United States Military Structure

U.S. Department of Defense
The United States Department of Defense is the controlling body of the highest ranking military personnel that preside over the entirety of the United States Military. It is headed by the Secretary of Defense. The Secretary of Defense has a number of Joint Chiefs who serve as his advisors as well as overseeing their respective roles, which is divided up equally amongst them. Under the Secretary of Defense are the six uniformed Military branches: the Army, the Marines, the Navy, Air Force, and the Mage branch.
The Overall motto of the military is “Non sibi sed patriae” which means “Not for self, but for country.”

United States Army
The United States Army (USA) is the largest branch of the United States Armed Forces and performs land-based military operations. It is the branch which forms the “backbone” of the military. The Army’s primary strength is its versatility, covering many roles in combat and support operations. The Army provides the infantry, armored cavalry, aerial cavalry, and artillery to land based operations. It uses its overwhelming firepower to defeat much larger enemy forces. "This We'll Defend" is the official motto of the Army.

United States Marine Corps
The United States Marine Corps (USMC), also known as the United States Marines, is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for conducting amphibious operations with the United States Navy. Despite their primary objective to be the amphibious soldiers of the US, the Marines often are used in a variety of roles. They often use the more advanced tactics and rely on smaller, more highly trained units of soldiers. Where the Army is the hammer with overwhelming force, the Marines are the knife with tactical precision. “Semper Fidelis,” meaning “Forever Faithful” is the motto of the Marines.

United States Navy
The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. The U.S. Navy is one of the largest and most capable navies in the world. The US Navy provides the naval role similar to the Army, only on water: overwhelming firepower and advanced tech. The Navy motto is "Semper Fortis" which means “Always Courageous.”

United States Air Force
The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial and space warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the U.S. Armed Forces on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947. It is the second most recent branch of the U.S. Armed Forces to be formed. The USAF is the largest and one of the most technologically advanced air forces in the world. Its motto is “Uno Ab Alto” – “One Over All.”

Mage Branch
The United States Mages (USMG) is a United States Armed Forces branch which broadly covers every mage in the United States. Unlike the other branches, mages work simultaneously with the other branches, with mages often being embedded in units of other branches. In addition, the career path of mages is vastly different than the “mundane” branches. Its motto is "Semper Sudii,” meaning “Forever in pursuit of knowledge.”

Role
The Mages of the United States Armed Forces perform a variety of roles that can cover everything the other branches do. As such, the mages are often embedded in, or a member of, units in the other branches. Flight based mages often work with the Air Force while Artillery/Shield mages work hand and hand with either the Army or the Navy. Each and every mage serves a distinct and specialized role in the US military, but there are a few who are far more versatile than their counterparts.
While there are many types of mages and endless magical potentials, the mages generally fall into broad, but distinct, categories: Infantry Mages, Offensive Mages, Defensive Mages, Aerial Mages, Support Mages, and General Mages.

Infantry Mages are mages who typically fight on the frontlines alongside the infantry. They often are more close ranged than their counterparts, but provide exceptional magical firepower to compliment the firepower of the Army. As stated, they most often serve with the Army’s infantry, but a few work with the Marines.
Offensive Mages is a Mage who provides overwhelming firepower. They can serve in the Army, Marines, and Naval branches, depending on their specialty. For example, the Artillery Mage known as General Roy “Nuke” William serves in the Army Branch as he typically provides long range artillery support.

Defensive Mages are mages who specialize in defensive magic. Some are able to provide huge domes that provide protection to soldiers near them while others are able to cast smaller barriers. Regardless, they serve in Army, Marine, and Naval branches, shielding either soldiers, ships, or even entire bases.

Aerial mages are mages who are equipped with the specialized flight suit, which allows their bodies to handle extreme speeds while utilizing their flight magic. Aerial mages are often able to use both offensive and defensive magic with their flight powers, giving them nigh-unstoppable air superiority. All aerial mages serve in the Air Force.

Support mages are mages who typically provide healing or enhancement magic to troops. They are often paired with Infantry, Offensive, or Defensive mages, providing their specialized support magic to enable increased combat effectiveness to their partner. They serve whatever branch their partner serves in.
General Mages are mages who have no specialty. They often serve in the Army where their versatility fits best, but can serve in other branches.

Career Path and Ranks
Unlike other branches, when a magic user joins up in the military, they go through an intensive training to sort out their magical capabilities. After graduating the basic 10 to 12 week magical boot camp, they then are giving a two month training camp in the mundane branch they will be assigned to. After intensive training and evaluation, the magic user is given the rank of “Mage.” The rank of mage is typically on par with Corporal, or its equivalent, of the mundane branches. From there, the mage uses the ranks that their mundane branch uses. After the mage obtains their first rank, they are allowed to move up their mundane branches’ rank system at an accelerated pace, taking just under half the time a normal soldier would. However, even if they go to a Officer School such as West Point, a mage cannot move past the rank of Sergeant, or the branches’ equivalent, without attending a magical school such as Arcadia Academy.

Once the mage graduates their choice of Academy, their given rank is on determinate with their Magic rank of their academy. D rank mages are given the military rank 2nd Lieutenant, Cs are given 1st Lieutenant, B rank Mages are given Captain and A rank mages are given the rank of Major. In addition, a mage who is a rank of Corporal can even attend an Academy and skip the NCO ranks and jump straight to their equivalent magical rank. This causes mages to skip the age, skill, and good behavior requirements that mundane officers would have to reach said ranks, also causing a good deal of resentment to officers who feel mages didn’t “earn” their ranks. However, a mage reaching Colonel or General is extremely difficult, as proceeding further than Major requires intensive six month camp and three week training (Similar to BUDS) in which 99% of attendants drop out or fail, though they can retry the next year. Due to this system, many mages are stuck at the rank of Captain or Major and obtain them at MUCH earlier ages than mundane troops, increasing the resentment.

Mages wear a variation of their assigned branches’ combat uniform, if they wish. They are granted more leniency than normal troops, but must have the US patch, Rank, Mage role, and other clearly displayed.
