Culture:

Easygoing and relaxed, the roots of the Iarin people are not well documented. They stem from what was once a warrior culture who developed technology and tactics in secret during their early formation in order to overthrow the government that had preceded them. The remnants of these ideals still show in their modern society, as their are no social classes and social mobility is available to all citizens. This freedom is defining among them, and is at the core of the values of each individual.

This mobility shows itself in their architecture as well, with many of their buildings on their collected worlds having an open-air construction, with individuals living in single-portion settings until they have become a member of a family. Family's are able to combine their allotted homespace into a conglomerated unit, allowing them more space.

In terms of religious customs, the Iarin have a sparse number of holy celebrations or events. They are well known to view eclipses as ill omens and dangerous days, and will seek to light the area as brightly as possible for the duration. They have only one holy season, Brit'ar, which correlates to the springtime of Iara Agar's orbit. This is the time when youth are most often bonded, and is thus revered as a spiritual time for every bonded soul of the Iarin people.

Despite their space-faring nature, the Iarin prize organic items above inorganic, as their usage of Syd has rendered the value of inorganic material to be extremely low. This, coupled with the fact that several Terran items, like silk, never developed on their worlds naturally, causes them to provided to the most decorated or available to the most socially important and wealthy individuals. While this makes utilitarian accommodations and furnishings very cheap, items made entirely of natural materials are significantly more expensive.

Species:

The Iarin people are hardy, even though they may not appear as such. Each fully matured member of the species is actually a symbiosis of two other beings. Introduced to one another at a young age, usually within the first year of life, the two beings combine into one and grow together. Though they resemble the Terran species in terms of body structure and appearance, they are slightly stronger when offworld due to their homeworld's gravity being 1.68 G, rather than 1.0.

The symbiotic being that bonds with the youth of the species, which when bonded resides within the physical body of the larger being for protection is understood to be a chemical powerhouse. In times of extreme duress, Iarin are capable of tapping into the symbiote's energy stores, allowing for the physical augmentation of muscles or nerves. While in this state, many Iarin are considered highly dangerous due to tests showing irrational behavior and a more instinctual set of reactions, rather than thought-based reactions. While research has shown that this more animalistic state is common among most Iarin, further study and discussion with the species itself has shown that there are those who, when accessing their symbiote, are fully cognizant and capable of all higher mental and physical functions. It is also well-known among those who deal with the Iarin frequently that these symbiotes also alter the nature of each individual as time persists, causing physical changes reflective of the occupation of the host organism(i.e. a metal worker developing a high tolerance for heat and dangerous gases in close proximity). This change is another note on why the Iarin, peaceful as they are, are considered dangerous, though the extent of the adaptive process a single Iarin can undergo is unknown.

In attempts for the species to cross-breed, no members born have survived the introduction of the symbiotic being for greater than a year. There is ongoing research into this, but no developments towards cross-species population have been made.

Naval Fleet:
Composed of several thousand vessels, the Iarin Collective Navy, or ICN, meets all the traditional naval standards in terms of vessel designation as well as ship ratios. They have four major classes of vessel, with sub-classes among each class. They are as follows:

giicSNY.jpg

Iova Class- The Iarin Frigate. They range from anywhere between 80 and 100 meters in length, and are the second most numerous vessel in the fleet. Used primarily as escort vehicles for dignitaries and trade ships, the Iova Class is nimble, if a bit shy on defenses. Equipped with a single main gun and several small point-defense laser systems, they are designed to operate within Iarin Space, and none are officially equipped with high-capacity super-luminal engines, limiting their operational range by a significant amount.

Lahhan Class- The Iarin Destroyer, this vessel ranges from the smallest at 100 meters to the largest at near 240 meters. They are the most common vessel manned by the ICN, and are the true workhorses of the navy. Capable of being outfitted for any number of different jobs, the Lahhan is distinct in form, though depending on the assigned job they vary wildly. Regardless of mission, the Lahhan is equipped with eight main gun batteries, two per side, two on the dorsal ridge, and two on the ventral ridge, all capable of 360 degree rotation and 180+ degree arc. In addition, the Lahhan features a network of shielding clusters, forming a protective barrier of energy that sits only a few meters beyond the exterior hull, but does not cover any gun emplacements. Designed to protect against incoming energy-based attacks, the shielding does have a maximum tolerance before it overloads and shuts itself down. Other, more tactical armament suites include missile salvo pods, each capable of being stored against the hull with no interference with the rest of the vessel's capabilities, or laser technology, transforming the vessel into a ship designed to crack through the shields of enemy vessels. En masse, there is little that can withstand the Lahhan, as it is nimble compared to the true capital ships of various fleets, but bearing enough brute strength to cause significant amounts of damage if left uncontested.

Ettarvin Class- The Iarin Dreadnought, ranging from 800 meters at the smallest, and 1200 meters at the longest. Built to be a machine purely of war, the Ettarvin Class warship is loaded from bow to stern with weapons batteries, both energy and kinetic, with an outer hull more than four times thicker than any other vessel in the ICN. Capable of holding it's own against other capital ships, an Ettarvin Class vessel wins combat by either out-gunning smaller enemies or out-maneuvering their larger opponents. In addition to their rather heavy armament, the class is equipped with a similar shielding technology to that of the Lahhan Class, with one major difference. Where the Lahhan Class vessel's shields have a maximum threshold they can withstand, the Ettarvin Class shielding is directly connected into an energy dumping system. This system is capable of cycling the excess energy from the shield through a system of specialized coils before ejecting it as a stream of energy from the ventral ridge of the ship. On several versions of the Ettarvin, this ejection point has been modified into a 360 degree rotational, 180+ degree arc weapon, capable of redirecting the excess energy as a powerful and maneuverable weapon.

Zekkovo Class- The largest vessels in the ICN at nearly 4000 meters apiece, the Zekkovo Class are the carriers, housing hundreds of thousands of drone-fighters to deal the business end of their capabilities. Unlike the other vessels in the ICN, the carriers are a support vessel, using their drone fleets to intercept incoming weapons fire against their nearby ships, rather than sending their drones out across the inky black to fight against capital vessels. While the drones are fully capable in combat against other vessels, they have only the barest of distance travel, thus keeping them effectively locked around the various Iarin Fleets. As the largest of the ICN vessels, the Zekkovo is a major target for enemies to pick at, and is thus equipped with extremely heavy shielding and armored plating. Where it adds in the extra defense, it loses out in weapons, however, only loaded out with ten kinetic weapons, pairs of which are located such that there are three firing points on board the port and starboard sides, two along the ventral axis with one forward and one aft, and two along the dorsal axis, mirroring those on the ventral side. There are also a very small number of these vessels that have been re-purposed for transportation and colonization efforts, rather than for war, and as such they are capable of moving enough individuals, goods, and technology to jump start the formation of a new colonial world.

Technology:

Transportation:

The forefront of known Iarin technology lies in the effecting and usage of quantum entanglement for trade and transportation services. This is carried out through an object known as the Vellan. Little is known about how it operates, its size, energy requirements, or what it even looks like. The capabilities that mark this as an advancement to be noted are that the Vellan is capable of transporting not just information instantaneously across infinite distance via entanglement, but also is capable of transporting large vessels. While only one commercial Iarin vessel, The Ellad'arra, is known to have one, all ICN vessels larger than the Iova Class are also equipped, allowing the military to move them about with near impunity to where they need to be. At the heart of the Vellan is something referred to as the Iyurro Drive.

The Iyurro Drive:
Manufactured by Iarin Fleet Dynamics and Reserach, the Iyurro Drive is a breakthrough in super-luminal travel for the Iarin Collective. Where most super-luminal drives pass beyond the speed of light by utilizing a warp drive or phase engine-engines that shift the universe rather than the vessel- the Iyurro affects the ship's nature itself.

By affecting the quantum state of the matter which is within the Iyurro's field of influence(something that has shown to vary based on energy input to the system), the drive is capable of restructuring the reality of things within that field. Utilizing both an initial charge of energy from the vessel bearing the Iyurro Drive as well as ambient energy from any and all nearby sources, this change, which causes physics to affect the matter in a way different from the initial state, allows the vessel using the drive to move not within a three-dimensional space, but rather in a space that resides in the first or second dimension. Due to the nature of this change, travel distances shift in such a manner that the vessel is able to cross gaps far faster than practically any other drive system, though anything that works via teleportaion remains in a class of movement superior still.

It has been postulated that, on a ship of the correct size and with enough energy input to the system, the Iyurro Drive would be able to pass that vessel through most barriers, as they exist in a way that the drive overcomes. While a smaller version of the current device was in the prototype stages of development, with promising results from the initial experiments, it was stolen from IFD&R by someone within the Iarin Collective with access to the lab. While there is a suspected culprit, he has been unreachable. One of the top admirals of the Iarin Fleet is in pursuit of him, if to at least verify whether he was involved or not.

Weaponry:

Iarin weaponry covers all the bases of convention, with both energy weapons and kinetic weapons being common in both vehicular and personnel versions. While there are dozens of iterations for each weapon, owing to the number of different missions that can be performed, there are no more than a handful of major styles.

Vehicle-deployable:
While the differences between ground vehicles and naval vessels is significant, weaponry between the two is simply a matter of size. Where the largest ground vehicle weapons are, at most, capable of leveling small areas of city structure, those used on starships are capable of reducing planets and similar bodies to either glassine perfection or chunks of slag-covered debris, depending on what is used in the bombardment.
Man-portable:
Drastically smaller than any of the vehicle variants, the man-portable weapons carried by the Iarin Military and, in a small percentage, trusted Iarin civilians are all designed with lethality in mind. For the purposes of their descriptions, this will be the primary description of the weapons, with annotations accordingly for their larger variants.
Firearms-

Hi'igranna- Comparable to a rifle, this weapon can be made in form to fire physical kinetic rounds, plasmatic blasts(as a directed beam), or High-energy Gamma or Low-energy Thermal laser bursts. Also called the HIG-2, it measures about 1 meter(3 meters Ground, 24 meters Space) in length and weighs just over 1 kilogram(60kg Ground, 84 metric tons Space) for the standard version, they are the bread and butter weapon of the Iarin Military due to their extreme versatility and hardiness. As a weapon of constant use, the HIG-2 has an active range of just over a kilometer for the kinetic variant, and nearing 400 meters for the directed energy variants(range increment of vehicle-based weapons not released and, usually, negligible due to sheer force of firing). Designed in both burst-fire and semi-automatic, the Hi'igranna has seen use in all theaters of Iarin conflict, and while the design is expected to continue to be used, the specifics of each model are constantly undergoing further development.

Mitstivvia- Referred to by the Iarin military as the Myehgvy, the Mitstivvia is the equivalent of a short-range shotgun. Weighing in at a hefty 4 kilograms, and with a barrel length of only 45 centimeters, the weapon is designed to utterly devastate anything within it's short range of 10 meters. Where the HIG-2 fires physical matter as projectiles, no matter the variant save for extreme prototypes, the Mitstivvia fires concentrated blasts of compressive energy. This blast, which dissipates rapidly over distance and amount of matter it passes through, physically draws matter in it's firing pattern towards the center of the expanding area, compressing and heating the matter incredibly quickly. Used primarily for breaching buildings and punching through heavy armor plating, wartime has shown the effects of these weapons on flesh with horrifying efficiency. Due to several undesirable effects when placed in tandem with a Vellan, as well as due to impracticality, the Mitstivvia was never designed in larger variants for vehicular use.

Filla'o- The Filla'o is a weapons system only outfitted on vehicles, both ground-based and stellar. It fires a salvo of missiles, ranging from two to several hundred per salvo, able to deliver devastation on a pinpoint scale. Each missile is 1.5 meters in length and just over .5 meters in diameter. Due to technological advancements, the warhead of the Filla'o is equivalent to 2 megatons of Trinitrotoluene(TNT), though there has been rumor of specialized versions with yields of no less than 300 megatons. In naval warfare, these missiles are loaded with gravitational direction control, creating miniature gravity wells at the sides of the aft end of the missile, allowing it to become extremely agile and absurdly useful in ship to ship combat, especially in dogfights.
Relations:

The Iarin Colective is a system designed around trade and mutual understanding, known by many smaller factions as being willing to compromise as much as possible to ensure that it manages to make good deals as often as possible. As such, they have no formal alliances, but treat and trade with all other nations who are not outright hostile to them.

As of recent events unfolding and being reported back to the Telphara, relations with several new civilizations have been established, though some are not as pleasant as others.

The Aschen Empire- Relations negative, with mild possibility of diplomatic recovery.
The Dominion- Relations positive, with ample room for growth
