, the Sister seemed to position herself to look more relaxed, placing a hand on her hip as stray sparks of electricity faded away.

"That's true. Misaka wasn't in the mood to be blown up though, partner stealer." She stole a glance at the strange device in his hand before he asked his next question. A mischievous smirk appeared on her face as she spoke. "#1 will be pissed, huh? How hurt Misaka is might depend on how much you're willing to pay, kuku. Though, shouldn't you be more worried about twin-tails over there?"

She pointed towards the presumably unconscious form of Musujime. After a quick pause, she started speaking again.

"Misaka is curious, though, what's that thing you're holding onto there?"

Tsuchimikado bit his lip lightly at the sight of Musujime's wounded form. It seemed that she was still unconscious, but most likely still alive. Of course, while that was the truth, Tsuchimikado had no way of knowing that without checking more closely, and he wasn't about to do that. Not while the explosive killer was really right around the corner! Even a weirdo like him had a concept of self-preservation as well, after all.

"Knew something like this would happen... I realized the guy was probably gonna end up finding you, since I was the one who sent Musujime to find and protect you!"

...

"Well, at least Accel-kun doesn't care about her nearly as much as you. Still... Since I had him search for you on the other side of the district, it might just be me for now."

In a certain light, it was almost comical how he didn't seem too concerned for Musujime.

In response to Worst's question, he would look down at it briefly, before take a breath. "Let's just say it's... a thing. A certain little thing that would be able to grant the blonde man's wish of coming back home where he belongs! Can't leave any evidence of him ever being here!" He exclaimed, before clearing his throat and hushing up his voice a little, "That said, looks like great timing on my part that you managed to soften him up by the time I got her. Now, I'll handle the rest!~"

With that, putting up his guard, he would run around the corner, only to let out a quizzical noise as it would seem that he didn't see anything. Sure enough, Kira was out of sight if Worst would run over to check and back him up. Cautiously, he would take a step forward, looking around for where he might have gone. Judging from the structure of the area, Tsuchimikado was able to make the assumption that he was around the next corner of the building, several feet away. Clicking his tongue, he'd gingerly jog over, expecting to catch Kira limping away from the area or so, only for an unexpected thing to happen.

BOOM!

When the young blonde would come near a trash can on the side, it suddenly exploded, the combustion enough to send Tsuchimikado's body flying back a few feet and causing him to drop the device that he intended to use on Kira. The young man fell on his face, his body having spun around in mid-air, a small crack audible as one could only hope that it was his sunglasses that had shattered, and not something more important.

"..."

Sure enough, from around the corner, Kira would be seen limping out, barely able to stand on his own feet, clothes partially burned off thanks to the bomb redirected at him earlier. With more coins still in his hand, and murderous intent in his eyes, he would say nothing. No threats, no sounds. He would only throw the entire handful of coins right at Worst, a minimum of six of them flying right at her and exploding in the air, the serial killer hoping to get the Sister with that!

Worst rounded the corner with the hawaiian shirt wearing blonde, figuring she might as well watch the end of whatever mess she'd gotten herself wrapped up in. He'd been pretty beat up, so Tsuchimikado would probably just have to use that whatever device he was holding in his hand, and that'd be that. Fortunately, their ruckus of a fight hadn't really attracted too much attention despite the flashy nature of the explosions and lightning. Hopefully it'd stay that wa-

BOOM!

Things were never so simple, huh? Even the clone couldn't hide her surprise as the young man's body went flying. Honestly she couldn't really care less about whether he was okay or not, but after the explosion she'd launched right back at him, she hadn't expected him to still be in fighting condition. Which, in turn, left her little time to react to the barrage of explosive coins flying her way.

Exploding the air around her and pulling herself towards the metal inside a nearby building, Worst managed to avoid the brunt of the explosion. But she couldn't deflect the shock or sound of the explosions, her ears ringing as her back ached from slamming her body into the wall. Was that what she got for joking about potentially being injured? What a pain in the ass.

Picking out a two centimeter nail, she held it out on one hand in Kira's direction. Her arm sparked with electricity as she fired the metal like a bullet!

"...!"

Eyes widening in an instant like a cat, the catlike shadow looming over Kira, evidently able to react as fast if not even faster than the rate at which the nail was going, would seem to time itself just right, acting like a beast fueled by adrenaline, as it would swing its arm and punch the very side of the projectile, hoping to cause it to veer off-course, even if the electricity surging through it might cause his own arm to be disabled momentarily.

Then again, it could have been worse for him, right?

Not even grunting in pain, Kira had effectively punched away the nail, and though he suffered the consequence for it, he wouldn't let it deter him, the businessman only continuing to walk forward towards Worst, the figure raising its other arm, practically ignoring any lingering pain, confident that he had her cornered at this very moment, and he wasn't going to let this chance slip past him! Not if he could help it.

...

However, it couldn't be helped.

CRASH!

From the side, a trash can suddenly appeared, flying through the air at high speeds. It was difficult to determine just how heavy it was, though judging from its size, it couldn't have been very heavy at all. However, that wouldn't stop the object from hitting Kira, almost like a speeding car, strong enough that his entire body had flown out of sight.

From beyond the wall to the left, yet another familiar voice could be heard.

lDIL7wa.png

"... I shoulda known better than to let Tsuchimikado do his own thing. Everything just gets fucked up," Accelerator mumbled, posed in a throwing position, before standing upright again.

"H-Hey... I only split us up... 'c-cause I knew you'd follow me! Gotcha..." Tsuchimikado said with a weak chuckle, before breaking into a small cough. Evidently, he was still conscious, and even seemed to be having it better than Musujime, as he'd force himself to his feet after the exchange, dusting off his dirty clothes, though he'd stick to leaning against the wall for the time being.

"Shut the fuck up, you ruined my fuckin' day like this, you know," he said gruffly, pleasant as always to interact with, walking over. With Kira down for the count, at least for the time being in an almost anti-climactic manner, he wouldn't bother checking up to see if Tsuchimikado and Musujime were alright, instead making his way over to Worst and, without hesitating, suddenly grabbing her by the collar, balling his fist in her dress as he'd glare at her.

I3DIjSj.png

"I thought I told you not to disappear on me, and then you... did the thing, I see. So don't do that again," Accelerator said with a tough, almost stern even, tone, before he'd clear his throat, "After all... The fine women of the house would give me hell if you got yourself lost out in Academy City. And I'd rather not get an earful of Yomikawa's lectures again."

And he could cancel out sound from his perspective.

If Worst was observant enough at the given moment, she might have been able to observe the slightest hint of the Number One trying to hide what might have been, one might daresay, concern. Possibly taking notice of this as well, he'd suddenly avert his gaze, glancing over in Tsuchimikado's direction, the somewhat wounded young man attempting to examine Musujime's condition in the meantime.

"Oi. Tsuchimikado, how good did I get that guy?"

"Uh... Well, so good that when he hit the ground, he rolled over to the end of the other side of the building, so now I can only just see his limp legs sticking out. Not much else."

"If that's all you can fuckin' see, take off those dumb sunglasses then," the Number One would retort, his grip on Worst softening considerably, though he didn't seem to notice just yet. "Whatever... He's probably out cold if he hasn't gotten up by now..."

Well, shit.

He could even knock that aside, huh? She'd underestimated this middle-aged man it seemed, even after all the trouble he'd put her through. And here she thought she'd be able to finish the job herself. Couldn't be helped, then. Musujime was down. the strange blonde boy was out of it, and it wasn't like a certain someone could make it in time if he was searching for her elsewhere.

...

But the blow to finish her never came. Instead, a trash can that acted like a bullet obliterated her opponent. An attack that came from none other than Academy City's strongest Esper. The Sister let out a cackle as the white-haired boy vented at Tsuchimikado. Poor guy got on the wrong side of Accelerator.

And as he gripped her collar, she suddenly realized that perhaps she did as well.

Still, Worst wasn't disturbed at all as he reprimanded her. Her smirk only widened, especially as she noticed the "weaker" tone his voice began to take.

fpwJpt6.png

"Ara, Misaka might get lost if she'll get an earful from you too~" she replied, not seeming to mind the now somewhat looser grip he had on her.

qW9mvak.png

"Don't even think about it," he spoke in an admonishing manner, his hand moving to her wrist where he'd move his hold to. Accelerator might have been a little too gruff about it to the point that he was practically so protective that he was openly hostile about it, but... Perhaps there was some humor to be found in that. An ironic, wry sort of humor that Tsuchimikado, even in his current condition, was able to observe as a bystander to the banter going on, though he didn't dare comment on it.

He liked his head where it was.

That said, the sunglasses wearing young man would clear his throat, inserting himself into the conversation. "Yaaaah, and to think, I'm the reason you're probably going to miss out on a delicious home-cooked dinner!" He exclaimed, referring to the chicken marsala from earlier, the poor abandoned shopping cart likely to have been recovered by someone around, "Though... In any case, if the little lover's quarrel is over, I'm sorry that you had to be wrapped up in all this! You're not banged up too badly, are you, Worst-saaan?" Tsuchimikado inquired, almost ignorant of his own injuries as he'd clap his hands together in an apologetic form.

vnbWUVd.png

"Aren't you forgetting someone who is definitely wounded?"

"Oh, don't be so cold, Accel-kun! If anything, your killer grip might end up breaking her wrist if you're not careful," Tsuchimikado shot back, before acknowledging what he'd said with a nod, hopping over to Musujime's unconscious form, picking her up, and hoisting her over his shoulder with a labored grunt.

Meanwhile, Accelerator, surprisingly so, almost seemed to be embarrassed by what the blonde had said to him, as he'd slowly loosen his grip on her yet again, before this time, entirely letting go.

"A-Anyway... Let's just send that asshole back to his world. It'd be much easier to kill him, I'm still saying."

Worst hadn't really planned to get lost in the first place of course, but the rise it got out of Academy City's strongest esper was too much to pass up on. As he gripped her wrist, she raised her other hand to cover her mouth in feign surprise, though her smirk and tone of voice caused the gesture to fail to belie her real intentions.

"You're so rough with Misaka, but Misaka doesn't mind. Kuku."

She seemed content with ignoring Tsuchimikado's question for now in favor of watching Accelerator's expression. The slight embarrassment she could catch from his movements and voice was rather satisfying in a strange way. Worst raised one hand and allowed some electricity to ebb and flow around it as she stared over in Kira's direction.

"Misaka agrees, how do you think we should kill him, #1?" It was likely that she was just teasing, but who knew if she'd follow up if told to?

"Yeah, yeah... I'm sure you at least minded when that Kira guy was rough with you. Shoulda let him push you around for a little while longer if I was gonna get this instead of a thanks," Accelerator grumbled. At this point, for him, Worst's teasing were like white noise in the background. It wasn't like they got to him or anything; he was just used to it, and expressed that in somewhat unorthodox means as far as response goes.

"In any case... I was thinking something flashy. Y'know, to go with his flashy bomb power. Maybe I'll reverse his blood flow, or--"

"H-Hey, I already told you guys the reasons why you can't do all that!" Tsuchimikado exclaimed, to which Accelerator rolled his eyes and sigh, a bit annoyed, but complied nonetheless, walking over and taking the strange device that was supposedly for transporting the killer back to his home world.

He could be their problem there.

"Fine, fine... Let's just get this over with then. And then you can leave me the fuck alone."

"That's better."

th_toaru12.png

With that, Accelerator would walk forward, choosing to be the one to bring Kira out, the device gripped in one hand as he moved. "I'll do it then," he spoke calmly, letting out a short breath, "It might be a little annoying, but at least I won't be hurt if he were to try to set up a--"

BOOM!

"--trap..."

Almost like clockwork, the moment Accelerator's foot idly tapped the trash can that he'd thrown earlier on his way towards Kira, the can would explode. However, Kira made one mistake. He didn't know what the power of the Accelerator entailed. And thus, the force of the explosion practically flew away from the Number One, reminiscent of a mighty wind repelling a visible gas. However, even if the explosion failed to harm him in any way, there was still an annoying barrier between him and Kira.

The smokescreen.

Upon registering what exactly had just happened, the Esper's eyes would widen in mild alarm, leaping forward with the use of his power to go through the smokescreen, his Reflection ability erasing any worry that Kira would be waiting for him, somehow still well and active, with another more lethal trap. However, unexpectedly so, what he would find on the other side of the smokescreen was... nothing at all. Kira's body was simply gone, having disappeared in a matter of seconds, and not even a trail of blood to follow either.

"Tch, what the hell...?! Clever bastard to put a bomb on what I send his way. But where the hell is..."

...

40djwXU.png

"Worst!"

As his alarm suddenly grew from there, he made use of his power once again to leap back in order to quickly travel over to where Tsuchimikado and Worst were. Hurrying back, Accelerator dashed over in front of Worst protectively, looking around for wherever Kira might have gone.

"How did he--?!" Tsuchimikado exclaimed, making a dash over to the wall, Musujime's body still in tow, also keeping wary of where Kira was.

...

Except until after a few moments would pass, when nothing would happen. And it didn't look like Kira was going to pop up anywhere to attack.

Meanwhile, Kira, having made his grand escape at the last moment, limped over to an unknown part of the city, applying pressure to his bleeding arm in order to stop it. No one should be able to find him. But... This wasn't the last they'd see of him.

For the only way to make sure he lived a quiet life, regardless of where he was, was to make sure no one disrupted that peace. He had to ensure the silence of those who knew of his true nature. By any means possible.

That was his resolution.

Worst was hardly worried, even as the trash can exploded. To her, that twin-tailed girl, and the weird blonde guy? A power like this could be deadly. For all the firepower she could put behind her electricity, her body was only that of a high school girl's, after all. Accelerator was different, though. His redirection made him untouchable against a purely physical power like bombs. The heat and shockwave were all thrown in the opposite direction, right back to their source.

So the clone was just idling, staring into space, until she suddenly heard her name screamed out. And the Number One returned without Kira.

"Fufu, there's a bad student on our hands then, is there?" Worst spoke lightly of the situation, giving a shrug as she took a quick glance around herself. No blood trail, no scraps of clothes, nothing to get a lead on him. What a pain. Having someone like that running around would make it hard to let her guard down when going out on the town with that little product of the Dark May Project.

Still, there he couldn't have gone too far in his condition.

...

Right?

Regardless, she had found Accelerator's panicked reaction quite amusing. Getting his attention immediately like that was strangely satisfying. Probably something to blame on the Misaka Network.

"Misaka assumes we need to catch him now, right?" she asked, crossing her arms. She didn't like doing extra work, exactly, but it left a bad taste in her mouth to just let things run about like this. Not much for her to gain from it after all if he planned to target her again.

Though with Academy City's strongest around, it wasn't like she figured she'd ever be in serious trouble from some lone killer, right?

"Tch... And to think I was almost worried for a moment," Accelerator grumbled in a grouchy manner, most of his initial concern for Worst having subsided as quickly as it had appeared after her initial remark. Still, he didn't let his guard back down just yet, still looking around for Kira to make his move.

... Though he never did.

Reluctantly, he eventually would let up, his eyes remaining narrowed and wary however. With a sigh, the Esper would scratch the back of his head lightly with his fingers. "I guess so. If we split up, we might be able to get the drop on him and--"

"No. This is enough for the time being," Tsuchimikado would suddenly cut in seriously, to Accelerator's surprise.

"What did you just...?!"

"While he may be weakened in this state, that only makes him more dangerous. A caged animal is a lethal one, after all. 'Sides, wouldn't want to alarm the general public if you ran around with such a scary look on your face, Accel-kun," Tsuchimikado spoke, still holding Musujime as he spoke, "You may be the invincible Number One, but the rest of us aren't. We're not exactly in tip-top shape either. Worst-san must be exhausted at the moment too," he continued, gesturing towards the unconscious twin-tailed girl, and then to Worst.

"So... What, are you fuckin' saying we let him go on his merry way elsewhere?"

"No, no... Knowing him, the only place he's going is back here," the blonde shook his head, "He's not gonna let us go free so easily just because he's weakened at the moment. More than likely, he'll probably come to us instead, so there's no need to waste any effort returning the favor. If my people-reading skills are still as effective as ever, then he'll want to tie up all the loose ends and make sure there's no one alive who knows what his true nature entails."

Accelerator furrowed his brow at Tsuchimikado's words, still holding the strange device in his hands. All this trouble for a guy who would probably just be better off dead in the Number One's oh so humble opinion. How annoying. He took a moment to ponder what to say next, before finally opening his mouth.

"I'd hope you're not saying we just stay put and hope that you'll all have recovered and prepared yourself aptly enough once that asshole comes back around."

"No... You'll want to have the element of surprise on him. What I want you and Worst-san to do is leave a trail of breadcrumbs that'll lead him on to someplace where you'll be able to get the drop on him, preferably in a location with plenty of open space," he advised, before suddenly looking up at the afternoon sky, pursing his lips as he'd then muse to himself, "Hmm... Clouds are coming. And to think today started off so sunny too. You'll be in luck if it starts raining soon, 'cause then people will start scrambling to get inside. Except for him."

KviW1ze.png

"Great. I'm definitely feelin' lucky today," Accelerator sneered sarcastically in response, "And what'll you do then?"

"I'll leave it all in your hands, Accel-kun. You can handle that, right? I just need to get Musujime someplace safe, and then once you've got him, shoot me a call so I can get that cumbersome thing off your hands," the sunglasses-wearing teen replied, pointing at the device briefly, "In the meantime, you just worry about how you're gonna lead Kira out, and make sure your lady really is just fine, eh?" He'd say, before beginning to drag himself and Musujime away.

"Hey, wha...! Tch, so that's the plan, huh? I should have known better than to think I wasn't gonna be left with the short end of the stick," Accelerator grumbled, just standing there for a moment as Tsuchimikado began to leave rather abruptly, before finally turning to Worst, letting out a sigh as an uncomfortable expression began to get on his face, "In any case... You're... uh, fine, right? Don't need me to put a bandaid anywhere?" He asked in an acerbic fashion, though his tone hardly matched his eyes. It was as though he was trying to mask genuine concern with faux concern.

Lovely.

Worst just whistled as Tsuchimikado told them his plan of action. If the blonde was right, then combing the entirety of Academy City while trying not to attract too much attention in a fight between Espers wouldn't be necessary. He seemed serious enough this time at least, so with a shrug and a chuckle, the clone simply accepted that plan of action.

She had to admit, she kind of wanted to take the more dangerous route of hunting him down instead, but what was done was done. Besides, the funny expression on Accelerator's face now more than made up for it.

"Haha, you're so kind to Misaka today. What if Misaka said she needed a bandaid on her tits, huh?"

The electric esper threw a disconcerting smirk Accelerator's way.

th_toaru29.png

Sigh.

"I would have preferred a thanks or even at least some sort of grateful gesture for at least asking, but I suppose that's what I get for my troubles," Accelerator grunted, almost as though fancying himself a knight in sour armor, before running a hand through his thick, white hair (When was the last time he'd even gotten a haircut?) and letting out a sigh, "To think all this happened because you just wanted to get some goddamn ice cream..."

The Number One was a tad reluctant to leave the area so quickly after the man known as Kira had departed rather abruptly, but he knew that they'd have to take a new position somewhere else in the city, once they settled on where to settle, but until then, in the meantime, he began to turn around and...

"Just to be clear, it's not that I'm... being "nice" to you, alright? Like I said before, not that I should make a habit of repeating myself but... I have an obligation to protect you, don't I? Remember, Yomikawa and probably even Last Order likely don't realize what's been going on with us and in the city, so if we were to just come back and you happened to look all banged up for some mysterious reason, it wouldn't end well for me."

"Besides..."

He let out another sigh, this one far more drawn out than the previous one.

"I... personally don't want to see you get hurt either. Even though I'll bet you're probably dumb enough to let that guy beat you up a little more just to get satisfaction out of seeing me..."

Accelerator began to trail off, unable to finish his sentence. Crap, this was just humiliating already. He shouldn't have said anything. Nothing good ever comes of talking to Worst.

"Kuku..."

It was oddly satisfying having Accelerator fuss and talk so much over her. He seemed much more open about it without those two old ladies or that naive little girl around. That latter brat might have been the reason for the satisfaction, though. Channeling the negative emotions of the Misaka Network came with its ups and downs.

"Of course, if you didn't protect Misaka, you'd feel guilty about breaking her arm, right? Ah, what if Misaka had lost an arm to an explosion, or a leg? Or even her head had been blown to itty bitty pieces. You'd feel pretty guilty about that right? Mr. Honor Student."

Worst wore a rather pleased-looking expression, obviously having fun at Accelerator's expense. Clinging onto his arm, she sneered up at him.

L3TgeWY.png

"Besides, it's all your fault for leaving MIsaka alone. Was that blondie really so important you ditched Misaka?" She couldn't help but catch that her tone felt a bit more dejected than she'd have liked.

"If there's anything I wouldn't feel sorry for, it'd be if he blew off your damn mouth at the very least," the Number One grunted abrasively as he tended to, before letting out a small breath as Worst would attach herself to his arm. She really did like to do that, huh? If she was so motivated by her wish to cause him as much inconvenience and suffering as possible, then was this part of it too? Accelerator sometimes wondered if he simply only believed himself to dislike the close contact because he assumed Worst wanted him to dislike it. Funny how emotions worked like that.

Yet... Now that he thought over it, it was an odd sensation. Being touched at all. Usually, more often before he'd gotten shot in the head, just about nothing touched Accelerator. No person was able to lay a hand on him, no force could influence his existence in any way unless he allowed it to, like he did gravity. Nowadays, everyone was getting their grubby hands on him. Yomikawa giving him unwarranted noogies, Last Order giving him random hugs, and of course, Worst latching onto him like they were boyfriend and...

...

Well, anyway.

"Well, if you're not actually that hurt, then that means that you can at least take care of yourself a little, right?" Accelerator initially replied to Worst's later remark. Thinking back, perhaps it wasn't the best course of action to leave Worst by herself, but he didn't want her to get in on his business with Tsuchimikado and GROUP, if that even still existed. Of course, it was a moot point now, since Worst ended up getting involved anyway.

Though he was a little loath to admit, people were indeed capable of taking care of themselves, but considering that he was "the strongest" around, he couldn't help but worry a little, though of course, like with many other things, he'd never admit it. People may be capable of protecting themselves, but Accelerator was simply able to protect them more, or so he believed. And considering this situation... He wasn't sure what would have happened if he hadn't caused Kira to escape, nor did he really care to find out if the chance arrived.

th_toaru24.png

Whether out of sensibility on the matter at the given moment, or Worst accidentally came on stronger than intended, Accelerator indeed caught on to the tone that the girl took, furrowing his brow for a moment as he pondered what to say, how to feel. Could she be just playing dirty for the sake of it again? In any other situation, perhaps, but here and now, there was just something about her that made him want to...

"But... Yeah, I guess it is my fault," Accelerator suddenly said in an uncharacteristic fashion, speaking in a not-sarcastic or caustic manner to Worst for once, continuing to walk with her as he'd let out a sigh. The white-haired boy averted his gaze, a little embarrassed for whatever reason, feeling almost like he really did do something mean to a helpless girl. Something akin to what a normal high school boy would feel.

"... I suppose I should have brought you along, since you ended up being involved in all this business anyway, huh? Then, I guess... Sorry."

Worst stopped for a second, like a deer in the headlights. He apologized? It simultaneously made her want to make a mocking laugh and cling to him tighter. But why the hell would she want to do the latter? She was just messing with him after all. She should just sneer and jeer him for that weak softness he was showing.

...

But she just didn't feel like it. She'd make sure to laugh up a storm next time though, dammit.

"Yeah, it's your fault. Don't leave Misaka alone, or next time she might just let herself get blown up." Despite her best efforts to make it sound like normal teasing he might have expected from her, it ended up coming out more like a child complaining.

Continuing to walk along with him, her grip around his arm seemed to tighten a bit, unable to turn her gaze to meet his. Not that he was looking at her, but thanks to the direction she turned her own gaze it wasn't like she knew that.

Gah, why wasn't he berating her, or trying to shake her off, or even just do something ridiculous like threaten to throw her off with the strongest powers in Academy City? She could almost feel the steam emitting from her head at this strange situation that didn't suit either of them.

th_toaru4.png

"Swear on my life. I'll take full responsibility for you," Accelerator continued to speak nonchalantly. Some might consider it difficult to tell whether he was simply too tired to put up any sort of fight, or if there was just something different about the situation that made him act as such, though... One could spend some time thinking about it, couldn't they?

Not seeming to take note of the internal struggle that Worst seemed to be going through (though he seemed to have a small idea at the very least, given how tightly she was holding on to him now), or maybe not caring that much, the Number One silently continued to walk with her, gripping the strange "multiversal transportation device" as Tsuchimikado roughly described it in his other hand, the scene was almost one that the Esper could describe as peaceful. Ideal, even. A serene situation that a part of him wanted to last forever. Just... tranquil all around. That's all he ever wanted, wasn't it?

All Accelerator wanted now was to just live a quiet life.

And though this life was certainly far from quiet, he would never stop reaching out to grasp and secure a quiet life, not just for himself, but for everyone around him. Yomikawa, Yoshikawa, Last Order... and of course, Worst herself. They were all... family, after all.

As the two continued to walk, quickly making their way out of the alley and back on the streets, there was noticeably less people around than before, and those who were in the two's lines of sight almost seemed like they were... heading home. Of course, it was hard to blame them. Judging from the clouds above in the sky, rain was imminent, and it didn't exactly look light. For all the advanced technologies that Academy City had access to, it seemed that sometimes, even it could not predict Mother Nature fully, given how earlier today it was warm enough that ice cream seemed like a viable option, and how Yomikawa--

Drip.

"!"

Suddenly, Accelerator abruptly stopped dead in his tracks, blinking in surprise. However, it wasn't any life-threatening force, no evil Esper, magician, or even Kira around the corner that surprised him. It was... but just a drop of rain that had landed on his nose. That was the thing that made him softly grunt, as though it had been a while since he let rain touch him, despite in reality it only being somewhere around one month, though it was during the 0930 Incident, a time where Accelerator had other things on his mind than the rainfall.

Shortly following the one drop, another drop of rain would land on top of Worst's head, and then another on Accelerator's head, and then another, and another. Slowly, but steadily, more and more drops of rain began to fall down until it was evident that it wasn't lightening up any time soon. Just as Worst's grip on Accelerator tightened before, Accelerator seemed to ever so gently pull her closer to him until they practically couldn't get any closer, before he'd begin to take another step.

"... We'd better find some place to lay low. Come on."

Usually, something like rain would hardly be something anyone would assume gave the legendary Accelerator pause, but alas, things changed with the times, though there was more to the story than just that kind of explanation.

Something burned inside Worst's chest. It wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't unpleasant. A good word for it would have been...annoying? Something she'd rather do without, yet couldn't. She was uncharacteristically quiet as they walked, for once seeming to have nothing to say in response.

Misaka doesn't care about him, right? So why...?

As the rain started to pour down on them, Worst looked up into the cloudy sky. The weather certainly was fickle. But whatever, it wasn't any of their business. What was a bit of rainfall compared to the battlefield of World War III itself after all? Expecting to just continue on walking, Worst took a step forward.

Only to get pulled back by Accelerator.

After a brief pause with an almost puzzled expression, Worst smirked at the Number One.

"Ara, the Accelerator is scared of the rain? If it's too cold for you, Misaka will warm you up~" she teased him, not fighting against his grip.

UL7gSG2.png

"Save it. You'll probably need your heat more than me," Accelerator sighed, almost intending for it to be some witty comeback or so, though it really seemed to end up sounding like he was trying to look out for her. Tch. A lot of miscommunication happening between the two of them, right?

Or rather, was it...

With Worst still clinging onto him, the Esper walked forward in a slightly more hurried speed, though not by too much. Certainly, if he wanted to, he could have simply set his Redirection so that the rain simply didn't affect him, as well as the cold while he was at it, but he wouldn't want to waste his collar battery on that. And besides... He didn't really feel like accidentally pushing Worst off him by just turning on his collar, and then having to adjust the setting so that the Redirection wouldn't affect her. After all, everything he did and didn't do elicited some snide comment from the Sister, even now... So he wondered, what made her so suddenly quiet in this place, here and now?

Of course, if he had time to think about all that, he had time to get them both somewhere dry. As he led her around the suddenly deserted Academy City, the place almost looking like some sort of ghost town if that were even possible, especially with the ever graying sky, Accelerator would catch sight of a course of action that seemed ideal.

"Over here."

Tugging Worst over to the far side of the sidewalk, the white-haired teen would guide her down a small flight of stairs that would have led into a restaurant, though upon a quick glance if it wasn't noticed before, the place was closed. The true reason Accelerator had led her here was because of a cover over the door that protected them from the rain, though it was so small that in order to truly be protected completely, they'd have to sit down against the door and tuck in their legs, which the young man did, evidently a bit worn out from standing, walking, and throwing a trash can. There was a reason why he looked scrawny as he did, after all.

It was an awkward display. They practically looked like homeless children like this. A notion that Accelerator was aware of, but didn't seem to do much about. It wasn't like there were people around to take note anyway. Besides, this place was as good as any a spot to stake out and wait for Kira, though to be honest, that man wasn't exactly high on Accelerator's priority list right now, though he knew he'd have to get the blasted device in his hands back to Tsuchimikado when he was done with it.

But for now, he simply took a breath and sat down beside Worst, though didn't force her to sit down with him. Just in case she'd prefer to... stand.

"... For the record, rain doesn't scare me."

Worst went along with him as he took her to find cover from the rain. Even though she'd teased him about being scared of it, it wasn't like she particularly enjoyed the feel of rain on her anyway. In fact, she could probably get sick if she just stood in it all day. Tempting as it was to get herself sick, the clone eventually decided to take a seat next to the scrawny strongest, pulling her legs in and hugging her arms around them.

Hm, if she looked at the place in a strategical sense, it didn't look like the best place to be hiding. The one that wanted to kill them used explosives, and being cooped up in a small place like this was the exact kind of space that favored explosions. She doubted she'd be able to mount any sort of practical defense if she was caught off guard here.

But then, that only applied to most people. With a press of a button, no amount of explosions would so much as dirty Accelerator's clothes. So really, it didn't matter where they hid. In fact, it wasn't so bad. Letting her head rest on his shoulder, she began to cackle as he finally denied her accusation.

"Is that so? Misaka thought it would be very interesting if the strongest in Academy City was scared of something mundane like rain. Then Misaka could share it with the rest of the Misaka Network, and she could laugh at you with the little one."

With just the two of them sitting under cover from the rain, it probably seemed like a rather peaceful scene. The kind of scene that certainly didn't fit either of them. But this time, Worst wouldn't complain. It was disgustingly ill-fitting, but she couldn't quite say it was unpleasant.

The Misaka Network carried some strange desires, she figured.

rZ3jGJA.png

"..."

Accelerator let out a small sigh when Worst would help herself to his shoulder, not seeming to react too much to her intimate move, though... He couldn't deny that he felt... nothing. But he couldn't even begin to understand what it was. For all the intelligence within his head, sometimes, the young man felt like a complete nincompoop when it came to knowledge on more... "human" matters. For every mathematical equation that he could perform in his head, there was something in the heart that he couldn't even begin to really describe, no matter how hard he'd try to read it like data from a textbook.

Was this emotion what they called...?

--Of course, his train of thought would be effectively interrupted, if not derailed, when Worst would start talking again, though to be fair, it was in response to what he'd said earlier.

"Tch. Always trying to bedevil me... You really will try to dig up any excuse to get back at me or whatever, huh?"

Despite his usual grumpy tone, there was something... lighter about their banter than before. Of course, on the surface, Worst was the same as ever, and so was he, right? Then why did something about this situation feel different? Two powerful individuals alone together, practically isolated from the world in a few ways, hiding under the rain.

Of course, Accelerator was loath to romanticize the thought of sitting alone with the outlet of the Misaka Network's negative emotions given physical form. After everything he'd done in the past, there was likely plenty of resentment and malice hidden in the backs of the heads of the surviving Sisters. They can say that everything's okay, that amends were made, considering his regret on the matter, but... It was up to the Network.

It was like dealing with real humans.

A thought plopped into the Esper's head as he thought about this, and after a brief moment of silence, he'd speak up again. "Hey... Tell me, Worst. If you're the outlet of all the Network's negative emotions, their ill will towards me, then... What would happen to you if the Network had miraculously decided to whole-heartedly forgive me and cease to hold any sort of resentment towards me? What would happen to you if... there weren't any negative emotions to let out?" Accelerator inquired. It was a sudden, strange question, but it was the one on his mind.

He was not under any delusion that that was a realistic scenario by a mile, but... He couldn't help but wonder. For all the intellect stored in his head, or at least all that remained after the incident with Ao Amai, there were things unknown to even him. This one thing, he felt the need to know for some odd reason...

"Hnnn, if there were no negative emotions?"

Worst was a collection of all the malice in the Misaka Network. All the things that those other clones could never express. That was her reason for existence, what made her herself. The negative emotions of the Misaka Network gave her substance. It was as substantial to her existence as her own cloned flesh and blood. A strangely nervous chuckle escaped her.

"This Misaka unit's existence would be completely, absolutely denied. Hm..." She raised a finger to her chin, as if in deep thought, before continuing. "Misaka would just be a living corpse, right? Her value without the network's malice is z-e-r-o. Kuku, are you that desperate to get rid of Misaka?"

The Sister continued to tease Accelerator as usual, but with a tone that could almost be confused for being dejected. Confused because that wasn't her tone at all, naturally.

But still, she was fully aware of what the source of the resentment in the network was. Killing over 10,000 of them, who wouldn't hold on to at least a little malice there? But the only way they could express it was through Worst. All 9,000 remaining clones had to funnel all of their loathing and desire for revenge through one Misaka unit.

Though considering how many clones there were, Worst's behavior could almost be called mild in comparison to what one would expect from the hatred of thousands poured into one girl.

"..."

For a rather good moment, Accelerator remained silent after Worst would finish talking, not even responding to her so-called joke about him wanting her gone. Without blinking, the white-haired teen seemed to almost stare aimlessly at the rain in front of the two of them, as though he were in deep thought. So... For her to continue existing, it was necessary for the Network to hold at least an iota of malice for him, huh? On one hand, it was strangely comforting in a sense knowing that what she needed to keep going on wasn't exactly in short supply at the moment, but on the other... Accelerator felt something odd within him when he processed the realization that her life was tied to something in this manner at all. In a sense, it was only now that it seemed to hit him how possibly fragile her life was, even compared to a normal human being. What was this feeling though? Could it possibly be...

... Fear?

Accelerator let out a soft breath after a while, whether at his own thoughts or as a delayed response to Worst's words, closing his eyes for a brief moment. It was almost eerie how he'd been silent, though eventually, after formulating a response in his head, he spoke again.

th_toaru23.png

"So then, no matter what, you'll always be the outlet of malice towards me. There's never gonna be any changing that, huh?" He inquired, continuing to avert his gaze from Worst for whatever reason, "I suppose it can't be helped. That's just... how it is."

One could almost detect a faint hint of contrition within his voice as he spoke, as though... He regretted knowing that. A twinge of sorrow that was usually uncharacteristic of the Number One. Perhaps in the deeper depths of his mind, he would have liked to work his ass off to make up for the sins of his past, but... Some things were just plain unforgivable in the eyes of some. One person may forgive him, but two more may not. That was the truth that he had accepted.

"... That's fine though. I made a promise anyway. No matter what would happen, come what may, I'll do everything in my power to protect you and the others, and it's not so that I can just be forgiven for the things I did. It's because... I was given something good that I don't deserve. Something too good for me. But... A lot of people died because of me. I'm not letting that happen to the few people I don't want to die. And that includes..."

Accelerator gave pause for a moment, glancing at Worst for a hot second, before looking away again. He said too much. It was funny. He used to not even think of the Sisters as "people," but almost more like robots. Nowadays, while loath to admit it outwardly, perhaps deep down, there was something about that damned Level 0 who beat him, armed only with an ability-negating right hand and an indomitable will, that reached Accelerator.

...

"Don't tell anyone I said that, or you're dead, by the way."

Back on topic, Accelerator didn't realize how embarrassing and unlike him those words were until after he said them.

You.

That was how that sentence was going to finish, wasn't it? Such sickeningly sweet words didn't suit one whose hands had been dipped so far into darkness, so covered in blood. It was a laughable contrast, the one who'd prided himself so on being a first-class villain speaking like some kind of hero, a protector of justice.

This apparent contradiction was shocking enough to pull an expressionless, blank look onto Worst's face. Her train of thought had been delayed by those unexpected, uncharacteristic words, requiring a bit of time before it could leave the station. But once it finally did, a brief laugh escaped her as she raised her head from his shoulder.

"Hyaha..."

Her cackle seemed to lack its usual vitriol, but it was nonetheless a mocking laugh.

"What the heck is that? How is Misaka supposed to hate such a meek expression, such words like that?! You want to protect something good? You want to protect Misaka, who was created specifically to spite and combat you? Misaka's existence really is going to be denied with something like that!"

Though she said such things while laughing, it was a little less hysterical than the mockery Accelerator might have been used to. Perhaps despite that body being specifically designed for the battlefield, even a clone couldn't completely hide its fatigue. After all, there was no other reason such a collection of malice would use such a great chance to jeer Accelerator's mushy words so halfheartedly. So relatively softly. There was certainly, absolutely no other reason for that.

It took her a little while, but soon even she calmed down a bit, her head drifting back down onto Accelerator. She'd come far since the snowy plains of Russia. Being able to be in such intimate contact with someone despite being so full of negativity was proof of that much at least. But she liked to believe she hadn't changed all that much. She just did what she thought was interesting, or what would be more spiteful. That and nothing else. What kind of crazy person would want to protect a mass-produced machine of hatred like her anyway? Well, this guy, Academy City's strongest, apparently. Damn it, making her think about things like this. She was never tuned for this.

As Accelerator threatened her, the Sister looked up at him with a spiteful smirk. It was more familiar ground for someone like her.

"Hoh, scary, scary. Are you going to break Misaka apart limb by limb, or maybe use your vectors to obliterate her all at once? Or something even worse? What would you do if Misaka told the whole network this?" Such suggestions were given casually, as though they were the first thing to pop into her mind. Descriptions of her or other Sisters being brutalized tended to rub the strongest the wrong way, and as the network's outlet for negative emotions she intuitively understood that. As well as, of course, his desire to keep those uncharacteristic words private.

Which was why she found it strange when she continued on.

"Whatever it is, Misaka's life is in your hands. So treat her however you want, keh heh heh..."

1ttqxm4.png

"If me being like that will deny the nature of your existence, then... Maybe it's time you found something else to live for. It's what you make of it after all, and the only thing stopping you from changing anything is yourself," Accelerator said in a surprisingly profound manner in response to Worst's first remark.

It was advice that the young man had given from experience. He used to be like that too, once upon a time. To once live with singular, firm beliefs and goals. Once upon a time, all he'd cared about was being the strongest, and then getting even stronger than that, to the point where even the thought of challenging him would be considered a bad joke. But it turned out that, as perhaps most youths were, he was a fickle one. Once he had found something he wanted to protect, he despaired. He feared that, as one who was once a villain, he would always be a villain, and thus, he did not deserve to care for someone.

Of course, from time to time, he still thought this, but whenever he'd see the smile of Last Order or anyone else within the household, those worries seemed to fade away. Now, he didn't care if he'd be labeled as a "hero" or a "villain" by others. All that mattered was that at the end of the day, rather than being "the strongest," he'd just at least be strong enough to protect those before him.

In a manner, it was almost like he and Worst were more alike than they realized.

Of course, the moment was ruined when Worst would tease Accelerator by making him picture ways of how he'd end up killing her, but once again, that was probably his own fault. What a pain.

Still, her last few words struck him as somewhat odd. It was strange that she'd say that with as much comfort as could be heard, though then again, Accelerator was not exactly in any position to say that someone was acting strange, was he? In any case, he'd simply give Worst a silent nod in response, letting her continue to rest her head on his shoulder. He let the two of them continue to remain there for a while.

It felt odd, being in this position. Back in the heyday, the very thought of "hiding" was inconceivable to Accelerator. Considering all the power he held, the idea of hiding was one that was never an option to him. No, he fought. He never shied away from any sort of adversary that would come his way. And yet... It felt odd, yet comforting. It was like the two of them were hiding from the rain, from the rest of the world, and perhaps even from themselves to a degree. A place where nobody could find them. A space where they voluntarily trapped themselves. It was suffocating, but also made him feel secure. Of course, feeling "secure" made him feel "insecure," considering he had never put much thought into his own security before, physical or mental.

Still, no matter how many times he'd call it "odd," he couldn't exactly deny the strange sense of security he felt, being this close to someone. Thoughtlessly (a rare occasion for someone like Accelerator), his hand drifted over to Worst's, his fingers barely meeting hers, and then--

Tap tap tap tap.

"!"

With a soft, yet alarmed breath, Accelerator stood up, pulling away from Worst abruptly with eyes wide in alert. The sound of footsteps could be heard in the distance, despite the rainfall which had gotten heavier during the time they sat.

The Number One stood at the very bottom of the steps in order to stay out of sight, but as the footsteps gradually got closer and closer, before eventually just beginning to get further and further, as though they'd just passed the two of them, Accelerator slowly made his way up the steps, leaving behind the world-transporting device to take a peek, a finger raised up to his collar, as though expecting Kira above. However, he stopped dead in his tracks when a familiar voice was heard in the distance.

"Ahhh... Just my luck! For Accelerator and Worst to get lost on the day that no one expected would rain...! Where could they be...?!"

It was none other than Yomikawa, evidently having decided to look for her two wards, leaving Yoshikawa with Last Order back at the apartment home presumably. Upon hearing the woman's voice, Accelerator remained as still as a statue, as though unsure of what to even do, even looking back at Worst as though looking for guidance on what would be the best course of action.

Something else? Ridiculous. Foolish talk. She wasn't like a normal human, one birthed through her mother's womb. Purpose was something built into her. Like how the purpose of a hammer was to drive in nails, hers was to let the negative emotions of the Network loose. She had been designed to combat Accelerator, so the complete opposite of that, being protected by him, simply stepped all over her that.

Though, if that was the case, why had she felt relieved when he'd saved her just a little while ago? If, like she said, her existence would be denied by his desire to protect her, then shouldn't that have already been so?

Actually, thinking about it, a hammer certainly was designed to for construction, but that hardly stopped anyone from using it otherwise. As a blunt weapon, to hit things back into shape, a normal hammer could be used for things it hadn't necessarily been designed for. It was all in how one used it. The obvious question, then, was did that apply to her too? Actually, simply living this far was more than she'd expected. That alone exceeded her reason for existence.

Then it wasn't impossible, was it? To look at it differently, to change just what it was she lived fo-

Accelerator's sudden movement stopped her train of thought, Worst calmly standing up as well. It didn't take long for her to notice the footsteps as well. Had Kira sniffed them out, or was it just a random passerby also trying to find cover from the rain? She began to reach for an iron nail, playing with it in her fingers as they ascended the stairs. Though it was fun to toy with lesser opponents, Kira had proved that, at least against her, she couldn't afford to take him too lightly. She'd blast him on the spot, and if Accelerator gave her a lecture about it then she'd just hear it out.

But when she heard the voice, all of that became unnecessary. Instead, an entirely different problem made itself known. Quickly hiding the nail, Worst returned Accelerator's stare. Only rather than asking for guidance, her face only spelled trouble.

"Should we say that you and Misaka needed some private time together~?"

For some reason she responded in such an unhelpful manner.

D16kh4n.png

"I don't know why I bothered looking to you for guidance," Accelerator grunted irritably at Worst, looking back at Yomikawa, who was evidently still unaware of the other presences nearby. The teen debated on whether or not he should make himself known to her for a good moment, going through all the pros and cons of it, before eventually settling to simply leave her be for now. If he made himself known to her now, if only just to tell her to get out, considering the danger that Kira was still able to present, she would surely refuse. Considering she was part of Anti-Skill, her job generally consisted of purposefully running towards danger, so coaxing her into leaving with that kind of reasoning was out of the question.

So for the time being, Accelerator stayed put, deciding to let Yomikawa continue her search until the two of them had dealt with Kira. Speaking of which, where even was he? Damn that Tsuchimikado, letting him and Worst do all the work just because he didn't feel like carrying that damn device! Academy City was a real big place, after all, so what, did he expect the two of them to search the entirety of--

Thump.

"W-Wah?!"

Just as Yomikawa was about to walk round the corner, and by extension out of the Number One's line of sight, she would proceed to bump into a figure who had been coming from the same direction, the woman nearly lost her balance, though before she could fall, the figure's hand grabbed her wrist, preventing her from falling. Yomikawa let out a relieved sigh, calming down, before looking up at the figure.

"Ah, sorry 'bout that! I wasn't looking at where I was going," she said with a sheepish laugh, rubbing the back of her head with her other hand, while her wrist was still being held by the man. Yomikawa found this odd, though she didn't say anything on it, simply pulling away with a slight tug.

"It's... fine," the figure said, looking down at Yomikawa, not getting out of her way as he continued to stand there. With the unmistakable blonde hair and purple suit, the man couldn't be anyone other than Yoshikage Kira.

"Mhm. Anyway, I've got someplace to be, though... Before I get out of your way, stranger, have you seen a pale, almost sickly and angry looking boy and a cute but needlessly mischievous girl on his arm by any chance?" She inquired, no doubt referring to Accelerator and Worst themselves. While in any other situation, Accelerator would have irritably grunted at their descriptions, here and now, he was seething, though not at Yomikawa, but rather, at Kira, as though growing angry at him before he could even get the chance to hurt her.

Kira looked at her blankly, and if Worst were also observing, she would also be able to see the cat-like "shape," or at least little more than its general shape, looming over next to him, presumably ready to make a move. Eventually, he made his reply, his gaze harder than it was before. "No... No, I... Actually, come to think of it, I think I saw some kids like that at the Market when I was there earlier," he said in a voice that was almost sickeningly forcibly mild-mannered, "You're... acquainted with them?"

"Ah, yeah, they're my... wards, I suppose you could say," the woman replied, attempting to protect herself from the rain with her hand, while Kira continued to simply stand there with his hands at his side, "They may be sharp kids, but they're still just kids, and God knows what they'd do without me," she said, letting out a light laugh.

With that, the aura only got stronger from Kira, as the figure, completely invisible to Accelerator, began to raise its arm. This was a tense moment for Accelerator. He would rather have waited until after Kira left in order to dispatch with him, but he would also rather not risk him hurting her because he'd waited too long to act. It was likely all up to Worst to make a choice on whether to act immediately or also try to wait it out and see what would happen from there.

This was not good, to say the least. Kira could hold the woman as a hostage and Accelerator, for all of his power, would be utterly helpless against the killer. Even Reflection would be useless, since sending an explosion back would almost certainly result in Yomikawa's untimely death.

But Worst wasn't the type to take action without being told to. If Accelerator didn't feel like doing anything, she hardly felt inclined to do something herself. Her own life wasn't being threatened at all here, really. And actually, if she thought about it realistically, this would be an advantage to her. If he thought he was safe with a hostage, she could simply drive a nail through both of them while he didn't expect it. That method of defense only worked on the naive ones after all, the kind of people the public would call heroes.

Besides, surely the PE teacher would move when she saw that cat-like figure, right? If that wasn't an obvious threat, Anti-Skill must have been even more naive than she'd figured them for. ...C'mon, do something already. Don't just laugh with your hands dangling by your side.

Well at least Accelerator wouldn't be so stupid, right?

...

Apparently not. To the Sister's surprise, even Accelerator just watched as the cat-like figure loomed beside him. Strangely, she felt something like disappointment, or irritation, or a mix of both. He considered them family, if what he said earlier was true, so why was he just remaining a spectator? Wasn't it obvious Kira was about to make a move?

Whatever then. Looked like it was up to her. It was a good chance to make a surprise attack at least. Redrawing the nail she'd just withdrawn, blue electricity began to crackle from her hand.

And without asking any questions, she fired the 2 centimeter nail from her hand, aiming for a shot at his chest. If she could distract him for a second, maybe Accelerator would finally move.

"?!"

Letting out a slight, though still uncharacteristic, gasp, as though Worst's movements snapped him out of what appeared to be some angry trance, Accelerator's eyes widened. As the nail launched by Worst flew straight towards Kira, the man who seemed to be completely unaware of the two Espers' presence at the moment, it perhaps might have come as a complete surprise when, in the miniscule amount of time that it took for the nail to travel towards Kira, the figure swiftly moved in front of him, raising its arms in a cross fashion, as if to block the nail.

From the sheer force of the impact when it came into contact with the figure, Kira's physical body suddenly slid back a few feet, and from Yomikawa's point of view, it was as though an invisible force from behind had pulled him back, prompting the woman to form a quizzical expression on her face.

"Eh? S-Sir, are you...?"

"Yomikawa, back off from him! Now!"

Very rarely did Accelerator ever sound as urgent and serious as he did then. Taking the opportunity that Worst had provided for him, the Number One leapt forward, choker already having activated his powers, and slammed his fist into the ground, the punch causing a mighty shockwave that produced a small fault line that traveled straight towards Kira. Profoundly confused, though letting her instincts act in place of meticulousness, the woman did as her ward commanded, if for no other reason than to dodge the fault coming her way, considering her relative proximity to Kira. Stumbling away from the blonde man and towards the direction of Accelerator, who angrily walked past her, gripping his crutch firmly, had his sights set on Kira. He hadn't felt anger like this in a while. He was reminded of the battle royale of Academy City, when one Teitoku Kakine had dared to place harm upon Yomikawa, and paid the price for it. Surely, the Esper would have loved to extend the same treatment to the blonde man, but...

"A-Accelerator?! What's... What are you--?!"

"Shut up! This asshole is bad news, so if you don't mind, go fetch that device back there from Worst. I'll explain later..."

"I don't really get what's going on... but you better! The two of you just might be in biiig trouble if I don't come to hear something I like!" The woman exclaimed, even during a time like now choosing to act like the teens' mother figure. Still, eventually doing as told, Yomikawa jogged over towards Worst, looking over at her, "So if he won't tell me, then I suppose that you wouldn't feel inclined to fill me in on what's going on? And what device is he talking about?!"

"Again, huh?"

Worst would be lying if she said she expected the nail to take him down, but it was still annoying to have her attacked so easily defended against like that. But whatever, fighting him wasn't her job anymore. She could leave that to Accelerator. Besides, the #1 had a scary look in his eyes. One that reminded her of when she'd driven him too far and he'd gone berserk. For once, she didn't plan to mess with him. The Sister surprisingly obediently began to dig around her ao dai for the device, eventually finding it and holding it out to Yomikawa.

"Misaka is fine with leaving stuff like explaining to him," she shrugged as Yomikawa began to interrogate her. "And Misaka doesn't really know herself. Let's see, what was it that blonde guy said? Oh, of course. It's...a thing."

With a mischievous look that hardly fit the situation, Worst didn't exactly give a helpful explanation. Though it probably couldn't be helped, since she knew little to nothing about it herself anyway.

"A thing? Well, of course it's a thing! But what kind of thing?!" Yomikawa exclaimed, not seeming to let up and practically forgetting to take the device given to her from Worst, her eyes focused on the girl rather than whatever she held in her hand.

whats_the_worst_that_could_happen__by_rottac-d4jvr2e.jpg

"Who knows?" Worst only shrugged as Yomikawa continued her interrogation. She knew they'd said something about returning Kira to his world or whatever, but honestly she had no idea exactly what that entailed. So instead of an explanation that she herself wouldn't understand, the Sister simply continued to push the strange thing towards Yomikawa with her usual smirk on her face.

As Accelerator made his way towards Kira like a murderer heading for his prey, ironic given his target, the blonde man's expression was initially a surprised one, stepping back as though intimidated by Accelerator's approach. Usually, Kira didn't find himself the one feeling the need to escape, but this boy... There was something about him. Something about his power that made sure to protect him from whatever Kira would be able to throw at him.

However.

Just because he couldn't hurt him didn't mean he couldn't halt him.

With his expression quickly shifting to a stronger, more resolved one, Yoshikage Kira stopped in his tracks and stood steadfast, almost as if intending to stare Accelerator down. The Number One didn't show any sign of slowing down, fully intending on--

"Stop right there. Or you'll regret it, boy," Kira said with a stronger tone than before. It was not a plea that he had said, not a request, but rather, a demand. Authoritative, truly like an adult to a child. Of course, with someone as powerful as Accelerator, it had little effect, though it had at least prompted a response.

"Oh, yeah? And just what the fuck do you think you're gonna do?"

tumblr_oc6m5xY76d1td5qjgo1_540.gif

"I'll blow up that woman to smithereens."

"W-Wait, whoa, whoa, what?!" Yomikawa exclaimed, able to still hear Kira from where she and Worst were.

Possibly more from the tone taken rather than the threat itself, as Accelerator was no stranger to useless bluffs, the Number One suddenly stopped, giving Kira a deadlier glare than even before, practically emanating an aura of pure murderous intent towards the man.

With a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips, Kira proceeded to raise a finger, suddenly boasting a more openly confident mien than ever before, practically mockingly wagging his finger at Accelerator. "It happened when I'd bumped into her, you see. I just couldn't resist taking a hold of her soft hands for just a second, and my Killer Queen the same. And... Well, before I knew it, it looked like I accidentally made her a bomb."

As soon as Kira uttered the phrase "Killer Queen," the same shadow that always accompanied Kira, once barely visible to Worst, seemed to exert an even stronger aura than before, the Electromaster now able to make out the cat ears more visibly, and glowing red eyes. A true "villain," as the Accelerator of old would have classified him, in every aspect.

"So if you take another step, I'll kill her. Same goes for your friend as well," the man threatened, diverting his attention to Worst for a hot second, before back to Accelerator, just to make sure that he wouldn't try anything funny. "What's that little thing you wanted to get from your friend anyway? Hmph. Looks like an oversized camera. Goodness, in this day and age where those small, comfortable in your palm digital cameras were getting more and more popular..." Kira spoke nonchalantly, pointing in the direction of the two females, almost seeming to go off on some random tangent as he adjusted his skull-patterned tie in his hands.

th_toaru14.png

"... Tch."

Accelerator, in perhaps a surprising move, could only look away from Kira, and towards Yomikawa and Worst, not even taking note of the strange comment he'd made about digital cameras being "new" or something. There wasn't any physical evidence that there was any sort of bomb on the woman's form, though despite the invulnerability that Accelerator enjoyed for practically all his time in Academy City, he still knew when there were risks that weren't in his favor.

Without even uttering another word, all the Number One could do was stand at bay. To feel helpless like this... This was an annoying feeling. One that he'd been feeling a little too often ever since coming into contact with that brat... and other people to care for. Unconsciously channeling that helplessness, the boy simply looked vulnerably at Yomikawa, then at Worst, and the device that had yet to be given away.

A single contraption of a button. Indeed, almost like a strangely shaped camera. But one had to wonder if from here, Worst would be able to make the gambit that Accelerator would not be able to...

As Kira announced the threat he held over them, even she couldn't help but let a more serious expression appear. Though his power was no use against Accelerator, his power only applied to himself. He was the one safe from damage. If Yomikawa exploded, she was done. And given her position here, Worst wasn't likely going to get out all well either. There was no way even the strongest esper was going to take this risk.

"Ah, what an annoying situation, hm?" Worst merely said.

Her gaze shifted to meet Accelerator's. Damn, what kind of look was that? Don't look at Misaka like some kind of helpless child.

Worst's eyes moved down to the nail that Kira had deflected with what she could clearly see now was some kind of pink, cat humanoid. What an aura. Though that blonde kid had said he didn't belong in this world, she couldn't help but feel like he was definitely a man who would be on the dark side of the city.

Regardless of all that though, she didn't have to be touching the nail to manipulate it. She couldn't do her makeshift Railgun with it from this distance, but no matter how strong the esper's ability was, his body was only that of a normal human's. So if she caught him off guard, one strike from the nail in the right place just might put him down. Or, at the very least, give Accelerator enough time to touch him and reverse his bloodflow, or whatever he wanted to do.

But defeating him wasn't the problem here. It was doing it fast enough that Kira couldn't pull the invisible trigger and turn Yomikawa into flying chunks of meat. If they moved and failed, the woman who acted as their guardian would be no more. But if they just didn't move, there was no doubt he'd simply kill them all anyway. Even Accelerator wouldn't be able to do anything if Kira said to put down his Reflection, else Yomikawa be turned into scrap meat. No doubt the current Accelerator would obediently do so, even knowing it would only result in his death.

Like hell Worst was just going to stand around and wait for his death.

Using her ability to manipulate electricity, the nail slowly began to move. Though it was crushed, if propelled at a decent speed even a small piece of metal could knock him off guard. When someone was pressured and attacked, their first instinct would be to protect themselves, not attack someone else.

...Hopefully.

Electricity began to crackle from the nail as it sprung out from the ground, the crumpled piece of metal flying out as though fired by a gun. It was no longer sharp, and the nail was only two centimeters long to begin with. But even a nine millimeter bullet could kill. Aiming to strike his jaw and even barrel through his skull, the nail soared towards its target.

If it worked, either she or Accelerator could follow up before he could pull his trigger, and then do whatever it was they were to do with this strange device she held in her hand.

If not, well...

She'd take all the blame for it.

"!"

KSSH!

Like before, Kira's mysterious shadow-like aura was able to just barely deflect the nail coming at him, though he had been taken even more off-guard than before, considering he had believed himself to be in the end-all win-win situation. Confidence was something Yoshikage Kira rarely felt, but he couldn't help but drown in glee whenever he managed to claw his way to the ideal quiet situation that he so desired. He'd become so gleeful that that became the only thing he could think of, and though he often wondered if that kind of trait would be his downfall, now was hardly such a moment to think of such things.

"G-Gnghhh!"

However, unlike before, the figure that Kira had previously called "Killer Queen" wasn't exactly fast enough, as the nail had flown higher than expected, but the end result was that the nail ended up burrowing through the humanoid cat's finger and into one side of the man's cheek, though the finger had managed to interfere with the momentum of the nail enough that it was just barely unable to fly through the other side, crudely landing inside Kira's mouth.

Before he could even think to spit out the nail, let alone detonate Yomikawa, Accelerator stomped his foot into the ground, using his power to create a shockwave that not only created a fault line running towards Kira, sending him off-balance, but also sent a number of rocks and debris heading his way. From there, using the momentum, Accelerator proceeded to leap, but not towards Kira. Rather, backwards straight towards Worst! Wordlessly, skidding just next to her, he took her hands and aimed the device straight at Kira, distracted by the combined efforts of the two Espers.

XzaEjm8.png

"Disappear already, motherfucker!"

With a spiteful yell, Accelerator wasted no time in pressing the button on the device in Worst's hands, the mechanism quickly glowing and emitting a blinding red laser that flew right at Kira surpassing the speed of light, faster than everyone around could possibly comprehend. With a resounding, pained yell from Kira, the beam hit him like an extending pole, and from there, a blinding light engulfed the area until it eventually subsided, and before anyone knew it, Kira was nowhere to be seen, the only trace left of him evidently being a single shred of his purple shirt, torn from the rest of it. Any outsider would think that he was completely vaporized, though with all that Tsuchimikado had said, if he had managed to be returned to whatever place he came from, then that was good enough for Accelerator. He could only hope that wherever he went, it was at a place where Kira's power no longer had any effect on Yomikawa, and considering how much time had passed since he disappeared, perhaps that was so.

The Esper let out a tired sigh, the kind that he didn't often let out, and before either him or Worst knew it, Yomikawa pulled the two of them together into a big hug, her arms wrapped around the back of their necks as her warmth almost seemed to protect them from the rain around, the rain that Accelerator had forgotten about.

"Jeez... You two are gonna have a lot of explaining to do when we get home, but... I'm glad you guys are safe."

Accelerator, packed right against Worst, only pursed his lips and let out a soft sigh, somewhat embarrassed by the situation. "Y-Yeah..." He could only muster out.

In the end, her gamble worked out. The distraction succeeded, and before she knew it, Accelerator used the strange object she held in her hands to make the serial killer disappear. Apparently to wherever he'd come from. After a few moments, Worst let a long breath out, only realizing just then that she'd been holding her breath. And soon after, Yomikawa had decided to pull the three of them together.

The raindrops no longer fell into her eyes, and the warmth spread to her as well. The woman who acted as their guardian almost felt like an umbrella as she shielded the Espers from the cold rain.

"Ah, but, Misaka didn't do anything wrong. Shouldn't you just interrogate Accelerator?" Worst said, seeming to pass all the fault onto him. With what little space they had, she nudged him a bit with her elbow.

"Hey, I told you to stay put at the market, but you just had to up and--" Accelerator began, shooting a look at Worst that could be described as hostile if it didn't seem like he was almost too tired to properly be hostile like he usually was.

His words were interrupted when Yomikawa seemed to hug them even tighter, almost in a deliberate gesture to squeeze the air out of them, before eventually loosening her grip. However, she hardly let the two out from her arms, continuing to act as an umbrella for them. "Jeez... You kids are gonna be the death of me, making me anxious like that. Though I suppose, if every time I decide to send the two of you off on your own that this much excitement happens, maybe it'll make our daily life a little less dull."

Amazing for a member of Anti-Skill, let alone a person living in Academy City at all, to say such a thing.

"... Tch. It's not the two of us that'll be the death of you. It'll just be this crazy lady over here, and she'll get to me first if nothing else," Accelerator said, nudging Worst back.

"Alright, alright, I guess not ruining the moment was too much to ask," Yomikawa sighed, eventually letting go. Accelerator let himself be doused in the rain, not bothering to turn on his ability again, whether because he was too tired to, or because he simply chose not to. And considering how oddly refreshing it felt, the sensation of something gentle yet perpetual like rain hitting his skin... It almost felt like a refreshing shower.

"In any case, before you get around to explaining the whole gist of what the hell went on, are there any loose ends you need to tie up still before we head back? And more importantly, do you at least have the chicken like I wrote?"

Accelerator was silent for a moment, as though pondering what to say for the answer to the first question. Let's see, there was...

Returning this device to Tsuchimikado.

Seeing if Musujime was gonna be alright.

Asking just what the hell was with that man, and what world he was from.

...

"Nah," Accelerator grunted flatly, mostly in response to the first question, while leaving Worst to give her own response as well.

In the end, that kind of moment would never last long with Worst and Accelerator packed in the same area.

"Ah, if it'll be this exciting every time Misaka goes shopping with him, maybe she'll do it more often~" There was a mischievous glint in her eyes as she spoke, like a bad kid who'd just found out something really annoying.

The Sister made no effort to protect herself from the rain, the water soaking her as her bangs began to cling to her face. It was a cool sensation. As though it was washing away the events of the day. With Kira completely gone, only this sensation and a single scrap of purple cloth proving anything had even happened.

That, and the warmth that remained from that hug.

As Yomikawa asked about the chicken, Worst suddenly remembered the abandoned cart. ...It was probably long gone by now.

"Misaka suggests heading to a restaurant."

"Ngh. Maybe... though I'd certainly feel bad about eating without Yoshikawa and Last Order. Heck, probably wouldn't hear the end of it for weeks," Yomikawa sighed, scratching the back of her head.

"We'll just take it all to go," Accelerator grunted, knowing firsthand what wrath Last Order was able to exact should she get peeved for whatever reason. Especially with Worst accompanying them...

"In any case, I, for one, am never going out with this broad ever again."

"Aw, don't be like that. If even Worst there knows that it's a good bonding experience, then it must be good for you. Knowing how well you socialize with others, you really could do well with deeper human interaction. Now come on! I know how tough you two can be, so you can at least walk with me to pick something up before you can collapse when we get home, right?!" Yomikawa exclaimed eagerly, her spirit evidently not disturbed by the encounter with Kira, though then again, knowing her profession, life-threatening situations were practically daily encounters for her.

As Accelerator and Worst were dragged along, trailing behind the woman who had led the two of them into the sidewalk, occasionally protected from the rain by the covers above, the Number One said one more thing to the Sister, averting his gaze from her. He started with a cough, and then...

"... Thanks. I couldn't have... saved Yomikawa without you..." He said with evident discomfort in his voice, as though uncomfortable with the thought of even uttering those words, further seen with how his voice was barely audible above the rain, a few murmur, but still able to be made out by Worst.

"Some protector I am if I had to rely on you to do the job. Go ahead, do your laughing thing then," he sighed in exasperation, more mildly annoyed with himself than any sort of depressed, the white-haired boy running a hand through his head.

"Tch, and Misaka was hoping they'd been forgotten..." Worst muttered to herself, a tinge of disappointment apparent for just a moment. She had to admit though, it wasn't like that kid's "Father" would have forgotten even if Yomikawa had managed to. So her hopes hadn't been particularly high, or rather even existent, in that regard. That response wasn't any kind of surprise at all.

When Accelerator had so meekly thanked her, though, that had been surprising.

"Kuku, you really are such a good boy now, aren't you?" The Sister cackled as Accelerator seemed as exhausted with her as usual. Then suddenly, she slung her arm around the boy's shoulders. "But that's okay. Misaka hates to admit it, but Misaka would have died to him herself, if Mr. Hero hadn't saved her. So Misaka will let you call it even, for now."

Her voice was some sort of strange mix of bitingly sarcastic and sincere as she dropped her body weight onto the lanky teen.

"..."

Accelerator softly sighed and bit his lip briefly, saying little more as he continued to walk alongside Worst. With him practically asking to be tormented, perhaps it was fitting that Worst would respond by giving the opposite reaction that he intended to get. But even so, it was strange to get such a reaction from her. Something... sincere. Then again, perhaps the same could be said for him to a degree, but he didn't want to hear anything about being "honest," lest Yomikawa start teasing him about it. Then again, if Worst got that idea in her head and started teasing him, then it could create a domino effect and...

...

Off-topic.

Mr. Hero, huh...

The Number One remembered a time when such a title mattered to him, like a child aiming to get a trophy for being the best at something. All that changed way back with World War III, which seemed like such a long time ago, but in reality, was only but a relatively recent occurrence. Felt like he was changing every day at that rate. Of course, how a person changed was influenced by whom they came into interaction with. From that Level 0 who'd dared to beat him in a fight, to the old man whom he had run into a few times here and there named Frank Castle during the old Murder Game business, and now...

Now it was those who lived with him. Yomikawa, Last Order, Yoshikawa, and... And of course, Worst.

They were the only ones that mattered now, and he would do everything to protect them, to protect this life that was given to him, that he did not deserve. Accelerator wondered if someone who wanted to protect others no matter what the cost, willing to do anything at all, despicable and not, could still be classified as a villain, but... Well, "villain" was a word that had lost its meaning to the Number One by now. But if Castle's words meant anything to him, Accelerator would be able to take from him that not only should he spend the present making up for the past, but also that the objective of protecting someone dear to oneself is just as capable of being selfish as it is noble, and if he were to take upon this goal, then he couldn't possibly be wrong, could he?

... Well. Maybe it didn't matter all that much.

It was an odd sensation. With his Redirection powers completely off for the time being, Accelerator was feeling a whole bunch of things he wasn't used to. Drops of cool rainfall hitting his body coming into conflict with the weight of Worst's body dropped upon him, Accelerator finding her quite... warm.

Warm like a human being. And yet, she was a Sister. A being that Accelerator had once considered to not even be human, but... Now that he had gotten to know some of them, beyond even Worst and Last Order... He couldn't believe that anymore. He couldn't believe their personalities and bodies were just manufactured and programmed. Truly, from the warmth of Worst's body to Last Order's erratic personality... They couldn't be anything other than human.

And if they were human, then perhaps... The possibility of determining one's own purpose in life would become possible.

Until then, it was all just conjecture in a world full of possibilities.
