Innocent Monsters

Haruto spun around and looked through the files.
It was more drawings of hybrids like them, information on their weaknesses, strengths and uses.
What did it mean 'uses'? what where they going to do to them?
he put the files down, not wanting to read anything in detail. he looked around the room and something on the wall caught his eye, a map. it had a big red circle on it, presumably where they would be shipped. he went closer, and found a little leaflet pinned to a bulletin board next to it.
it read 'AWBSTON' in big letters next to a picture of some tall buildings. the inside read:
Awbston is a small city near the ocean, known for its gangs and criminals. not many people live there due to its bad reputation.

She reached out and fingered the red circle... Awbston... It sounded vaguely familiar to her, like she would've known exactly what it was before her memories were somehow wiped. She still couldn't read any of the text other than the name, but the picture on the leaflet didn't seem very welcoming. Then, she turned to rifle through some drawers, coming across one that was locked. She got down onto her knees and turned her head, using her right appendage to pick the lock. To her surprise, it worked, and inside the drawer was a pile of fabric - clothes, in fact. 'These must have been ours,' she thought, looking down at the cheap, papery dress and trousers everyone here was wearing.

After some time, Kenny found the room where Haruto and Aratani were, looking slightly downhearted. He noticed the bulletin board and moved to get a closer look. The information about the abandoned city on the leaflet caused his stomach to knot up.

Hamano's still just sleeping. Her ears twitch and her hands come out in pawing motions at the air as she tackles some challenge or another.

"Lets just go back to bed before someone finds us," Haruto said hastily. The thought of Awbston was somehow chilling, but he couldn't figure out why.

Nodding and tiredly sighing, Kenny practically bolted out of there and back into their room, finding an unoccupied mattress in the far corner. He crawled in and pulled the thin blanket and sheet over himself, resting his head on a lumpy pillow. Despite the discomfort, he was out in seconds.

She nodded, fingers lingering on what she didn't realise were her clothes, before she closed the drawer and locked it again. She tucked the file back into the cupboard and quickly snuck back to her mattress, lying down. Suddenly aware of how cold she was, she curled up tightly into a ball and tried to stop herself shivering.

Haruto noticed Aratani frantically shivering and sat down next to her. He put his arms around her in a quick, tight hug before going back to his own mattress.

((Oki it da morning now))

(But, he's amphibious, and doing that will make it seem I'm copying another creature like this. If they go through any more transformations...I'll consider it.)

Hina walked into the room, fake grin plastered on her face again, and flicked a switch, turning the lights on suddenly.
"Alright, so I have a couple things to say this morning," she looked down at her clipboard, "first of all, no going through cabinets. Anything kept in a cupboard or drawer, particularly a locked one, is strictly confidential, and thus should be left alone. Second, everyone must come for their jabs," she glared pointedly at the one person who hadn't had theirs, "third, no running off through the facility, and fourth, on the same note, no attacking or injuring the staff. Now, eat up, I'll be back soon." Some other people followed her in and placed down identical bowls of what could only be described as grey sludge, before the children were left alone again.

Tentatively, Aratani picked up a bowl and sniffed it. Then she sniffed again, frowning. Strangely enough, this sludge was giving off no smell at all; she doubted even those with animalistic senses of smell could get anything from this. Carefully, she scooped up a little with her spoon and put it into her mouth. It was a lot thicker and gluey-er than she had expected, and still had no flavour at all. She likened it to how it must be eating cement, but nevertheless continued to eat.

Hamano was awoken by the feeling of someone staring daggers at her. She scratched her butt and curled deeper into the thin excuse for a blanket until eating was mentioned.

She sat up, ears straight up and hair a mess. She looked at the bowl of questionable sludge, then looked over at Aratani to see if she died suddenly or anything after eating it. It certainly didn't seem appetizing, but her tummy rumbled as she saw the girl eating.

Kenny started awake when the lights went on. His eyes darted about the room, eventually landing on the froced-grinning Heena. His already pounding heart sank when she mention no walking through the halls or looking through cupboards. If they couldn't do either of those things, how else were they going to obtain information?
A bowl of grey goop was put down beside his bed. The creature glanced at it with a disgusted wince. He looked around at those who were eating it, relieved they weren't vomiting or having allergic reactions. Reluctantly, he sighed and placed the bowl on his lap. Pulling the covers around his thin shoulders, he ate his first tasteless spoonful.
