The year is 208 a.D. in the Roman Empire. Over two centuries have passed since the first incursions of Gaius Iulius Caesar into the Celtic lands of Britannia, yet peace is far beyond reach for its inhabitants. War has raged over the northern region of the island for almost a century by now, while the southern half is completely dominated by Rome. Since the campaigns of Iulius Caesar and his successors, Rome has crushed any attempt to stop its legions from claiming the island. But there are some that resisted, sixty years in the past, in a joint effort, the tribes of the northern regions of Valentia, the lowlands, and Caledonia, the highlands, were able to defeat the 9th Legion from penetrating into the north, fearing the clans would attempt to retake the south, the Emperor, Hadrianus, ordered a complex defensive wall to be built, separating the roman province from the northern regions. But Rome wouldn’t let this defeat be unanswered, as soon, in the year 140 a.D. another wall would be built, pushing forward into the north. Using this new fortification as an outpost for invasion, several attempts were made to penetrate into Caledonia, and the hostilities between the roman occupants and the Briton clans in the dominated regions are still raging to this day. The romans had no mercy for the Briton inhabitants, known for them as “barbarians”, the ones who lived outside the reach of Rome, the people that romans have been murdering and enslaving for centuries. The people of Britannia struggle to keep peace with the romans. Some try to adapt to the roman lifestyle for either convenience or fear, some are still waiting for their old clans to stand up and take down the Walls and retake the south. Some had the worst part. Not being killed by the romans, they are slaves hoping to someday earn their freedom working hard for their masters, or by their blades on the arena as gladiators for the entertainment of their masters. But now things have changed and times are harder than ever before, as a new emperor reaches the throne of Rome. It’s the end of the year 208 a.D. and the emperor is Septimus Severus, conqueror of Mesopotamia, victorious against the Parthian Empire, a merciless Punic warrior and remarkable roman strategist, admired by most of the roman military. He sent the legions to reinforce the wall, meanwhile the tension with the Briton clans that inhabit the region between the two walls rises, specially with a tribe known as Maeatae, who refuse to pay the taxes imposed by Rome, and as more men from the roman legion, African riders and Syrian archers arrive to reinforce the occupation forces, the briton natives feel harrased, and violent revolts are becoming more usual. Uncertainty fills the hearts of both romans as Britons, as it is yet unknown what are the plans of the emperor. But a massive invasion of Caledonia seems to be imminent.

Starting location:
The heart of the region between both roman walls. Also known as the final frontier of the Roman Empire. Treacherous forest region, until reaching the mountains near the northern wall, home of the Maeatae and some Scot clans. A great number of roman forces is scattered through the region, several roman camps and forts are found, and scout forces are constantly deployed to patrol the region, harrassing the native settlements as they are sent to collect taxes and capture dissidents.

Factions:
Romans
: Natives of the valley of Latium, in the Italian peninsula, they serve the emperor and are well prepared for battle. Not all romans in Britannia re legionaries, some are merchants from wealthy families, who seek to trade with native goods and slaves. Yet all are trained in the arts of war, as an educational tradition of the empire.

Syrians: Expert archers, sent from their dessert lands, far beyond the Mediterranean, to serve and aid the roman legion, some volunteered to fight for Rome, while others were forced to join their lines by order of the roman authorities and their local nobles. They can easily adapt to most weather conditions and terrains.

Numidians: North African people brought to support the roman legion. Expert riders, well trained for ambushes and skirmishes. Like the Syrian auxiliaries, some volunteered to Rome, while others were forced to join their lines.

Maeatae: Inhabitants of Valentia, ferocious warriors but under strong roman control. They inhabit the heart of the region between the two walls, and are constantly harassed by the legion, and forced to pay high taxes to the roman government.

Brigantes: They live right in the edge of the southern wall, under complete roman control. Mostly aggressive against romans but some seek to cooperate with them for convenience or fear. Mostly unorganized warriors. Many became bandits after the roman occupation. Experts in Guerrilla tactics.

Iceni: Once the one of the most feared clans among the southern Britons, the first to be conquered, now few noble houses remain, while their military traditions have gone lost for almost a century. Mostly slaves and workers. Few noble traders. Some fled to the north and live as nomads, and constantly in conflict with the native Caledones.

Caledones: Northern britons, ancestors of the scottish people. They live in the northern region of Caledonia, also known as highlands. Mostly farmers, but fierce warriors during times of need. They usually live on the forests of Eborakon, heart of the region of Caledonia.

Scots: Strongly related to the Caledones, inhabitants of the lowlands, some clans are under roman control, while others are free in the northern portion of Valentia, nearing the highlands. Mostly warriors.

Picts: known as painted men or painted ones, the mysterious people that inhabit the northern shores of Caledonia, far beyond roman reach. Mostly warriors, known for their fierce nature, they were usually seen in battle half naked and body covered in blue paint.

Equipment:
Romans and their auxiliary forces are always armed with short steel swords, known as gladius, and equipped with leather armor covered with steel plates in the torso and shoulders, but wearing a light tunic under it, short pants, and sandals, mostly to allow mobility. Legionaries use heavy rectangular shields, known as scutums, metal helmets, covering the head and with two metal plates covering the sides of the face, and javelins used for both hand to hand combat and as ranged weapons. Roman and Numidian riders usually use a lighter version of the scutum, a slightly smaller oval shield.
Britons usually wear wool clothing, while their war equipment mostly consist on bronze swords and hatchets with heavy oval shields. The noble warriors use heavy iron or bronze armor, covering the torso and heavy helmets. The use of throwing spears was common, and the skirmishers used to wield slingshots as ranged weapons, they were known for being effective and lethal, and even more common than the use of bow and arrow. Their cavalry used to be feared for the use of war chariots.
