I'm gonna be super basic and say Hamilton and The Book of Mormon. I also dig Rent, Sweeney Todd (not the movie), Little Shop of Horrors and Les Miserables.
The Martian was super average. I think the book is considered good because of it's attention to detail and scientific fact. But the characters and the way they act is just... cliche? I don't think Andy Weir is all that great a writer. His prose doesn't have anything special to it I don't feel...
Gritty, dark horror is top tier. Like, stuff with elements like body horror, psychological horror, etc. The Thing, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, Darkwood, The Descent, all that stuff is great.
"You know, it's funny... when you look at someone through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags." - Wanda, Bojack Horseman
Not even the best quote from Bojack Horseman. Amazing show.
