As you step into the arena the viewing screens overhead offer you a glimpse of the playing field you will soon be engaged in. A desolate wasteland of abandoned buildings and rusty cars. Shrubs and plants have overgrown the sidewalks of the cityscape, and the pavement has grown cracked and crumbled from neglect. Lining the streets are towering office buildings and skyscrapers. The streets themselves are an obstacle course of potholes, plants, and abandoned vehicles.

Once you take your place in the designated circles you will become fully synced into the virtual playing field.

Kinra zipped out of the lobby excitedly, Calongáel drifting through the air at his side as he emerged into the arena. He cast his gaze around at the crowds with wide-eyed glee. This was a lot more impressive than an Aramaean gladiator ring, that was for sure. The sylvae boy smiled brightly up at the spectators, waving to a few of them as he floated on his way down to the waiting circle. He set down lightly, and readied himself to enter the virtual reality that was displayed overhead. They were not unlike the dreaming pools of the Grove, these machines, albeit with a very different purpose in mind.

He looked up to wave happily at his opponent across the far side of the arena, calling out to her with a grin. "Here's to a battle worthy of both of us! Calongáel and I will show you the strength of my people, and of the Elysian Vanguard, so I hope you're ready to lose!"

His vision flashed, and then the arena was gone. He was stood in the middle of the road in the derelict city, between two rows of looming skyscrapers in varying states of disrepair. A small forest of vines and weeds were growing out of the cracked tarmac and infesting the lower floors of most of the buildings, and running through the rusted corpses of a number of cars and one large overturned bus in the centre of the road.

Immediately, Kinra darted away from his point of entry, zipping up into the air and off to the side, through the window of one of the office buildings on the second floor. His building of choice was one that had been particularly afflicted with aggressive plant-growth, and much of the ground floor and the exterior walls were criss-crossed with entangling thorny vines. Whilst Kinra took cover with a vantage point on the street, Calongáel remained in the open, currently still in spear form and hovering forwards and up, ready to do battle when their opponent arrived.

Sarika also cantered out into the arena with her arms spread. The golden shawl that drooped over her shoulders was whipped off with one hand and thrown into the audience. She sank into a bow to the receiver, who all but foamed at the mouth in excitement. With a twirl, she faced Kinra, one hand on her hip, the other holding Thistle. She gave him just as bright a smile, holding the sword vertically in front of her face. "And I hope you're ready to be disappointed. Either way, Chiquito, I yearn to see you dance!"

With glee, she took a trot onto one of the waiting circles. The arena around her dissolved, replaced by the ruins of a city. She phased in just in time to see Kinra dart into one of the many dilapidated buildings in the area. Before she followed, she took in her surroundings, eyeing the narrow alleyways between the skyscrapers, where trashcans and garbage littered the area. She eyed the wild growth of the plant life in the area, but they didn't seem important enough to warrant a note.

Sprinting from her position, she made her way into one of the alleys and boosted her jumps with the wind at her back, making her way into the floor she saw her opponent fly into. She landed on the floor with a slight skid, sword held out in front of her threateningly.

"Corazon? Where did you go?" she sang.

With both combatants in the ring and in motion, the gong sounded to signal the start of battle.

Kinra wasn't difficult to spot in the room, hovering just off the ground with his hand pressed up against the wall - or more precisely, against a section of the large vine-plant that had the lower reaches of the building in its grip. As Sarika made her approach, Kinra channelled power into it, his mind becoming quickly aware of the full extent of the plant. With a great rustling and creaking, as the woman's feet hit the floor of the building, the vines clinging to the wall outside converged. A half dozen individual vines, thick and covered in thorns, shot towards her like lunging snakes, aiming to coil around her limbs and torso and bind her in place.

At the same time, Calongáel had responded to Sarika's flight, darting towards the building just as she did. The spear crashed through one of the windows as the vines were descending, thrusting through the air towards her left flank with the speed of a diving falcon.

Kinra himself remained stationary, his hand on the vines. He didn't require physical contact to manipulate the mighty weed, but it certainly helped.

"I'm right here!" he called, grinning in reply to Sarika's taunt. "And also behind you! And also incoming!"

Of course, he was careful to time his calls so as not to give the woman any warning as to the incoming attacks from her flanks. Better late than never though, right? He giggled.

"Found you!" cried Sarika, leaning forward for a charge. Before she sped forward, the vines shot forward in her direction, prompting her to dodge to the side to evade them. Just as she was attempting to run forward again, Calongáel barged in through a window, putting her in an awkward spot. She swept out of the window she had entered in and as her legs bent against the adjacent building, she ran her fingers against her gauntlet, lights spilling into the runes that lined it.

Instead of entering through the same window, she rushed forward and briefly ran across the wall, finding another to bash through, this one a hallway over from Kinra's current position. She needed a way to dodge both Calongáel and the vines, but she needed to figure out how good he was at controlling both. The other room was too closed in, but unless the spear had followed her, the hallway would force both to come down the same direction.

For Sarika to retreat out the same hole she came through would prove to be difficult, as the vines that Kinra had directed towards her had originated from that same point of entry. At Kinra's willing, the vines - already covering the exit to some extent, from having had to stretch across it to lunge at her - stretched themselves into a thick thorny barrier to bar her path. Their tips once more coiled towards her, in an attempt to catch her in their grip as she hit the wall of thorns and keep her there, thorns digging into her body in the process.

Kinra grinned at the attempted flight. "Leaving so soon?" he called tauntingly.

Calongáel too was not idle. Halting dead the moment that Sarika had evaded its path, unhindered by the over-swing or momentum that would have slowed it were it wielded in mortal hands, it spun on the spot to lunge after her in another forceful thrust. Even if the thorny barrier didn't stop her for long, for her sword could likely make short work of it, it might stop her long enough for the deadly spear to plunge straight into her back.

Sarika bit her lip as the vines closed over the window, then lashed out at her once more. Additionally, Calongáel was coming right after her again. With a sweep of her sword, she cut through the vines and flourished the blade to not only parry, but also knock away Calongáel. Given she had the chance to breathe, she swiftly ran her fingers against her gauntlet, lights spilling into the runes that lined it. The runes on the left side of the blade lit up as she held it in front of her, backing away from the vines and the spear warily.

Calongáel struck against the thin blade with an almighty clang, delivering a mighty blow that Sarika's wind-enhanced parry was just barely able to deflect to the side enough that the spear-point passed her by, likely sending a shock of force up the woman's arm at the impact. Kinra quirked a brow, impressed that his opponent had successfully guarded against the strike, then grinned. "Well parried!" He called, stepping away from the vine he was grasping. His eyes warily followed the glowing blade, keenly aware of how the closed quarters could work against him as much as in his favour when pitted against a foe seemingly focused on melee combat.

Seeing the skill with which Sarika was able to parry, Kinra judged a spear to not be the most useful form for Calongáel to take. At a mental command, the weapon briefly surrounded itself with light, its form shifting as it passed by Sarika from her deflection. It shrunk and broadened, transforming from the shape of an ornate spear to that of a circular ring blade. By the time the light cleared, the weapon was arcing back around, beginning to rapidly spin like a sawblade as it rocketed towards her.

Leaving the vine wall in place, Kinra then relinquished direct control of the plant, turning his focus instead to avoiding being taken off-guard by a shift to offence on Sarika's part. She seemed to be preparing something with the runes on her weapon, and it would be poor form to underestimate its potential. To that end, with a little smirk, the sylvae boy turned his illusory magics onto Sarika, slipping a veil over her mind to simply ... omit him from it. Had she no protections against such magic, to her, his body would shimmer and vanish from view without a trace. Then, he flit upwards and away, gaining distance from his last known position whilst using his flight to avoid disturbing any dust or debris that might give his movements away.

"Neat trick," Sarika spoke swiftly, keeping her eye on the spear. The vines, she could clip through with ease, but this transforming weapon was her main threat. She would have to figure out a way to stave off the spinning blade and attack Kinra. What an interesting challenge, thought the duelist, jumping in the air as the blade dodged for her. At the same time, she grabbed the switch on her gauntlet, one rune of three along the armor lit up completely. She pulled the switch, releasing the razor and the serum into her skin. The world around her changed a bit, slowed ever so slightly. It was easier to concentrate on her surroundings and the speed of Kinra's blade. When she landed, she lifted her eyes to look for the Grandmaster and found-

Nothing?

"Not funny, Corazon. Why are you running?" she goaded, attempting to spring forward into the room Kinra had occupied while keeping an eye on the blade, preferring to dodge rather than to parry the powerful weapon again where she could. Her heightened speed and interpretation from the gauntlet's boon was certainly helping.

"I'm not running," came Kinra's voice, projected from several metres to the side of his position. "I'm hiding. There's a difference!"

The ring blade kept spinning as it flew underneath her, coming to a swift halt after only a moment before reversing its path, driving towards her in the same moment that her feet touched down once more.

While Calongáel spun, Kinra began to gather power, building magic up in his core in preparation for another magical assault. Behind his veil of illusory magic, the sylvae boy started to glow softly, his eyes flickering with wisps of blue fire.

The speed at which Sarika dodged the spinning blade was uncanny, enough that it was difficult to keep up with for most humans. Kinra clearly wasn't human, so she had to wonder if he could keep up with her any better.

In an attempt to go around Calongáel, Sarika used the wind at her back to push around it. As soon as she heard the voice, she advanced towards that, wildly swiping through the air for a hit. "Oh, no more cat and mouse! Are you not a man?" she chided.

Calongáel was relentless in following Sarika and though her speed was sufficient to evade it, it didn't allow her a moment's pause. Once more, it reversed paths, chasing after her as she propelled herself away. Her swipe passed harmlessly through the air where Kinra wasn't. He giggled, and this time his voice came from multiple different angles around her. He himself remained stationary, at the edge of the room a few metres to her left.

"Nope!" He answered cheerfully. "But I am having fun!"

The Sylvae continued to gather power, his inner fire building further in intensity, to the point where his body began to get noticeably hot.

I'm going to need more than speed to defeat this child, thought Sarika, continuing to dodge the swirling weapon where she could. She tried to figure out where Kinra was, though she had a hard time with these kinds of tricks. She would have to smoke him out somehow.

As Sarika danced around the blade, she smirked. Smoke him out... or just get him in a tight corner. With a smirk, she flicked her sword upward, and the runes began to light up once more. It would take a while, but if she survived long enough...

Oh, she'd find him.

What worried her, however, was her diminishing speed. The speed boon only lasted a minute, and she would need another soon to help dodge this infernal weapon. Parrying was only out of desperation. I must wait, she told herself. I can do this.

Sarika would have less time than she hoped, however. Not long after her sword began to light up, he finished gathering power. By now, his core was ablaze with energy, and he flitted to the centre of the room, not far from where Sarika was moving. And there, he unleashed his gathered power.

Blue-hot flames burst from his body in a mighty explosion, tearing through the room as though a sizeable bomb had been detonated. The wispfire blew out the remaining glass of the windows and seared at the walls and floor, all-but incinerating the leftover furnishings and carpeting throughout the entire room. Should Sarika be caught in the blast, not only would her physical form be severely burned, but so too would her very essence be damaged.

The release of power shattered his illusion, leaving Kinra fully visible in the centre of the room, breathing heavily with a few beads of sweat on his forehead. Calongáel spun to a halt at his side, as he waited to see the result of his attack.

Boom.

Like that, Sarika saw the competition burn before her eyes. Or rather... through them. Her body rocketed from the window with the blast, looking startlingly similar to a blackened piece of bacon. Her sword clattered to the side with a screech.

Though traces of her clothing were intact, in all the woman had been seared through. She would not be getting up again.
