Prologue
"Setting Out"

The Melding. It was a time of crisis, a time of chaos. One moment, you were going about your normal life, then the next thing you knew, you were either thrust somewhere completely different, or found complete strangers and unfamiliar worlds surrounding you. And before you could fully comprehend this, robots attacked, capturing anyone they could get their hands on. Some fought, but none reigned victorious; in fact, the only real hope for survival was escape.

And escape you did. In the conpletely random displacement, you found yourself within a frozen tundra, surrounded by snowy mountains amd thick forests. It was easy to flee the robots from where you were, the machines unequipped to handle the climate. Into the forests or into the mountain pass...you had a split-second decision to make, and in the end, you found sanctuary.

Those of you who fled into the forest came out the other side in a small community of monsters. Despite their fearsome appearances, however, the locals proved to be incredibly kind and friendly, offering you refuge in the Snowed Inn and treating you as if you had always been a part of the community. Their hospitality, and the cozy little wooden houses strung up with festive lights and wreaths, made this little wonderland the perfect home away from home while this Melding situation played out. In time, travellers and wandering merchants made their way here, giving information about the outside world, from the latest treachery from the Doctors behind all this, to whispered rumors of a Resistance underground, to even what lay our beyond Snowdin. And then they would be off, on their way to the mountain pass to do business in Snowpoint.

But as the days went by, you started to notice something...off. The number of merchants and travellers started decreasing, and rather than trade stories and gossip, they did their business and fled off without another word, avoiding even speaking of Snowpoint. What was going on?

Finally, it seemed someone had an answer. A rather unusual duo showed up just yesterday: a young woman in all red and elegant blonde ringlets in her hair, and a tall portly fellow with an equally yellow mohawk and clothes very unfitting the weather. They said nothing, but hung up flyers around town:

HELP WANTED

Strong and brave mercenaries needed to escort a caravan to Snowpoint City!

Handsome reward upon completion!

Experience preferred but not required!

Arrive at Grillby's at 2 pm tomorrow for more information!

Well, it was now 1:45, and there was no doubt something interesting going down in Grillby's soon. You might want to make your way over there, no?

Those of you who escaped into the mountain pass found yet another forest on the other end, but fortunately immediately after your long excursion you arrived in a tiny city nestled deep within the snow. Snowpoint City welcomed you with confused yet open arms, primarily due to a young woman named Candice. As you quickly learned, she was a Gym Leader here, which in her homeworld is considered quite the honor, and she and her family were more than happy to give lodging within her very own Gym. Despite the chill, the people here were kind, and life was peaceful.

Unfortunately, things took a problematic turn very quickly. The local harbor reported fierce storms and sea monsters making travel by sea all but impossible. With the city's primary source of trade eliminated, they had to turn to merchants coming in through the mountains...but despite Candice personally getting into contact with some elite businesswoman, nothing has arrived in days. With food starting to run low, Candice, determined to keep her city free of starvation, set out into the forests with her Pokemon companion Abomasnow in order to figure out what was going on.

Three days later...she has yet to be heard from.

It's a worrying situation, and for the most part it is quite easy to fall into a feeling of despair over it all. But there seems to be someone who will not take this turn of events sitting down. One of your fellow refugees, a lovely young woman by the name of Iroha, has requested a meeting of you all in Candice's Gym. It may be best not to keep her waiting. After all, this could spell life or death.

Ness

Ness wasn't one who could be considered a mercenary, but he was worried about Paula. He did know how to fight and maybe he would be useful to everyone in the area. He took a deep breath and went to Grillby's looking for who wanted the help. " Excuse me, is the person looking for help here?"

Paula

Paula had found Candice to be very helpful and she felt terrible that she went out alone and hadn't come back. She needed to find answers. She wondered with her teddy bears in tow to the gym. "I'm here to help find Candice."

"He better not expect me to do all the work..."
The woman's name was Hilda and she was waiting for her friend. She knew she shouldn't be angry because a lot of people didn't have the pleasure of having their friends around when the Melding happened, but with some stroke of luck her she was with a few familiar faces around her.

Well not now, now. For the time being she was alone and waiting. Hilda wasn't a mercenary far from it, nor did she like to get her hands dirty, but considering the circumstances maybe even her not very helpful hands were good enough?

If there was one thing Angel hated it was this damn cold. She couldn't have been transported somewhere nice and warm when the whatever the thing was called happened? But no, of course not, stuck in the coldest, snowiest place around. Angel was literally freezing her ass cheeks off in this place.

Not to mention of boooring this place was. She was happy for the roof over her head but come on! At least some excitement! Anything! At the news of Candice's disappearance Angel tried her best to hide her excitement. Yeah it was a bummer Candice was missing she was cool and all but this meant that something was finally happening in this place!

Heading to the gym Angel was curious to hear what they had to say.

As the minutes melted by like winter's snow, Kaze remained rigid and stoic, standing like a statue in the corner of the Grillby's. After a quarter hour, he had become closer to an item of furniture than a patron; he didn't speak, he didn't drink, he didn't smile. He was part of the scenery. He was the background. Watching.

"I take it you too are here for caravan..." Kaze muttered, breaking his silence and drifting back into sight. "Historically, I have considered mercenary work beneath the Ninjas of Hoshido, but..."

With the Melding taking place, things were obviously not the same. There was no telling what was happening to those that he knew, whether they were close relatives or former classmates from the Officers Academy. As if the war weren't enough, this happens. By a string of good fortune, however, he was able to keep in touch with a few familiar allies even in this ridiculous crisis.

Despite all that, some traits remained intact and strong with him.

❝ Don't mind if I butt in now. ❞ Claude nonchalantly entered Grillby's fashionably late with his bow slung on his back, or rather kept a certain someone waiting. He was aware of the fact that they were setting off on important duties and the likes, however...

❝ Ah... c'mon Hilda, you think I forgot about meeting up here for the caravan escort? ❞ Awkward pause. ❝ Okay, so I got a little sidetracked with exploring the surrounding area. Force of habit, I swear. Might be useful to have some background knowledge in the noggin for later. ❞ It didn't take long for him to admit that. It was a given that anyone who knows him would figure that he was up to something.

Besides that, he took notice that some others were already gathered here, presumably for the caravan. Well... considering the situation that the Melding's caused, they needed all sorts of help to get things done.

❝ Alright, we can make this work. I'm sure of it. ❞ He says once he glances over those that were present. Assuming that the trip wasn't too hectic, it'll probably be fine. ❝ Let's take the time we have now to get familiar with each other, shall we? No point in working together if we can't remember names to faces. I'm Claude von Riegan, most of the time I have a plan to pull off. Hoping that my tactician mind is useful even in times like this. ❞

Things were really messed up right now. Because of the Melding, he has no idea where the rest of the Phantom Thieves are at and the properties of the Metaverse happen to bleed into what was supposed to be the real world. Why else would he appear like this instead of his more realistic cat form?

Maybe that was a blessing in disguise, since it did give him a free pass to his Persona and allowed people to understand him. So when he caught word of mouth about the unnerving decline of resources and the gym leader's disappearance after a risky gambit, there was no way he was going to sit around and twiddle his paws! He had to do something, or else what was the point of being a Phantom Thief anyways!?

Morgana didn't waste any time to rush to the Snowpoint Gym. In times like this, taking any chance to get a better outcome was super crucial, and hopefully Iroha had some nice pointers to share.

❝ Mona, reporting in! Wh-... ❞ The thief made an abrupt pause. This wasn't how a Phantom Thief should conduct themselves. He can't be as loud as Ryuji... Besides, it was only him and two other people that were waiting about.

❝ Ahem... erm, are you two here for what I think you're here for? ❞ The "cat" sounded embarrassed, trying to redo his act here.

There he was. "You got to be more careful, Claude. Who knows what's lurking outside in the snow!" Hilda replied to the man. Him and his plans... "Well you're here now I guess, and with proper introductions too I see! Well I'm Hilda Valentine Goneril. I don't have much to offer so I'm just going to be along as moral support if that's okay with you all."

Spotting Morgana caused Angel to forget the cold for a moment. "Oh my God who are you, you cute little thing?" She got up to him and started to squish his cheeks together. "Aren't you the cutest cosa de gato I've ever seen! Who's a cute kitty? Who's a cute little kitty!"

Grillby's was filled with the lively chatter of the local monsters, enjoying food and drink, or a nice game of poker for the canine patrons. There were only a few humans there, besides the newcomers, and all four sat at the biggest table in the establishment. Two of them were the duo from the day before, and two others were people that certain members of their group would recognize.

The Snowpoint City Gym was every bit as cold inside as out, as Candice had equipped it with a sliding ice gimmick to challenge her opponents further. Like Angel, her bottom half was rather unprotected from the elements, but it didn't seem to bother her all that much.

"The food!!!" The larger man rubbed his hands together. "I've been waitin' all day for this!"

The waiter brought out trays of food, which for the most part appeared...normal. A few items were a bit strange, such as a burger covered entirely in glitter, but that was probably just typical fare for the locals. Probably.

"I should probably introduce myself," the young lady said, having to raise her voice as Caspar and her companion started scarfing down food. "My name is Karin Kanzuki, head of the Kanzuki Zaibatsu. This is my bodyguard, Birdie, and my two temporary associates, Anna and Caspar von Bergliez...though it appears some of you already know each other."

"Thumbs may not be necessary with the yunomi I have," Iroha said, noting Hoku's discomfort. "I know Western cups are rather different, but I keep both in case Master prefers one over the other." She moved to the small stovetop, getting to work. "It will be ready shortly."

"Oh, thank you." he blinked then. Guess he was having tea after all.

❝ Hey now, I got to take some risks here and there... but alright, I'll try to be a little more careful. By that, I mean not wandering off at random. ❞ Claude scratched the back of his head when he got that response out of Hilda. It was a given that he would do things like this, but with their situation, he could afford to dial back on the risk-taking. The tactician perked up to see that there were a few more familiar faces here. Well, when he said about reuniting five years later with the rest of the Officers Academy students, this isn't what he imagined it would go at all.

❝ It's good to see you both, really. I wasn't exactly sure if I would see anyone familiar after what happened, but I guess fate proved me otherwise. Not exactly the type of reunion I expected, but we can make this work. Haha... ❞ He made some quick casual conversation with Anna and Caspar, relieved to see them again.

❝ Huh? ... well, I haven't set foot in Snowpoint... so I have no idea if anyone we know happens to be there... but knowing our old classmates, they're out there. ❞ They had to be. Claude held that thought to himself when Hilda asked him about anyone they knew possibly being at Snowpoint. He didn't want to say too much without the knowledge for sure. All he knew was that things were not so great over at Snowpoint, and that was from simple wandering near the routes that would lead up to that town.

That aside, Claude turned his attention to Karin, who introduced herself and her connections to some that were present here.

❝ Yup. Just so happens that Caspar's an old classmate from the same academy that Hilda and I attended five years ago, and Anna's a merchant that's helped us out with her wares. ❞ Claude nodded when Karin mentioned that they were familiar with her associates. ❝ Anyways, I take it that we have enough people to assist you here, right? ❞

❝ WAAAAAH! H-HEY! I AM NOT A CAT! STOP TREATING ME LIKE ONEEEEEE!! ❞ Morgana yelled in a tantrum, wiggling to break free from Angel's grasp. He was definitely a human, he knew he was, and definitely not a cat. It wasn't long until he was finally let go, falling facefirst with an "oof" to go along with it.

Picking himself off from the floor, Morgana perked up at the sound of tea being prepared soon, clearing his throat to calm himself.

❝ Oh, tea would be super nice right now. Thanks ma'am! ❞

" Many of my friends got separated. I just happened to be walking her home when we got separated. I was leaving my friends, Jeff and Poo. We just came from beating a powerful enemy. That being said, thanks for the food."
He would take a piece of his favorite meal, steak to make him feel better.

Paula

Hey, can you hear me, Hoku? I also can communicate telepathically. Mostly with my friend Ness.... this tea looks nice. She would take some tea and smile happily, waiting for an answer.

"Yeah, I'm doing great! I wound up in this big city by the ocean where everybody fought everybody. I think there was an old gang there or something? I dunno. The mayor was HUGE though. You should've seen the guy!"

"Yes, Metro City is quite a colorful place," the girl said with a nod. "Caspar held his own against man and machine alike. But of course...he was no match for me. Ohoho!"

Caspar frowned. "Aw, c'mon! You were doing all those fancy moves! The brawling I learned was for war, and-" He stopped, sniffing the air. "Hey. Is that...?"

"The food!!!" The larger man rubbed his hands together. "I've been waitin' all day for this!"

"Sounds like you found the perfect place for you Caspar!"
Hilda replied with a smile. She was quite jealous that he had found himself next to an ocean. That meant some sun and warmth. He was probably the only one who thought it was a good idea to head out here into the snow. Even so they were lead to the table where refreshments were waiting.

Dusting off the glitter Hilda took a bite from one of the burgers. "Yeah! We're actually from the same place! Funny how we'd meet up like this." Came her reply to Karin.

Well mostly tried to hang them out to dry as far as coin was concerned, Hilda thought to herself. Even so a familiar face was nice to see in this snowy landscape. She took another bite from the burger before wiping off some more glitter.

Angel giggled at Morgana's explosion. "Sure thing! And I'm not the great and powerful Angel!" He'd find that her grip around him was surprisingly strong for a woman of her size but he finally managed to wiggle free that garnered another chuckle from her. "What did I say? Super adorable."

"Chacal? I just told you my name. Some Pokemon have the ability to speak telepathically, I'm not quite sure why, but I have the same ability?" Hoku replied with a confused tilt of his head.

There was a beat of silence for only a moment.

"Does me speaking freak you out?" he asked then.

"Oh, thank you." he blinked then. Guess he was having tea after all.

@Yun Lee @Lucky @Jeremi @Gummi Bunnies

"I've seen a lot of weird shit," Angel replied turning her attention back towards the Pokemon. "You're definitely not the freakiest thing I've ever seen."

Anna smiled cheekily. "Well, with all these old faces, there are firsthand accounts of just how good my wares are! Though this time, what I'm selling isn't weaponry or armor."

"Then what's even the point..."

Karin smiled at Claude, nodding. "Indeed! And you all look quite capable, which is even better!" She looked to Ness then, her smile seeming to soften just the tiniest bit. "I have friends out there, myself. I know they can handle themselves, but..." The businesswoman blinked, coughing as she caught herself. "A-as I was saying, we will be going right to Snowpoint. I'm sure you're all aware of the situation: merchants have gone in, never to be seen or heard from again. We're going to escort Anna's wares through the pass, clear out whatever is causing these problems, and hopefully establish better trade for Snowpoint. Take this time to ask any questions you need. I would prefer we set out right away."

As Iroha said, the tea was ready promptly, and poured out into whatever cups you preferred. "We will have to make due with sugar packets," she said, putting a small box of them on the table. "But if what I would like to do goes well...then perhaps we will have more to work with."

"And what, exactly, is it that you intend to do?" From behind the others gathered, a man spoke up, as if he had suddenly appeared there. Dressed all in black with piercing green eyes, he observed Iroha carefully.

"If you wish for your own demise so dearly that you would venture out into the unknown, then you can at least prepare yourself for what awaits you."

Hilda raised her hand. "Do you think we're going to have to fight? If we I think it's best that I'd stay in the back you know? I'm not much of a fighter so I'd just be in the way..." The pink haired girl said this with a straight face as her massive ax clanged softly on her back as she walked around.

Angel's eyes lit up when she spotted Hubert. "Oh who ordered the snarky goth? I like his attitude! He's kind of right too," She replied taking a sip from her cup before continuing. "What are we supposed to do really?"

Ness

" I'm already all ready to go. Whatever is causing these problems are damaging friends as well as residents in the city. They need to go and we can certainly do it. I bet whatever it is won't be easy to defeat. I only have one question. How long is it going to take us to get from here to there as I need to know what food to stalk up on and make a quick call to my mom and dad from a phone."

@Takumi @Jeremi @Yun Lee @Gummi Bunnies @Sark

Paula

" Do you know what await us so that we can prepare properly? I got teddy bears and a frying pan, but I would love to know what other weaknesses this monster may have," she told him with a smile.

@Takumi @Jeremi @Yun Lee @Gummi Bunnies @Sark

"Pfft, what? You're joking right?" Through a mouth full of food, Caspar snorted. "Hilda, you're, like, crazy strong! I bet you could take down a whole battalion by yourself and not even get scratched!"

"So that thing's just for decoration, eh?" Birdie said, eyeing the axe.

Karin, meanwhile, turned to Ness. Such a shame that a little boy was somehow more competent than her own persinal hires... "If nothing goes wrong, this trip shouldn't be more than a day, going and then returning. It took less than that for those residing there to get there in the first place...but of course, that was because they were running from robots." Karin took a moment for a sip of tea, then continued. "As for ourselves, I plan to set out within an hour after this meeting. We have an additional supply of rations and weaponry, so you won't need to spend too much. Take this hour to prepare...and then we embark."

Iroha kept herself composed in the presence of this stranger, not batting an eye as he spoke. "Venturing out into the unknown is our only option at this point," she replied. "The people of Snowpoint are almost out of food. Either we take a chance and wait out the storm at sea, or we act."

"Hmph." He sat down beside Angel, arms crossed. "I hate to say it, but you have no idea what you're up against."

"And you do?"

He nodded. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hubert von Vestra, Minister of the Imperial Household and personal aid to Her Majesty, Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg. During this Melding catastrophe, I was separated from my home world and my emperor. In my endeavors to return to her side I eventually found a companion. He was on his way to this city, looking for someone he'd been separated from, as well."

There was a sudden rattling in the room, cut short by a loud klink as Iroha set the tea kettle down. Noting this, a slight smirk appeared on Hubert's face, and he continued. "We allied ourselves for the time being, but unfortunately..." The smirk vanished. "What awaited us in the forests was a beast. No, a monster. A demon from Hell itself. There have been few times I have truly feared for my own life, but this devil rattled even me."

"And what...what of your companion?" Iroha's voice shook slightly.

"He held the beast off, and urged me to come here and warn you all of what lurks out there."

"I do hope, sir, that you don't think this will stop me." Iroha stood, a fierce determination in her eyes. "My Master is out there, and I must find him, no matter what."

"Oh, believe me, miss." Hubert smiled.

"I have no intention of letting that monstrosity live, nor do I plan to sit here while my emperor is still out there. Though I must warn you: my companion and I are both powerful. With his brute strength and my own dark magic combined, we were nearly unstoppable. But the fact that this devil was able to nearly fell us both...well, suffice it to say that we will need more than teddy bears and frying pans if we hope to stop it."
