"There's been an accident on 34th and Broadway." The voice over the radio came in and Ben turned the radio up to hear a little better. It was crackling a little like it always did when they hit this part of town. Glancing over at his partner he shook his head. "Malfunction junction got somebody again. Don't know why the city doesn't just do something about that." By his standards it was crazy. With so many accidents it was nothing short of a miracle that so far only 12 people got killed in the last 4 years. Sometimes he thought it would be cheaper for the city and the citizens if they just paid for some kind of crew to come in and tear the intersection out. They needed something that wasn't a winding three way intersection.
When they arrived at the scene police lights were flashing and cars were stopped on all sides of the road. Some of them were slowly driving past as a police directed the traffic around the accident. Ben sighed and stepped out of the back of his ambulance. Walking around to the side of the ambulance he pulled a backboard out of a side compartment. "Mike you got vitals yet?" They were going with the first person they could reach and the next ambulance would be picking up the next available person.
Ben set the board next to the patient and then started to feel along their spine for any deviation and checked the hips for stability. Finally he slipped two fingers into each hand of the victim and he asked them to squeeze before moving down to their feet and asking them to push against his hands and then pull against them. After the check was done he nodded to Mike to help with turning the patient over on their side. "Julie call medical control and tell them we're treating with diesel. Need to get them to the emergency room asap." Glancing down at the woman he nodded to her question. "Yeah we got other Ambulances arriving to help with the others." Whatever make or model the vehicle was it certainly wasn't recognizable.
