[OOC] Endurn: Heart of the Alauum

OH: I should state this very clearly:

I have a system of rewarding active players. I do this because, well, active players should be rewarded and it creates incentive for inactive players to be more active in the IC. In my roleplays, your writing in the real world (i.e. posts) directly dictates the amount of things your character is doing in the IC world. If you're not posting, the plot must go on regardless, so it's just assumed that your character has been more idle than usual through training, conversation, etc. It just makes sense once we get into things and see character development and skill development for some players and very little for others, despite them all having spent the same amount of time in the plot.

So, I give stat points for posts, meaning the more you write, the stronger your character gets. Posts get you points ACROSS THE BOARD. This means all skills increase by one point at a time, save select abilities like fabrication which the three elven races can't do, etc. The point system is as follows:

Regular Play:
1 Point = 4 <3 Paragraph Posts
OR
1 point = 2 >3 Paragraph Posts

Events:
1 Point = 2 <3 Paragraph Posts
1 Point = 1 <3 Paragraph Post

I also add specific points if I see your character developing in a certain area (so, maybe you regularly write about your char working on a type of mana. I notice that and apply it.)

I'll usually say "Event start" and you'll know, but sometimes if I'm in a good mood i'll just apply event point status to the point counting when I'm tallying them.

Also: I'll try and tally the point at the end of every page, maybe at the end of every 2nd or 3rd page, depending on how busy I get :D

Almiun
-----Patriarchal, traditional, spiritual, reverent towards the wilds, close-knit, defensive, noble, comfortable with war, reject varan.
Dhomhara
-----Matriarchal (East) and Patriarchal (West), proud, conservative (west) and liberal (east), warring, little care for the balance of the wilds, defensive, skeptical of outsiders, reject varan (west), accept varan (east)

Oh boy and there are three of these in total...

Sylvuin
-----Matriarchal, nature-driven, open-minded, respectful of traditions, devoted to caring for the wilds, never wasteful, peaceful, neutral views of varan.

the three "meeeh, varan", where it is open

Odakkai
----- Egalitarian, pacifist, welcoming, balance-driven, peaceful, nature-driven, liberal with some strong traditions, becoming more accepting of varan

the two Odakkai

And the Varan that will be there like "o.o"

Those are cultural generalizations.nothing to say the individuals won't be different, more lenient, etc.

How would one 'work on a type of mana'? More specifically, if I wanted to train Alathon in his ability to commune with nature and become more used to his ability to inhabit birds how would I go about doing so? Would it just be repeatedly doing it?

Well, hold off on all that for now. I have a tutorial section for the ic plot XD it'll explain mana training and all that. Plus, at the beginning, when the souls enter our chars, their soul abilities will be locked :)

So, this is what I have so far

Name
Ashyrn Brymaris

Race and Culture
Syluvian, Ityra Cultire

Age and Gender
42, female

Hometown
Kallamere
Isire (Current location)

Mage Spirit
Mage of Offense

Appearance
Ashryn has chocolate brown hair that has a slightly reddish tinge to it, and it appears to almost glow in the sunlight. Her hair is fairly long, stopping somewhere around her midriff, although she has shorter pieces in the front so she can tuck it under her ears. She has a small braid that starts slightly above her left ear and loops down just below the right before stopping. Her skin tone is what would probably be described as a warm beige color excluding her left leg where she has a long scar that’s somewhat pink in color. Ashryn stands fairly tall, although a little bit shorter than the average Sylvuin. Ashryn tends to wear greens, warm browns, tans, and golden-yellows.

Personality
Curious, Protective, Loyal, Energetic, Determined
Ashryn has always been a curious person at heart, even if she tries to act disinterested. She always asked a ton of questions when she was young, and that never changed as she got older- if anything, her need to know more increased. She’s extremely energetic when she wants to be and sometimes will randomly become somewhat hyper, tapping her fingers on everything and bouncing repeatedly for no apparent reason. She throws herself at things that she’s passionate about, sometimes to the point of running herself to the ground. Ashryn is also a very determined person to the point it can get annoying. If she wants something extremely badly, chances are she’s going to get it eventually. Ashryn is also extraordinarily protective of the people she cares about. If you hurt someone she cares about, as soon as she’s done making sure they’re okay, Ashryn will hound after them and yell at them until she has everything out of her (and this can take quite awhile). If what you do is really bad, she won’t bother yelling at you, just slap them and walk off. She is also a very loyal person if she cares about someone. She’s not someone you need to watch and make sure they’re being honest- if she cares, she won’t lie to you about anything big.

History

Strengths
  • Creative: Ashryn has always been very creative, especially when it came to her sketching. She has a notebook with pages upon pages of overflowing artwork.

  • Persistence: She definitely has never been one to just give up and watch. If she’s set her mind to it, Ashryn will pursue what she wants until she gets it, although occasionally she’s stopped to go chase after something she sees as more interesting.

  • Loyal: Ashryn is very loyal to the people she loves- she always has been. If a person insults a family member or a friend she immediately will defend them and also make a poke at the insulter.

  • Brave: Although she’s easily startled by a tap on the shoulder or a loud noise, she isn’t a very easy person to scare. When she was younger, she always loved adventure, sometimes purposefully seeking an adrenaline rush by doing potentially dangerous things. When she was younger, she would climb dangerously high or participate in somewhat risky activities for fun.
  • Alert: It’s fairly hard to sneak up on Ashryn- her hearing is extremely good and she can usually hear people coming, as well as see their shadow. She’s not entirely sure why, but she’s also very sensitive to touch. If you randomly poke her shoulder, she’ll sometimes flinch. If you really alarm her, she’ll jump back and pull herself into a defensive position, sometimes accidentally hitting the person that poked her. It’s probably better to just call her name.

Weaknesses

  • Low self esteem: Ashryn doesn’t have the worst self esteem, but it’s not exactly good either. She doubts herself often and also underestimates her own skills, thinking that she’s terrible at something even though she’s actually not terrible. Although she doesn’t always doubt herself at every turn, it can and has been a problem.

  • Fear of Heights: After a particular failed stunt, she developed a fear of heights. She doesn’t mind tree climbing for some reason, but everything else is one big, fat no. If she realizes she’s up high she just freezes up and stares blankly ahead, frozen in terror.

  • Slow to Trust: She’s not entirely untrusting, but it tends to take a very long time for her to fully trust others. It either takes something that makes her trust them or they’ll just have to wait- it’s near impossible to try to get her to trust a person faster.

  • Not really a “plan” person: Yes, she does have a plan, but it’s not really all that detailed. Really, it’s missing so many details it shouldn’t even be called a plan- more like an outline of one. Ashryn tends to give herself a basic guideline to follow and just wing it from there, sometimes ditching the outline altogether. If given a detailed plan she’ll probably follow it, but if she feels like she has a better idea she’ll ditch it for the moment.

  • Emotion Concealer: It will be very hard to tell if she’s hurting since she tends to hide it. She prefers not to burden others with her own issues and will go about resolving it by herself, which sometimes is a very bad idea.

Skills

  • Archery: Ashryn was taught archery by her father when she was a bit younger and she’s grown to be fairly decent at it. While she’s nowhere close to an expert, she knows enough to defend herself and get food.

  • Daggers: While it’s not exactly something she’s good at, if something comes too close for her to shoot she’s capable of defending herself. She knows enough to get rid of anything too close, but Ashryn prefers not needing to use one.

  • Artist: Well, she does do it for a living, but that aside, Ashryn would like to consider herself a good artist. She always liked drawing when she was younger, and that never changed as she grew older. She prefers using pencils over paints, although she will paint sometimes.
  • Hunting: With some help from her parents, Ashryn has become a proficient hunter, able to shoot things and clean them effectively. While she’s not a very good cook, Ashryn can definitely hunt well enough to get food. She primarily shoots things, although she can do a few basic traps.

  • Tree Climbing: For some reason she does this a lot- but if ever needed, Ashryn can scramble up a tree ridiculously fast and will also be perfectly content with staying there as long as needed.

Skills: (Learned skills, not personality traits. E.g. Horsemanship, swordsmanship, archery, hunting, stamina, etc.)
Weaknesses: (Both physical and psychological weaknesses and personality flaws. E.g. Fears, ego issues, social disorders, injuries, etc.)

SOUL ABILITIES
1st Soul Ability: Weapon Manipulation: Can take 5 weapons in the vicinity and do whatever she wants with them (form a shield, fling them away, hurl them at enemies, whatever).
2nd Soul Ability: Deflection: Causes oncoming projectiles to be sent back to the source.
3rd Soul Ability: Spirit Weapon - Summon the strength of your Hero’s Soul into a weapon that cannot be broken or lost. Initially, the weapon cannot be summoned at all. The user simply enchants their own weapon to make it stronger and can summon it from several feet away. With time, however, the user need not carry a weapon at all as the weapon can appear when desired and as such, can never be lost. The user must have immense skill with the selected weapon form to be able to forge it as a spirit weapon.
4th Soul Ability: Army of Mine - Gain the ability to summon a small army of mana-based entities that take on the form of a familiar creature or race. Initially, only one or two can be summoned to fight. They are weak and only remain for a short while. With time, the user can summon up to two dozen warriors, each of which is powerful and remains for several days, if needed.
5th Soul Ability: [Given upon CS completion]

Culture Specific Perk: Swift runners of the plains, your kind are faster than any others.
Race Specific Perk 1: Resurrection: Bring a fallen comrade back to life at the cost of almost complete mana depletion. This ability requires immense mana rituals to complete before and after the process.
Race specific Perk 2: Nimble Above and Below: Whether you are on the ground or high in the trees, you move swiftly, nimbly, and with great ease. It isn't often you're felled by means of tripping or stumbling.
Race Specific Perk 3: True North: You never have to wonder which direction is north.

OTHER
Distastes: Ashryn isn’t a fan of really bright colors and despises hot weather, especially if it’s humid. She also doesn’t like sleeping around others since she irrationally thinks they’re watching her.
Preferences: Cold weather, shades of blue, and animals.
Aspirations: Ashryn really wants to go back into art school again and pick up different things so she can draw with things aside from pencils, pens, and paint. She’d like to become at least a little bit known for her artwork.

Looking great so far! Once you get your History done i'll go over it formally but the only real issue I can see here is that the first soul ability needs more explanation. Why 5 weapons? Can't anyone make a shield by using something to block, fling/hurl a weapon at someone? I think this soul ability needs to be thought out more.

The second one is great, you just need to be sure to write out a longer description of each that includes how the user gets better at the ability, what kind of limitations there are at first, and what skills they'll gain in that ability as they increase their skill level.

A suggestion for an offense ability, if you can't work out the kinks on the first soul ability: she could convert an ally. So, one of the foes could be made to fight for her, instead of against her. That makes it easy enough to develop, only weak foes can be turned at first and only for a while, but the better she gets, the stronger the foe she can change and the longer it'll fight for her. The development factor would be like, knowledge of battle. You know? The more experienced she gets as a warrior, the more she understands her enemies in battle and the more easily she can turn them into allies.

I'll hopefully have it done by tonight. I was gonna focus on doing an Illos post first, but Illos isn't waiting on me to continue lol. Sorry I've been inactive suddenly, we had to move and dismantle our desktops and my Chromebook is dead so I couldn't access the internet outside of my phone.. and God I hate writing long posts on mobile.

Okay I think I have it done. I mean, it's technically Saturday so I didn't really meet the ETA thing I set, but whatever- it's pretty much done. Do you guys think there are any last edits I need to make?

History
Ashryn was born in Kallamere to her mother, Lydia, and her father Sythaeryn, her little sister Celaena born two years after. Aside from archery lessons from her father, Ashryn spent most of her time thrill-seeking, constantly trying to drag her sister into it as well. When she was fifteen, she attempted to scale a rocky outcropping as a dare from a friend, but she lost her footing and fell off. Ever since that point she absolutely refused to climb anything except for a tree again. She moved away from her pursuit of thrill-seeking and started to draw instead, seeking for something a little bit quieter than her previous habits, but she quickly grew bored and decided to resume archery with her father. Years went by as she fell into a comfortable cycle, learning how to hunt and shoot from her father and releasing her imagination into her art. When she was twenty, Ashryn was bored with what she’d been doing- sure, she’d hunted a bit, she’d had friends to talk to, and she’d painted and drew, but she wanted to do something more, something better. While she didn’t want to go back into her old adventures yet, her friend Thalia offered something that seemed surreal- trying to get into Emedia Academy, a well known school for artists. They both applied, and to her surprise, they were both accepted. Both of them moved to Isire in order to be closer to the academy and studied there for four years before leaving. After she left, she decided to visit her father with Celaena. He was extremely old at this point and died a few days afterwards. She went on with her life in Isire, putting her father’s lessons to work during her job as an archery instructor as well as using her talent to hunt for food. In between her hunting and visits to friends and family, Ashryn used the four years of schooling and even more years behind it to sell and create more artwork, partially fulfilling her dreams as she became a part-time artist.

SOUL ABILITIES
1st Soul Ability: War Cry: Makes enemies dazed after a loud shout- can be any kind, it just needs to be loud. The effect of the cry will daze nearby enemies at a max of 3. The cry will only affect warriors that are new to battle or less skilled opponents. Skilled fighters will be completely unaffected, but beginners will tend to stumble about and have terrible aim. As the user’s strength and skill grows, they can eventually render a fairly contempt warrior to a confused mess for a minute or two, as well as 2-3 others. Newer fighters are always easier to use this on, and the user will be able to do it to more of them.
2nd Soul Ability: Deflection: Causes oncoming projectiles to be sent back to the source. At first the user can only send back 2-3 projectiles, and it takes some practice to get all of them to hit the target- sometimes they just get flung into the trees. With practice and time, the user can send quite a few back to the source and accurately hit them.
3rd Soul Ability: Spirit Weapon - Summon the strength of your Hero’s Soul into a weapon that cannot be broken or lost. Initially, the weapon cannot be summoned at all. The user simply enchants their own weapon to make it stronger and can summon it from several feet away.
Aspirations: Ashryn wants to go back to Emedia Academy and study for two more years, then drop out of her job as an archery instructor and become a full-time artist, and it wouldn’t be bad if she was a well-known one too. She also wouldn’t mind a few more adventures- after all, it would be quite a shame if the only exciting stories she could tell were about her childhood.
Why have up to three and not just a set range?
