Fanservice

Imperatus Rex

Semper Imperatus
We have all seen it, good luck finding a jrpg game without it. This concept has been widely present in the entertainment industry seemingly since it's birth, but what does it achieve?

Fanservice, to sum it up, is almost always referring to the trope of "servicing" fans with attractive images such as brief upskirts, shower scenes, and various states of partial nudity arguably to the point of "soft-core porn" (or ecchi, as anime viewers might call it).

Rather than give a detailed long post on my personal opinion, I want to know what the community thinks of fanservice elements in general. Perhaps it is even present in roleplay writing. Ultimately, do you think that fanservice, or general low-key erotic "rewards" for the viewer, add anything of value? Additionally; what is the threshold of fanservice being a waste of time and/or malicious to the plot and personality of something (for example, a series being only noticed for the sexy characters rather than the other elements such as plot)?

Yes, fanservice of men (hot guys with revealing armor) is also relevant. I look forward to seeing your opinions, and I apologize for not being very active lately.

Hahahha, rewards?! For watching the show/content for that long, or are they admitting it's a bad media inlet?!

Yeah, I appreciate the body, but I'm not into fanservice. I'm not an otome mate, I'm just a swavvy pervert. Fanservie isn't my thing, it's just...Yeah, I look, only to scoff at it.

Do you hear music?

Fanservice is okay and I don't mind it in anime or even role-playing but it isn't really necessary and it doesn't really "reward". I can tolerate, and even sometimes mildly appreciate a bit of fanservice once in awhile, if it's used tastefully and not pushed straight into your face. It can add to the personality of something, and can be shown without damaging the plot if done right, but at the same time, it does a lot to a tone of something.

If overused constantly and seems out of place it's just weird and distracting. If I seriously needed to see constant panty-shots and showings nude, larged tiddie women in my anime I'd just watch an ecchi, or actually, classic hentai, and if I seriously needed that kind of stuff in my role-playing I'd just join an 18+ website. Stuff like that just gets old to me if there's nothing else (like actual content) keeping my interest.

There's just a time and place for these sorts of things, y'know?

I know.

My time and place is Fall, alone in my room with SG in a new tag.

Fanservwrice in the non sexual sense I can and do fully appreciate, because well. I don't need to be reminded of.

"Oh hey man she likes".

" Dude does this look cute?!."

"So who are you dating/going out with!?"

"What are you gay?! She's hot. Unless your gay."

"Unless your gay"

"Not your type?!"

"My tyyyype!!"

Gloom has manifested. Is anybody else glad weekends and school/work breaks are a needed part in this Manko 1st world society.

Oh and the web. Because I find allotta bastards that relate my dislikes of...Imperator, wanna bro hug?

If the 'fanservice' is in context, I'm cool with it. Kill La Kill and Mabinogi Duel is a good example.
I'm not really a fan of the other kind of fanservice *cough* *cough*, and I don't think it really achieves anything, other than to maintain a certain type of viewers. It just disrupts a sense of flow of the story (i.e. pacing), and I consider pacing to be one of the most important elements in storytelling.

So your emotion towards this is how I feel about filler.

I think fanservice is a type of filler. In any case they're quite similar in that they don't advance the story in any way.

Edit: and yeah, I don't like fillers either. :p
Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh. I fully understand.

Ah, sweet. I don't really get or even think that they have an appeal. But some mothers do have em mate.

That honestly depends on the type of show or game it is. If it's something serious or is very storyline based, a bit of fanservice can be annoying, but it is tolerated. If the media uses fanservice as filler, I'm not very interested.

However, a show or game based on fanservice, catered towards a certain audience and is made for the specific reason of fanservice.
...

I mean, I'd watch it during certain times.

But it's honestly up to the viewer.

Yeah, Lucy.
I agree it's well it's for wankers. #fanserviceforwankers I hadn't thought of story-serious based games. Which is why I stopped playing video games i had forgotten about them.
Why have fanserice when you can go straight to the porn...Haha what do the viewers actually connect to the Charas?!

Yes. Yes it is. The "romance" genre tends to be rather infamous for the sheer amount of pseudo-pornography it will pump out on a whim. Especially among hormonal teenagers that still confuse feelings of intense lust and infatuation for bonafide care and love.

Technically speaking, fan service is everywhere. Everywhere.

I take it on a case by case basis. It depends on what tone is attempting to be presented. If it wants me to take it seriously, or if it's a scene of extreme violence, I find it just distracting at best and downright inappropriate at worst. (I mean I really don't want to have uncomfortable sexual feelings if someone is being devoured by zombies and the animators decided to show off a nice view of the victim's ass.)

On the other hand, if it's a relaxing scene, or a comedic scene, it doesn't bother me normally. It's just something you kind of have to learn how to live with, because human sexuality is a common topic of storytelling. It's a common part of, well, being alive.

Ah, I certainly know your perspective on "Slice of life" settings, and I have to agree that the romance in those situations generally are simply low-key (and often poorly written) erotica.

That is a situation that I would find it unsettling, you are presented with solemn situations that regardless try to slip in light-hearted erotic undertones.

That is what many people are saying, as some fanservice is simple softcore pornography. There is plenty of fanservice that isn't, but there is always that one piece that makes you wonder if it is just deliberately pushing the boundaries of NSFW.

Dude why is this year's fanservice underage it makes me feel, that the animes we watched aren't meant for us.
You are referring to the "Loli" trend? Yeah, people seem to be attracted to underage characters so fanservice is often incorporated. I don't support it at all, but some people insist it is different from pedophilia. That trend has existed for quite a while though.

Oi, mother fucker. They think it's different, is it an insist or arre they trying to be smooth about their disease?!

Also, I hate Dark and Edgy as much as I hate Light Smooth. #fuckingbeesmonarchy

Dark and Smooth forevermore man.

This "trend" has been going on since at least the dawn of civilization, probably older than that.

Also, I'd like to take this moment to remind that someone can enjoy a fantasy without wishing to perpetuate it in the real world. At the end of the day I dislike it, but I'm hardly going to associate it with the actual act until evidence proves as such.

The whole concept annoys and disgusts me.
