Here, evening falls like a rich velvet blanket of ebony, swallowing up the day, draining the colors to grey and then to nothing at all. There are no bright lights and soaring towers of the municipality. We are lost in the Pale, shut out by the overpopulated Capital to fend for ourselves in the starved wilderness.

+ The premise of Beyond Boundaries is to provide an unlimited creative opportunity for those who join: as the creator I have developed a loose plot course for the beginning of the roleplay. Beyond, writers have freedom of creative expression in their characters words, actions, and story arc. I will act as a baseboard for interaction via my own character, the environment, and any possible antagonist characters that may arise throughout the RP.
{ RULES }
↠ Advanced writers preferred (200+ words per post).
↠ This is my own plot and interface that I have created completely on my own. Please respect that there may be minor plot holes or slow points during arcs!
↠ Give other writers the chance to reply when group interaction occurs.
↠ All characters must be human of any race/gender (try to keep things balanced gender-wise). Avoid supernatural/magical/etc. abilities. This is a purely Dystopian setting.
↠ If you drop off of the face of the website and cease to respond for any long period of time (without prior notice) the other participants have the option to create a reason as to why your character has suddenly left.
↠ Romance/whatever else is fine as long as everyone is included in the main roleplay. I encourage side-threads as well if you are into cultivating the stories of a pair so long as you come back to the main thread and participate there!!

{ LORE }
THE PALE In the year 2052, severe inflation led to an economic bubble that caused the worldwide economy to collapse. Currency became worth nothing; children stuffed their boots with dollar bills to keep warm, others ate them just to keep their bellies full on cold nights. Democracy burned out; riots ensued. The United States government burned entire crops to keep its swaying citizens in compliance. Borders between countries blurred as territorial wars were fought out over resources and medical systems shut down, leading to contagious illnesses eradicating entire communities. Formerly curable illnesses such as the flu ran rampant through countries- it was said that by 2057 the entire population of Cuba had been killed by the norovirus, not a single person left standing. Planes grounded permanently. Oil stopped pumping, and gasoline went from a highly prized commodity to a thing of the past. People lost their rituals; bodies went unburried, filling morgues to the brim. Religion was all but lost as people burned holy relics for warmth, losing faith in their Gods as time went on. Food became the center of attention; without imports, and with the now fallen government's burning of crops, starvation was common. Weapons- knives, guns, even baseball bats, served as the common means of protection for many.
Any yet through it all, a select few saw hope- not hope in freedom or democracy, as the former Founding Fathers had, but hope in a new system: in the heart of the United States in 2073, something began to stir. It traveled from Salt Lake City to Santa Fe, from Columbus to Chicago. It settled in formerly-Denver with a new name: the Municipality. Sustenance was its bargaining chip. The American population, which had fallen from an overburdened 300 million to a slim 300 thousand flocked to its promise. It was a promise not of starvation, but of fields of full crop. Not of sickness and disease, but of medical intervention. Of struggle for a greater cause. Those who got close enough saw it: lights shone in the night, something unseen since the Collapse. Electricity. Railways vibrated, carrying carts of coal and fresh fruits. Greenhouses full of ripe vegetables shone in the night like vibrant, promising stars.
Their vision remained unhindered for a long time. They watched from Boulder, from Fort Collins, from Colorado Springs. Every so often, a loved one would vanish. It was a promise from the Capital that they were next; that they, too, could be saved. Even as the Wall was built, hindering their sight of the vast and great city, their hopes soared; one at a time, people were taken in the night. All that was left in their place was a basket of shining, perfectly ripe fruit. A gift from the Municipality.
And then it stopped. The baskets, once tokens of promise for the next person's entry, stopped. People converged on the wall; steel, hundreds of feet tall. They begged, pleaded into its surface. Some scratched messages of anger, of fear- and the city was silent. The railways quivered, the lights shone, but contact had ceased.
People continued to starve through 2078. As winters came and went, the population thinned. People stared ahead with hollow cheeks and glazed-over eyes at their promised City. Houses crumbled. Filled with black mold and asbestos, buildings were no longer safe to stay in. Those strong enough to migrate left the outer cities and trekked into the wilderness.
Word traveled slowly; they called this place the Pale. There they lived, surviving off of what they could scavenge from the land. Small communities formed wherever convenient- in other places, people traveled alone. Murder did not arise from the same drive that it had before the Collapse- those people had been fueled by sex, drugs, and anger. In the Pale, the competition for resources became cutthroat. Weaponry was as advanced as it had been before- knives for skinning animals, bats to hide under your pillow in case someone followed your tracks. A rifle, to put a precious bullet through the heart of a buck. Miss and you don't eat for a month.
This is how it went for long months- deep in the winter, sickness and starvation killed. It was then that the supply drops began. White lines streaked the skies as, once monthly, a jet would drop a parachute of vital goods to grid centers surrounding the Municipality. The people of the Pale anticipated these drops- filled with grain, clothing, flashlights, weapons... But no people. Competition for these drops led to grievous deaths in and around the fly zones. People rarely saw the planes themselves- occasionally, a glimpse of matte black metal against a faded horizon would catch a hunters attention. Rumors spread that it was the fallen Mexican government trying to gain territorial access to the Northern United States- others whispered that they came from the Municipality.

The current year is 2079. The supply drops from the Municipality began 12 months ago.
Something drastic changes for your three characters, who up until this point have led cold, starved, weary lives of the Pale with no knowledge of what has gone on within the Wall.
THE MUNICIPALITY Formed in the year 2073 in formerly-Denver, Colorado, the Municipality was an organization deviating from an inter-governmental international project created by various governments worldwide that foresaw the fall of the world economy. The participants, hand-selected from worldwide governments, used resources set aside in a secret bunker beneath the Denver International Airport to rebuild the city. The aim of the organization, however, became skewed in the year 2075. As the city was rebuilt, power changed hands multiple times in a series of peaceful political battles, unbeknownst to the people of the Pale, which are admiringly called 'Outsiders' by people of the Municipality. Members of this elite city are descendants of once-important political figures, and the majority of them have been kept from the true situation outside of the Walls. Those that deviate from the Municipalities rule within its Walls have been known to simply vanish. Culture of the Municipality runs off of atheist, socialistic principals:
1. Every member of the Municipality must serve a purpose. Homelessness, unemployment, disruptive discourse and failure to complete duties are all punishable by death.
2. Every line of work must be carried out by the Municipalities citizens alone. They cannot rely on any outside source of resources.
3. Formalized education takes place from ages 5-10. Children are educated on subjects such as: ecology, conservation, and engineering. Religious studies and history are not taught. They are encouraged in the subject of physical fitness, mostly through cardio, but are not taught how to wield weapons or fight whatsoever.
4. Once formalized education has concluded, children are given a test that compiles their strengths and attributes and matches them to a lifelong profession dictated by the State. Common jobs are: upkeep (cleaning, recycling, disposal), harvesting (maintaining and cultivating crops), medicine, and other mundane but entirely necessary positions. Professions seen before the collapse such as Artists and Therapists are few and far between; they act as a direct vessel between the State and its citizens. Artists paint peaceful propaganda and sculpt public sculptures for parks and buildings, and therapists often council those that fail their duties under the government's watchful eye.
5. Currency is not tangible. Citizens are provided with everything that they need in their lives so long as they meet their work 'quotas.'
6. All citizens must be subject to constant surveillance to ensure that they are doing their duties without running the risk of underground crime, markets, etc. Cameras with direct lines to a government control center sit in almost every public space.
Overall quality of life, particularly mental and physical health, is much higher within the walls of the Municipality than in the Pale. The life expectancy for both genders hovers at 73, whereas in the Pale most people die by the age of 35. In the year 2075, after the brief battle for power in the City, a population shortage occurred due to expansion and consumption of resources. With concern for the population and knowing there was an abundance of people just outside of the Wall, a series of experiments were approved by the Government and were conducted without knowledge of its citizens. Ordinary people of the Pale were taken in the night and placed into isolated chambers to observe the adverse effects of starvation and disease intervention beneath the city. Many died and when it was concluded that they would not tolerate the environment of the Municipality, the rest were terminated. The contact with the people of the Pale ceased.
Years later, a second plan was developed and put into effect;
Operation Z. Supply carts of nonperishable goods, resources, and weapons were dropped from the sky at night by planes. Unbeknownst to the people of the Pale, desperate for these valuable items, their every move was to be tracked for the next twelve months. Cameras, drones and tiny tracking devices floated just beneath their noses, inside of every good that they acquired. The goal of this operation was to see how the implementation of sudden, high bursts of resources effected the people of the Pale. After careful observation over time, it was time to introduce the people of the Pale to the Municipalities citizens.

The current year is 2079. The population shortage began 12 months ago.
Something drastic changes for your three characters, who up until this point have led comfortable, well-fed, average lives of the Municipality with no knowledge of what has gone on outside of the Wall.

PRESENT Three people from the Municipality and three people from the Pale are selected to be a part of the State's new program: Beyond Borders. Those from the Municipality are told that they have the opportunity of a lifetime to sign into a program that will offer them a glimpse into the outside world. Thousands apply, and only three are chosen. These subjects will be packed with resources and weapons and flown in with the next supply drop... For them and the people of the Pale, unraveling the tarp to find three Municipals instead of a months worth of resources will be something most surprising.

{ SUMMARY AND IMPORTANT INFO }
The three municipals will have no idea where they are going beyond that they will be able to 'experience' the outside world. These characters can be anyone from a non-governmental position (although they can have family or descendants within the government via backstory.) They are fairly educated but were not raised to fight or wield weapons of any fashion, however they are very skilled in their Government-selected job of your choosing. They also were not educated on survival in the Pale. They call the people living in this wilderness 'Outsiders' but know very little of their struggle. These characters may know each other or be introduced on the plane ride to their destination, it is your choice. Each participant is given a backpack containing a small ration of food, a full water canteen, some bandages and alcohol, and one personal item of your choosing. They are dressed in sturdy boots, pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a thick jacket. They also each have one small weapon of your choosing (anything from a knife to a basic pistol).

The three Outsiders will encounter the next supply drop containing the Municipals, expecting it to be supplies. These people have no formal education and you may write their backstory as you please (including family and struggle). They may have any skill that they would encounter in this wilderness (hunting, trapping, weapons) but nothing technical or including modern technology. This creates a balance between the characters. In turn, they know very little about the Municipality's inner workings. Feel free to come up with their inventory but keep in mind it must small enough to be carried on their backs at all times. Keep to one small weapon and perhaps one of larger caliber.

arden

Origin: The Pale. An 'Outsider,' to Municipals.
Age: 26-ish. She isn't entirely sure.
Personality: Cold, cruel, and calculating. She puts survival over other's (and her own) emotions. She isn't as openly opinionated as she is logical, believing that peoples' paths in the Pale can't be led by others. She tries her best to avoid relying on other people for this reason and is insanely stubborn. She prefers isolation and solo-drifting to being accompanied by groups because people complicate matters- they eat more food, make more noise, and require more attention; all things that she cannot afford.
Physical Abilities: While Arden is certainly well-muscled from constant travel, constant hunger and malnutrition have taken their toll on her body. Height-wise her growth capped at 5'7" despite both of her parents nearing six foot, and she is severely underweight. She is capable of running, walking, climbing, and other activity for short periods of time but because of her low-calorie diet she cannot maintain these for hours at a time.
Knowledge/Education: She has no formal education and cannot read and write. She knows which flora to avoid but is not knowledgeable in what plants are edible beyond berry colors, what plants may be useful for medicine, etc. She is not particularly skilled in hunting or trapping but is adequate in her knowledge of scavenging from animal carcasses and desecrated buildings. Unlike most other things, Arden is exceptionally knowledgeable in the array of weaponry available in the Pale. She knows what their uses are, how to use them, and what situations best suit them- however due to the rarity of many weapons she has only encountered several once or twice and knows of them only from word of mouth. She hasn't had great practice with long arms such as rifles and thus is shabby in her aim but takes particular care in her knowledge of smaller firearms, a large array of knives, and even crossbows.
Backstory: Not uncommon for people of the Pale, Arden hopped around from caretaker to caretaker in her childhood. She isn't ignorant of the fact that most children were accidental and unwanted by their parents or, in her case, parent. She stayed for a longer period of time with a man named Bill who was a weapons trader on the outskirts of Pueblo. Eventually they parted ways as she reached her age of independence. Since then, Arden has migrated in a roughly one hundred square mile radius around the Municipality- scavenging, exploring, and collecting.
Other Info: Arden is currently in possession of a Beretta 92 which she traded with an old friend for another pistol with no ammunition that she found at the site of a air drop massacre. She has a dull antique Swiss Army knife that doesn't have much of a use survival-wise and a heavy-utility blade.
