I have to recommend Glen Cook's The Black Company. Its quite a good mix of medieval fantasy and some sci-fi with modern aspects of a Mercenary soldier of fortune company of men and women. Also, the lovely noir detective Phillip Marlowe, written in books by Raymond Chandler... love the style.
