Mission 1: Emergence of the Children of Eve

In the lead-up, all of the surrounding raider enclaves had been eliminated, save for one: Bosho’s Raiders. Bosho’s Raiders were thus the next—and final—target. With their elimination, Bunker Chicago could turn and focus its attention on building the infrastructure necessary to reinstate a fully functioning civilization. A joint task force of Coalition and Old Guard forces, combined with mercenary elements, organized to engage Bosho’s Raiders. Three days before they left to fight, a grey fog came to choke most of the old city ruins.

The only notable group during this event was Carolyn’s Squad—a mix of Old Guard loyalists and mercenaries, assigned under Carolyn Antoinettes command. Her objective was to gain information about the fog, and be part of a core unit behind a scouting force known as Arrowhead. Upon entering the fog, it became clear that certain technologies, like motion trackers and heat detectors, ceased functioning correctly, or had their range cut significantly.

Arrowhead was wiped out within minutes of entering the fog. As some of Carolyn’s squad started to break and flee, she was forced to retreat. They managed to rescue one silent survivor, and managed to get halfway out of the city before being intercepted by the listeners of the fog. They introduced themselves as the Children of Adam and Eve, and gave Carolyn a warning not to interfere with them and to leave them alone from that point forward. Carolyn and her squad were then allowed to leave.

It is assumed, though not confirmed, that Bosho and most of his raiders were completely wiped out.

The Results

Both The Old Guard and The Coalition took significant casualties. At least 40% of all forces did not return from the fog. The silent survivor vanished from sight and eluded being tracked or found, and Carolyn was forced into reconsidering her previous stances. Tension toward listeners mounted, with some showing them sympathy, and others being filled with fear and tepidness at their mere sight. Whispers started to filter around the bunker over the next couple of weeks, as some listeners started to grow disillusioned with all of the factions of the bunker. U-ARM prepared its weaponry, and Morai filtered away from sight.

Morai prepared the Red Star cell in the area for combat.

U-ARM engaged a single listener who had left the fog—which had, at this point, changed colour to an orange hue. All U-ARM forces that engaged the listener from the fog were wiped out, though they had managed to wound him. U-ARM prepared to move in to take him back, as the Children of Eve momentarily stopped their infiltration and recruitment of Bunker Chicago to attempt a rescue operation. Red Star, The Coalition, and The Old Guard prepared to move out to take the wounded man, each for themselves to interrogate.

Mission 2: New Friends, New Enemies

The Old Guard and The Coalition arrived, with the Children of Eve masquerading as part of The Coalition’s numbers and Red Star infiltrating from the remaining functional sewer network. The Children of Eve rapidly split away from the main Coalition force, intending to rescue their ally.

U-ARM burst out of hiding and attacked The Coalition and Old Guard forces simultaneously as the Children of Eve reached the wounded listener first. Eve snapped him back to his senses, and Ezekiel awoke to realize who he was once again. Red Star stole away the prisoner from the Children of Eve and blew out the floor from underneath them, causing them to become disconnected from their ally. The Old Guard then engaged Red Star, and in the ensuing chaos, a Coalition agent stole the prisoner away and threw him to Coalition forces before being gunned down.

It was a difficult situation to follow, with each side taking casualties. A large beast emerged from the orange fog, and began to rampage across the encounter zone. It disabled Carolyn’s tank, and took off Jenive’s leg, forcing both forces into a bloodied retreat—though The Coalition secured itself a mission objective: They took home the prisoner.

Or, at least, they almost did.

Just on the outskirts of the city ruins, The Old Guard forces intercepted and surrounded The Coalition. Both sides were evenly matched, though in her state of extreme blood loss, Jenive agreed to surrender the prisoner to The Old Guard forces.

All surviving factions—Red Star, U-ARM, The Coalition, The Old Guard, and Children of Eve—returned to Bunker Chicago.

The Last Two Weeks

As a result of hostile actions from The Old Guard toward The Coalition, tensions between the two factions have risen. While The Coalition claims to have control over the colony, and maintains control over the bunker itself, the laboratory, and the food lines, The Old Guard has practical control over the machine shop district, and over much of the housing districts. The two remain officially allied, but in every other way, there is a clear delineation between districts controlled by The Old Guard, and districts controlled by The Coalition. They have both deployed a constant presence of heavily armed and armoured soldiers on the streets, with borders between the two having guards standing opposite of one another, ready for the order to take action at any time.

The loss of Devin Antoinette—their military leader—has caused The Old Guard some instability. It has taken Carolyn Antoinette a few days to completely regain control, now as the leader of the faction. Marie Black remains a steadfast military adviser, and is now next in line to take control over the faction should Carolyn fall. Carolyn’s populist and charismatic views, however, have ensured that The Old Guard remains the most popular faction in Bunker Chicago.

The Coalition has been shipping in reinforcements and equipment from other bunker colonies—seemingly, everything that it can spare from its battlefronts with U-ARM. Jenive has returned as the face of The Coalition, but often appears more distant than usual for her. She now has a prosthetic, cybernetic leg, starting from the left knee, down.

U-ARM’s forces, having taken the brunt of the losses in the last mission, have been rebuilding and reorganizing. Their last leader was terminated from his position, and there are rumours that a war hero of near legendary stature has taken his place. They are in a rather sordid shape, and are attempting to reorganize sufficiently that they can stand a second chance of winning over the people of Bunker Chicago with promises of freedom. Their pamphlet campaigns have doubled in size, but don’t appear to be having a significant effect.

The Children of Eve, meanwhile, have been stepping up their efforts. Whispers in the minds of listeners have been reported all over Bunker Chicago, with several vanishing altogether from their homes, their families, and their jobs. Many listeners have been reporting to The Coalition and The Old Guard that they’ve had trouble sleeping at night. Their dreams are being perforated with images of men and women being drowned in salt water, with a sweet but sickly voice calling to them to join the others. It is clear that the Children of Eve have infiltrated the bunker at this point, and they are preparing to make their move.

Finally, Red Star is contemplating the shifts of power that they have seen. New equipment has been smuggled in from their faraway west coast colony, as they prepare to engage threats that are potentially beyond their scope. They also ponder upon their new alliances, and are simply biding their time: Waiting for the right moment to strike. Their existence is still largely unknown to the rest of the bunker, though there are whispers of a fifth faction operating in the shadows. They are a little closer to their goals, but not significantly so.

It is not known to the commoner what is going to happen next. There is, however, a great feeling of unease, that a page is about to be turned, a chapter, folded. That the time of silent politics and external threats was about to end, and a time of open warfare and internal conflict was about to start. That, soon, the grey pavement beneath their feet would be treated with a particular shade of red—for a few, sanguine. For a great many, their end. Some are even simply trying to avoid leaving their homes, save out of pure necessity, leaving the streets—especially in the more noticeably impoverished areas—clear of people in broad daylight.
