In a roleplay, people enjoy being the center of attention. However, personally, I think you need to be involved. While being in the center grows your character, it prevents other characters from growing. Just being involved makes certain that all parties can grow. Some would argue that both is necessary, as at least one character needs to be the center in order to be the root of a roleplay, but that just depends on the circumstance. I have seen roleplays where nobody is the center, and it ran just fine.

I think it depends on the character really. Some are better without being the centre of attention, some are better as the centre.

Depends, i personally enjoy it more when my character bends the narrative through their effort than having a center point just handed to them on a silver platter.
