Merlion, mysterious founder of the Corbeau Society and head-hunter.

Name: Merlion
Age: 32
Species: Human
Place of Birth: ???, Lutetia
Nationality: Lutetian
Occupation: Current 'Leader' of the Corbeau Society. Monster Hunter.
Current Residence: Currently lacks a place of residence.

Noteworthy Skills: Merlion is a skilled alchemist and swordsman. He is able to concoct potions, given enough preparation time, to deal with any situation. Without them, he is nothing but an above average human swordsman with an unnatural ability to regenerate from all but the most lethal of wounds.

Appearance: A handsome-if-dour looking man, Merlion is a tanned, dark-skinned individual with dark hair, brown eyes, and a prominent scar over his eye. He stands at 6'1, and weighs a couple hundred pounds of well-crafted muscle.

Personality: A serious, soft-spoken man; Merlion is more often than not quiet and calm in the face of any situation. His natural charisma makes him look more thoughtful than stern, but his no-nonsense attitude does not buy him many friends. He is fatalistic and pragmatic at heart, although hints of a once fondly-held optimism sometimes force his hand into doing something that does not make tactical sense...Like founding an order of monster hunters after his previous family was killed by monsters.

Weapons/Equipment:
  • The Quill - A large, silver-edged greatsword; the quill was his original master's weapon of choice, and has been reforged to fit Merlion's hand. Numberless nicks, scrapes, and dings mar the blade, giving it a long and storied history.
  • Alchemical Kit - Merlion is constantly outfitted with an Alchemy kit that he can use to further prepare potions and elixirs for both himself and his allies. He carries a bandolier with a number of 'standard' potions, as well as the tools and resources to make some more.
  • Standard Bandolier - Merlion's standard bandolier includes: Healing elixirs, which encourage cell regrowth at the cost of exhausting a user; Stamina elixirs, which draw out excess amounts of energy and adrenaline at the cost of exhausting the user later and potentially shortening his or her life span; pain-breaker Elixirs, which dull the sense of pain to nothing; and heightening elixirs, which heighten a person's natural senses at the cost of temporarily dulling them after the potion wears off

Name: Alicia DeRoux
Age: 23
Species: Human
Place of Birth: ???
Occupation: Former Noble, Apprentice of the Elysian Vanguard.

Noteworthy Talents: Despite being only an Apprentice, Alicia has quite a number of noteworthy talents. She is skilled in the use of swords, can cast both Water and Ice magic, she can cook, and knows how to play several musical instruments, she can ride a horse, she is talented in the arts of calligraphy and is an avid reader, and she is trained in formal Aeloran etiquette...What do you mean most of those are useless?

Appearance: An attractive woman with cropped, brunette and unusual yellow eyes. Alicia is lean and fit, due to her constant training, and she stands at an above average Six foot flat. Her athletic build means she is somewhat lacking in certain areas, but she makes up for that with her pretty face and her generally pleasing demeanor. Since leaving Aelora, she has shown a preference for wearing armour and military garments; but she has a certain fondness for the fineries of the world. She constantly keeps a single necklace from her old home world; an ancestral locket with her family's sigil on it, and the family motto inside: "Valour, in all things."

Personality: Alicia is a noble and kind hearted individual, with a preference towards honour, lawfulness, and dedication. She is easy to approach due to her generally open and unabashed disposition, but some people comment that her nature can be overbearing and off putting. She is quite intense when it comes to issues of personal honour, and her somewhat prideful nature makes it difficult for her to admit she is wrong. She has a certain intelligence about her that means she is informed on most things, and that generally means she has an opinion on them, as well. She is stubborn and hardheaded at times, which can be both a boon and a bane for her friends and allies. She is, thankfully, quite a social being; which means she often attempts to surround herself with people.

Background:
Alicia was born in an Aeloran city to the DeRoux noble lineage. While many would expect the first daughter of a noble house to pursue more gentile pursuits, Alicia proved that such a path would never work for her by her stubborn nature and her fascination with the blade. It was at one of her older brother's fencing lessons that she first became hooked on the movements and intricacies of swordplay, and her parents soon learned to regret the decision to let her watch, as she began to practice herself. Due to their loving nature, they insisted she get proper lessons, as opposed to practicing in secret and in private. By the time she was eight, she was trumping her brother and was the apple of her instructor's eye.

Of course, a noble daughter could not just be a swordswoman. In fact, she had to be so much more because of her love of the blade. She learned everything you might expect from a Noble daughter, and excelled at them all. She could cook, she could sing, she could play seven instruments, and she could fence masterfully all by the time she was twelve. Combine that with an already blossoming beauty, and the early signs of magical attunement, and it was quickly becoming clear that the DeRoux's oldest belle would be a thing of immeasurable desire in her later years. Sadly, it was her perfect nature and desirability that would eventually lead to her and her family's downfall.

By the age of eighteen, Alicia had become an extraordinary person. She was confident with blade and had begun to grow talented with magic; she was beautiful and desirable; she had no shortage of feminine talents; and she was a scholar, having authored books on Swordplay and Tactics. Suitors came out of the woodwork to claim her hand, but all were swiftly denied. Any that lacked the pedigree were turned away by her parents, and any who had the pedigree but lacked the talent to win her heart were turned away by Alicia's sword; as she insisted on only marrying someone worthy of her. One day, a nobleman's son approached Alicia and insisted on the right to duel her. With no reason to turn him away, Alicia accepted and thoroughly trumped him. He challenged her again, and lost again; swearing vengeance upon her for the 'unforgivable slight'. Alicia thought nothing of it, of course.

By her twenty-second birthday, Alicia experienced the wrath of the would-be suitor. He had spent the last few years spreading rumours about her family; and soon enough her brother went missing with a vanguard of troops. The suitor claimed that her brother had fled and deserted the city, and when her Brother's unit was found killed -sans him- the rumours started to flow in the city. Alicia and the DeRoux family of course rejected them, but lacked any proof to quash the rumours. It was on her twenty-second birthday that the nail was struck into the DeRoux coffin though, as a group of assailants attacked the DeRoux compound.

Normally, such an attack would be repelled by the city guard. A combination of dissatisfaction with the family and hearty bribes kept them away, however. The attackers purged through the halls, killing house guards and servants with brutal and ruthless efficiency. Alicia and her parents held out in the Main hall with a handful of guards; and when the Suitor's house-knights began to flood into the compound, Alicia found a glimmer of hope sprung up into her chest. This was of course cut short when the Suitor himself greeted one of the attackers, who had captured one of Alicia's younger brothers. The Suitor slit the young boy's throat, and pointed towards the main hall. Alicia swore violent revenge, but her parents discouraged her, leading her towards a secret escape. She wanted her parents to come with her, with any other survivors, but they refused; insisting that her escape would be impossible if they slowed her down and chose not to hold the line.

After the betrayal of her family’s noble house was complete, Alicia quickly found herself the last surviving member of her line. Her skills in combat and magic were enough to keep her alive, but the vast numbers of her assailants meant her only option was to flee the city of her birth. She rode from her home, chased by a vast horde of would-be assassins into the ancient forests that legend said was once a fey court.

In the dark evening forest, she made her final stand. She’d managed to trick some of her assailants, and had slain others; but the tides were turning upon her. She could beat out any one assailant, but every so often they’d get a knick in here, or a slight wound there. It was grating on her stamina, and as the mob started to advance past the chokepoint, things looked bleak. She reached into herself for one last gasp of magic when…

…The world vanished.

She blinked away the bright lights of the day, confused by the sudden lushness of the world around her. In the distance she saw some strange city’s walls so unlike her home-city, that it mystified and dazzled her. With the last dregs of her strength and the last drips of adrenaline fading; she slumped into unconsciousness; awakening several days later in the care of a doctor, and a Seer. In this strange world, she could do naught but recover and struggle with her own failings. The seer offered her an alternative to petty revenge; revenge that would be impossible on her own. She offered apprenticeship to the Elysian Vanguard; an apprenticeship that would offer her purpose, and true strength.

Tl;Dr - Alicia was once a noble from Aelora who was betrayed and whose family was slaughtered. By pure chance, she ended up in the care of a Seer who offered her a chance to join the Elysian vanguard. She took it, with designs of strength, purpose, and maybe some day, revenge.
