The neon sign above your head demands your attention as your companion drags you forward towards the burly bouncer glaring down a group of passing teenagers. Apprehension seizes your muscles as you are forced forward. You've been curious about the on-goings inside the prestigious Familiar World, but neither yourself nor any of your friends had ever made it past the guard at the door. Having always been turned away for not being a member of some elite class. Now in college, you've made friends with an interesting girl who seems dead set on spending your Saturday night being subjugated to the bouncer's disapproving scowl of non-admittance. But as you near the building, your friends greets the bouncer like an old friend and he steps aside letting you in. Once inside, you find yourself completely dumbstruck by the pounding music that reverberated through the floor, yet hadn't extended past the lobby entrance. Upon further exploration, you discover you're surrounded almost exclusively by Witches of all ages and ethnicities as they enjoy their evening or practice their art. There is also a surprising number and variety of animals moving among them. From serpentine snakes gliding through stamping feet to majestic eagles perched on chandeliers - and was that a polar bear behind the bar? Tearing your gaze from the confusing spectrum, you notice one entire wall made of cork-board and riddled with flyers and magick-requests, almost all of which offering some form of reward - usually a bountiful amount of money but occasionally a rare or valuable item. "Welcome," Your friend greets from beside you, "To the Witch's Nightclub; A Familiar World. You're one of us now." She continues, but when you turn to ask her the dozens of questions running through your mind, you find yourself staring into the intelligent eyes of a wolf instead of your friend.

Rules
  • Semi-literate/literate roleplayers please, all posts should have a minimum of three to five (3-5) complete sentences
  • Please do not play both roles in a single partnership {if you’re playing a witch, please don’t play as that same witch’s familiar too}
  • The Witch-Familiar dynamic is a mutually beneficial relationship, making it a preferred partnership for both parties; witches get amplified power and familiars get stabilized magick and retain their sentience
  • Witches must align to one of the twelve types of magic (Aries & Pisces witches are both elemental but usually dedicate their craft to one element, statistically Aries witches usually prefer fire & Pisces prefer water, but they can dedicate their craft to any one of the four elements)
  • Familiar abilities are limited to transformation between human and animal, telepathy to commune with their witch in human or animal form, and all familiars subconsciously amplify witches’ powers making them a prized commodity for most witches
  • No non-existent familiars {no extinct or mythological-type familiars}
  • Some witches run magic shops, but most witches practice their craft as a hobby or sell their craft for hire
  • The Roleplay is mostly centered on the social dynamic

Game Rules
  • More primitive familiars are encouraged to stay in their human form while in the city
  • Primitive familiars have a harder time finding a compatible witch who can tend to their animalistic needs {a 19 year old girl who just moved out of her parents house and is currently renting a one-bedroom apartment isn’t going to be able to support the social or physical needs of a tiger or bear familiar}
  • Familiars have the same needs as their animal side {larger/more primitive familiars typically require more space and tend to get anxious and claustrophobic the longer they’re in the city/stuck in their human form, smaller/domestic familiars can stay in their human form almost indefinitely without consequence}
  • If a familiar stays in human form for too long it begins to go stir-crazy and its magick starts going out of whack until the familiar begins to lose sentience, and eventually it reverts completely to its animal form; this is known as going Feral or Ferality
  • A bound Witch can slow the process of Ferality by routinely imbuing their familiar with spiritual energy, but it does not prevent Ferality
  • All familiars will eventually become Feral; bonding with a Witch will significantly slow that process, while staying in human form for extended periods of time will significantly advance the process
  • It is typically frowned upon for a familiar to be in a relationship with their witch
  • Familiars are allowed to transform into their animal forms while inside the nightclub
  • The nightclub also seconds as a halfway house/safe haven for witches and familiars who have no where else to go

NightClub Positions
  • For those of you wanting to work at the NightClub, I've decided to include some common NightClub positions to make it easier
  • Motherly/Fatherly-Figure who owns the Club (1)
  • Management (1-2) - Management responsibilities include advertising, club promotion, booking entertainment, payroll, staffing, inventory control, cash reconciliation, and reporting profits and loss to ownership. Managers are also the go-to contact for smaller tasks like receiving shipments and big ones like accompanying inspectors for insurance claims or government permits
  • Entertainment (2-3) - DJs, musicians and dancers are commonly hired in nightclubs to provide nightly entertainment or to complement the jukebox on weekends and during special events.
  • Service Staff (no limit) - Bartenders prepare drinks, serving them to clients at the bar, and giving them to cocktail servers who run the drinks to clients in other parts of the club. In nightclubs that offer food in addition to drinks, additional jobs are created for food prep workers, cooks and wait staff. Cleaning jobs may be divvied among staff members, or additional bussers, dishwashers and housekeeping crews
  • Security (no limit) - door attendants and bouncers stationed throughout the interior. Door attendants restrict access by managing guest lists, enforcing dress codes and checking identification to ensure patrons are old enough to enter. Inside the nightclub, bouncers are responsible for ensuring staff and client safety. They keep an eye out for patrons who have overindulged, remove rowdy customers harassing the help and break up any fights or arguments that may occur.

ARIES
{elemental} Magick that is worked by honoring/acknowledging the 4 elements: Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. Commonly an Elementalist will dedicate different areas of their altars to each element, call upon them during spells and rituals, and use symbols to represent each

GEMINI
{crystal} crystals, gems, stones. Healing, spells, and chakras. Magick that is worked commonly with stones and crystals, such as during spellwork or for crystal healing techniques. This may also include chakra balance, crystal meditation… anything that uses crystals, really! A crystal witch may also have an extensive knowledge of stones, including how to identify them and using their properties.

CANCER
{culinary/kitchen} Magick that is worked specifically through “kitchen craft” such as herbal mixtures, brewing, baking, and cooking, and honors many aspects of the natural world: including herbs, crystals, fey, and the elements

LEO
{lunar} attunes to and honors the moon's cycles and phases, works more often at night under the energy and influence of the moon

VIRGO
{faery} Magick for those who communicate and work with the fey during spells and rituals. Usually, those who work with the fey may also leave offerings regularly, as thanks for the assistance of a faery in their spellwork.

LIBRA
{music/tech} Magick that is worked with music, musical chimes, or rhythm! Humming/singing, clapping, singing chants during spells, playing instruments (even simple ones, like the triangle or bells), or even just simply playing music during spellwork, magick, or during energy exercises are a few common things a music witch might fancy or Magick that is skillfully worked through technology! A tech witch will most likely have at least a few magickal apps on their phone, digital sigils, or an online/digital BoS and/or Grimoire

SCORPIO
{nocturnal} embraces the darker energies, very connected to the night and otherworlds, most of their work is done after midnight. Witches who commonly collect, clean, and use animal bones in their magickal practice, and for things like altar decoration or magick-infused charms/jewelry. Materials used by those who identify as Bone witches are usually collected peacefully or after the being has passed on naturally!

SAGITTARIUS
{storm} combines his/her energy with that of the weather, collects the elements {rain water & snow} for their craft. Magick that is worked by combining one’s energy with the energy of the weather, and most commonly rain. Weather witches will do things like collect rain/snow water, absorb the energy of a lightning storm, “whistle up” or manipulate wind, predict the weather, etc.

CAPRICORN
{astronomy} use runes, arcane symbols, sigils, & glyphs. A practice in which the person will perform spellwork in conjunction with or with the help of any manner of spirit. This includes Ouija, (sometimes) demon spirits, spiritual contact, etc.

AQUARIUS
{divination} works with various forms of divination {tarot, palmistry, tea leaf reading}. Mindful and internal magickal practice mainly based from interpreting dreams and/or engaging in lucid dreaming. Those who intensify as this may “de-code” symbols and messages in the dream world similar to how one would use a divination technique.

PISCES

Bound Witches: Troy (previously - Took Chloe in when she was very young and agreed to be her Witch but got mad at her whenever she left her animal form, never once calling her by her name, but rather by the pet name he had branded her with and took great pains to humiliate and insult her as often as possible, although he never laid a physical hand on her, he mentally and emotional abused her for most of her life until another Witch took offense at the way she was treated - even though Chloe thought it was completely normal - and harassed Troy about it until the abusive Witch eventually just abandoned Chloe one day. Once the Witch who had been harassing Troy found out, they brought Chloe to the NightClub, but Chloe refused to bond with the friendly Witch claiming that Troy would come back. After six years, Chloe still hasn't taken on a new Witch. Can someone convince her that Troy was an abusive jerk who isn't coming back?
Animal Appearance: Chloe is an average sized pale taupe, almost maize-colored ferret with tiny ears, a broken mask over a white face, a taupe-colored collar, and white foreleg socks and dark taupe hindleg boots. She has a dark taupe tail that blends out to a tiny white tip and a white-maize belly.
Human Appearance: A bronze-skinned woman with an unforgettable feel about her. She stands at 6"2' with broad shoulders and strong arms, a narrow torso, a defined waist, plump hips, and weak legs. Her chestnut brown hair is hip length and fine, and is well maintained with blonde highlights. She has an oval face, a cleft chin, rosy cheeks, and small ears. Her eyebrows are tapered at the end, and her small, mysterious eyes are light brown. Her nose is large and she has angled lips. She usually wears old clothes. Her particularly noticeable features are her double-pierced snakebite piercings and a small nose ring.

Personality: Chloe is creative and practical but tends to feel inadequate. She's a law-abiding citizen and not particularly adventurous. Introverted, she prefers to keep the harmony and tends to be a little too cooperative. Overall, she is very selfless and kind-hearted.
History: Chloe never knew her parents, her earliest memories are of wandering the streets trying to scrounge up enough to eat, until she eventually met Troy who offered her a life of ease as his familiar. Too desperate to look a gift horse in the mouth, she accepted his offer without questioning his motives and spent the majority of her life living as his emotional punching bag. When he was finally confronted about his behavior and treatment of his familiar, instead of changing his ways, Troy chose to abandon the ferret Familiar in search of greener pastures. Having become accustomed to Troy's treatment of her, Chloe couldn't be convinced that he actually left her and refused to bond with another Witch. Since then, she's been living at the NightClub, busing tables, and telling anyone who tries to recruit her that she's already bound to a Witch and that he'll come back for her soon, despite the fact that he left more than six years ago.
Anything Else: She prefers staying in her animal form to her human form, this could be attributed to the way she was treated by her last Witch, or the way she grew up on alone on the streets (after all, it's easier to find food for a starving baby ferret, than a starving child)

Appearance: Nero is a pale-skinned man with a goofy air about him. Standing 5' 9" tall, he has narrow shoulders and weak arms, a short torso and chiseled abs, narrow hips, and long legs. His dyed pastel rainbow hair is short and wavy and is painstakingly styled and maintained. He has a lean face with a softly shaped jaw with no facial hair, and his narrow, meaningful eyes are black. His nose is well-formed and he has narrow lips. He usually wears feminine clothes. His particularly noticeable features are his unique hair, his nice smile and his distinctive walk.

Personality: Nero is a very original kind of person, but tends to think he's always right... He can be particularly restless, and often requires positive feedback in order to complete anything. He tends to be a bit rigid and fussy, but he's almost always the center of attention - even if he doesn't want to be. Unfortunately, due to his flexible mindset, he can be a bit unreliable and gets sidetracked easily. He's also extremely sensitive to criticism, though he'll rarely show it in front of strangers.
History: Nero comes from a family of Witches, his father is an Aquarius Witch, his mother is a Taurus Witch, his older brother is a Pisces Witch, and his 13 year old little sister is well on her way to becoming a Cancer Witch. But Nero has always felt out-of-place, even among his diverse family members. He's always enjoyed music and artsy things than weaving his magick to actually make something out of thin air; he'd rather work for it himself. His family is completely supportive of his life decisions and are encouraging him to follow his own path and do his own thing.
Anything Else: Even though he's a tech Witch and going to school for something he could technically use her magick to make easier, he prefers not to.

Appearance: Animal Appearance- Ray's fox form is slightly larger than the average fox, heavy muscling beneath the thick fur. a white chest, the collar of white fur wrapping in a semicircle around the neck. The red-orange fur well groomed across his body, red fading to white toward the tip of his tail, white feet up to mid-leg and white tipped ears. Human Appearance-Ray is an attractive man, his jawline thin coupled with thin lips and a long nose, his beard finely trimmed and maintained to the last detail along with his hair long red hair that runs past his large ears. Ray is tall, reaching 5’11” (6’ when he wears his boots) he’s strong muscled to complete the handsome look of him and capable of lifting metal beam with seeming ease, making him a fitting companion in the workplace. Normally he can be found in a red or white sweater with denim jeans.

Personality: Ray is a fun loving and comical person, making people laugh and entertaining them is his greatest joy in the whole world, though this can often get out of hand when he tries to play an elaborate prank, hurting the feelings of many. This, of course, is often righted by his overpowering sense of guilt when he sees someone hurt by his doing, he sits down and talks, setting boundaries for himself. Boundaries though are often broken when forgotten, which is another of Ray’s problems, he ignores obvious rules to keep his bad boy mischievous rebel reputation up, thinking he’s such a clever man for doing so.
History: He grew up among the funny kids at school, learning the tricks of the trade and easily becoming a class clown, making it his life’s mission to make people laugh. After a few years the cool, funny guy act got tiring and he left it behind, mostly because his power had begun to kick in, making him feel different he pushed himself away from people who cared about him...eventually leading him to Familiar World and an all-new set of people to talk to and the witch that he is currently bonded to and shares a happy relationship with despite the odd looks they get.
His witch Kamdyn Paige met him years before when she came into the bookshop with Ethel Paige, he was fairly new to the store and didn't know much, but after a few months, he had noticed her peculiar reading schedule and material. When he went to investigate however he found a stuttering girl, too nervous to talk to him even though something in her eyes read that she had some hidden affection for him. After a few more months he made an attempt at talking to her, hoping she was more open the second time after she had learned about her witch bloodline. She could speak to him now in full sentences, something had changed. But she never really got the chance as they got caught up in each other, their love interests meeting and resulting in a budding relationship.
Anything Else: Don’t mention his scars, he gets overly defensive and irrationally upset.

Specialization: While pretty well rounded with many different types of crystal related magick, he does have a greater affinity for crystal healing, especially those that have to do with cleansing chakras and balancing out emotions.
Residence: Lives in an apartment with his twin sister.
Occupation: Works as a sort of ‘personal trainer’ for meditation, usually using his magick in the background to aid clients, and openly if they are witches as well.
Familiars: Open (Read till end) While he hasn’t had one, his sister has, and he sort of got a got a biased based on the experience. The Familiar was a raccoon, rather rowdy and while his sister didn’t mind the ruckus, he did. He is looking, though has a rather specific set of expectations for a good familiar, namely well-behaved, can pose as a pet when needed, and not opposed to living with his sister and possibly another familiar.
Appearance: Inheriting more from his fathers side, he has black hair and brown eyes, looking a bit paler than his sister. He is tall, 6 foot flat, thin and willowy, not very strong. He has narrow eyes and a long nose. He usually wears loose pants and a t-shirt, either keeping his hair in a bun when it’s long or curly short. When it’s cold out he’ll wear a woven poncho that was a gift from his praternal grandmother, even wearing it inside when he feels like it. When it’s warm out he’ll wear shorts, though he doesn’t enjoy them and only wears them when it’d be way to hot for pants.
Personality: He tends to cling to old rules and past experiences, always erring on the side of caution. He doesn’t want to really put himself out there, usually not taking part in parties and he is often very secretive or at least reserved about giving out information. For most things he tends to only get necessities, though he does overendulge in buying crystals, gems, and geodes as he uses meditation and chakra cleanses as a routine to help him with anxiety and keeping himself stable. While it’s hard for him to make good friends, those he opens up to will find him very loyal and steadfast, almost to the point of stubbornness, but he usually will yield if you make a really good argument. He is the responsible one of the twins, in charge of cleaning and has the steadiest income. His response to criticism is usually to dismiss it, especially if he deems it unwarranted or from someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. However, if someone reprimands him justly he will often try to fix it quickly and may apologize depending on how highly he thinks of the person.
History: Most of his family on his fathers side were witches, his grandmother in particular being a rather skilled Cancer affiliated witch and his Father being a hobbyist Aquarius diviner. He actually predicted his children’s affinities, and this allowed them to experiment with their magick early on. While his sister was more of a wild child and didn’t really follow the families rules of doing good in school and obeying parents, Tamaki was very obedient, seeing organization and ritual as the only way to be safe from bad energies and his fathers wrath. He collected gems and crystals, buying them online and finding them in the forests around his childhood home, and meticulously kept his collections, routinely cleaning and using his crystals. At 15, on a trip to the city, they first found Familiar World, and while his sister loved it, he decided to spend his time in shops getting crystals and atthe hotel doing cleanses. He developed a distaste for the populated city, but he did find a great shop that sold trinkets and crystals, which he would frequent later. This trip, his sister got her first familiar, a raccoon named Tenise. He was much older than her and was a nuisance. He didn’t particularly like Tamaki, and he found his sister spending less time with him and more time with Tanise. After a while, when Tanise went feral, he decided to move out. He had lived on his own for around a year before his sister cane asking to move in with him after she decided to go to a good art college in the city andwotk for hire at Familiar World. Her presence led to him coming to the club more often, and he soon began to offer his services in meditation and chakra cleansing.
Anything Else: Has minor anxiety disorder but isn’t diagnosed and uses his Magick to help.

Occupation: Art student, part time commissioner for artwork, and sells custom brews for several different effects.
Familiars: Used to have one, named Tenise, a raccoon familiar. He was a pretty good friend to her, though he was older and tried to make some advances that she was unaware of but was insistent on staying in his human form most of the time. Eventually he went feral, despite her efforts, and he seriously hurt her. This caused her to have a mistrust of familiars that look like or are raccoons (basically striped things and small furry clawed animals) . She is open to bonding, but can be a bit jumpy around certain familiars.
Appearance: 5’6, with wavy black hair and bright blue almond shaped eyes from her mother’s side. She tends towards t-shirts and leggings, as well as jeans and nice shirts when going to Familiar World. She loves to wear shorts when she can but will be reasonable in colder weather. Her skin is tanned from working in the sun a lot, gathering plants and tending to them.
Personality: An ambivert, Yuuna is just as comfortable snoozing alone or reading a book as going out and partying. She’s very friendly but due to previous experiences is very suspicious of people who try to woo her. In her work she is spontaneous, creating art when the mood hits and thinking up new brews while dozing. Her room is a mess with plants books and paint all over the place. She dabbles in every type of art, one day she’ll be painting a canvas the next drawing still wide, and her notebooks are often full of a mix of still life, cartoons and hyper-realism. She is rather sensitive to insults, even ones directed towards others and will try to defend people even if they don’t want her to.
History: Coming from a half witch family, here fathers side having two prominent and recent ones, her father and grandmother, she started her craft at a young age. She would scorer the forest and pick plants she found useful and buy seeds. At her childhood house she kept a garden full of plants she thought useful and would routinely make brews with her grandmother, a cancer affiliated witch. When she was fifteen, her family went on a trip, and she and her brother found Familiar World. She instantly fell in love with the place and frequented it, making friends. She soon met Tenise, a Familiar. She thought he was extremely nice and very polite, and despite some warnings from her brother and others that said he wasn’t a good match, she decided to bond with him. At first it was great, he helped her with her magic, and was fun to be around. But then he started to encourage her to sneak out, disrespected her parents, and tried to convince her brother to leave. After her brother left, Tenise s started going feral, knocking over her plants, leaving trash everywhere, raising the pantry and making even more of a mess than usual. When he finally did go feral, he stacked her in raccoon form after trying to seduce her as a human. After this incident, she left him to go live with her brother while her parents tried to chase him out of the house. She still lives with him after finding an art college that she could go to and opening an art and a brewing business.
Anything Else: She keeps Tenise’s attack on her a secret from her brother because she is afraid that he’ll tell her ‘I told you so’.

Occupation: Part Time bartender at the nightclub, as well as a PI and police consultant, he's openly in the public as a witch for hire, he's in the yellow pages, though most people look at that as a joke.
Familiars: He is currently looking for a familiar, he has yet to find one that can cope with his odd personality and work habits. Not to mention he has yet to meet a familiar that likes storms as much as he does.
Appearance:Standing 6' 1" tall, he has narrow shoulders and strong arms, his torso is average in size and he has toned strong legs. He has shaggy unkempt black hair almost always seeming like he has his finger in a light socket. He has vivid blue eyes as deep and interesting as the sea and he has a small nose and a sharp angular jaw.
Personality: James is a smart mouth, brash individual that seems to find trouble wherever it rears his head. He inquisitive and curious, wanting to discover thing no one has before. He also believes all should be protected, be it human, witch, or familiar, he sees everyone as worthy to be protected no matter their background. He can also be arrogant and cocky at times, which he sees as adding to his 'Charm’ factor.
History: James is fourth generational which and the last of his line after a fire destroyed his home, the cause of the fire was never determined and since then James has been searching for answers. This drive for answers led him to take up investigative studies in high school and afterwards took private courses for his private investigator license. He know runs a P.I firm and helps out as a police consultant when necessary.

It varies from individual to individual. Typically less "domestic"-type familiars go Feral faster, just because they're encouraged to stay in their human form more than Familiars who can pass as pets, which advances the process of Ferality. (Someone should start researching a Cure *hint*)

Olay, cool. So is that in like, years? Months?
 
20-30 years on average, but some can go Feral in as few as 10, just as some have some have been known to go almost their entire life without completely going Feral. It just depends on the Familiar. It's kind of like life-and-death, it's stalking you like your shadow and you never know when it's going to strike. I guess the better analogy would be finding out you have cancer? Do you give up, or keep fighting?

Residence: Technically he lives alone in the suite of a five star hotel that’s rarely inhabited. In actuality he lives in the kitchen he works in and sleeps on a cot his workers set up for him after they found him napping on some old potato sacks.

Occupation: World renowned chef
Familiars: He’s had two familiars before, and parted with both on amicable terms.

Appearance: Zinon is a titan of a man. Standing at 7’5”, with pale skin as white as snow, one of his arms is the size of another person’s torso, rippling with muscle that put some bear familiars to shame. His hair is platinum blonde of medium length and slicked back from his face using gel, and his face it set in an almost permanent terrifying scowl. Scars crisscross his calloused hands from accidents in the past.

He can often be found dressed in his (custom made) chef’s outfit, or tightly fitting grey shirts and pants.
Personality: Zinon is an incredibly nice and happy person, always willing to go that extra mile for others and the first to offer food as a way of helping others in dealing with problems. He believes the best form of medicine is a hearty meal, and there is no one else more suited to that than him.

He is not a loud man, shy by nature in fact, and as such his nervous silence has often been misconstrued to be intimidation thanks to his rather unnatural size and resting face. Despite this he’s always the first to care for and coddle others, and will listen to their problems all night. Most likely over of his meals.

History: Born in Russia to magical parents, he was always the least favourite child out of him and his three brothers. While his brothers could manipulate storms, light fires with their fingertips or bring life to plants with a thought, all he could do was... make good food. In Russia. The land of rarely anything but potatoes.

Needless to say it was hard.

It was only when he accidentally got caught up in gang related politics and shipped out of the country (don’t ask, he has no idea either) that he was able to truly explore his talents to their full extent. He found himself taking a loan from a bank to set up a small restaurant. It was there he met his first familiar, funnily enough a crab, and the two made a deal.

A few years down the line, as his skills were honed and his magic developed (he had no idea he could use his magic like that until his familiar pointed it out), he became too big for one tiny little restaurant. So he found another Cancer witch who was down on their luck, offering them his store on the terms that they take care of his familiar. Needless to say they rarely accepted, and a few months of teaching later Zinon left a free man.

He met his second familiar not long afterwards, after he had taken up freelance work, establishments paying nearly exorbitant fees for his services. The raccoon spirit was rapidly barrelling towards becoming feral, seemingly unwilling to become their proper form, and starving in a back alley in the form of a small child. Zinon immediately took mercy, taking the kid back to his home at the time and nursing them back to health, bonding with them the moment he figured out their true nature and slowing the feral process to a crawl.

It would take roughly eight years for them to separate. As the spirit matured and learned under Zinon, he eventually waved goodbye to her as she set out to find her own way in the world, leaving him alone once again. Favoured the world over for his efforts, but all in all alone. It had been years since had last heard from his first familiar or their master, and now that he was across the country there was little chance of finding them.

However he recently heard rumours of a nightclub dedicated to people like him, where spirits and witches mingled with ease. It took a month or two for him to work up the courage, but he eventually left his room under (a completely ineffective) disguise, and made his way towards the nightclub, in the effort finding companionship.

Yay! An older character, I do have a couple simple qualms though; 1. Acromegaly usually comes with some pretty nasty side effects, I don't mind him being uber tall, but 8' is kind of stretching it... 2. Witches can't stop the process of Ferality, only slow it down and they definitely can't reverse the effects that have already started to take hold.
