Legends tell of a time where Dragons and Humans once lived together in perfect harmony. They enjoyed profitable trade and relations between one another, until the day that the King of the Dragons kidnapped and killed the daughter of the King of the Humans. Or so the legend says. Since that day, Humans have hunted dragons, and dragons have terrorized humans. Dragon Slayers became heroes greater than even the King's knights, and the Dragons feared them.

The Legends of Dragons and their Slayers
The village of Mead was quiet little fishing village on the outskirts of Askar's Kingdom, located right along the Oceanside. The were most famous for the homemade Mead, made by an elderly couple that seemed to have lived there for decades. Unbeknownst to them, a dark shadow was making their unassuming village its target. The animals in the area sensed the danger before the villagers and went strangely quiet. The deer scattered, and the dogs cowered. Before the Villagers had time to cry a warning, a dragon's screeching roar echoed over the village and the crops went up in flames.
"DRAGON!"
The villagers screamed and scattered. A warning bell rang out in the middle of the village. Two riders lept upon their horses to ride for aid, but the black scaled dragon caught them its claws, taking them into the air, and dropping them to their deaths. Its destruction was unmatched. The poorly trained spear casters didn't stand a chance against him

Merek ran quickly through the forest, the man weaving through trees and around bushes. He was nimble on his feet and moved with such grace and speed. As the man drew closer to the edge of the forest he heard the screaming before he could see the village. Merek had been tracking a beast of a dragon for several days now and he finally had reared his ugly head on the village of Mead. The man clenched his jaw and quickened his pace to a full sprint, heading toward the sound of the warning bells.

The villagers ran in every direction in a frantic chaotic state. The gigantic beast above them swooped into the city, using his massive talons to tear apart buildings. It was obvious that the dragon was toying with the villagers as he could easily burn the entire place to the ground with one breath. The shrieking continued and innocent people began to die. Men emerged to defend against the dragon but it was obvious that their soldiers were laborers who had picked up a weapon in desperation to save their home. The sound of a horn blew, the sound that a dragon slayer was approaching.

Merek burst through the forest, dropping the horn from his mouth and laid his eyes on the beast in the sky. "Devil" he scowled. The man draw his great sword and began to channel a strange power into his blade. "You're mine!" Merek began his advance.

The black dragon turned cruel black eyes towards Merek, almost seeming to smile at the challenge the Dragon Slayer poised. "Puny human. Challenge me if you dare." The deep voice echoed through Merek's mind. A talent of Dragons. They could speak telepathically, but unless the dragon allowed for two way telepathy the humans had to resort to physically speaking in order to return the communication.
The black dragon turns in his flight and aims for Merek. They were yards away from colliding when a smaller purple dragon appeared out of no where smashing into the black dragon and knocking him out of the sky into a nearby field. Merek could tell it was female by its smaller form and the elegant long horns on her head, where as the male dragons only had ugly stubs but were much larger in compassion.

The purple and black dragon scrambled for the upper poistion, snarling and fighting tooth and claw, occasionally breathing spouts of fire. Moments later the black dragon kicked off the ground back into the air. He only got a few feet before the purple dragon took hold of his tail in her jaws. He screeches in outrage and wrenches out of her grasp, dark red blood spilling on the ground, turning the grass black where it hit.
The purple dragon took back into the air after him, seeming to try steer and him away from the village.

Merek stopped in his tracks as the black dragon was bulldozed into a nearby field. His eyes followed their movements as he watched the spectacle of a battle between two giant beasts. What is happening? Merek thought to himself, unsure if the scene in front of him was real or not. His attention turned to the village of Mead briefly, for now it was safe but what was the purple dragon up to? Why had she chased the black dragon away, what would she have to gain? Merek gritted his teeth together, to him all he could see was two trophies waiting to be claimed. The man channeled the power into his sword once more and then hurriedly ran to where the two dragons were entangled in battle.

The Black dragon turned viciously at the purple dragon "WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!?" the dragon roared a telepathic message to her. "DO YOU NOT KNOW WHO I AM!?" The black dragon began to ascend once more and he dove toward the purple dragon with incredible speed.

The purple dragon, being smaller and more agile, waited until the the last moment and darted out of the way, flying into the air as the black dragon hit the ground where she had been with a satisfying thump. A trench was carved into the field by his body. She turned mid-air and began her next attack when a pair of screams drew her attention away from the black dragon. Two children had been playing in the feild of corn when the attack had started. Till now they'd been hiding by the black dragon's crash had revealed them. They were a mere firey breath away from his face.

The Black dragon drew in breath to snuff out their annoying screams when the purple dragon landed over the children, her shining scales taking the brunt of his fiery attack. When he ran out of breath, she lifted off, the children in her claws. She carried them close to her chest and dropped them safely into a thick haystack before returning towards the fight at hand. It's dragons like you that give our kind a bad reputation. She growls back at him.

Foolish drakaina.. humans do not care about reputation. All they care about is slaughtering us for our hides! The only way to stop them is to eliminate them before the come looking for us. It had appeared that the dragons had forgotten that a Slayer was on their tail.

Merek drew closer to the corn field, baffled by the actions of the female dragon. He sprinted quickly over to the haystack where she had lain the children, he found them huddled together, their eyes wide, shaking and petrified. The two children were shocked by Merek revealing their location, the jumped back from him but the man raised his hands in a calm motion, gesturing to them that it was OK. "You have to get out of here.. you will die if you stay here. On my count, run to the forest line. The dragons are busy right now and I will protect you if they head your way." Both children did not speak or move, they were clearly in shock and untrusting. Merek could sense their tension and to ease their nerves he pulled the horn from his belt to show them; the sign of a Dragon Slayer. The children nodded and slowly rose to their feet.

"One..." Merek stood, turned to face the dragons and instead began to channel an energy in front of him, in what felt like a wall. "Two..." the energy grew in diamter and height, it was clearly some kind of a protection spell to guard the children as they escaped but how did a mere human possess this ability? "Three. RUN!"

The black dragon whipped his head towards Merek, sensing his power. His maw opened with glee. A magical human. One that would feed the fire in his belly for days to come. He roars and pounds on the female dragon with a fury, trying to make sure she stayed down while he ate his prey. He lept into the sky and dove towards Merek, breathing burning flames at him.

The children dashed away, screaming as the dragon roared in their direction. Merek stood his ground, staring at the dragon, unwavering "give it your best shot, devil! You won't break my wall with your petty fire breath!" The energy began to envelop Merek as the black dragon descended toward him. The flames came first, crashing into seemingly nothing and dispersing in all directions against an invisible wall. The man knew that the wall would block magical properties, such as the dragon's breath, but it would not do anything against a physical force. The dragon was headed toward him, fire still breathing in his, and the children's, direction. Merek knew that he had to keep the barrier intact or else the fleeing kids would be fried before they made it to safety but there would be nothing he could do against the dragon itself.

I hope those kids make it out or my life will mean nothing..

Out of the corner of his eye Merek sees the little boy trip. His older sister grabs his arm, trying to pull him to his feet but he'd twisted his ankle and wasn't able to stand. She was too small herself to have a chance at carrying him. They stared wide-eyed and terrified as the black dragon's shadow loomed over them.

And then, a flash of purple crashes into the dragon from the right side, driving him into the earth. Both dragons were stunned by the powerful impact and lay for a moment, their wings flapping oddly as they tried to reorient themselves. The purple dragon in particular was having a much harder time getting back up than the bigger black dragon, who was already getting to his feet. HUMAN-LOVER! He snarled so fiercely that Merek could almost hear him audibly. You'll die like a rodent with the rest of them! He raised his maw over her exposed neck preparing to finish her.

"No!" Merek yelled as he heard the children fall and the black mass approached them. The man lost his breath when the female dove into the mass, clearly protecting them. Merek was dumbfounded, he couldn't understand what was happening and his head was beginning to hurt from trying to come to terms with the events unfolding in front of his eyes. He turned abruptly to watch the two dragons crash into the ground and a sickness filled his stomach as he saw the black dragon lift his massive body above the female.

Merek dropped his barrier and focused all of its energy into his sword. His sword began to illuminate a yellowish glow and was pulsing with energy. Merek dug his feet into the ground and did something no Dragon Slayer would ever think to do. Don't miss... Don't hit her the man thought to himself before he lurched forward and swung his sword toward the masses. Merek's sword came crashing down to the ground in front of him and as he swung, an immense wave of energy hurled toward the dragons.

The purple dragon's eyes widened and she curled into a tight ball, her wings stretching over her head. The black dragon took the full brunt of the attack. It burned through his scales. The black dragon screamed in agony and took off into the air fast as he could. Soon, he was not but a black dot limping across the sky.

The little purple dragon unfurled her wings, looking up that the dragon slayer that had seemed to have just saved her life. Or...perhaps, he was just taking the opportunity to hit Black while he'd been distracted. Her voice sounds in Merek's head. "Should I be thanking you or fleeing?" She asks, glancing behind him at the children which were being gathered by their parents, all of them crying with happiness.

Merek looked at the dragon wearily, he had depleted his mana stores and his energy was now low. The black dragon was by far the biggest he had ever faced and it took a great deal to create a barrier and a single spell to defeat him. You should be doing both. I do not have the energy to protect you from the rest of the villagers and you are clearly wounded. Merek refused to thank the female dragon for saving both himself and the children. He could now hear the family rejoice behind him and a tired smile consumed his face.

The man fell to his knees, his hands barely catching the weight of his body. The sound of the villagers regrouping with their makeshift soldiers could be heard behind him. Merek looked up at the beautiful creature before him, before collapsing to the ground.

Merek awoke in a soft bed with a young girl tending to him. She offers him a glass of water, a red flush to her cheeks. "Thankyou for saving us, hero." She says. "We've prepared a feast for you."

She hurries off to announce his awakening to the rest of the villagers. Outside, a feast had most definetly been prepared. Not just a feast but an entire celebration. There were lanterns strung up everywhere. Decorations of flowers, streamers and jewelry were strung over posts and the tables which sat in a large circle around a large fire. Roasted pig, deer, pies, ale, beer and a number of other delectable food items were set out across the tables. Music was being played by minstrels and children danced before them.

Strangely enough, right in the middle of it all was the purple dragon who'd risked her own life for their sake. Children sat on her back or slid down her neck. Other's had put rings of flowers around her horns. She sat still, every now and again letting out a snort of smoke to tease the children who'd jump back and then laugh and beg her to do it again.

"Our savior! You've woken just in time!" An elder man, whom Merek assumed was the leader of this village approached him and shook his hand heartily. "I'm Father Titus. We can't thankyou enough for how you risked your life for our village and children. Please, please join us." He gestures to the tables where everyone stood, waiting for him expectantly.

The man's head was pounding when he woke, his eyes struggled to open and were met with an intrusive light. "Thank you for saving us, hero" a voice he didn't know. "Hero?". He began to sit up and surveyed his surroundings, the young girl beside him was petite, her face young and her smile youthful. She appeared to be genuinely over joyous. The girl said something else before scurrying away but Merek was too lost in thought to hear it. "What happened? The last thing I recall was saving that creature.." the man scoffed at his change in language for the dragon and the realization that he had saved her. How pathetic, a Dragon Slayer coming to the aid of a Dragon, however; the dragon's actions were also unorthodox.

Merek forced himself out of bed and looked around the room for his belongings. He collected most of them without thinking but when he picked up his sword he studied it. There were new found abrasions in its steel and it appeared as if it was going to fall apart at any given moment. Merek had been using the same sword for awhile now and each time he imbued it with magical properties, it became weaker. Eventually the sword would break as it was not designed to withstand enchantments. Merek sighed, the weapon clearly only had one more blow left in it and then he would have to find a replacement. The man hoisted his sword up and sheathed it on his back before emerging out of the hut and into what appeared to be a party.

A man came dashingly toward Merek, grabbing his hand and shaking it. Merek barely caught what he had said, other than that his name was Titus and that he was now gesturing toward tables of people, food, and... and the dragon!? Merek's instincts took over and his hand reached behind his head, grasping the hilt of his sword. The noise of the celebration immediately came to a halt at the actions of their saviour, some villagers looked in shock, others in horror and fear. Titus took an alarming step back in a defensive matter, not knowing how to respond to the man's actions. "Wait.. wait, sir, please don't!" a child who was playing on the dragon had yelled, quickly jumping off of her and running toward Merek, only to be intercepted by a parent in a protective sling of arms and hands. Merek's grip loosened on the hilt hearing the child come to the defense of the creature but he kept his hand there, his face grimaced and he looked at Titus "What is this? What do you mean saviour, why is there a dragon here?" The child yelled at the once more, "because you both saved our village!"

Ametrine had turned her head, looking over her shoulder at Merek. One of her wings was stretched out and from the looks of things the villagers had done what they could to tend to the injuries. She was as vulnerable as a dragon was going to get, yet she made no sudden movements, as if wary of the children around her.
I am not your enemy. Nor are these people my enemy. She lowers her head, blowing a puff of air over a child's head and ruffling their hair. She looks back up at him. Perhaps we could call a truce tonight, Dragon Slayer. For the sake of these people.

"I....I know you're a Dragon Slayer, Sir. And you have full right to be nervous." Titus says. "But there are good dragons in this land. Ones who have no desire to cause the humans any harm. Ametrine is one of them. She was even helping to put out the fires and repair our buildings while you were unconscious. Let there be peace tonight between you too. I beg you." He pleads.

Merek heard the words of the dragon echo through his head as he watched her play with the children. It was clear that the villagers were not afraid of her and even tended to her injuries. For tonight only then. Merek echoed back to her. He full heartedly knew that if he attempted another energy attack on her that it would also mean his own life as well. He had rested, yes, but his mana stores were not prepared for another attack and it would mean sucking the life out of him.

Merek sighed, listening to Titus ramble on in his direction. "Ametrine?" he thought to himself, "So the creature even has a name.." the dragon was becoming more humanized to him with every waking minute. It was obvious that Merek was not your average Dragon Slayer, he possessed a strange power but also acted differently than others. He had attempted to save innocent people in lieu of killing both dragons while they were distracted and wasn't instantly killing the injured Ametrine now, despite the pleas of the villagers. There was something different about this Dragon Slayer and it was obvious that Ametrine could win his trust somehow.

"Fine." Merek finally spoke "Tonight there will be peace between Ametrine and I". He had used her name. "My name is Merek, thank you for tending to me and preparing this feast."

"You are most welcome!" Titus pulls him over the the table and the feasting begins.

By nightfall every one of the villagers was either drunk on mead or retired to their homes to sleep. Throuought the entire celebration, Ametrine had not made a single threatening move. In fact she'd held up conversations with various people even exchanging stories. At point, she'd begin bobbing her head to the tune of the music. Merek had never seen a Dragon so...domesticated.

With only the two of them left undrunk or not asleep, she looked over at him. "You had a chance to kill me with that attack you used against the Prince. Why didn't you?"

The feast was enormous and the villagers clearly knew how to celebrate. As the children played with Ametrine the adults laughed over stories while clinking their mugs together and singing hideous songs. Merek laughed at how jolly the men were and how easily embarrassed their wives were. Soon the children went to bed and the adults continued well into the night with their antics. Many of them questioned Merek, where he was from, how old he was, where did he learn to fight, why did he hunt dragons, to which Merek barely answered any of the onslaught of questions. He had fancied himself a mug or two of mead, but not enough to stupefy him.

==========
Merek glanced at Ametrine as she poised him her question. "If it wasn't for you the children would've been killed." Merek paused, "I would've been killed as well. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time. I hadn't imagined you would have stayed though and that changes everything." The man turned to look at her, his unforgiving eyes meeting hers. "Why did you attack that dragon, the prince you said?"

Ame nods her head, a curious guesture, coming from a Dragon. "Prince Crone, the next king of the dragons. He hates the humans more than any other Dragon I have met. He wishes to start a war and wipe your kind out...but such a war would leave us extinct." Her voice echoes with a sad tone in his head.

"I fought him because he attacks innocents and children. And because the rest of my kin are to frightened to stand against him. For good reason." She looks up at the starry sky. "He is the largest and most powerful Dragon yet to fly these skys."

Merek listened intently to Ametrine, it appeared she was being genuine and he was beginning to find it difficult to be weary of her. He let out a sigh and fell backward, arms behind his head as he lied in the grass and stared up at the clear sky. "He was the next king of Dragons? I've been tracking that fool for what feels like weeks.."

The man thought silently to himself for a moment, if Ametrine and those children hadn't been there, he would've had been able to use his full ability on the prince. Blast he thought. Merek had missed his big pay day it seemed. It then dawned on him and he sat up abruptly. "I wasn't the only one tracking him, Ametrine." Merek now looked at her, his face covered with worry. "We've put these people in danger by staying here. I know you shouldn't trust me, I am a Dragon Slayer, and honestly I don't know if I trust you but if we don't leave now they will come here and they will attack if they find us here." Not only did Dragon Slayers hunt Dragons, but in the event they encountered each other out in the plains they wouldn't hesitate to kill each other either. Less competition.
