Treisgar the Monk
Aliases: Known as "The Monk" to Old World population. Often called "Trei" by friends.
Age: 125
Race: "Man" from Old World
Height/Weight: 6' 3" at 212 pounds of muscle.

Basic Appearance/ General Info: He has an overall average appearance. Fair white skin with long, black hair. His face is usually clean shaven if he can help it.

He wears the traditional blue robes of the abbot of a Glasaf monastic temple. The sleeves of the robes end near his elbows and above his ankles to allow for clean movement. The blue belt and cape are signs of his position in the monastic order. He wears a rounded conical hat that is held to his head via a silk strap. Wooden sandals are his preferred shoe-type.

Various areas on his skin are tattooed with magical runes. A complex string of runes is tattooed around the sides of his face. This particular rune-chain helps him achieve deeper states of meditation more quickly. It is used primarily when he needs to achieve deeper levels of concentration, but a battle is starting and he cannot enter the meditative state quickly enough.

Additional runes tattooed on the body improve muscular strength, breathing, endurance, blood flow, and speed. Some of the simple runes are in an "always on" state, which gives them a faint blue glow. Most of the others he can activate through thought. The most advanced runes on his body he cannot, as of yet, and they require incantation.

Finally, for his weapon, he carries a long pole. He is extremely skilled in the Guro martial arts taught at all Glasaf temples. In combat, he uses mostly hand-to-hand combat and sometimes he will use his pole. He is trained in the art of swordplay as well because of his military experience prior to joining the monastic order. However, he carries no swords and has not used one in quite some time. So he's probably pretty rusty.

Though Treisgar is extremely proficient in meditation and Guro martial arts (the two pillars of Glasaf teachings) most other Glasaf abbots believe he should not hold his current position. The previous abbot did not appoint Treisgar, but rather he earned that position by being the last member of the order alive after a devastating accident. According to their ways, he was given the position and charged with bringing in new students.

Basic Personality: Treisgar is a relatively calm and collected individual. He strives to spend plenty of time each day training his mind through meditation and his body through Guro. He is rarely rude, over confident, demanding, or easily offended. Of course, as a man, he can fall victim to all of these personality flaws. For example, he can be a bit sensitive when discussing or debating the accident that took place at his Glasaf temple prior to him becoming abbot.

His role as abbot has given him a somewhat protective mindset. He strives to protect his students, the population of the Old World, and the fellow members of the Heroes' Guild. Though, at times, other heroes can have a problem with this attitude. Particularly, the young and confident heroes can find him boring and strict.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Corf Dur Martial Arts: This is the first form of martial arts mastered by Treisgar during his time in the East Mountain Army prior to becoming a monk. It roughly translates to "Steel Body" martial arts. The focus was to train the body to take as much pain as possible and to deliver single, powerful blows. Training consisted of daily beatings, endurance exercises, resting with heavy weights on the body, bare hand combat against stone and metal. Basically, it pushes the body to its limits of pain while building bone density, but it is about more than just that.

It also focuses on improving striking and crushing power as well as flexibility. By combining these things Treisgar can fight in a way where he intentionally leaves certain areas of his body open to attack, but only so it puts him in a better position for a powerful counter attack. The foe will typically take the opportunity to strike the area he leaves open without knowing it is all part of his Corf Dur training. Counter attacks are usually fatal.

  • Guro Martial Arts: This is the second form of martial arts studied by Treisgar during his time as a Glasaf monk. It is a common form of martial arts taught at all Glasaf temples, but it can be fairly broad at times with variations occurring from one temple to the next. Guro focuses on coordination, flexibility, and precise striking, typically with closed palms. There is hand-to-hand, weapon-to-weapon, weapon-to-hand, and hand-to-weapon training. Hand-to-weapon training uses open palm techniques and more footwork.Treisgar is trained with the sword and pole as weapons, but now only uses the pole.

Guro works hand-in-hand with Glasaf meditation. It can be through internal meditation or external meditation. Unlike Corf Dur, Guro has never truly been mastered. The more one learns of Guro the more they realize they know so little. This is why students of Guro train each and every day: so that they can learn what they do not know and then know what they have not learned.

  • Glasaf Meditation: Though this could be considered part of Guro, I'll keep them separate for the sake of simplicity. There are four primary stages of meditation. Mastering a stage means the person has the ability to enter it and exit at will and then to learn from that experience. Treisgar has only mastered the first stage, but he can enter the second stage. He is working on mastering the second stage before attempting to enter the third. Entering a stage he has not mastered can take some time.

All stages are powered only by the brain. They are not magical at all and have no effect on the outside world. Only on the brain and the body because the body is controlled by the brain. The stages are:
    1. No Pain. Only Bliss: In this stage, many physical feelings and emotions are replaced with bliss. This includes physical pain as well as sorrow. It can help to deal with pain experienced during combat or in various situations. However, extreme pain can break this away because it would create extreme bliss. For example, if an arm was cut off, it would break his meditative state because the bliss would be too much. Once broken, he would feel the full force of the pain.
    2. A Unified Body: In this stage, the mind, limbs, and sensory organs are working in perfect unison at an intensified speed. It improves reaction time as well as coordination. Being in this stage requires also being in the first stage. If the first stage is broken, then this stage is broken as well.
    3. A Divided Mind: In this stage, the mind can section itself to have full control of organs, limbs, and sensory organs independently. They still work with improved capability as with the previous stage. A simple example of this would be writing something different with four pens. One in each hand and one for each foot between the toes. Treisgar has never reached this stage.
    4. No Pain. No Bliss: In this stage, the body and mind feel nothing. He also has the benefit of the previous two stages. This is considered the ultimate stage for Guro martial arts. The user feels no pain, no distractions, has improved functionality and independent control of all sections of the body. Thus, extreme pain or bliss cannot break this stage and it is the only stage where a previous stage becomes inactive. (stage 1). At reaching this stage a person can be considered for an Abbot position. Treisgar is technically an abbot, but has never achieved this stage.
    5. It is said there are stages beyond this that only certain masters have reached. But there is no reason to believe such rumors.
  • Magic Abilities: Treisgar has a strong interest in magic because he believes it can help him improve his martial arts beyond what normal people can achieve. It was something his previous abbot was not fond of at all, nor are most Glasaf monks. Treisgar uses his magic through the form of runes. He has the following runes tattooed on his body.
    1. Meditative Rune: This is the rune on his face. When activated it will let him immediately enter any meditative stage he has achieved in the past. For now, he only uses it to enter the second stage because he has already mastered the first stage and can enter it on command.
    2. Strength Rune: This rune is in an always-on state. It's a simple rune that increases muscle strength and density. Only a slight boost in strength.
    3. Breath Rune: This rune is in an always-on state. It's a simple rune that slightly improves blood flow and oxygen delivery. Makes a minor difference.
    4. Speed Rune: This rune can be activated through thought. It's slightly more complex than the rest. It basically improves running speed. Isn't used much.
    5. Iron Fist Rune: This is a fairly complex rune that takes up a decent part of his torso. It must be activated via words. It changes the atomic composition of a hand of choice to iron. Veins, muscle, bones, and such are changed to iron as well, which requires instantaneous rerouting of vascular system in the wrist. Makes for a powerful blow, but overall is uncomfortable and painful for Treisgar too. Sometimes used as a finisher.
