Is a highschool rolplay too cliche?

To be honest I just like a casual highschool rp. However Id like to hear a second opinion, so please do so, and also add what would make it more interesting to join.

I think that if the roleplay is literally just "We're all in highschool go", then it's cliche. Just give it some kind of twist, like "We're all in our school play" or "We're a group of seniors all aiming for valedictorian" or "We go to school together but a magic thing happened and now we're a superhero group on top of being highschoolers"

Or don't listen to me, I've never run a highschool RP before. The casual simple ones can be just as fun, if the group is dedicated to keeping it going.

Thank you for the advise!

Yeah, unless there's something specifically coming up that has potential for some exceptionally juicy drama, it gets pretty 'ehh' after a bit. People write to have a different life than their own and public school is fairly mundane on its own. I don't know what your experience was, but mine was that it was a boring, boring place with some really bad drama, worse comebacks and a little too much stress.

Other than the aforementioned events, try messing with the setting. You make it a private school, if you want to start off with something basic. If you set it in a different universe or timeline, or some sort of specialist school it gets better. Switch it around on any level other; try to avoid a situation that mirrors real life too well. A few darker settings have worked for me in the past, like schools for troubled or mentally unstable kids. If you want to keep it a bit less violent or just a little less 'real' (Meaning too dark and serious, but high fantasy also applies,) try a modern fantasy where magic is taught and non-humans are welcome to join. Those are all some pretty easy places to get started with.

The irony is that I have seen far more magic highschool rolepays than regular old highschool.

I see people hear saying they don't like highschool without a twist. Which is fine. However, so is liking regular old highschool.

Whether something is cliché or not is irrelevant. Every storyline has been done to death so you are better off shooting for execution rather than originality. What matters is that you can find people to participate in something you enjoy.

Magic High School is super tired. No more of it, please.
If you can make it interesting, then by all means, but at its roots, it is a very tired and overdone idea which rarely has any spice beyond the whole "oh but they're wizards" trope or whatever.

I think that there's nothing wrong with cliches from time to time and that people are sometimes to worried about being "original". A normal old high school roleplay can be really fun in my experience, especially when you can go all out with the cliches and just have fun with it and not worry so much about writing a perfect novel in every post. A twist is also fun and can give you more material to work with, but there's nothing wrong with just going vanilla.

(I'd totally be up for such a roleplay if people are interested too? c: )

If you like it, then you should go for it! I don't know if this would sound a bit simplistic, but if you like something then that means there's someone out there who also like it. Besides, a lot of people prefer to stick with something they're familiar with, so you might actually end up with more people than you might have had otherwise.

Honestly don't worry about it. If you're having fun and if other people are having fun...who cares?

Write whatever most inspires you, however simple or complex, unique or generic. True passion and care for something will always outweigh any sort of perceived artistic merit or quality.

Billions of people have come before you and baked a cake. Cliche? Unoriginal? Yeah, but does that stop you from having it?
It's the combination of ingredients that make the dish, not just one.
Just because cake is common doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.
Other people can miss out if they want to.

Wheel was invented so many years ago. But, even today people are coming with different types of wheels because it makes some difference to some people. And how does it matter, if YOU need wheels? Like how I am saying the same thing as the cake guy(@Kaos ) just in a different way. So, unless you bring back the same stone wheel from all those years ago, people will still buy your wheels. Even stone wheels are used somewhere, maybe.

I have seen some pretty interesting high school roleplay's, so if you want to do it, then do it. The only reason I typically do not do them is because a lot of people tend to make their characters have immature thoughts and actions and it sometimes makes the writing seem immature. It is not normally purposeful though because if they are in high school then they are naturally going to be more immature. However, it is possible to avoid this and have a successful high school roleplay. Cliché is a broad term, you can never label something as cliché because a lot of things are reused and put into a different perspective, so I would not say that a high school roleplay is cliché.
