Name:
Elan Martel
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Species: Human

Bio/Synopsis: Elan is the first royal born heir of Victor Martel, his eldest son by Queen Oriana. Elan is technically first in line for the throne should his father pass on, and in many ways is a strong candidate for the role. He is benevolent, intelligent and charismatic, as well as honourable. Some, however, see him as weak. He lacks the political mindset to manipulate people, and his benevolence and honour are both traits that could easily be used against him by more ruthless opponents. There is one other notable way in which he is not ideal - producing an heir may be something of an issue for him. He has no interest in women, and though he has conceded that should he ascend the throne, it's a duty he must perform, there are those that remain unhappy with such a man taking the throne.

Elan has led a privileged life, but has also had the importance of duty, honour and responsibility impressed upon him. He has not lived idly, and is a capable warrior, tactician and leader on the battlefield - though thus far he has only been tested in war games, as opposed to real conflict. He is less comfortable in a courtroom, his preference for honesty and directness being out of place in the maze of innuendos that is court etiquette.

Whilst Elan is not fond of politics, he has embraced his birthright, and has ambitions of continuing his father's legacy by bringing the kingdoms of Eclipse closer together.

The wider public and those less close to court are not aware of his personal inclinations, and as such, he is fairly popular with the people (though many see him as soft, a fact not helped by his smooth and fair features).

Elan's pet - a gift to the court from a wealthy merchant who had acquired it during his travels - is a pseudodrake. A small dragon the size of a cat, Lothwyr is incredibly loyal and fairly intelligent. Lothwyr cannot produce fire, but he does have a set of vicious claws and teeth, hard scales and a bad attitude.

Close Relations:

  • Personal Attendant - Aaron Vernerson, a northlander of middling birth and several years Elan's senior. He is incomparably attentive, and a close friend and advisor.
  • Personal Guard - Callisto Alinari, a middle-aged Lyran man with a past both in the military and in mercenary work. A royal guard for the past decade, Callisto is fiercely loyal to his charge and his High King.
  • Personal Guard - Hildegarde Augustin, a Westron woman in her twenties, daughter of one of the High King's best knights. Her father taught her the sword, and she joined the royal guard as soon as she was able, having inherited her father's admiration for the royals.

Name: Matrim Vance
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Race: Araucollen/Lyran Human

Bio/Synopsis: A mercenary operating out of Solstice, experienced despite his youth. Mat does regular work with both legitimate merchant caravans and smuggling operations. He likes to consider himself morally grounded, and - despite his line of work - avoids killing where possible, resorting to lethal force only in self defence. Of course, that doesn't always work out, and anyone who works as hired muscle for smugglers has to be fooling themselves a little to think they're in any way righteous.

Mat was born in a poor family. His father, Regino, was a retired Lyran soldier-turned-mercenary, and taught him the sword (and various other forms of combat) from a young age. His mother, Helen, was a waitress at the Songbird tavern in Solstice. Regino lead a group of mercenaries by the name of the 'Swords of Solstice', based out of the capital, and was well respected by his men. A man of solid morals, unlike many mercenaries, Regino used his military training and discipline to forge the Swords into a respected - if small - company, most of whom held similar values to him. When he was sixteen, Mat was inducted as an official member of the company - despite Helen's protests - and fought at his father's side for several years.

When Regino suffered a mortal wound fighting against a bandit ambush, however, the Swords suffered for his loss. His dying request had been for his second in command, a man named Cormac Thorne, to take over the company until Mat was experienced enough to lead. And so Mat in turn became Thorne's second in command at seventeen, despite his youth, to work and learn alongside him.

In the wake of Regino's passing, however, Thorne began to display a different disposition. The lure of greater profit led to the Swords taking on jobs that their former leader would have passed over: criminal work that stopped short of banditry, but not far off of it.

In the next year, a grief-stricken Helen passed away of illness, leaving Mat with only his mercenary comrades as family. His discomfort with their increasingly dishonourable practices has only grown, but as of now, they're all he has.

Name:
Nessa Rouke
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Species: Blianian Human

Bio/Synopsis: Nessa is the eldest of the Rouke siblings, but was passed over for leadership in favour of her younger brother due to the tradition of the head of the clans being male. She does not resent her brother for this, however, as she has little interest in politics.

She is fiercely protective of Keegan, who (despite any evidence to the contrary) she firmly believes is in way over his head. A capable warrior, she personally oversees the training of her clan's soldiers, though in many cases she wisely defers to the superior experience of the veteran soldiers that make up their military leadership.

Her prized possessions are her blade - named Solstice - that she herself forged with the guidance of a local master smith, and her warhorse, Agrona.

Name:
Ren
Age: 17 (ish)
Gender: Male
Species: Blianian Human

Bio/Synopsis: Ren was born in a ramshackle ‘village’ in the Beyond, the barren tundra to the north of Noire. The Beyond is a land of exiles and outcasts, criminals who are deemed by their clans worthy of banishment. Those sent to the Beyond seldom live long, and those that do seldom get along - forming small and barbaric tribes that are both too few in number and too busy fighting amongst themselves to pose any threat to those that exiled them.

Though he doesn’t remember much of his mother, the woman who raised him told him that she was an outlaw who died during one of the many tribal conflicts in the Beyond. That woman was a Warden of the North named Iona, who found him - at the age of five - abandoned in his village, and took pity on him, taking him with her with the intent to find someone to care for him back with her clan.

The Wardens of the North are a small group of rangers and scouts who patrol the northern reaches of Noire, to provide advance warning of raids from the exiled tribes.

Though her initial intent was to take him to a safe home, Iona grew attached to the self-sufficient boy as she travelled southwards with him, and he seemed eager to prove himself to his wondrously heroic travelling companion. Ren ended up travelling with her for many years, learning the ways of the wilds and picking up whatever skills he needed to support her. Though he lacked a natural inclination towards combat, he picked up other skills - like medicine, map-reading and cooking - quickly.

Three years ago, however, Iona was injured during a skirmish with a small raiding party that ambushed them. Though she successfully fended them off, she lost the use of one of her legs after a particularly brutal axe blow. Ren was barely able to save her life. Since then, she has returned to her home village, and retired there. Ren lives with her there, aiding her in getting by with her injury.

Name:
Alarin Beringar
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Species: Westron Human (Fey-Touched)

Bio/Synopsis: From the day that Alarin was born, he was the favoured child. Traditionally minded, his parents saw in him the heir that his sister Henrike - over a decade his senior - could not have been. His childhood was one that blended increasingly demanding expectations with the luxury of his parents' favour.

There is little doubt that he would have been groomed into the perfect candidate to carry House Beringar's name, were it not for an incident that took place when he was just shy of his teen years. He was accompanying his father on a hunting trip, when he became separated from him in the woods. Lost, he rode for what felt like hours, long past the point when he should have re-emerged from the trees, until he stumbled upon a quiet clearing wherein lay a pool.

By this time thoroughly exhausted, Alarin dismounted and went to the pool to drink and rest. He saw in the idyllic waters not himself, however, but another. An androgynous figure of ethereal beauty and bright eyes, who reached forth from the depths to brush his face. Then, darkness.

He awoke some time later, beside his horse. The clearing and the pool were gone. Within minutes, he heard the sound of hooves, and his father and their guards rode into view. But Alarin had been changed. His eyes, previously a muted hazel, now swam with all the colours of autumn. From that day, things were never quite the same. Though he returned to his duties, he no longer embraced them. Though still sharply intelligent, he now sought to spend every free moment in the open air, surrounded by nature. He neglected his studies to hold lengthy conversations with songbirds.

There are many who question his capacity to serve as an heir, and they may not be wrong.

Alarin himself is a pleasant youth, seemingly unsullied by ambition or politics despite his training. Those who know him well know better than to assume him naive, however. His education has not fallen at the wayside despite his shift in interests, and he is far more canny than he lets on. The boy has a way with words that few can rival, to the point where some attribute it to his 'gift' as surely as his affinity with plants and animals.

For all his oddities, Alarin is still a Beringar.

Name: Kian Avell
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Species: Araucollem Human

Appearance: Kian sports a head of usually-unkempt dirty blonde hair of medium length, falling just past the tops of his ears. His features are soft and still somewhat boyish, though his fair complexion is usually marred by dirt or bruised, detracting from his appearance. His build is slender, and he stands at the moderate height of 5'9". His soulful eyes are a pale blue-grey, and seem to pierce beyond the surface of those he meets.

Bio/Synopsis: Kian is the bastard child of an Arluanus lord, by a common whore. His mother died some years ago, leaving him to fend for himself in the city. A thief of no small skill, he consistently confounds the most secure locks and well organised guardsmen. He's uncannily dexterous and perceptive, and few are those who can lie to him or escape his notice.

He has recently been recruited to the ranks of House Arlanus's agents, under the command of Nero Arluanus.

Name:
Nero Arluanus
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Species: Araucollem Human

Bio/Synopsis: Nero is second cousin to Leonitus Arluanus, first son of Octavius Arluanus (cousin to Marcus Arluanus), grandson of Regulus Arluanus (younger brother to Pluto Arluanus). For the last three generations of his family, they have loyally played second fiddle to the head of the house, providing counsel and support to their brothers or cousins.

Nero is a fiercely intelligent and charismatic man, always equipped with a disarming smile and a witty riposte to seize control of any given conversation, and with a commanding presence that can dominate a room.

As one of the family members more closely involved in dealings with their intelligence network, he is also amongst one of the more powerful figures in the family - even if not entirely officially. There are those who murmur that he has more potential sway than is proper, but he is by all appearances just as loyal to the house head (and his heir) as his forebears.
