It's not exactly a requirement to have pictures, it's mostly due to a RP'ers preference. The use of pictures helps out a lot when people play as Canon Characters from TV Shows, Video Games, Anime etc etc, as most of the time there will be pictures of their facial expressions which helps a lot.

If you open the Chat box at the bottom, go to Settings at the top of the box and scroll down until it shows a box saying "Disable Chat." Hope that helps ^^
