Innocent Monsters

Mari looked up from her lap and turned to Kenny. her eyes where pricked with tears but her face was blank otherwise. she stopped singing and covered her face with her hands, expecting to cry but no tears came.

Gently, the creature grasped Mari's hands and pulled them away from her face. He stared at her, calm and concerned.

Mari stared at his face for a moment, taking in every detail. "Have I done something wrong?" She asked, a little ashamed.

She watched, fascinated. Kenny seemed to be the only one who could really get through to Mari; he was so gentle with her. Suddenly, Aratani felt a sharp pain in her chest, like she missed someone. She had a slight memory of someone being this gentle with her, but she didn't know who. She couldn't dwell on it though, the headache was already blooming, mixing toxically with the sting of the jab. She let out a slight gasp as the pain in her arm swelled, far more than any normal jab.

Mari smiled a genuine smile. "Okay," she nodded and let go of his hands before heading over to Hamano. "How do we pass this level?" Mari asked her. She wasn't sure if this really was a video game, but at this point she couldn't rule anything out.

Hamano looked up at Mari as the girl approached. She tried to appear nonplussed, as if all the singing and crying and sounds of pain weren't getting to her at all, but she was obviously shaken. Getting back into her strategizing comfort zone was just what she needed. "Well, we appear to be genetically modified. Not surgical, but down deep DNA modified," she said, looking down at her hands.

"This is permanent," she added softly, ears drooping out either side. "But," she rallied, "That said, we're probably going to be drop shipped somewhere. And set on a course to accomplish something, once they have us in the shape they want us." She brightened slightly, tail curling and uncurling behind her. "My guess is that we're going on a field trip soon. Somewhere near the ocean."

"Oh," Mari's tail flicked up. "Thats good, maybe we will have a chance to escape."
Before Hamano could reply, one of the scientists came in, ushering everyone to their mattresses. "Lights out! Everyone on a mattress, I dont care if you share one just get in one." She was obviously stressed.
Mari went back to her previous mattress next to Haruto and practically fell asleep straight away. Haruto had already been asleep for quite some time and didn't appear to be waking up anytime soon.

Hamano doubted it, given the injections most of them were given earlier in the day. And wherever they went they'd stick out like a sore thumb, bunny boy and all. But she shrugged and lay back on the mattress as instructed. She guessed they'd all see soon enough! Vague ponderings of whether the fish boy would sleep in his tank or a bed rose in her mind, but quickly blew away as she closer her eyes, and fell asleep.

Aratani curled up on a mattress, cold, uncomfortable and unable to fall asleep. After a while, once she was fairly sure she was the only one awake, she got up and wandered to the room where they'd had their jabs. She fingered the bottles and microscopes on the counters, and rummaged through the cupboards, before pulling out a large file. She leafed through it, stopping on one page. It was covered in neat, printed text in a language she didn't understand, with her name at the top. She stared at two images, one taken when she was completely human, and one that she assumed was of what she looked like now. It was so strange; she had no idea how much she'd changed.
Quickly, she stuffed the papers back into the cupboard and left the room, stopping in the corridor. She did it without realising, and ended up staring into space, lost in thoughts that she forgot as soon as she conjured them. Subconsciously, she sat on the cold floor and hugged her knees, blinking softly into the dark.

She turned her head at her name, quickly standing up. Then she showed her hand in greeting and smiled slightly. She wanted to speak, but she knew there was no way she'd be able to after whatever the scientists did to her.

Kenny's head inclined in Hamano's direction when she spoke. Being genetically modified made more sense than being operated on, because the latter would result in them being in much more discomfort than they were now. If they did get dropped off somewhere, where would that be? In his case, the ocean was conceivable for obvious reasons.
He was about to turn in for the night when he could have sworn he saw Aratani and another boy, Haruto, leave. Sighing, he walked out and searched the halls, eventually spotting them just outside another room. Kenny slowly approached, smiling in greeting, holding a bony hand out to the boy.

"Oh, hi there," Haruto stared at his hand but didn't shake it. after a moment of silence he spoke up, "Uh, we should explore for clues. If there are any doors that are open, go in them and maybe we will find something?" He shrugged. "Night is probably the best time to do this,"

Nodding, the creature started down the hall, glancing this way and that for any open doors. Despite being dimly-lit, Kenny could still see well, probably due to his new form. He picked up the faint sounds of people talking and made a mental note to steer clear.
Coming to a room on his right, he checked to see if the coast was clear, before entering. The wall opposite the door was lined with computers. Seating himself at the first, Kenny pressed random keys, and the machine booted up, its motor practically silent. The logon screen appeared, a bright blue sky background with fluffy clouds. Below the user icon, a text box had a blinking cursor and the words 'Password Required' inside.
Kenny sighed. 'Of course.'
Not bothering to look at the other terminals, he stood and quietly exited.

Risina's eyes fluttered open, she yawned loudly. Her head raised and she hit it against the wall, groaning, she slipped out of the comfortable bed and looked around for any scientists, thinking they would hurt her again. Risina's fingers curled, and she looked around, "Where is everyone..?"

She tapped Haruto's shoulder and lead him to the room she was in before. Then, she opened the cabinet and pulled out the file, handing it to him to have a look at. Each page had some information, cuttings, and photos about and of each of them (she guessed this, as she still wasn't entirely sure of how to read it).
