Beyond the World We See
Out of Character

The hustle and bustle of the digital age means that the average person, if they so desired, can see anything, know anything. Yet with the collective recorded knowledge of humanity at our fingertips, if anything the world around us is only murkier. The more we see, the less we know, yet there must be something we’re missing, no? Something must be out there, beyond the world we see.

The Premise:

Beyond the World We See is a hybrid roleplay of sorts, drawing elements from both mystery and slice-of-life. Exploration and discovery of self, others, and the world around us is the primary theme, along with secrets. Every person has secrets, whether obvious or well-kept, whether minor or life-changing. Those aspects and knowledge and experiences we hold beneath the surface often shape who we are more than anything else. If you've read this far, you will be putting something in your character sheet so I know you're reading the page.

While learning more about people is vital to becoming closer to others and discovering about yourself, there are some things that are better left unknown..

The Setting:

Beyond the World We See will primarily take place in Bluefort, a fictional suburb of Kansas City, and in terms of time, it'll be set somewhere in the last several years. The one thing every character will have in common is that they will all have moved in to Bluefort in the last 6 months, as an unusual number of houses and apartments of various shapes and sizes were all for sale. Some came to find a better life, others simply finding their way for the first time, others are just coming because it was a cheap house in an decent neighborhood. Some of the formerly-vacant houses are beside each other, some are not, but there are quite a few of them. All of the homes also have radio, and the place has excellent coverage. There's even a local radio station, the Bluefort Morning Show.

Rules or Guidelines:

Aside from the obvious (be courteous to other players, don't metagame, GM's word is law, etc), there's only a few big guidelines and they largely deal with certain aspects of character creation.

  • You're not from here, are you? Your characters may be from Kansas City or anywhere else in the world, but they cannot be from Bluefort. In fact, at least some characters will claim that until they looked for their new home, Bluefort didn't seem to exist.
  • Average Joes: While there are fantastical elements of Beyond the World We See, players will be ordinary humans with no unreal capabilities. That is, unfortunately, non-negotiable.
  • Something in common: Even if all of the characters come from vastly different walks of life, they will have two things they share in common: They're all new to the area, and they all like the Bluefort Morning Show on the radio. Put the latter in the favorites section on your character sheet.

Another thing to be noted is that I will be keeping a rough timeline of everyone's interactions with the world around them, to keep everything sane.

With that out of the way, here's the part you've all been waiting for: Character Creation!

Character Creation

I have a sheet for all of you to use. There is, however, something beyond filling out the sheet that you would all need to do. Namely, because the story revolves around discovery and secrets, I want you to PM me your character sheet alongside what secrets they have. You may by all means post your sheet or a link to it on the OOC thread here, but please keep your character's secrets private. The only one other than you that should know about them at the start is myself, the GM. That being said, if some secrets are easier than others to discover, that's completely fine.

Now, without further ado, here's a link to the sheet.

I hope to see you around!

Question: can I have a pair (a brother and a sister) move in to Bluefort? They will have their own personalities and character developments, and are entirely two different characters, but their secrets are linked to each other's. Or rather, they kind of share the same secret. I think it would be interesting. :3

i'll work on this tonight my dudes. i've been a bit busy bc i've put off too many assignments. i'll develop my character asap though.

First Memory:
Oscar's first memory is seeing his baby sister for the first time. The four year old boy was sitting in the waiting room with his grandmother, and after a long while, they were called into the room where his mother had given birth to Elizabeth. Brief biography:
Oscar's life was quite average. He didn't see his father often, maybe once or twice every two months, but he and his mother and eventually his sister got by just fine. He kept the same group of friends all through his education, even in university when they all went to different unis. When he had all the qualifications to be a jeweller, he started looking for places where there was a demand for jewels. That was when he found Bluefort. It had great houses, a good neighbourhood, and only one jeweller with an owner so old that he wouldn't be there much longer. Eagerly, he bought a two-story house with money he had saved, dedicating the bottom floor to his business and the upper floor as his home. He's been in Bluefort for four months now, and has been open for one of those months.

Education: Christian finished elementary and high school through fairly prestigious private schools, made possible by his family's money. He majored in architecture and graduated early.

Brief biography:
Christian’s life has been quite eventful, and not in a good way. Since their mother died, he has faced trials, ups and downs, and through it all there has always been one person that’s always been there to help and guide him through his path: his younger sister, Alayne. At eighteen he ran away, eager to create his own path in life and be with Alayne once he’s successful enough to support her. Misfortune fell upon them though, and the day he came back home was the day their father died, killed by an alleged attack of political rivalry. Eager to get Alayne away from such terrible environment, he sold his inheritance and tried to find a house somewhere in a safe and healthy neighborhood, and that was when he found Bluefort. Impressed by the prospect of a new start, he bought the house, with his only goal in mind to live peacefully.

Background
Familial Relations:
Mother: Allison de Avila- Houston (deceased, died of childbirth)
Relations with: She never knew her as she died when she was born, but she was often told she looked a lot like her mother.
Father: Charles Houston (deceased)
Relations with: She is quite intimidated by him, for the most part, as they have never been close.
Brother(s): Christian de Avila
Relations with: A brother she loves from the bottom of her heart. He has done a lot of things for her, and she only gets more and more eager to return the favor.
Hometown: Detroit City
Type of childhood: Alayne had a very sheltered childhood. She was barely allowed to go out, but when she was little, she didn’t mind it much.
First Memory: Sneaking out with her brother without permission. They always get scolded and yelled at afterwards, but she loved those times.
Education: Alayne was always enrolled in an all girl’s school, a precaution that Christian often claimed as stupid (mostly because he wanted the two of them to be in the same school). When their father died, she was the one who discovered his body, and was so shocked and grieved that she decided to take some time off her senior year and focus a little on painting. She is planning to go back on track once the new school year arrives.

Brief biography: Alayne had always been a dutiful sister and daughter. All her life, she just wanted their family to be whole and happy, and so she was saddened when her brother ran away from home. The day he came back was the best in her life, as well as the worst. Their father died from an unfortunate event, an alleged attack of political rivalry, and this time it has become inevitable, they just had no choice to leave for their safety. That was when they found Bluefort, an out of the way town, perfect to start anew. At this point she was planning to paint and set up exhibit sometime in the future. Her brother liked her paintings. All she wanted is to just make him smile.

Sweet! I'd like people to put their sheets in spoiler boxes so its easier to navigate the page, but its not required.

Bump, and a reminder that applications are still open! We've got four players, I'm willing to take in 6-8, so come on down and apply for the last two to four spots!

Oooh! I want to join! O: This sounds pretty cool. I've got to run in a bit, but can I send the character sheet in later?

Background
Familial Relations:

Mother: Mairead O’Connor. 50.
Relations with: She’s a fragile woman, well-intentioned but highly emotional and prone to crying, which is where David learned to speak so softly. He loves her dearly, but has understood since he enlisted that his mother simply cannot handle the details of his life. They talk on the phone often, but superficially.
Father: Joseph O’Connor. 53.
Relations with: Salt of the earth carpenter, taught David his craft. Rough around the edges but a very loving father. David is fiercely proud of his father, and though they don’t talk much, he very much looks forward to their visits when they go fishing together.
Brother(s): Johnny O’Connor, 22.
Relations with: Very friendly. Johnny’s a carpenter as well and David is secretly hoping they might work together someday.
Sister(s): Michelle O’Connor, 27.
Relations with: Strained. They were close once, but Michelle married a wealthy man who looks down on the rest of the family and has since grown distant. David loves her, but his pride is too hurt to reach out again.
Spouse: None
Relations with: n/a
Hometown: McCook, Nebraska.
Type of childhood: Money was tight and his parents were often tired, but they loved their kids with all their hearts. The wide open Nebraska countryside gave David and his siblings plenty of space to play and grow. It was a fairly traditional upbringing, meals eaten together at table whenever possible, fishing and climbing trees for fun, selling homemade crafts at church fairs. The money situation being what it was David never really expected to make it to college, and joined the army instead when he turned eighteen.
First Memory: Watching the same Muppets VHS tape over and over and over because they didn’t have cable in his house.
Education: Public high school, army training.
Brief biography: David joined the army as soon as he finished high school so his parents could have one less mouth to feed as fast as possible. He was a very pragmatic young man to begin with, having been raised in a no-nonsense home in the country, and despite having no personal conviction in the war being fought, in the army he flourished. He stood out in training and was well like by his comrades- they took to calling him “Doc”, both as a play on his name (D. OConnor) and as a comment on his cool-under-fire demeanor. He was honorably discharged at the age of twenty five after seven years of service, four spent in Afghanistan, having been promoted from Private up to Sergeant for valor on the field and bearing a smattering of honors including the purple heart. Upon returning home, he settled down in Bluefort to start work with a friend of his father’s, making chairs and cabinets. He’s a skilled carpenter, and after five months in Bluefort he feels optimistic for his future there.
