The smell of waste wafted around the young woman's being as she fished through the refuse pile. Luckily for her, she was blocked in by two tall buildings, and was several hours early enough to get what she needed before the bins were taken to the incinerators. Due to her small frame she had to lean into the bin, though she had tied her hair up so that it didn't become contaminated along with her hands.
EKxdSb6.png
Sure, it was blatantly uncouth for her to be doing this. But she did what she needed to do to survive. Her younger brother Benjamin had school to distract him from his hunger pains, but what did she have? Eight hours a day in a factory? Stuffing a crust of stale bread into her jacket pocket, the young woman hopped back from the crate that she had been stood on. Her sneakers made a squeak against the concrete flooring, and she turned to flee from the alley.
EKxdSb6.png
It wasn't much, but it was certainly something to sate her raging hunger. Her family hadn't had anything decent to eat since the Guard stopped sending relief meals to their ramshackle home- and even those weren't worth much. Her cheekbones had began to grow hollow, and the ridges of her spine protruded harshly from her skin. She game most everything she got to her mother and brother, though did keep enough for herself to keep moving. But even then, what she manages to scavenge was never enough. Ben complained at night of his stomach being empty, and Cassia often used what meager pay she got from working in the factory to try and purchase soap or other basic commodities at the market.
EKxdSb6.png
But they couldn't eat soap. Stuffing both hands into her pockets, she had just rounded the corner when she felt someone yank at her elbow. Spinning, she came face to face with an Officer dressed in gray uniform.
EKxdSb6.png
"Excuse me, Miss. Take your hands out of your pockets." She could smell the mint of fresh toothpaste on his mouth. God, how she'd kill for toothpaste.
EKxdSb6.png
"No." The man tugged harshly at her elbow. Her right hand, which had been gripping the bread crust inside of the pocket, was pulled free; her spoils of war fell to the ground.
EKxdSb6.png
"You know better than to steal, girl. That is a crime against our Nation." His breath came as something of a hiss. He looked healthy- surely he had never known starvation as she had. It was a common acquaintance by now. She said hello as they passed on the streets, fell asleep thinking about it. Her stomach grumbled.
EKxdSb6.png
"It- It was just a bread crust, p-please."
EKxdSb6.png
The man sighed heavily, still gripping her arm. "I'm sorry, kid, but you are going to have to come with me."
EKxdSb6.png
"No, don't-" He reached for the taser at his belt. She had never been the victim of one, but had seen it happen, and did not want that for herself. Cassia froze, swallowing back a lump of fear and hatred that had been rising in her throat.
EKxdSb6.png
"I thought so. Lets get going, now." And with that, they began to walk.

Jerran;
EKxdSb6.png
His trigger finger had always been a bit twitchy. Jerran lowered his crossbow, marked with the insignia of the Officers (it had been stolen in one of their raids against the village, of course) and allowed his gaze to lazily scan the forest floor. He was also not the best shot, but he knew that his bolt had struck true by the way that the rabbit had jerked sideways before fleeing a few steps and collapsing. It lay about twenty meters out, now, very still.
EKxdSb6.png
He was tying up the animal's legs so that he could sling it over his back for his trek back to the village when he heard it. A tinny noise, not unlike the clap of an oncoming gale.
EKxdSb6.png
A gunshot. It came from the west, which was the opposite way from the village- but who was to say that a hunter had not wandered a bit too close to a Patrol and been shot? Dropping the rabbit, Jerran broke out into a run towards the noise. He knew the woods well- almost too well, as he leaped over a familiar fallen log and ducked under branches of the large oaks that loomed overhead. He had no idea where the shot had actually come from, and slowed to reload his crossbow- listening for sounds of struggle, or another gunshot. Anything to tell him that someone was near.
EKxdSb6.png
There it was. The faint sound of breathing- ragged, the sort that comes on when you are struggling to take air in. Scanning the forest floor, Jerran's eyes found the man. He was sprawled out, a deep red splotch growing on his chest. Whoever had done this was gone already. Rushing forward, the young man kneeled beside him. He recognized him, vaguely, from the village- the butcher, perhaps. He knew that he had two young sons, nonetheless.
EKxdSb6.png
"It will be alright. You'll be alright, yeah? Lets just get you back, alright?" Jerran knew full well that there was nothing that medics from the village could do besides ease his pain. The man's color was already drained from his face, and a slow but sure death rattle had set in. The older man closed his eyes, the splotch on his chest growing steadily still.
EKxdSb6.png
"Tell my boys I love them, please. Just.. Tell them.." Jerran slung his crossbow over his shoulder, letting the strap lay comfortably against his chest. He slid his forearms under the mans armpits and began to drag. He sure as hell wasn't going to leave him there, even if he died on the way back. he deserved a proper burial. The men that did this, however, did not.

Zachary:

The young male had been busy that afternoon, trying to sell his wares in the Market. His family didn't much and he didn't fit in with the other merchants and their near rotting apples, but his mother had a decent hand with the needle, despite the fact that she could not see. He was charged with selling her goods and often times he could make one or two sales, but like Zac's family, the people around him did not have money for the essentials, let alone clothes.

He packed the clothes he'd been unable to sell, counting out the coins in his hand before, sighing, and putting them into his pocket. He considered nicking an apple but just as the thought crossed his mind he heard the voice of an Officer.

He followed the sound and recognized a girl he'd seen around, here and there. An Officer stood, his hand gripping her elbow as he made her dump what could only be described as a crust of bread. It would hardly satiate the hunger of anyone living in this village and she'd probably dug it from the trash. He sighed and surged forward, without thinking, "Lucy!" He called the name, catching up to both the girl and the Officer. He took the girl's free hand, "Lucy, I've talked to you about wondering off. Thank you, Officer. My sister, she's not well in the head and she tends to wander. I hope she hasn't been of any trouble, I'll just take her home now..."

The pair stopped and the Officer eyed Zac, indifferently. "Your sister was found thieving." The smell of mint on the man's breath made Zac's stomach rumble.

"I'm sorry, sir," He looked at the morsel of bread that the officer was holding. "But it looks like that was just found in the trash, please understand..."

"Theft is theft," the Officer stated sternly.

"Look," Zac dug two of the five coins out of his pocket. "I can pay the Nation back. She's just a sick kid." He discreetly nudged the girl, hoping she'd get the point and look a little mentally deranged.

Heidi was patrolling the edge of the village, her bow at the ready. It had been a fairly quiet afternoon. No outsiders had been spotted and there had hardly been a rustle in the wind. She didn't let her guard down, though, after what had happened last time. The small women sighed and just as she did she heard shots in the distance.

A beat and the light haired girl blinked, then she was running toward the ladder. She had to inform the rest of the members of the patrol.

Once she'd climbed up onto her perch, she let out a low whistle. To the untrained ear it would sound like any number of birds in the forest, but the pattern was specific. She heard the echoing call and knew that the message had been passed. Surely they'd heard the shots, regardless. Heidi took her station, bow taut and ready for any intruders to come. She knew others in the Patrol were similarly situated, watching and waiting.

For thirty minutes she stayed, sitting in the tree tops, carefully blending in. Finally, her dark eyes caught sight of movement. It was a male dragging another male, wearing the uniform of the Officers of the Nation. She slit her eyes but then saw the bow on his back and as he drew closer, she recognized the man he was carrying along. Heidi felt her heart stop and she pursed her lips into a high whistle. It was safe, but there was an injury. Then she grabbed the rope and dropped down to land in front of the walking and the injured.

Cassia;
EKxdSb6.png
Cassia spun with the unfamiliar name 'Lucy' sounded behind them. The Officer kept a tight grip on her upper arm, and she shot the young man a confused look. She remained confused momentarily as he spoke, her mind a bit slow from- well- starvation. It certainly takes a tole on your body. She was no actress, and had certainly never blatantly lied to an Officer before. Conflicted about what to do, she bit her tongue and listened to the two bicker.
EKxdSb6.png
She supposed that she ought to be thankful-- though she felt more confused than anything. Why was a stranger helping her? Sure, she was hungry- but it was stealing, and it was against the wall. Being caught lying to an Officer of all people had a far worse punishment than the three lashes and a stern talking to that she would get for taking the bread.
EKxdSb6.png
Cassia pulled at her arm a bit, though the man's grip remained. He eyed the coins, and then the boy- considering his offer. Officers were corrupt, she knew that- but he could get in even more trouble for trying to bribe one. She had no idea what the officer would do.
EKxdSb6.png
"Fine." Shoving Cassia to his left and taking the coins, the Officer quickly made them vanish into one of his many coat pockets. "Consider it a warning. If I catch either of you stealing again, you will both suffer the consequences."
EKxdSb6.png
She took several deep breaths, gaze shifting to the man as the Officer turned and left. She did not feel so embarrassed, perhaps a bit perplexed. Muttering a 'thanks,' she bent to pick up the crust.

Jerran;
EKxdSb6.png
It took a while to drag the man back, though Jerran was moderately fit and perfectly capable of it. The terrain was also rather flat from where they had been to the village; a small plateau among the larger woodlands that provided for nice defenses in the cases of raids.
EKxdSb6.png
"Medic! I need a medic!" He shouted up at the guards, who he knew would be stationed where they were. He blinked and lifted his head as the thud of someone jumping down came from behind him, carefully resting the man down and looking back. The face was not as familiar as it perhaps should have been, but he knew vaguely who she was. The blonde hair gave her away.
EKxdSb6.png
"He is still breathing. A patrol must have come around and shot him." Jerran was not one for chitter chatter, looking over as another guard who had jumped down began running towards the village to get a stretcher. He turned back to the injured man, crouching beside him and resting a hand on his shoulder. He was unconscious, but he spoke to him anyways.
EKxdSb6.png
"You'll be alright. We've got you here." Giving the shoulder a pat, Jerran went to his belt and unhooked the GPS device that everyone who went outside of the village carried. They had all been stolen from the raids- in fact, most of their technical things had. It was a safety precaution, really. He hooked it onto his own belt, silently reminding himself to take the man's and his own back to the man that dealt with the tracking later on.

Zachary

His heart was pounding from the stress and finally the Officer gave in. "Yes, sir. Won't happen again." As soon as the Officer turned, Zac bent as well to offer the bread back to the girl but she'd already grabbed it. "You're welcome. There's hardly enough to go around as it is." He sighed, feeling awkward now that his heroic moment was over. He cleared his throat and shifted his feet, "Are you... okay?" He winced at his own awkwardness and sighed.

Heidi

"A medic will be on the way, soon." She eyed the male for a moment, only recognizing that he was a Raider, nothing else registered with her and she bent low to examine the fallen man. "What are their Officers doing so far out here?" The butcher couldn't have been too far from their treetop village, and the Officers did not often wander past their own borders. She stood and turned back to the male who had carried the man back here. "Any other detail you can give, where exactly did you find him?" The Patrol would have to be sent out to make sure there was no other Officer wandering around the forests and she would need to provide as much detail as possible.

In the meantime the village would be put on curfew until it was determined the forests were clear again.

Cassia;
EKxdSb6.png
"Yeah, fine," was her only response to the boy's question. She did not want to hang around and make herself out to be any sort of victim, straightening and stuffing the crust back into her pocket. "You shouldn't have done that. You know what they do to people that lie and try to bribe them," her brows furrowed. Cassia looked rather conflicted as of yet, stepping off to the side with every intention to get to work at the factory and leave this event behind herself.
EKxdSb6.png
Beginning to step away, she cast another glance at him- the stranger that had, sure, saved her a few lashings- but she still had no idea why. Who did that, in this world? Everyone looked out for their own skin. Nobody tried to help anyone else, rarely even their family members.
Jerran;
EKxdSb6.png
"Yeah," he replied to her comment about the medics, straightening and looking towards the village. "I'm not sure what he was doing in the middle of the forest. I found him about a mile south, near the outpost that they set up a few days ago. By the time that I got there, whoever shot him was gone."
EKxdSb6.png
The man on the ground groaned, stirring a bit. Perhaps it wasn't a fatal wound, but Jerran was not about to take any chances- crouching beside the man again. "Hey. Hey, I'm here. They're coming to help you. Do you know ho shot you?"
EKxdSb6.png
The man spat some blood onto the ground beside him, clutching at his chest.
EKxdSb6.png
"Yeah, yeah... Officers, a whole.." He trailed off again, giving no indication as to what ever else he was going to say. Sighing, the young man stood again.
EKxdSb6.png
"Sounds like he was ambus-" Three loud CLAPS sounded in the distance. They were tinny- more gunshots. Jerran looked towards the shots, and then to two medics running from the north with several guards by their side. Leaving the man in their hands, he started out towards the shots.

Zachary

He shrugged. He probably shouldn't have, and he wasn't sure what made him stop and help. Probably because he liked the thrill of potential danger. "It was hardly a bribe," He scoffed. "Two coins, it was certainly more than any person would have paid for that bread but hardly something that could constitute a bribe." He sighed, sensing her eagerness to get away from him.

"Ah, well, alright then." He gave her an awkward smile, an expression that felt foreign on his face. He took his own step away, turning from the girl, then. There was a shout from behind them and Zac looked up to see an Officer glaring angrily in their direction, but... he couldn't be talking about them, could he?

Heidi

She leaned down, hoping that the man could offer them some insight. The medics were arriving, though, and it did not look like he was going to be sharing anymore information. The blonde woman bit at her lip and looked up as the sound of shots rang through the forest once more. Her eyes were wide and she quickly scurried up the same rope she'd dropped down from.

Once up she took to the trees, scrambling through their elaborate system of bridges and planks carefully hidden and built into the trees. The boy was brazen, running on the ground like that when they had no clue how many of the officers were out there. She pushed her legs to go faster, leaves catching in her hair as she ran. Soon enough she could hear voices and Heidi slowed. Whatever the Raider had planned, Heidi would have his back. She knew, too, that more of the Patrol were coming spears and arrows ready. She knocked her own bow, leveling it one of the Officers. She let loose and it hit home in the neck and she was on the move once more before they could even swing their metal guns up in the direction she'd shot from.

Silly Officers and their loud guns.

Cassia;
EKxdSb6.png
"Yeah, right." Unconvinced of the Officer's harmless methods, Cassia hurried down the path. She did not offer a hello or goodbye to the boy, but rather headed straight to her place of work; a factory. It smelled horrible- like tar, she got dirty doing her work, and she hated it.
EKxdSb6.png
Her shifts were eight hours long. There was no break for lunch, and she was often kept overtime with no compensation. Today, however, Cassia was let loose right when the clock struck seven. Odd, she thought, as she shrugged off her apron and stuffed it into her locker.
EKxdSb6.png
"Cassia Gadsden?" She turned, not recognizing the voice. Two officers dressed in grey- with gold bands around the arms- stood in the doorway. Her coworkers quieted and glanced towards her. It was clear that she was in some sort of trouble.
EKxdSb6.png
"We will need you to come with us."
Jerran;
EKxdSb6.png
Jerran indeed was brazen, runing through the all-too familiar woods on a path that was primarily guided by splotches of the other man's blood. As he neared the vices, however, he slowed- ducking behind the trunk of a large oak. Shouts sounded as soon as the blonde woman's arrow struck true- and he knew just where she was, and what paths she would be taking around the treetops. Glancing around the side of the tree, he froze- an Officer, separated from his group, had wandered a bit too far away. As soon as he came within two meters of his hiding place, Jerran stepped out.
EKxdSb6.png
He snapped the man's neck in an all-too familiar gesture. The form crumpled, and Jerran knelt- ditching his crossbow in favor of the man's semi-automatic and pulling his hat onto his own head. Luckily, he was already wearing their grey uniform (it worked great in scenarios like this, and for Raiding), and within minutes Jerran was back on the prowl, striding towards the group.
EKxdSb6.png
They were all still in a bit of a frenzy, and he kept his head low as he approached.
EKxdSb6.png
"Did you see anything, Officer Mackenzie?"
EKxdSb6.png
"No, Sir." He certainly was confident in his ability, here. Brazen he sure was.
EKxdSb6.png
"Right. Fan out, men. Look for the bastards that did this- they have to be close."

Zachary:

He didn't stop to look back at the girl who had already taken off. She'd seemed less than welcoming of his help and he had his own problems to deal with now. He hurried away from Market before the Officer ever got close enough to get a good enough look at him.

When he got home, his mom was busy working over fabric, her quick fingers passing through. "Hey, ma." he murmured, stopping to kiss her cheek. She smiled, serenely and asked about his sales at market. She wasn't disappointed that he'd used two of their five coins to help a stranger, though her brow creased in worry.

"We'll be fine, ma." He told her, quietly, before setting her breakfast in front of her. Once she was set up for breakfast he hugged her goodbye and went out to his second job, working at The Farm. It was grueling work and by the end of the day he was sweating and had forgotten about the girl completely.

That was, until he returned home to find two Officers on his doorstep. "Zachary Owens?" He eyed the two men, carefully, and then glanced to the side debating his chance of running. "We're going to need you to come with us." They moved in, one on either side and Zac sighed.

"I need to make my mother's dinner." The two men scoffed. "She's blind. You can come in and watch, if you like, but at least let me feed her before you take me." The two exchanged a glance and the one on his right nodded.

Indeed they did come in and watch him carefully while he made his mom dinner and crouched beside her to say goodbye, "I've got to go for a bit, ma. I'll be back soon, though." She nodded, but he was pretty sure she knew exactly who the other two voices in the house were.

Heidi

"Did you say anything Officer Mackenzie?" She had her bow pointed, ready.

"No, sir." She hesitated. That voice was vaguely familiar and she leaned low on her perch, trying to get a better look. The uniform was not as neat as the rest and her eyes went wide. He was going to get himself killed, playing soldier. Raiders. They were often reckless.

She sighed and took aim on the one who had asked the question, rather than shooting one of her own. They were fanning out and she followed the one, stepping carefully on the high branches until.... she let another arrow loose on one of the men. She opted to save the leader for last, hoping that Patrol could interrogate him. He'd have the most information, she guessed.
