The advent and meteoric rise of virtual and augmented reality saw its rise in the 2070s when technological breakthroughs in the fields of energy creation wrestled free from the grip of poisonous and limited fossil fuels, major innovations in the collection and utilization of solar and tidal energies allow for never-before-seen advances in technology.

Old habits die hard, however, as new sources of power and the coveted technologies remain controlled by a select few corporations, conglomerates, and consortiums with power untold backed by almighty currency. Although the language may have changed, money never stopped talking.

The emptying-out of the “heartland” to make room for the massive solar panel fields and wind turbine farms to fuel an ever-growing demand for energy led to a drastic rise in population within major cities, urban environments swelling as the new energy sources required central distribution nodes. Small towns, being bypassed by the new distribution system and unable to exist on the old model, dried up over a period of decades, just more land for more energy to go to more major cities.

Cities like New Acadia. A new city built on the Eastern Seaboard as a site of several powerful distribution grids surrounded by urban sprawl, New Acadia was designed to be the paradigm of civilization in this, the “new age.” Major corporations control virtually everything and one doesn’t go far without feeling their influence. They are the manufacturers, the buyers, the processors, and the lifeblood of the city. Hundreds of thousands of employees live in a world dictated to them by their employers. They live in corporate-provided and controlled housing, corporations often controlling miles of territory at a time within the city.

As a result of the expansion of this private control of the economy and society itself, law enforcement and government control is a precarious situation. The New Acadia Police Department is stretched to its limits in attempts to keep the peace and enforce the basic laws in place on all of society, now known as “GenLaw.” This is held in stark contrast to the property rights, regulations, and stricter items imposed by the corporations on themselves and their resident-employees, known as “CorpLaw.” GenLaw, as handled by the NAPD, is the traditional route of the justice system, although the concept of a trial by jury has been long since abolished in favor of a more predictable three-judge panel for all legal matters.

The rise of AI, Artificial Intelligence, has radically affected the everyday lives of citizens within New Acadia. Private cars and public transportation alike are handled via advance computers. While AI has not developed to the level of androids or human-like personas, few homes of those of any economic comfort are without an voice-interfaced AI Assistance System.

Humanity is improving. While full-scale augmentation is only in the early experimental phases, advances in prosthetics have led to a revolution in the medical field while those able to afford it, often on the black market, have turned to prosthetic enhancements for recreational or...less than legitimate purposes. The loss of an eye or an arm, previously, would have been a severe, life-altering issue for a human. Now, the replacements are an improvement on the original hardware one was born with. If you can afford it.

With the power of corporations to influence the system and their outstripping of the NAPD in terms of funds and resources, GenLaw is difficult to enforce as the corporations handle a great deal of their issues, both internal and against one another, outside the boundaries of GenLaw. Corporate Security is more than just a badge and a flashlight in New Acadia.

For some, New Acadia is the realization, the culmination, of technology finally reaching the pinnacle at which it meets humanity's dreaming grasp. For others, it is simply a new reality delving into nightmares as so many things never truly change. The city itself is like the changing landscape of a dream, shaped by those strong enough to imagine their future.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Somnium Aeternum is designed to be a large-scale science-fiction setting in which storylines can operate independent or intertwine with easy, allowing for a large number of players to operate with relative independence without the need for a central over-arcing story and plot to which all characters and writers must adhere. Smaller episodic storylines are encouraged with the hopes that over time they can develop and flesh out more of the setting, eventually culminating in a “living” New Acadia that can continue to flourish.


Rules/Parameters
  • Character Sheets can be submitted to the OOC thread once it is created (And it will be linked here at that time)
  • While weapons technology, crime, and conflict are design elements of the RP, this is not a combat-centered or arms-race RP. These items are backdrop story elements to inspire and fuel character interaction and drama.
  • There is no central character or main plot in Somnium, but rather a large and expansive setting in which any number of characters and plots can run concurrent, either completely independent of one another or culminating in major story arcs of an episodic nature. It is meant to be a sci-fi tinted canvass on which everyone can bring their own ideas.

  • As a result, writers are welcome to create individual “episodes” in which a character may participate that may run concurrent to the same character being involved in posting in another “episode” at the same time. There is no need to lock oneself down if there are multiple ideas and stories to be written!

  • The technology level and atmosphere of this game is more akin to Bladerunner than Star Trek, but even less than the former. Flying cars and sky cities aren’t quite around yet and Replicants are beyond current AI technology.

  • The RP will delve into serious and mature territory at times. Handle it accordingly.

  • Collaboration is encouraged.

  • Multiple characters and supporting NPCs are encouraged.

  • Having fun and creating memorable encounters is the central focus.

  • As GM, I reserve the right to step in, make changes, both in character and through the invisible hand of power, to assist things in the right direction if it become necessary.

Erin stands at 5’7”, a slender but athletic build of one who has kept up with the physical training regimen required of NAPD personnel but never made it a personal mission or obsession. Her appearance is not that of a cop, often mistaken by many in her streets for a news reporter or some other profession better suited a pretty face than attempting the difficult, if not impossible, task of uphold GenLaw in New Acadia.


The most striking feature of the young woman is that of her left arm, or rather what has replaced her left arm. Just after her elbow, her entire forearm and hand has been replaced by a prosthetic. The design is sleek and obviously one paid for by a government contract, although not a flesh-toned attempt to recreate the look of the original appendage.

Biographical Information:
As a female cadet in the male-dominated hierarchy of the NAPD, Erin Valle had to learn quickly exactly what fueled her to choose this life. Subject to her fair share of discrimination based on the old-school mentality that she should be in a field requiring a skirt rather than a utility belt, Erin pushed herself to compete and overcome, eventually earning her badge. The early assignments were less than glorious, any time there was an administerial act to get her off the street, it seemed like she was shoehorned into the role.

Three years in, Erin and her partner responded to a tenement fire in which the private corporate emergency services chose not to respond on the grounds it would be most cost beneficial to allow the older building to burn and replace it with a new structure. This calculation include the loss of at least two dozen lives. Erin and her partner attempted to rescue a number of residents. They were able to save six, but at the cost her partner’s life and Erin being partially trapped beneath crumbling structure, resulting the in the amputation of her left arm just below the elbow.

It took more than a year for her to completely recover, including being fitted with a state-of-the-art prosthesis. From that point on, the discrimination and cat-calling from other NAPD personnel usually lasted until they saw her arm. She’d paid her dues.

Three years later, Valle transitioned into a Detective role, trading in her uniform for streets and going from tracking down purse-snatchers to the more serious crimes. Although often frustrated with the stonewalling from corporate interests at every turn, Valle’s dedication to her job has led to rise over time within the ranks -- often at the cost of her personal life.

Kes stands at an even 6 feet tall and weights between 180 and 190 lbs. depending on wether or not he remembers to eat. Not a fan of exercise, Kes benefits from a high metabolism and natural, wiry strength. He likes to keep things on the Natch, though he's no Luddite. No tattoos, no cybernetics, just good ole' fashioned caffeine and stims.

Background:
Kes is a technician that works for the Automated Municipal Transit system (AMT). He troubleshoots bugs and glitches that arise from firmware updates to the many vehicles that belong to the automated transit system. Because of his access and ability to manipulate the travel logs of these vehicles, he can use them for his own purposes without anyone knowing where they are or where they've been. Kes can smuggle just about anything, or anyone, in or out of New Acadia. He does so at substantial profit, and he convinces himself that it's his little rebellion against the corporate autocrats.

He's found himself in trouble lately, however, with the local criminal element who are beginning to notice their profits dip as Kes becomes more successful.

Cale is a tall, muscular man with broad shoulders, dirty blonde hair and blue eyes.

Biographical Information:
Cale is a helper, he is a trash man and on his spare time he is a vigilante, keeping the streets as clean as he can. But, there is one thing Cale is not, a follower. He was never too good at following commands, as proven by his discharge from the NAPD, for beating a murderer to death none the less. After his discharge, Cale took a steady job as an Operator at the local Trash Compactor site. During his spare time, however, he took to the streets as the masked vigilante known only as "Shade", serving justice to crooks and criminals in the darkness of the night. To Cale's fortune, Shade's true identity is still unknown.

Standing at 6'0" and 200lbs, Morgan has a strong, muscled build and a confident, purposeful stride that tends to unnerve people. He generally wears a long shirt, a long trenchcoat, pants and boots, generally in colors of various greys and browns.

Biographical Information: Morgan used to work as a high level private security guard for Genesis Technologies, a cybernetics manufacturer, when he was approached for a job by his boss. Twenty years salary in exchange for a discreet job. Kill this man, (whom he later found out was the head researcher from another cybernetics company,) and we'll make sure you get paid handsomely. Thinking he could use the money and retire, and live with his family for the rest of his days, he accepted.

He completed the job successfully, and even made sure to dispose of the body while still remaining unnoticed. He was paid an extra 50% for his tidy work, and told to expect another dial sometime soon. The NAPD, however, didn't let things go as easily. Funded by the rival cybernetics company and carried out by the NAPD, the investigation was not one to be trifled with. Seeking to clean up loose ends, Genesis Technologies set the gas line leading to his apartment to blow. His wife was killed in the explosion. He and his daughter were nearby out of the house at the time, and he was crippled, and his daughter was sent into coma from injury. Most of the bodies were never recovered.

After awaking, and presumed dead from the explosion, Morgan contacted some of his 'less than legal' paramilitary friends, and they helped him rebuild his body. An eye, his hearing, both arms, both legs, and several internal organs were replaced. While many of them could have recovered, they would have remained in a half crippled state permanently, and he had to replace them. A dead man now, Morgan decided that the only way to make solid money, enough to pay for his daughter's ongoing hospital treatment, and stay off the network, was to continue doing what got him into that mess. Being a hitman.

Additional Information: Morgan's cybernetics are marginally better than a human's regular limbs, having forgone more powerful cybernetics in favor of metal-less, nearly perfectly disguised ones. His eye allows for thermal and night vision, as well as several times zoom. His automatically adjust noise, meaning sounds never get damagingly loud, and he can often pick up subtle sounds in quiet environments, the like of which never found in cities. On the job, he generally wears normal clothes, or whatever suits the job, preferring to hide in plain sight and move through crowds rather than wear an outfit, but on the occasions when he knows he'll be seen, he'll often wear this. His alias "Aeon" is well known to the authorities, but they have no idea who he is. During his jobs, he prefers to minimize collateral, even as Aeon, but won't hesitate in a life or death situation.

Liam stands at 5'11" and is 170 lbs. His hair drops down and dangles right above his jawline, pushed to the sides as to not obstruct his vision. His physique is in line with his line of work, broad shoulders and enough pound for pound muscle to knock someone out in a single blow. Has some light facial hair that he shaves from time to time. When doing his usual work, he puts on his mask to make sure no one knows who did whatever it is he had just done. He is always seen wearing his uniform-like greatcoat unbuttoned with a simple shirt inside. It even comes with a nice little hood to go along with the mask.


Biographical Information: Liam used to be a part of the NAPD for a good 18 years. He was one of the better of the people in the department. Always risking his life to do what he believed was an act of justice. Taking crooks off the streets and making sure shit doesn't hit the fan one too many time every week. He loved his job and he treated his badge like it truly meant something. But the restrictions of corporate rules and their interests made him restless. Big corporations stopping him from doing his job simply because they want to do it their way. They didn't want to "compromise". Eventually he left the NAPD in pursuit of a more...open approach to what he calls justice. A way to do what's right without the walls setup by those in power. He's in power.

With his ideal in mind, He started his own little business. The Suez Helping Hands. This is where you should go to to report a problem. The more reliable and efficient option unfazed by law. "If you need help, we can lend a hand," was their motto. Anything and everything was their deal. There is absolutely nothing they won't do to help. In the span of a year, the small business grew. Liam had close to a hundred employees by then, People who shared his opinion and truly only want to do good.

Surprisingly enough, to this day, he's still the same organism he was when he was born. No prosthetic whatever. Still, however, he manages to perform like a machine, with a mind and skills like his. He isn't afraid to break rules, even if it is a big risk.

Additional Information:
His mask has its uses other than a disguise, such as a zoom capability, scanning and cyber vision (Which outlines and shows the structure of a building that exists in his database)
 
Kesser, Cale, and Liam are approved!

On Morgan -- His cybernetics are pushing the limit of what's available in New Acadia for anyone. You've got a good in-story reason for having it, so I'm more than happy with the offerings. I just want to make clear that what he's got is right at the edge. From a story perspective, that means he can't just go get a quick patch job to repair any damage and it's going to draw attention, some of it unwanted.

Let me know if you're okay with that or have any questions so I can give him a final approval.

Name:Dr. Arthur "Knife Ears" Bell

Arthur stands at about 5' 11'' and ways about 130 pounds. He's very lanky and doesn't look imposing at all. He's usually seen around wearing dark black jeans with dark brown ankle boots. He's usually always wearing a half tench coat underneath. What he wears under his coat depends on his workday that day. If he's working at his clinic he can always be seen wearing a cardigan, button up shirt, and tie. At other times he usually just wears an assortment of shirts and cardigans without the tie. It's safe to say he like to be somewhat fashionalbe despite living in the slums. Oh and he wears a pear of rimmed glasses to compensate for his right eye.

Biographical Information: Officially, Dr. Bell works as a Clinical Psychologist in the slums of New Acadia, however if you know a thing or two about the underground I can assure you he's sold what you know to 10 different people. When he's not bartering secrets with his more unsavory clients the fair doctor helps any and all with the traumas that urban hell has to offer, which include but are not limited to rape, daily loss of loved ones, child abuse, drug abuse, and so on and so far. Don't mistake that to be the work of a saint however. No, his labor is by no means altruistic. To him, he does to make himself feel better about what he refers to as the "lovely hell grad school got me into." And if you ever ask about the pointy prosthetic ears or mismatched eyes all you're going to get is a polite smile and remark about how Christmas is probably the worse day to have a heart. Turns out Arthur's life as it is only began 4 years ago, before that you could say he was living a pretty normal, cozy life as a university student. Whatever happened that changed him is an unknown story, however, what happened a few months afterwords is a well known tale in the criminal underworld.

The doctor, somehow, became the assistant of the then information broker "Maringold." Maringold was known to be a cold and calculating individual that valued secrets above human life. Because of this it surprised many when they heard he hired a personal assistant, and such a out of place one too. At the time Arthur seemed like a fish outta water, a pathetic individual in a sea full of sea monsters. Working for Maringold didn't stop many from physically and mentally abusing the doctor. He basically became the slum's personal punching bag. Everyone knew they could hurt the doctor, but they also knew killing him would probably incur the wrath of Mr. Maringold. Also it was a mystery as to what the doctor did for Marigold other than run simple grocery errands, nor did they think he would survive a full year under his employer. It didn't take long for that mindset to change however. In the first month after employment Arthur would make his first kill with a ganger who tried to knife him for fun. To commemorate his first kill people of the slums started calling him "knife ears". Within the first year of the doctor would have put about 40 people in a hospital and 12 in body bags, with that number doubling over within the next year. No one no how or where he learned to defend himself, but many started to fear or respect him. Within the third year of employment it became common sense that knife ears wasn't some pathetic assistant to fuck with anymore. It was at this time the Doctor was able to open up his own private clinic for the mentally ill, shocking many. It would take awhile for the people of the slums to come seek therapy from, but eventually they did, and through this a more likable image of Arthur was born. By present time Arthur would become both an established Information broker under Maringold's command and an entrusted doctor to the slums. It's still a mystery as to how he became this way, or what started it all, but most people don't think past his light-hearted grin. To his patients and the people of the slums, it's better to believe in what they see than wonder about what could get them killed.

Additional Information:
Arthur's Prosthetic ears only give him slightly better hearing than normal humans. His eye has a zoom function, better than average night vision(far from total night vision however), and a network interface overlay which can serve a number purposes from basic facial recognition to extended data analysis. I'm not totally sure how far I can push the technological capabilities of his eye but so far I think the that the things I listed are reasonable, if not please tell me!

Body

Aphrodite is above the average height of a normal woman but around the average weight. She is Caucasian with a rather pale skin tone. She has stark blue eyes and short platinum blonde hair.

Her face, while a bit rough after years of combat, is quite attractive. She possesses full lips of what can only be described as a sort of faded blue, a color which goes remarkably well with her pale skin. She also has an angular jawline but not to the extent of that which a man would have. If you fancy tough-looking women she is more than likely to have your head turning as she walks past.

Aphrodite is muscular and trains very hard to retain and improve that image. Being a "hired gun" of sorts it is more or less required of people like her to look as physically imposing as possible. That includes being fit, walking with determination and confidence in your steps and being an impenetrable wall of meat (and sometimes metal). Don't expect her to go down easily in a fist fight.

Clothing
Aphrodite dresses in a style she calls "street tactical", a fusion of combat-readiness and the tasteful fashion of today. This includes trenchcoats made of thick but comfortable material, tactical pants with many pockets and heavy combat boots; all of which come in greys, blacks and dark browns. If need be, mirror shades are acceptable accessories. The goal is to blend into the crowd but still look like a person who means business and Aphrodite is a woman who means business.



Biographical Information:

Aphrodite's mom had a thing for Greek mythology, so when it came to the birth of her daughter she was quick to name her after the Greek goddess of beauty, stating that Aphrodite was "the most beautiful thing" she'd ever laid her eyes on. To Aphrodite, all that name seemed to have done was make her a fleshy chunk of irony, having grown up in an ugly and vile world.

Aphrodite's dad walked out on her mom once she told him that she was pregnant. He couldn't deal with raising a child, especially since he had no job and was an anti-social punk. So Mrs. Jones had to work extra hard to make sure that Aphrodite grew up protected and safe.

Mrs. Jones belonged to a district in New Acadia that was known for its high crime rates. The people in this section of the city felt they were being shafted, that GenLaw and CorpLaw treated them unfairly - like they were less than human, and the only way to get back at the lawmakers was to turn to violence. However, Aphrodite managed to have some semblence of a childhood despite these conditions. She went to school, had friends and was able enjoy what little good things there were to be had in the district.

When she was eighteen she was appoached by a recruiter for the Army while walking with friends. The recruiter handed her a flyer and showed her holographic images of what the Army had to offer. Aphrodite was entralled by the prospect of going overseas and taking part in what the recruiter called "patriotic clashes" (he was maybe a bit too into the whole "fighting for your country" act, Aphrodite knew, but she didn't mind). She held on to the flyer after the recruiter had left and showed it to her friends. They wanted nothing to do with it and tried to convince the young woman that it was a dumb idea to join up, but she didn't care for their objections. At the end of the day she gave her mother the flyer, and after a short argument Mrs. Jones reluctantly agreed to let her daughter join the military.

From there Aphrodite signed up and was promptly shipped to a training camp where she was pushed to her limit in terms of physical activity. It wasn't long before Aphrodite was sent overseas with hundreds of other young soldiers to fight in engagements with whoever the government felt like bringing a hammer down on that day. Being in active combat brought out a lot in Aphrodite and she was transformed from a slightly tomboyish New Acadian girl to a tough-as-nails soldier. She even picked up smoking, which led to her earning the nickname "Smokes" from her squadmates.

However, there came a time when the government had very little use for the military, and they soon gave the order to bring the soldiers home. Aphrodite was a bit disappointed, having grown a fondness for combat, but she was thankful for having the tour that she did.

Once she was back in New Acadia she made a beeline for her childhood home. She came back to her old house finding it boarded up and looking as if it had been abandoned for quite sometime. People who knew Aphrodite (not really friends in this case) told her with heavy hearts that her mother had died during rioting which resulted in the break-in and eventual burning of the house. For the first time in fourteen years Aphrodite broke down and cried. Her mother, the person who taught her to be strong, was dead. Burned alive while Aphrodite was crawling through mud and blood in a country thousands of miles away. She felt lost for the very first time.

It didn't take long for her to get back on her feet, but she'll never forget her mother.

Aphrodite found herself lusting to be at the forefront of a battle again, to be an imposing figure again. She got herself a place and advertized herself as a mercenary to some of the less-desirable members of society. She also was recruited to be a protector or a bodyguard of sorts for those who could afford to pay. To her, it felt good to hold a gun again.

Additional Information:
  • Aphrodite isn't fond of augmented people. viewing them as "cheaters" who are too lazy to improve their physical body through excerise and hard work.
  • Aphrodite has a moral code, but she isn't afraid to work for those who aren't ... beneficial to society.
  • She is mainly hired by corporations who wish to gather soldiers to fight in so-called "shadow wars".
  • Touch her and she'll break your face.

Ajax is a small boy at 5ft 3in weighing only 96 pounds. Ajax has a very lengthy build, due to the amount of time he spends running from mad shop owners and the like. His red hair looks messy almost all the time and when Ajax spends time making it look good it will be messy again in no time at all. Ajax has dark greyish blue eyes.



Biographical Information:

Ajax has never had a real family, at the age of 5 his mother dead and after her death his father took to drink and was killed in a standoff over a gambling and drinking debt he owed. For four years after his father's death Ajax wint into a boarding home, but Ajax fell in with the wrong crowd and got kicked out of the home for braking the law repeatedly. Being thrown out onto the street woke Ajax up to the reality of life quickly. Ajax has spent the rest of his life begging for food and stealing to survive on the streets.

After spending time on the streets and meeting other young kids with no family or home Ajax strated a small gang. At the start the small group stole to survive in a world run by people older and wiser than themselves, but as the group became better at stealing and getting away with it they started selling their services. Real gangs and rich people would pay Ajax’s gang to do things only little people could do and get away with, like stealing, spying, and moving illegal goods. Ajax’s gang keeps growing every day and is home to many young homeless kids from around Acadia. Ajax’s called his group of thieves Runners since they spend a lot of time moving.
 
It is kind of like that, but they aren't stealing to give to anybody else just to make their own lives better.

Just a heads up -- we're getting close to enough of a player base to start things IC. I'm working with Tiko on the possibility of this becoming one of the site's featured Epic RPs. To do that involves a little bit of organization and set-up on my end that I haven't had a chance to finalize. I ask for a little bit of patience from everyone as the next two days are going to severely limit my online time.

Tegan’s long gold hair is typically pulled up and out of her way, whether she’s working or not. Her thin features and blue-green lead her to look deceptively misplaced in her environment. A lot of the time there are smudges of various greases and oils smeared on her face, neck, arms, and hands. She has a medium complexion and leans towards the thinner side. Tegan wears a work shirt over her normal clothes, dark colored pants, and comfortable shoes. On her hands are small slip-on gloves which allow her hands to stay steady while she works, made from her own blueprints. Other than these she has no other enhancements.

Biographical Information:
Tegan, more commonly referred to by her clients and co-workers as Mika, is a young woman who has a knack for working with machines. She is the oldest child, with 4 younger siblings, and both of her parents worked full time, usually leaving her with babysitting duty. While her family usually lived paycheck to paycheck, they tried to stay positive. After pushing herself through school, babysitting, and a part-time job, an 18-year-old Tegan began working at a mechanic’s shop at the bottom rung. Through hard work and persistence (and some natural talent to boot) she worked her way through the ranks and now acts as an independent contractor working out of that same mechanic’s shop. While she tries her best to obey the law, she also tends to root for the little guys. She will lend her skills out to any well-paying party.

Additional Information:
  • Tegan is a hard and focused worker, sometimes to a fault. It isn’t unusual for her to much on small amounts of junk food, or forgetting to eat altogether.
  • Tegan tells it like it is. She doesn’t believe in hiding things to protect people’s feelings. If they can’t handle it she doesn’t care to waste her time with them.
  • Tegan can work on anything from a watch to a vehicle. Of course, some things would take her longer to work on than others.
