The industrial district of Tianshi City was a far cry from its more central areas. The bright colours were replaced with dull greys and browns, and the air was thick with the smell of pollution from the factories. Downtrodden looking men and women in ragged clothes trudged through the muck of the streets on their way to factory shifts or warehouse work, and they were the lucky ones who had work. The homeless were more prominent here as well - they weren't driven off by the police, as they were if they tried to litter the streets closer to the city's heart.

Blink led them down a few side-streets into a particularly dark and unpleasant part of town. Almost everyone here was armed, and they gave the group leering stares as they passed. A combination of Nao's reputation and Tugark's appearance meant they were given a wide berth, however.

"We're heading to an underground bar, in the cellar of an old warehouse." Blink explained as he poked his head around the next turn, "Be ready for a fight. They'll know that a legit guild turning up is nothing but trouble for them. Nobody's supposed to know it's there unless they're part of ... well, a bunch of bad guys I used to run with."

The warehouse in question lay across the street from them - rusted, decrepit and filled with holes, it gave every impression that it was entirely abandoned.

Blink was visibly nervous, shifting on the spot and sweating slightly. "These guys are bad news. They'll kill... no, they'll make me wish they'd killed me if they ever get their hands on me after this."

Nao placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry about that. You're with Golden Phoenix - we look after our own."

"Yeah... I'm sleeping under your bed from now on, Nao." Blink muttered in reply. Clearly, he wasn't entirely reassured.

Tugark followed behind silently. But a change came over him as they traveled further into the darker part of the city, his blue hues growing bright at the condition of the people here. His fur bristled around his neck and he held himself taller than he had in the heart of the city. The beast was not afraid or intimidated. If it were possible, he was angry.

Deep grumbles rumbled out of his mouth as Tugark muttered something incoherently under his breath. "Fear not, friend Blink.." Tugark muttered quietly. "As long as I am alive, no harm will befall upon you because you have assisted in my search." Tugark was glaring at the warehouse. "I will make sure of it." It was no threat. It was a promise.

Blink adjusted his hat, "Yeah, well. I hope so." he murmured, "Let's go, they'll already know we're coming, so we shouldn't waste any time."

He broke from the alleyway onto the street and walked across to the warehouse. Stopping outside, he pressed himself against the wall and peered through a hole inside. It was dark and desolate, and thick layers of dust covered most of the floor and the few ancient shipping containers and crates that were scattered around.

"You sure this is the place?" Nao whispered as he joined Blink at the wall, "It's... deserted."

"That's why people don't find it, duh." Blink replied, "This way."

With the coast clear, he led them inside and across to one of the shipping containers. It was closed, and he knocked on it five times, in a rhythmical pattern. There was a pause, then a voice from inside spoke up.

"Password."

Blink hesitated... "Taurus?" he ventured.

"That's last month's password. Get lost, guildies."

Sighing, Blink turned to them, "Gimme a moment." he said, before closing his eyes, and vanishing in a flash of light. From the cracks in the shipping container, another flash of light was visible, followed by a grunt and a clank as a body hit the side and slid down it to the floor. After a moment, with a grating of metal on metal, the container's door was unbarred and swung open. Blink stood behind it, with the unconscious body of a large black-haired man who looked to be in his thirties lying across from him.

At the far end of the container, there was a staircase descending into the ground. Nao stepped forwards, "I'll take the lead from here, Blink."

"Be my guest." the smaller boy said, stepping aside to let Nao pass, "You'll have to hunch down to get through, 'm afraid." he said to Tugark, "But the bar itself is big enough for you."

Tugark had been prepared to bash through the door before Blink disappeared and reappeared on the opposite side after a few moments later. "I do not think I'll ever get use to someone having that ability.." Tugark admitted, scratching his snout sheepishly. He bent slightly to walk into the shipping container, his claws tapping lightly on the metal.

Tugark shrugged slightly. As he said earlier, he was use accommodating a smaller race. "It can't be worse than living in a dwarf hole for three months.." Tugark commented as he caught up to Blink. He followed behind Nao, gazing down the staircase, pondering. It was defiantly a narrow space and Tugark was going to have difficulties either way. "Then again, I was much younger and more limber than I am now.." He sighed before heading down the stairs, hunching over to fit through.

The staircase led down what felt like two flights, and at the end there was another door - propped open, this time. From within, the sound of music could be heard. Old style rock music, foreign by the sounds of it. Nao was the first in. The bar itself was largely devoid of patrons. Clearly, most of them had bugged out after hearing that there was a guild on the way. There were a few men dotted around the room nursing drinks, all of them very obviously armed. At a glance, he spotted three holding onto shotguns that looked to be Losenyu in make - far less advanced than the firearms of their neighbours. Another two were holding rifles that must have been Terran or Taiyou - going by their sleeker design.

One man stood up from the bar as Blink walked in after Tugark, and turned to look at them. He was a tall man with a thin moustache and a goatee, dressed in a patterned waistcoat. Long hair fell down to the small of his back, neatly combed. "Thought I made it clear what'd happen to anyone who led outsiders to one of our haunts, Blink. You may've ditched on us, but that don't change the rules."

Blink practically quivered in place, but Nao stepped forwards to save him from having to answer. "You will not threaten my guildmates. We're here to see a man called Jack. We don't want trouble, we just want to talk."

The man laughed. "Listen here, boys. He doesn't want trouble." The men laughed raucously on cue, before being quieted with a wave of his gloved hand. "Well, well. It's an honour to welcome such a prestigious guest, Naotora Kato. Golden Phoenix's poster boy. What makes you think Jack wants to talk to you?"

The room quieted somewhat after Tugark arrived, and several of the men's expressions changed from derisive to frightened. "What the fuck is that?" one of them asked.

The man in the silk gloves raised an eyebrow. "Didn't realise you were on good terms with a yeti, Kato. Watch he doesn't break anything." he said with a sneer.

Tugark narrowed his eyes. A grumble escaped his lips at being compared to a yeti.

"Yeti's are the most smelliest things imaginable..." He muttered quietly. He placed himself in front of Blink and behind Nao, refusing to let even one of the others look at him wrong.

Still he turned around to look at Blink before whispering, "I don't smell, do I..?"

"Not at all, big guy." Blink whispered back. "These guys, on the other hand..."

Nao, in the meantime, carefully analysed the situation. The men with guns posed the biggest threat. If this turned hostile, they could easily take him down before he got a chance to bring his power into play. He either needed to avoid this turning into a fight, or catch them off guard.

"We're looking to acquire an item we think that Jack has. We're willing to pay, so there's no need for hostility. We just want to do business." He said finally. It was a bluff. Even if he had the kind of money that the criminal would be expecting, he had no intention of paying scum like him.

"Hm." The man stroked his chin, "Lee. Go tell Jack who's here to see him, let him decide if he wants to do business with this lot or not."

One of the unarmed men nodded and quickly disappeared out a back door.

"Blink," Nao whispered, "If this goes south, I need you to disarm the two with the rifles. I'll deal with the other three. I should be able to jam them."

The gloved man coughed, "You got something to say to the group, pretty boy?"

Nao was saved from answering by Lee's return. "Jack says he'll see them, boss." he said. 'Boss' raised an eyebrow.

"Well, fancy that. Go on then. He's just through that door. My boys will escort you, to see that you don't have any trouble." he said, waving a hand.

Nao nodded, and wordlessly started forwards. Blink hesitated a moment, but followed after him. "Hope this guy has what you're after." he murmured to Tugark, "This lot are bad news. Hoped they wouldn't be here. Got a bad past with them."

Tugark walked along with the group in silence, not having commented at all to the previous exchanges with his small group of friends. He had an air about him that made him seem ancient and young at the same time, his eyes weary and alert, wise and naive all at once.

This warrior of old had never seen these types of weapons, but he knew if they were carried that they were dangerous. And the way Nao had whispered about them earlier, deadlier than he anticipated at first glance of the crafted metal.

But Tugark nodded to Blink as he spoke. "As do I.. I feel as I owe you a great debt now, and Nao as well.. Even if it is not here.." He said. "I do not wish to make trouble for your future.. But your past is just that. You've past by it, and you're alive. I judge those on how they are now. Whatever has happened back then.. I will not have it harm you now. You have a word of an Avand. And we keep our word, until the death." He murmured as quietly as he could. He then grinned a fangy grin that made him look more feral than reassuring.

"Heh. Thanks." Blink said, smiling nervously. If nothing else, he was confident that Tugark could intimidate anyone who wanted to try anything funny.

The back door led out into a wider open space, lined with stacked boxes. A scrawny looking elderly man was seated at a desk near the back of the room, flicking through a ledger. He looked up from it briefly as they walked in, but didn't speak until they began to approach.

"Ah, ah, that's close enough my friends. Be civil, you've got to give a man his personal space, especially a man who can have you shot. Hah!" The old man snorted with amusement. "But that wouldn't be civil in itself, would it? And where are we without our civility? With the animals, that's where! And that's no good!"

He slammed the ledger down on the table and leaned forwards, "Blink! Good to see you, boy! Still horny as ever, I see. Hah!" he snorted a second time, "You see what I did there? Comedy! Take notes, kids. Now listen, I'm a business man and so I'll give it to you straight - I haven't got time to waste, there's important things to be done! Don't have any unimportant things to do, they're all dealt with by my assistant! Isn't that right, Ai?"

A woman who had previously been practically invisible, pressed up against the back wall motionless, spoke up. "Yes sir." she replied in monotone.

"Of course it's right! I said it! And within these walls, everything I say's right! Ai knows it, the boys out there know it, and I certainly know it! You'd do well to remember it yourselves! But look at me! I'm wasting time, you came here for a reason, so spit it out! Come on, what're you waiting for? Speak!"

Nao raised an eyebrow at the man's rant. He certainly talked a lot. "We're here to find an item that you acquired recently." He glanced across at Tugark. He'd mentioned that the weapon would glow blue to those who knew its name, but he couldn't see anything in the room with any such glow. It was likely there was more here than what was on display. "It belonged to my friend here."

Jack leaned back, "Alright, so you're here for a buyback! I can work with that! I get that a lot. So, big guy, what're we looking at here? A giant teapot? A hat? A picture of grandma? Gimme something to go on, here!"

Tugark narrowed his blue eyes at the man. He did not like this man, he could feel it in his bones that this one was not up for the benefit of others. The woman reminded him of a snake; hidden until just upon the creature. "I cannot say what it is, but it has a special marking upon it." Tugark said quietly.

"I can draw the symbol for you. I'm sure you've probably have a good idea of your inventory and wares, and that is all I would need to show you in order to give you an idea of what it is I seek."

"A drawing? What is this, pictionary? Hah! I like that word, Ai, mark that down! Pictionary! We can market that! And for pity's sake, woman, get the man some paper! And a pen! One of those big ones, you know, the novelties - man's got big hands!"

Ai nodded her head, and disappeared behind one of the shelves. After only an instant, she reappeared with a large pen and paper in her hands - spirits knew how she'd managed to find them so quickly in the mess back there. She proffered them to Tugark, and an instant later was dragging a small table over for him to rest the paper on.

"Go on then! But first, you gotta tell me how many syllables are in it, right? Wait! Wrong game, never mind! Categories! That's it! I'm just messing with you, fella, I'm deadly serious about my customers. You draw me that symbol and you'll know in a lickety split whether I ever had anything with it on it! Unless I promised not to tell! In which case I'd lie! Hah! Confidentiality, you understand. I've got a reputation for discretion to protect!"

Nao and Blink exchanged a glance. Blink shrugged apologetically.

The beast tenderly took the paper and large pen and leaned over to where he could use the table to draw on. He slowly, carefully drew five lines and then a circle around them. Around the circle, he wrote in a language not found of this world, but it was similar to elven markings. Inside the circle looked that of a mountain. Once he was done, he hesitated but then handed it over. "This is what I am looking for."

Jack took the piece of paper with a flourish and held it up to the light, peering at it with what could only be exaggerated intensity. "Now that there is a unique piece of imagery! I'd go so far as to say one of a kind! Never seen anything like it before!"

He paused, leaving room for a moment of disappointment for dramatic effect before continuing.

"Until last week, that was!" He grinned, kicking back in his chair, "Was on my way back to the city after a profitable venture out near Naseni, wonderful place! Lots of trees, you can practically smell the lumber profits! Shame the folk that live there won't sell it off - like squirrels they are! Aerial obstacle courses all over the place, gliders and elevators... and that's just to get to the bathroom! Ha!"

He shook his head, "Anyway, as I was saying, I was on the road back from there. A storm had just hit, a downpour, wind blowing every-which-way, and Ai - the genius - had managed to let go of my umbrella! I was getting drenched, in a particularly foul mood, when a shady sort - didn't get a good look at his face, never a good sign - approached me wanting to sell off a dagger. Paltry little thing, didn't look worth the sheathe to carry it in, but he was a good salesman, got me talking - a challenging task, as I'm sure you'll agree - and had me take hold of it. Then BAM!" He leaned forwards with a wave of his hands, "It changes! Turns itself into an umbrella!"

Jack whistled, "Best damn umbrella I ever held. Kept me dry as anything for the rest of the trip after I threw a bag of gold at the poor bastard - think I hit him in the eye."

Here, he paused, leaning forwards conspiratorially. "Now, here's the thing. That umbrella had your symbol emblazoned right across its top. Figured it was just a fancy pattern myself, but there you are. It's also no longer in my possession..." He clicked his tongue, falling silent for a moment before continuing. "Ah... this is the part where you persuade me to tell you where it went, big guy. Clink clink, palms greased, that sort of business. Ya get me?"

____

Tugark scratched his nose worriedly. "How long ago did you sell it off..?" He asked, urgency in his voice.

____

"Good question! I'll give you that one for free, just 'cause I'm such a nice guy."

Nao was fairly sure he heard Blink rolling his eyes at that one.

"Four days ago, it was. Now if you want to know the who, the what, the where..." Jack grinned, "Persuading time."

____

Tugark hesitated but then he leaned forward to where his nose was just in front of Jack's face. His eyes were stern and worried at the same time, yet held an urgency to them. "Because that item is cursed. And you've been near it. Right now you may feel fine, wonderfully bliss, your luck may even feel as if it is on your side." He paused for a moment.

"But.." He continued. "Over time, you will gain a horrible rash on parts you really don't want a rash. And it will itch like the duhulie bug bite. The duhulie bug is a tiny little bug who's bite will make you itch and itch and itch, and eventually scratch your skin off.. It is a slow and painful thing, but you can't help but scratch.."

"But that's not the worst part.. Over time, your skin will begin to burn as well, and a stench will come from you that can be detected for miles.. No one will go near you ever again..."

He paused for a moment more. "Unless, I break this curse before its too late. But I need to know who you sold it to.." He seemed serious.

____

Jack's grin slowly faded as Tugark spoke, his jaw dropping slack and his lip quivering. "C-curse? Dear spirits! I've been duped! Tricked! Coaxed into a snafu! Ai, why the hell didn't you warn me!"

"I'm not sure there's any way I-"

"Quiet! We've no time! My glorious complexion is at risk! My exquisite parfum! Parfum, Ai!"

"It is possible that he's ly-"

"I said quiet already! We can't risk it! I am a national treasure, Ai, and no curse is going to ruin that. It was a woman who bought it, a strange sort she was, covered in robes and cloaks. Seems to be a running theme around this thing! She knew what she wanted when she walked in the door, didn't browse, just walked straight to my umbrella."

He waved his fingers dramatically, "It was like she already knew it was here! Spooky! Anyhow, as I always do, I had a pair of eyes on her to see where she went with it. Had to make sure she wasn't going to the cops, and all that. She set out on a train heading north, along the Senji line. Could be anywhere from here to Zhansen by now!"

With a nervous twitch, he cleared his throat. "Now, how about that curse-lifting? You've got me worrying now, and I sweat when I'm worried! Not pleasant! Ai, run me a bath while I close dealings with these gentlemen!"

The beleaguered woman sighed, "Yes sir," she muttered as she swept from the room out of a side door.

____

Tugark smiled slightly. "Thank you." He said, straightening up and walking closer to the salesmen. "Now hold still.." He held his massive clawed hand out in front of the man's face. He lowered his snout and closed his eyes, and began to mutter in tongues. Runes began to glow blue on his arm and his hand, and Jack would feel a shift in the air, though no obvious changes were made.

"There." Tugark said finally, backing away again. "Curse is lifted. We must be on our way, to stop the curse from spreading further.." He bowed slightly.

____

Jack breathed a sigh of relief, "Good, good. On your way, then. And label your damned cursed artefacts next time! Warnings save lives!"

He made a shooing gesture, "Off with you! I need some alone time with a hot tub of exfoliating water!"

Blink was grinning ear to ear as they left, and he leaned towards Tugark as they did. "That was fantastic. Couldn't have handled it better myself."

____

Tugark looked down at Blink but seemed eager to get out of the building before he let up his ruse. "It is not a.. Kind thing I have done, Master Blink.." He muttered quietly.

"Let us get out of here, then."

____

The armed men led the trio out of Jack's room and back into the bar, where the gloved man remained seated. He looked up at them with narrowed eyes as they moved out, but didn't speak until they were passing by his chair.

"You know your guild can't protect you forever, Taro," he said, his voice low and menacing. "Traitors always get their dues sooner or later."

Blink stiffened as he walked by, but he didn't say anything. However Nao it seemed wasn't satisfied with merely letting the comment slide.

"I told you once, filth, you will not threaten my guildmate," he turned to shoot a hard stare at the gloved man.

The man didn't speak for a long moment, taking a considered sip of his drink before carefully setting it down on the counter. "Now that, is a very rude tone to take with a man in the comfort of his own domain," he said calmly, adjusting his sleeves. "My boys and I have shown you nothing but hospitality here, and you repay my kindness by telling me what I can and cannot say? I'm offended."

Around the room, the men shifted in anticipation of trouble, moving their hands close to their guns.

____

Tugark's head turned slightly, and the air about him seemed to change almost instantly. The kind, bumbling beast who had shown no hostility so far seemed somewhat.. Unsettling suddenly. His stature seemed to swell, and he place a heavy hand on Blink's shoulder. Blink would hear the Avand mutter quietly, like a deep growl coming from his chest. It would feel as though static had passed an inch over every bit of his body.

Blink would be the only one to see the slight blue sheen surrounding his form, only appearing for him for bits at a time before fading. It was like, watching the inside of a bubble. Runes lit on Tugark's form, and his eyes seemed very cold. This was not the same creature Nao and Blink had walked in with. "You will let us pass unharmed." He said loudly, his voice making some objects vibrate where they sat. He slowly let go of Blink's shoulder. It was clear Tugark's remark was not a request, but very much a demand.

____

Blink glanced at Tugark with confusion as the strange sheen surrounded him, but stayed quiet. He'd no reason to distrust the big guy now.

"I have no intention of doing otherwise, my sizeable friend," the gloved man remarked, "I was merely informing my good friend Taro of some information he already knew. I believe that this conversation is over."

The men seemed to relax at this, but they kept their hands near their weapons. Many of them were watching Tugark fearfully. The gloved man, however, remained unmoved.

Nao didn't shift his glare from the man, but Blink put a hand on his arm. "Let's just go," he murmured.

With a deep breath, Nao nodded his head and turned to make for the door. Inwardly, he was seething, but it was obvious that Blink just wanted out. The men made no move to stop them as they exited the bar and back up the stairs, emerging once more into the warehouse.

It wasn't till they were out on the street again that Nao spoke. "The longer we don't deal with them, the more time there is for you to get hurt, Blink."

"They've already delivered on that, Nao. A long time ago. Nagasa just likes to flex his authority, he won't follow through," the blonde boy replied with a subdued sigh.

____

Tugark waited until his two companions had left the room, fanning his wings out slightly in order to shield them from the men around the room, until they had safely made it out of the room. He lingered for a moment more, glaring dangerously at the gloved man. He muttered something in tongues before turning swiftly and finally leaving the room.

Once outside, Tugark's demeanor did not change. He was still very cold, very hostile looking. But he stumbled once out of the werehouse, catching himself on the wall and leaning heavily on his arm. He panted, and Blink could see the blue 'bubble' around him fade slightly.

"So.. North I must go.." He panted quietly, but then looked to Blink. "After I ensure my word is kept.."

____

"I think you mean North we must go," Nao interjected, smiling. "A Golden Pheonix doesn't back out of a mission till it's complete. I said I'd help you find your weapon, and we haven't found it just yet."

Blink offered Tugark a small smile, "You'll be waiting a long time, 'm afraid," he said, "Unless you wanna play bodyguard for the rest of my life, I consider keeping them from jumping us down there following through on your word good enough."

He paused, glancing up at the sky in thought for a few moments before nodding his head. "Tell you what, I reckon I could use a break from this city. It's been years since I went far beyond it. I'll tag along with the pair of you, that way I'm out of Nagasa's reach even if he does decide to come after me. 'sides," he shot Nao a sidelong glance, "Nao here can't stand to be without me for too long, right buddy?"

Nao raised an eyebrow, "Those aren't exactly the words I'd use..."

"See?" Blink snorted, shaking himself free of the sombre expression he'd held since they descended into the hideaway. "He can't even find the words to express how deeply he needs me in his life."

The taller warrior sighed.

____

The Avand straightened and looked at the pair of warriors, concern upon his brow. He seemed reluctant on letting the two of them travel along with him. Closing his eyes and turning his head to the sky, he contemplated for a long moment. "Etch ar ech tu, Ivona.." He muttered quietly after a while. He sighed, resigned, and opened his eyes to face the pair again.

"Very well, then.." He murmured. "But first, there is more I must tell you. And then, you can decide whether or not you wish to proceed with the mission. I will not hold it against you if you do not. But let us get away from this place." He said, starting to walk back the way they had come.

____

Nao nodded his head, "If you'd rather go alone, then I won't force my presence on you. But I'd like to see this through. I told you that I'd help, and my word is not only my honour, but the honour of my guild.

The walk out of the industrial districts was uneventful, if lengthy. Beyond the factories, the streets continued to bustle with the energy of preparations for the festival of spirits as they made their way back towards the docks, and the Golden Phoenix guild hall there.

Fifteen minutes later...

Bones' head still hurt from the smack that brat Blink had given him after getting the drop on him, and the following dressing-down he'd had from Nagasa. What was he supposed to do when the little shit could teleport? He wasn't trained to deal with that. He was trained not to open the door unless people gave the right password, and to bash people who wouldn't go away.

He lit up a cigarette, muttering angrily to himself, when he heard footsteps coming from outside in the warehouse again. They were coming straight for the container. Bones scowled. If the kid was back, he'd show him-

A loud thunk of metal impacting metal filled the container, and Bones jumped to his feet. Two sets of metallic claws had pierced straight through the far side of the container. He scrambled backwards for the stairwell as they pulled, peeling the wall back with a horrific screeching of rent metal.

"We're under a-" Bones began to yell, but he never finished his sentence. He was silenced with a gurgle as two small metal spikes embedded themselves in his throat.

He collapsed to the ground, and the last thing he saw as the blood pooled beneath him was a pair of black boots stepping into the container.

____

"They'll be waiting for us now," Xue stated flatly as she stepped through the hole in the container her two fellows had torn open for her. Their faces shrouded with silvery hollow-eyed masks, they made no sign of acknowledging her words as they swept forwards like silent ghosts, but she knew that they had heeded them.

She made no effort to disguise her footsteps as she descended the metal staircase into the den of thieves that lay below. The other agents flowed ahead like spiders, seemingly unimpeded by gravity as they crept along the walls. Pausing only to adjust the butterfly pin that kept her hair tied back, Xue opened the door.

She was immediately met by gunfire. Three Losenyu rifles and two of more advanced Terran make, each trained upon her position. Each bullet stopped in its flight several feet in front of her even as the criminals continued to fire. They hung suspended before her, glittering with mystical energy. Others had swords and knives drawn and hesitated, ready to advance on her position.

Over her head, the other agents swept into the room. They moved like spectres, skating along the walls and ceiling as naturally as if moving along the ground. The gunmen hardly had a chance to alter their aim, as small shards of metal shot like bullets from the wide sleeves of the attackers, each finding its mark in their foreheads or chests. Within seconds, it was done. Every one of the eleven men in the room dropped to the ground in dead slumps.

Only then did Xue step into the room. The bullets dropped harmlessly to the floor around her, clattering on the wooden boards. She stepped over the lifeless form of the man she recognised as their header - Nagasa - his gloved hands twitching hopelessly in the last throes of life. A patch of crimson was slowly forming on the breast of his fine jacket.

She walked straight for the den's rear door, and it swung open before she reached it. At the far side of the room, Jack was in the process of desperately tugging his trousers on, soap suds still visible in his hair. Upon laying eyes upon her, he paled.

"Ah- Hold on, let's not do anything drastic! I didn't tell them anything! I swear by the spirits, you gotta believe me!"

Behind Xue, the other agents filed silently into the room, their hands clasped and their gaze lowered. She cocked an eyebrow, "Jack, I didn't say anything yet. What makes you think I'm going to do anything drastic? Now, please, let's not lie to each other. I just want to know exactly what you told them."

Jack's jaw slowly dropped. Of course, Xue knew exactly who and what he was referring to, but she found it was effective to let men like him believe they were digging their own graves. It shook their confidence. "I- ah, nothing! They didn't even ask about anything to do with us, Xue-"

"Do not speak my name, scum," she spat at him, eyes narrowing. "And do not attempt to lie to me. You know that you cannot."

"I swe-"

"Ai!" Xue turned her attention to the silent attendant standing against the far wall. "Please, spare Jack my displeasure, and tell me what he told Kato and the creature."

Ai nodded her head without flinching. "A description of the buyer, and the direction of travel she took."

"Wait, this is about that thing?" Jack's expression became one of confusion, "A cursed umbrella? What have you got to do w-"

Jack was abruptly silenced, as a metal shard found itself planted in his forehead. He swayed on his feet for a moment, before collapsing backwards to the ground. Ai frowned.

"With all due respect, ma'am, I am uncertain he had outlived his usefulness."

Xue scowled. "He proved that he is unable to keep the artefact secret, even without knowing its importance. We cannot afford loose ends."

Ai remained frowning, but nodded her head in acceptance. "And the guild members?"

"Will be dealt with. Your station here is relieved, you are to return to headquarters for a new assignment," Xue waited for Ai to acknowledge her with a bow, then turned and strode out of the room. The other two agents followed after her, but after a moment, one spoke. His voice was distorted behind his mask, almost unearthly in its depth.

"Do you wish us to clear the scene?"

Xue tilted her head in thought for a moment, before she smiled slightly and shook her head. "No. Let them remain. It's been a while since we reminded the underworld why they fear us."

The agent nodded in silence, falling back into step as she made her way across the bar and towards the exit.

It would not be long before the carnage was discovered, whether by the underworld or by the police. In either case, the message would be sent.

They were always watching. No matter how well their foes hid, they would know.

The Empress might rule from on high, but in truth, it was the Yin Wei that this nation belonged to.

A fact that she would soon herself come to realise.

"I sure wouldn't want to be Nagasa when the boss gets hold of him. We've been planning this heist for months, and he goes off the grid hours before it?" A trio of figures made their way through the streets of the industrial estates, slipping unnoticed alongside the downtrodden workers who trudged between the factories and warehouses.

They'd been sent by Jirou Nakamura, one of Tianshi City's underworld's big fish, to investigate the radio silence from one of his lieutenants in the lead-up to what promised to be one of their biggest jobs yet. They were hitting the Tianshi Central Bank in a heist that had been years in the making. Security staff had been bought and planet, schematics had been stolen and an elite team of infiltrators had been organised.

Only the closest of Jirou's inner circles knew the full extent of the plan, so that no one man could betray them to the authorities. Most of the others only knew to be in a specific place at a specific time. Orders would come as and when they were needed.

Nagasa was one of the men who knew the plan. And he'd gone silent.

It could just mean that his radio had broken. But it could equally mean that he'd betrayed them. The three that Jirou had sent to find out what had happened were some of his best, but even they weren't aware of the full extent of the plan.

The man who had spoken, blonde-haired and youthful was Takashi Jin, a powerful Shard, whilst the second man with lengthy dark hair was Chen Miyamoto, a Breaker. The third was Nuo, their Farseer. It was their job to find Nagasa and determine whether the plan was compromised.

They were approaching the warehouse in which Nagasa had his hideaway. "See anything in there yet?" Chen looked towards Nuo. The interior of the warehouse was gloomy and difficult to see into from the outside, but the dark would pose little barrier to the eyes of a Farseer.

Nuo wore simple, yet elegant clothing for one who lived in the shadows of this city. Her hair was tucked in a loose bun, bright white and blue highlights, stark change the ebony her hair usually was. Her mismatched eyes were focused on something distant it seemed, as she gazed into what was about to be in front of them.

A soft sigh left her lips and she lifted her parasol to her shoulders, leaning her arms across it nonchalantly. She rarely spoke unless it was important, and her manner would look as though she was unworried to people who didn't know her.

For those who did, they knew she was preparing for an attack.

She moved towards the warehouse door and, with her parasol, pushed the door open to reveal a dead man.

Nuo had moved on further into the warehouse as the other two inspected Bones' body. She blinked and her mismatched eyes shifted which color they had been before, the black shifting to blue, the blue to black. She quietly moved towards the main room of the warehouse, already knowing what she would see.

"Dead." She informed quietly. "Nagasa is dead. So is everyone else, I think." She said.

____

The others followed Nuo down the steps. Takashi whistled at the sight, grimacing. "What the hell happened?"

Chen crouched near the doorway, reaching out to pluck a bullet from the floor. "These bullets never struck anything. They're completely intact. Something stopped them mid-flight," he noted. "Can you tell what killed them, Nuo? What wounds, and what weapons? I've got my suspicions..."

____

Nao walked over to the gloved corpse of Nagasa. She tilted her head, moving her parasol to push his hand from his chest and to move his fine jacket to the side slightly to reveal the hole in his chest. A soft sigh escaped her lips.

She let the jacket fall back in place. And started towards the very back. "Something smaller than a bullet." She said quietly. "No bullet can make a wound that small and that clean and kill a person. Much less several men. They all have similar wounds." She seemed calm despite all the death around her. Nao was use to this. People died around her all the time, and she normally survived. Death was no stranger to her, but Death had not come to claim her either.

____

"Yin Wei," Chen muttered, "This is their work. Their Spiders are trained to kill a man from a street away with a well placed shardshot."

"Seriously? Them?" Takashi's eyes widened, "The hell did they want with Nagasa? If they knew about today, why would they go after him and not anyone else..?"

"I don't know, but the boss needs to know about this. If they're on our scent... this might well have been a warning."

____

Unlike her companions, Nuo seemed calm at the news. It took her a few minutes to return to the front with the others. "No survivors." She informed them quietly before moving towards the entrance. She flung the parasol up to her shoulder and let it rest there. "It is probably for the best. Come now. We're going to be late for tea." She informed the two of them.

Nuo never showed fear. She never seemed really concerned about others. Most of the underworld were unnerved to be around her emotionless-ness. "Perhaps you should call the boss on the way."

____

It was less than fifteen minutes later that the trio found themselves back at the staging point for the robbery. It was an old residential building on the edge of the industrial estates, of the sort normally reserved for factory workers. A few greased palms in the Ministry of Work, however, had turned it into a safehouse.

Nuo and the others were admitted without fuss - their faces were well known, and they'd left less than an hour ago.

Jirou was seated at a table near the back of the building's ground floor, which had been cleared to create a relatively large open space where most of the rest of the crew were gathered. All of them were relatively well known figures in Tianshi's underworld - skilled specialists, or cutthroat gang leaders. That all owed loyalty to Jirou was testament to how big a fish he was.

"You're back. And without Nagasa," Jirou was a surprisingly young man for his notoriety, somewhere in his late twenties or early thirties. His face was clean shaven, and bore a number of scars across it, the largest of which cleft his upper lip near the right corner. His hair was cut short in a slickly neat style, and he wore a well tailored suit, the jacket of which hung open casually. His words did not hold any anger or animosity, rather a quiet intensity that hinted only lightly at the stormy chaos of emotions within.

"Speak."

____

Nuo tut'd as she continued to walk towards her boss, the parasol still on her shoulder. She came up until she was very close to him, her shoulder touching his. "No tea laid out, sir? A girl can be parched, you know.." She pouted in her cute little way but continued on.

"Nagasa is dead, as well as all of his cronies." She reported, brushing past him as he did, although it was gentle and playful as she always did. "Not a single survivor in the place. It was a very clear message." She said, sounding bored as she walked up to a crate and gracefully sat down on it. "We have our suspicions on who it could have been." She sighed.

____

Jirou narrowed his eyes, not moving an inch or turning to follow Nuo's movement. "Did it look like they'd made him talk? Tortured?"

The fact that he didn't react negatively to Nuo's playful and casual manner spoke highly of his regard for her. He didn't quite humour it, however, merely disregarding it. "Who do you suspect?"

____

Nuo shrugged. "To me? Looks like they were killed before they knew what really hit them. There were guns fired from Nagasa's side, but nothing was hit." She blinked and both eyes turned white. "We suspect the Yin Wei." She said in a casual tone.

"But I don't think Nagasa was their primary target either. I think there was something else in mind." Nuo gave another shrug. "I've no proof really but my gut feeling."

____

"Then we go ahead with the plan without him," Jirou said, "Ayame, consider yourself promoted. You'll handle Nagasa's job."

The man stood, leaning onto the table. Before him lay a carefully drawn layout of the Tianshi Central Bank, as well as the surrounding streets. Much of the interior of the bank was heavily annotated.

"Let's go over everything one last time. The bank's security is advanced - Taiyou imported. There are motion sensors, cameras, alarms - everything. That's not to mention the magical protections designed to ward against Jumpers and the like. Our first priority is getting into the security room, where Blitz can work his magic, without raising the alarm."

A red-haired man with a stocky build and a sleazy look to him flashed a grin as his name was mentioned. He sported what could only be described as a good effort at a mohawk, along with somewhat worse effort at a beard. He gave the impression of a man who didn't spend a lot of time outside. Or moving. At all. "You get me in there," he said, "I'll get every camera in the place wiped and every alarm shut off before you can say 'that was easy'."

Jirou raised a hand to quiet him, before carrying on. "That means a small strike team moving in with him before the rest of us go. If you trigger the alarms before Blitz has shut them down, the operation's history. By the time the main group heads in the front and shuts the place down, we need the alarms the tellers and the security run for to be useless. Now, comms... All of that is useless if any of the security can get on their radios, or some asshole can pick up an office phone and call the police. Another team will be setting up a block on communications while you guys are shutting the alarms off. That means jamming all their frequencies and cutting the cord on the bank's telephone links."

The plan went on into greater detail, with each aspect of the bank's security analysed and a solution provided. The routines of targets in the bank with the correct security credentials to bypass doors, the plants they had on the staff, police response times... it had been a plan years in the making, and if everyone played their part, then it seemed flawless.

"We leave in an hour," Jirou finished. "Get your gear and your teams ready. It's time for a payday."

Bones' corpse lay sprawled in plain view where the side of a shipping container had been torn open by force. Of course, what was in plain view to a Farseer wasn't so plain to others, and it wasn't until they'd moved further inside that the two men noticed the sight.

"Shit," Takashi swore, "This place got hit hard."

"Quiet," Chen hissed. "Don't alert anyone who might still be here to our presence. Tread lightly."

The two pressed forwards, but let Nuo take the lead. She'd be more likely to spot any danger than they were.
