For tens of thousands of years the galaxy the Galactic Dominion had sat unchallenged within the Galaxy. Ever expanding, and ever growing, the Dominion had grown content with sending more and more colonies out into the unknown void to, waiting for them to grow then annexing them into the ranks of the Dominion. This changed in the year 12433 when Humanity came into contact with their first sentient alien race, the Tzeetch Hive Ships, who had been watching the Dominion expand and grow with curious eyes. Still the revelation didn't deter the Dominion as the Tzeetch rarely fought the humans as the Tzeetch much preferred to live in giant continent sized Hive Ships rather then colonizing planets. And so the Dominion continued to expand, until they had engulfed half the galaxy.

Their expansion stopped however when they came upon a relatively small faction known as the Steel House. As before, the Dominion attempted to annex them, but the Steel House rejected every and any offer the Dominion had set. This didn't matter as the Dominion at this point were no strangers to subjugating worlds, but this was different as the Dominion sent a force of 800k soldiers and a navy of 500 ships to the planet of Grandiose, to meet the Steel House in a pitched war, known as the Contact War. They were caught off guard however when the Steel House proved to be even more technologically advanced then the Dominion as the Steel House deployed troops encased in Power Armor, elite infantry made up of cyborgs more machine then man, and large hulking beasts of metal and hatred they called Warlords. the Steel House's force of 200k slaughtered the Dominion inexperienced ground forces The Dominion didn't fare better in space either as the Steel House's 100 ships were larger, more heavy armored , employed technology such as Refractor Shields, and outmatched the Dominion's in everything but maneuverability. In the aftermath of the Contact War, the Dominion suffered 775k casualties on the ground and 430 losses in space compared to the Steel House's 20k ground casualties and no losses in space.

The Contact War let the Dominion know that they're not the powerhouse they thought they were and with that realization they decided to stop the focus on expansion, and focus on developing technology, growing their economy, and reinforcing their military in order to match whatever dangers may lay in the dark void of space.
