Strength of Steel, Will of Iron
World

The world is known as by many names, and is host to many factions. In the center is the seat of humanity known as the Border Empire, home to the technologically advanced Bordermen. Inside the Border Empire lies the nation of the Griffin Kingdoms, allies to the Border Empire since its conception, the Griffin Kingdoms house the mighty Gryph-Beasts, tended to by the Griffin Civilians. To the West lies the lush and vibrant land of Britain, a land of peasants and serfs and of knights and nobles. The Britainnians work tirelessly for the benefit of their Kingdom as is their holy duty. To the North lies a land devoid of life. A sickly green fog covers what is known as the Northern Wastes, and inside it lives the Wastelanders, a friendly if not foul smelling race. To the East of the Border Empire lies the World's End Peaks, and at their base lies the lands of Shiremoot, the land of the stout and hardy Hammer Folk. Past the Peaks, over its snowy tips, is the mysterous and deadly forest of Verdanthome, protected ever so vigilantly by the Verdantkin, despite their dwindiling numbers. And finally to the South, lies the enemy to life itself, the nation of Stellia, the land of the Undead, and ruled by the Mad Queen, bent on destroying the Border Empire at any cost, as for every dead mortal adds another soldier in her unholy army. This is the world you live in, a world that is for the first time in its history, is experiencing a relative peace as all nations had banded together to face a common foe, and whether they succeed depends on their willingness to stand together or die alone.

Magic

In this world, magic had always been there, lingering in the air and carried in by the winds. While all can feel the ebb and flow of magic, if they really concentrated, only a select few can unitize this resource to perform extraordinary feats and deeds. However the use of magic in itself is dangerous as it the use strains the body and mind. Young or power hungry wizards might use too much magic at once and in such cases suffer side effects, ranging from harmless effects such as headaches and nosebleeds, to more dangerous effects such as
Savant syndrome or even death.

Stahlhiem College

Stahlhiem College is the only magic school in the entirely of hte Border Empire. Every year up to a 15-20 new students arrive and every year only 3-4 graduate to a brighter future. The college is currently housing over 400 Students, all of which are at different stages of their training to become proper mages. The college follows a strict curriculum and is staffed by 7 Master Mages, as well as protected by a division of mercenary Void Born to ensure student safety. The College itself is rather large, with trips from one side of the College to the other taking 15-20 minutes, not including the building itself.

Locations

Dormitory: The Dormitory is where the students will live and sleep while at Stahlhiem College. Students are too take heed not to leave any items of value lying around unguarded as the Tunnel Goblin Servants will tend to steal any object that isn't bolted to the floor.

Testing Grounds: Students are taught how to use spells vocally but require a place to test them out. The outdoors Testing Grounds provides such a place.

Classrooms: the Classrooms are only for students years 1-7. There they will be taught the basics of magic from one of the 7 Master Mages.

Library: The Library is an expansive hall, with hundreds of books with varying subjects to study. Students will not find wanting should they wish to read a good book on the history of the Border Empire, or find a book on Tunnel Goblins

Meal Hall: The Meal Hall is where all students go for their dinners, provided by the College's...not goblin staff. Announcements will be made there as well.

Dueling Hall: When mages must settle disputes personally, they trek to the Dueling Hall where two or more wizards fight it out until one is the victor. Luckily the Void Born Guards make sure that no one is seriously injured...for the most part.

Infirmary: Magic is rather dangerous. Like really dangerous, especially in the hands of novices and over eager students. The infirmary is there to make sure that the people injured at the College would stay stable until healed.

Stables: The Stables is where the college keeps all animals it uses for either experimentation, lessons, transportation, or just the Gryph-Beasts that comes with the Griffin Civilians.

Chapel: The College sports a chapel with shrines, statures, alters and totems of all the various Gods of the world, including Ulrich, God of the Border Empire, St. Elise, God of the Griffin Kingdoms, the Grail Lady God of Britain, Drognar, Tesnar and Hemnar, Gods of the Hammer Folk, and Idlil and Ionor, the Sun and Moon gods of Verdanthome and the Plague Father, the god of the Wastelanders.

Stahlhiem: The city of Stahlhiem itself is a large bustling city of industry, with luxury goods being produced and inported in every day. Students, would they wish may explore the city as long as they leave with a Void Born escort and if they return on time.

It was early evening, nearly dinner and as the sun went down at the college footsteps stands three figures. A woman wearing ornate, blue, white and gold robes standing between a rugged and aging Witch Hunter wearing a brown long coat and an armored man with glowing purple eyes, waits on top several steps leading to Stahlhiem College while she and her companions waits for the arrival of new students.

“How many shall be arriving this year Assistant?” Asks Hadwin, the armored man

“Fifteen I believe, all from in and out of the Border Empire.” Replied Page

“Fifteen? Isn’t that rather high for arriving students?”

“It is a warning Void Born. I do not expect you to understand, but Ulrich is warning and preparing us for the war to come. I can feel it in.” Said Vulmar

“You believe everything to be a sign Witch Hunter. If Ulrich is so powerful then how come we have yet to quell the Undead at our southern Borders?”

“Watch your tongue creature. Do not think your immortality gives you any refuge from the Church’s grasp.”

“Enough, both of you. The College has enough problems already without the two of you at each other’s throats. I can spot the carriages arriving now. Hadwin, prepare the guards. Vulgar, shall you return to your duties?” Said Page

“I rather stay here and make sure things do not get ugly.” Replied Vulmar

“Then I trust you can handle ugly then?” Asks Hadwin

“I may be old, but I’m not senile so yes Void Born I can handle ugly.”

“I know you can. I can see it in your face.” Said Hadwin, chuckling slightly at his joke. He clears his throat before addressing Page. “I shall return to my duties Assistant. If you excuse me.” Hadwin walks into the college as four carriages arrive at the College. The drivers leave their seats and opens the door, allowing the new students to exit.

A Griffin stopped and laid slowly down making sure her passenger didn't fall off when waking up. At a closer look, Jagton, a boy about the age of 15 was sleeping on the female griffin's back. She started to nip at him until he woke up.

"Are we at the college, Karma?" Jagton asked stretching. He looked up and saw all the carriages have stopped and other kids were exiting them.

"So here we are," he said in awe when he looked up at the building, "I here few students graduate here. I hope I'm one of them." Karma gave a light growl as to say "You will."

Although it was nearing dinner and many of the passengers were eagerly awaiting their arrival at Stahlhiem, Mikida arrived perfectly asleep. Only once the carriages came to a complete stop and many passengers had already begun to gather their things did Mikida even begin to stir. Unlike the vast majority of people, she didn't have any sort of belongings which she had to handle.

Mikida outstretched her arms, letting out a prolonged and unapologetic yawn. Although Mikida's actions would suggest a calm and relaxing atmosphere, in actuality she just reached the most difficult part of her entire trip. Now that she came aboard as a Verdantkin youth seemingly no older than 7, she had nobody to vouch for her belonging at this school. In fact, just the journey itself caused plenty of trouble. After all, what could this black haired, twintailed, fair-skinned, child possibly have any business coming to Stahlhiem? It didn't help matters that nobody could vouch that she was even invited to attend. Needless to say, she likely has been eyed down curiously since the moment she revealed that she had snuck on board.

Yet one could never tell that she was in such a perilous situation as she simply ran her hands down her playful red and black dress to smooth out the wrinkles, and leapt from her seat to the floor. Still seemingly half-awake, Mikida rubbed her eyes, making her way towards the college. Perhaps all it would take is looking like she is meant to be here.

As the students arrived at the school Page looked at the Witch Hunter before looking down at the new students.

"Welcome Students to Stahlhiem College of Magic. I am Assistant Page Landrain and I know it must be hard for most of you to make the decision to travel to this the College, but I assure you that you will have a safe, nurturing environment to bloom your talents. We here at Stahlhiem College, are determined to-" The assistance was interrupted when a pillar of fire erupted from the other side of the college, lighting up the sky in an orange hue for a split second before disappearing. "By the Lady- Witch Hunter!" Vulmar didn't say anything as he walks off towards the source of the pillar. Page sighs and turns to the students. "Now if you may, please follow me students." Page turns to enter the college as the group of students followed her. Some where talking about the pillar of fire, while others had general chatter amongsts themselves.

Page led the students through the college's halls, past Void Born guards and laborers, before stopping at two giant doors. She turns to face the group. "Now students, I'm sure that...incident earlier had been taken care of, and I am positive the trip here had made you rather peckish. So if you would please continue to follow me." The Assistant opens up the doors, revealing a large and extravagant meal hall, with tables filled with the finest meals and seats packed full of studenst of varying ages, ranging from 20s all the way to mid 30s. Page leads the students to an empty table, with hot and warm foods, untouched and steaming and with a simple gesture, offers the seats to the students, which most did as they began digging into everything from the Roasted Pork to the Potato Soup. During this time the entire hall was marry as the students socialized and ate together.

Steven sat at a table with the other new students, and introduced himself while getting himself food.
"I believe that now is the time for introductions. My name is Steven, and I hope to spend my time here mastering mind magic. What about the rest of you?"

"I'm sorry Karma but I think you need to wait in the stables do you think you know where that is?" Jagton asked. The griffin gave a nod and started walking towards what should be the stables. Jagton grabbed his bag and got off Karma before she left for the stables and began running to the group that was heading to the mess hall. The boy was able to catch up with the group and sit with them. He waited for Steven to finish speaking to tell everyone about him.

"Uh, hey I'm Jagton I've come here to learn Beasts magic. Nice to meet you Steven." he replied with a yawn afterwards.

Mikida stumbles her way into the dining hall with all the other students. Although she could only really pay attention to the two boys in front of her, she still found herself surprised that they had not even a moment of concern to be spent on the young girl without a possession in the world following them. However this surprise was mild, and she found herself at the same table as them anyway. Looking out at the large number of students sharing a dinner with them, the first thing she noticed was the jovial nature of the dining hall. This put a slight smile on her face, reminding her of the meals she'd shared with her family and friends.

When she goes to take a seat, she jumps onto Jagton's lap without even suggesting she would do such a thing. Reaching for the plate just to the right of Jagton, she moves it closer to her, beginning her collection of various foods for her consumption. Where she sits, Jagton would have to reach around her if he wanted to even start gathering his dinner onto the plate. Introducing herself with a sleepy lisp, "My name is Mikida, and I'm here to study illusions. Though, does that mean I'm in the wrong place? Everyone has different classes..."

Jagton noticed the girl's sleepy tone. Did she just wake up? Or is she like an insomniac?

"Did you just wake up too?" He asked wondering which could of happened.

Mikida lays her head against Jagton's shoulder, looking up towards his brown eyes. Her lisp persists, "I thought you'd have known from the trip here. I've been asleep since around 2. Were you not on the same carriage as me?"

Steven pours some coffee and hands the cup to Mikida. He feels slightly uneasy; he feels as though something is whispering in his mind, like when the others at the Temple would send him thoughts. However, this thought is quiet, like it's trying to hide.
"Here, this should wake you up."

Mikida nods with a hint of interest developing across her face. She was curious what it must be like to sleep while flying on a griffin, but she didn't think to vocalize this concern since the offering of coffee warranted her attention. Mikida shakes her head vigorously, "Coffee is bitter. Even if it might help a little bit, I'm used to being sleepy, so it really isn't a big deal."

Rahvi had already slipped away from the crowd once. She had leapt from the carriages-her lack of stature hadn't readily been accounted for, but she was more than capable of working around that. Glancing around the group that had travelled with her, she saw a wider array of races than she ever had before. Not many people came to Shiremoot.
The walk to the castle had been brief, but Rahvi's restless attention had been wrested away from the woman trying to speak to them by the pillar of fire in the distance. This wasn't unusual, as everyone was staring at the fire, but Rahvi's eyes gleamed. This was a chaotic place. Her kind of place. She had seen magic before, of course. Who hadn't? Her own father bent metal after all. But this kind of open experimentation was amazing. The air smelt like fun and the chaos brought a beaming smile to Rahvi's face. She'd slipped away from the small crowd of new faces and after the guard who had gone towards the fire. She didn't know what she was expecting to find, but it didn't occur to her that she would have every chance to find these things out during the school term. She was here, and she was ready to start learning, even if that was merely satisfying her rampant curiosity for now.

Mere minutes later-she was a fast mover-Rahvi found her way back to the hall where what looked like the entire college worth of students were sitting at tables laden with every kind of food imaginable. A massive grin on her face, she found the other new students she had spotted in the carriages. There was a boy who looked younger than her with a tiny girl on his lap sitting with a dark haired boy in formal clothes. Rahvi glanced down at her own well-travelled attire, and grinned to herself. He had to be mind magic or illusions if he was getting away with formal clothes. The boy was there for beasts-he had ridden a griffin to school-and as for the girl...Rahvi had absolutely no idea. She was very young and didn't appear to have any belongings. Rahvi loved mysteries. She sat herself next to the well-dressed boy and began loading up her plate. "You're the other new kids, right? Did I miss the introductions? I'm Rahvi." Eyeing a potato she wanted halfway to another student's plate, she focused her will and pulled it towards her. Catching it, she dropped it immediately onto her plate and reached for the drinks. She leaned in, eyes gleaming. "And I know who started the fire."

Steven shakes his head a bit, writing the strange thought off as his imagination being overactive, and takes back the coffee.
"Bitter? Some of my teachers at the temple would excommunicate you for such heresy. What's this about the fire?"

Snorting at the well-dressed boy, Rahvi shovelled her stolen potato into her mouth. Worth it. Perfect butter to potato ratio. She reached out for the coffee. "I'll take some if she won't." Swallowing and pouring herself some coffee, she glanced around at the other students in the hall. They were all older, mostly between 20 and 30, and there were a few who were even older still. Rahvi guessed they'd be the ones teaching them. "Well I don't know any names or anything yet, but they sure didn't look like a student." She gestured at griffin-boy. "Hand me the salt?" Sometimes she forgot she had telekinesis. "What're you in for then?" she asked the well-dressed boy.

"I hope to become more skilled in mind magic, mostly through practice and learning about the minds of others. The other schools of magic also hold interest; I hope to learn about them during my stay here. What about you? What's your name and focus?"

Although it had first appeared that Mikida was gather food for herself, she ultimately hands the plate she was preparing to Jagton. "Here you go. I know that I'm a bit in the way, so I thought I'd get it for you." Turning back to Steven, Mikida already is wearing a pout, "If it tastes bitter then it tastes bitter. It isn't like I can help my tastes..." Looking somewhat awake, if not briefly, Mikida finds herself more than a little interested in Rahvi. Something about the way she carried herself offered a lot of personality, certainly more interesting than the two boys she was talking to before, "You missed a little bit, but all we really got through was names and schools. I'm Mikida, and I'm in the school of illusions. This is Steven, he is here for mind magic. And then the one under, or behind, ummm whatever. This is Jagton, he is here for the Beasts." Rhythmically, "And now you are all caught up."

As the students ate, the headmaster, who sits at the head of the hall, along with the teachers and major staff members, looks at Heinrich and the instinctively the Light Mage stands up and from his hands, he fires off a ball of pure light which catches the eyes of the entire room, causing all the students to quite down. Everyone looks at the Master's table, and the Headmaster stands up. The man wore grey robes and wears a silver mask, but still talked clearly and with a warm authority.

"Greeting students. First I wish to celebrate the anniversary of opening after our initial opening 5442 years ago." The room erupted in a roar of applause and cheers for several seconds before Arnest quiets everyone down with simple hand motions. "I also wish to congratulate these years graduates, Christine Streissener, and Rana Agnor!" The room once again enters a state of applause as a Borderman and a Verdantkin stands up and politely bows before sitting back down. The crowd then stops their cheers. "And finally, I would like to introduce this years new arrivals." The headmasters motions over to the new comer's table and the hall erupts into more praise before quieting back down. "Now as headmaster I would love nothing more, then to watch these fine students learn and grow, but as the Province Governor, my duties extend to more then just these halls. So to end my speech, I want to introduce the First Year's teacher, Ms. Borghild Wijk." The students once again began to cheer and clap as a smiling Wastelander woman stands up and gives a polite bow. The Wastelander had three eyes, and three arms, one right and two left, and wore green and brown robes. However her most defining feature, was that while her right and one of her left arm were free, her third arm rested on her pregnant belly. The applause was interrupted when a man
with orange hair, wearing orange and red robes burst into the hall, with an angry look on his face.

"HOW DARE YOU ARNEST!!" Shouted the man. "20 Years of loyal service and you didn't tell me that today was the introduction of the new students! Well this betrayal will not go unnoticed!" The man then absorbed all the fire in the hall, darkening the room to summon forth a head sized rainbow colored fireball in his hand, causing the students to back away, while others immediately duck under their seats. Vulmar runs into the hall and tackles the man.

"NO!!" Shouted the Witch Hunter but he was too late as the fireball was unleashed towards the hall's ceiling. When it got to a certain point however, the fireball stops, and decends a bit, before exploding into a show of dozens of harmless fireworks. The students looked up at fireworks in awe as the fireworks popped and cracked. Rilker laughed away as Vulmar held him down. "Damn you Rilker! Every year with this damned show!"

"If you do not allow fire to spread then it will consume us all!~! HAHAHHAAHH!!" Laughed the Master Fire Mage.

Rahvi opened her mouth to answer the tiny girl-Mikida, who she supposed wasn't that tiny at all compared to Rahvi, who wondered if they were actually the same height-but a sudden bright light at the end of the hall caught everyone's attention. She smiled up at the bright light in wonder. Beautiful. A tall man in grey robes and a silver mask stood up and everyone quietened down and watched him attentively. Rahvi watched the rest of the students watching him for a moment before he started to speak. He had to be the headmaster.

He made a few announcements Rahvi didn't really care that much about yet, but she joined in with woops and hollers when the crowd cheered, loving the buzzing energy in the room. She beamed out at the rest of the hall when the applause came to them. She even performed a seated bow, though most of it was hidden by the table. She eyed off the first year teacher with intense curiosity. She had never met a Wastelander before. She had extra arms and eyes and an extra something in her stomach, but she seemed friendly enough. Rahvi wondered how mutations were passed down for Wastelanders. Would her baby have three arms as well? It had to be handy having an extra arm. Rahvi could think of so many-

The doors slammed open to admit an orange man in a rage. Rahvi immediately pointed at him and clambered up onto the table for a better view. "He's the one!" she hissed at the other first years. "He set the fire! Told you it wasn't a student!" The man was screaming at the Headmaster, but Rahvi ignored his words once the fire started. Everyone scrambled for cover. Her eyebrows raised as he shot a fireball into the air and she leapt over the table, pushing the bench opposite her over with her mind before she got there so she had cover when she landed. She stared up, the fire reflecting in her eyes, adrenaline buzzing in her system. With all these experienced wizards around, she wasn't concerned enough about her life to stop smiling, and when the fireball exploded into fireworks, sizzling high above the tables, she laughed out loud, cheering and clapping her hands. What an amazing place she had found herself in. If she had ever had any regrets about coming to college, they were cleared right out. The people here were amazing.

She stared up at the fireworks and beamed. Delightful.
