Sean's Application of Awesome

Sean E.

The Joke-Spewing Storyteller
Hey there! The name's Sean, it's a pleasure to meet you. The campaign idea sounds fantastic, I've been wanting to play a non-magic medieval game and this sounds just wonderful. I'm not quite sure how accurate the things I posted in Andrin's backstory are, so if you have any concerns or would like me to fix him let me know and I'll do it immediately. If you need anything else as well, I'll be willing to answer anything you may have. Thanks for reading and considering my application, and I hope I can join in on the awesome idea! Ciao.

Name:

Andrin Deterius

Gender, Age:
Male, 19

Role (Family):
King’s Guard- They will first take part as an army against the Guardians, but eventually become a task force that patrols the Kingdom. Think of them as a universal police force, but with military grade equipment. If you are a King’s Guard, you are (NO EXCEPTIONS) Andelorn. This is because the King’s Guard is only loyal to the crown.

Appearance and Personality:
Appearance: Tall and slightly athletic, Andrin was quite charming in is younger years. He has shoulder length dark hair and eyes as blue and piercing as ice. A scar stretches from the top left of his forehead to the bottom left of his jaw, narrowly missing his eye. He also sports a branded mark on the back of his right hand, but often wears gloves to cover the marking. His face has strong, well-defined features, and would be pleasantly handsome if it weren't for the viscous scar. He is a decent fighter, young and inexperienced still but showing good promise. He wears a sword with a strange rune etched near the pommel, the same marking as the one branded on his hand. He also has a large scar on his left forearm.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
His strength lies not in his sword arm, but his mind. Despite being somewhat dumb in terms of intelligence, he has a strong mind for battle. He posses much Wisdom for someone his age, and has proven his tactfulness numerous times during training. He would rather stand back and calculate the battlefield than to charge headlong into the enemy. Andrin shows great talent as a leader, and hope to become and officer down his career. He is a bit too courageous, and does whatever he can to follow his orders, but has a soft spot for his fellow allies, who he will try and save no matter the cost. He doesn't quite grasp the ideal that sometimes sacrifices must be made.

History or Backstory:
Andrin grew up on in the capital of the Helios Province with his mother Aria Deterius, his father Jermaine, a brother named Jason and a sister named Vaelrya. His father was a high-ranking member of the King's Guard, and the two brothers revered the man they look up to, as well as the order he followed. When they were 5, Andrin and Jason were playing with Vaelrya, who was 8, when she stopped suddenly and fell to the floor. They called to Aria, as Jermaine was on-duty, and Aria arrived and placed Vaelrya in a bed. She died two days later due to an infection that seared through her body. Aria fell into a deep depression, pushing the brothers and Jermaine away from her. Saddened, Jermaine worked harder than ever to bring gold and honor to the family name, even going so far as to teach Andrin and Jason how to wield various weapons. Andrin came to fancy the sword, the typical weapon of the Knights of honor and glory he heard often from his father, while Jason took up the waraxe. When the children were 17, a letter came to them from one of the King's Guard, explaining Jermaine was slain in battle against a party of Guardians. Aria couldn't take anymore loss and took her own life the next night. The brother's didn't know what to do and fought over the topic. Andrin felt it was their duty to join the King's Guard and avenge their father, while Jason believed it was the King's fault that Jermaine died since he ordered the hunting of the Guardians. The discussion came to blows, the brother's facing off, sword against axe. Jason ultimately overpowered and won, giving Andrin the scars on his face and forearm. Instead of finishing his defeated brother, he fled to join the Guardians. Recovering from his wounds, Andrin left to join the King's Guard with the vow to avenge his father and make him proud.

(Here's a rough picture of Andrin, it's from google so it's not 100% accurate but it's pretty close.)

EDIT:
Andrin Deterius grew up revering his father, Jermaine Deterius, and the King's Guard. Andrin's father was a member of the guard, and always came home to his 3 children with fantastic stories. Stories about knights in shining armor slaying mythical dragons and of hunters creeping through a forest, sniping monsters to keep the kingdom safe. Andrin's sister, Vaelryn, grew out of the stories, but Andrin and his brother Jason constantly listened to Jermaine's tales, even when he ran out of fresh ones and recycled them. Andrin and Jason would run around the house, wielding sticks like sword and pretending to be the glorious knights battling each other for the hand of a princess. Their mother, Aria, would merely smile and work on household chores with Vaelryn. At night, Aria would teach the children how to read, write, and perform simple math. Aria was a teacher for a private school, and while the Deterius family couldn't afford to send the children to the school, she taught them at home anyways.

When the boys reached their 14th birthday, Jermaine presented them with their own swords, specially crafted from Jermaine's closest friend. Both blades had an identical mark etched right above the guard. Andrin and Jason accepted the gift, as well as tutoring on how to wield the blade from Jermaine. The family was happy, but it was a peace that wouldn't last long. 3 years later, Vaelryn grew very sick. Despite her mother's best efforts to save her daughter, she perished in bed after a painful experience.

Aria and Jermaine both fell into a depression, both handling it their own ways. Jermaine started going out more often to the tavern, spending every coin he could on drink. His name became a joke among the King's Guard, and he was almost thrown into prison for insulting a high ranking officer. Aria on the other hand simply laid in bed, not moving or eating. Not even the love of both Andrin and Jason could save their parents from their fate. Aria died of dehydration a few days later. Jason and Andrin had to bury their mother in the backyard, as Jermaine was too drunk to assist, passed out on the living room floor. Jason finally became fed up with his father's attitude, claiming that if he wouldn't have spent so much time in the King's Watch and more time at home, Aria would still be alive. Andrin took up the defence of his beloved father, responding with the fact that they wouldn't be in the house they were standing in if it wasn't for their father's work. The dispute came to blows between the brothers, sword clashing against sword in the backyard of the house. Ultimately, the stronger Jason claimed victory over his brother. A slash across Andrin's face and arm forced him backwards, where a kick to his leg sent him to his knee. Andrin faced Jason in the eye, demanding him to finish the job as blood poured down his face. Jason merely shook his head, turned, and walked away, leaving the family. Wounded, Andrin staggered back inside where he passed out next to his father.

Andrin finally came to, surprised he hadn't perished to his wounds yet. He carefully bandaged himself up sloppily and went back into the living room to find his father had died that night in his drunken sleep. Andrin staggered out the door, attracting the attention of passerby's. A priest finally approached him and offered to patch him up correctly. Andrin accepted the priest's offer and rested at his house for a few days. When he was finally well again, except for the scars on his face and arm, he went back home and buried Jermaine next to Aria and Vaelryn. Andrin grabbed the family crest, a small metal badge that was neatly placed above the fireplace. He then got a pair of tongs and held the emblem in the coals of the fire until the metal glowed orange. Taking his right hand, he branded the family crest onto his hand, despite the immense pain, as a reminder of who he was. After finishing the gruesome task and not knowing where else to turn, he entered the small building labeled "King's Guard Recruitment."
