Help with a certain scene in a romance novel (Warning: Sexual Content)

In my romance novel I'm writing, the two main characters end up in a homosexual relationship. Of course, this already brings up issues and obstacles for them to overcome, but the biggest one for Satoshi, an anti-social, extremely shy boy, is his past. And his body constantly reminds him.

In the scene before they break that final barrier in their relationship, Satoshi takes his shirt off to show the other character, Lucas, his scars. His body is covered with them. Burn scars, cut scars, you name it. Satoshi believes that they make him ugly and weak, but Lucas--after overcoming the shock--insists that he is beautiful and strong, especially since he's finally opening up to somebody.

The next scene is where things get difficult for me. After Satoshi finally feels he can fully trust Lucas, he tells him he is ready to go all the way. Now, the parts leading up to sex aren't that bad for me, but I want to write this scene as an emotional and heartfelt moment, not an erotic one. I don't want to use words like "dick" or "fuck". Those really take you out of the mood. If anyone can help with this, please do!

Maybe you could try not focusing on their actions but on what feelings and emotions they evoke. Write about how it all became that way and how all of their work and trust has let them do this. And you can use euphemisms if you don't want to use the word "dick" a lot. Focus on why they're doing what they do- is it for love, trust, hope in new beginnings? Whatever it is, write on that.

That helps so much, thank you! If you don't mind me asking, what are some good euphemisms to use?

I honestly have no idea. "Entered" springs to mind for the initial penetration, but otherwise I'm drawing a bit of a blank.

I am by no means a connoisseur of romance novels and as a whole have very little experience with them so my thoughts on this may be entirely off the mark of what you've got in mind for this scene but it never hurts to try.

If you're planning on writing the entire scene of intercourse rather than fading to black, the best way that I can think to go about making it less erotic is to limit your descriptions and as Kin no Keifu said; focus more on the feelings and emotions, even reactions, that those actions end up evoking rather than on the actions themselves. While intercourse is most often perceived as something erotic, making it more personal to the characters in question and less perfect or 'porn-like', will likely help to tone that down a bit. Obviously, a lot of this will depend on the characters but things like having them move slowly through the scene and talk to each other (be it praise, or even just checking to make sure everything is okay/they're still good/still want to continue/etc...) could help with that? Again, really depends on the personalities of the characters/the nature of their relationship.

You can also suggest what is happening and let the reader fill in the blanks for themselves; If Character A was to move down Character B's body, resulting in Character B letting out a moan it can easily be inferred as to what is happening without having to go into great detail about the act and also without using the word 'dick'. I don't have any good alternative words to 'dick' to suggest but here's a list of very bad ones, because they never fail to make me laugh.

Hopefully, this isn't too NSFW. It certainly wasn't my intention to write it that way :emoji_sweat:

It's perfect, thank you! I couldn't think of what the characters could say, but your examples help a lot!

The personalities of the characters are as follows: Lucas is the dominant, fun-loving guy with a caring side. He can be a bit aggressive and careless. As for Satoshi, he's a reserved, shy, and silent type. He has a very traumatic past that caused him to spend most of his life in complete silence, not talking unless absolutely necessary. Throughout their relationship, Lucas brings him out of this silence and depression with his fun-loving side.
Just in case you wanted to know. :p
