History:

The Justice League was founded in the late 2000s by The Batman, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and The Martian Manhunter following an attack on the planet by the mad Kryptonian general known as Zod and his loyalists. Initially only interested in defeating Superman, Zod would best his foe and turn his sights on the rest of the planet.

His invasion drew the attention of many heroes and organizations, specifically the previously unknown Green Lantern Corps. The Corps sent their Green Lanterns to combat the Kryptonian threat in Metropolis led by Earth's Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

Finding themselves unprepared for the long thought dead Kryptonians, the Green Lanterns fled to regroup except for Hal Jordan. He faced down Zod's lieutenant Faora, engaging her in a long battle that saw Jordan defeated. Before the Kryptonian soldier could land her killing blow on the Lantern a flurry of yellow lightning surrounded the two.

Faora was left bloodied and beaten by an enemy she couldn't see. That enemy revealed himself to be the hero of Central City, The Flash. The two heroes partnered up with each other, setting out to find Superman as he was the only person on Earth that could match the power of the Kryptonian invaders.

Or so they thought. Months before an object had fallen to Earth, containing a strange alien being. The object was taken by Cadmus, but the alien being was long gone before anyone knew it was there. Keeping a low profile, the alien took the name of recently deceased Metropolis detective John Jones and decided to blend into human society by living his life.

The Kryptonian invasion forced him to reveal his true self to the world and engage in a battle with the attacking forces. Though untrained, the alien assuming the identity of John Jones proved to be more than a match for individual Kryptonians. Pragmatic warriors they were, the Kryptonians attacked their new enemy all at once.

Overwhelmed by the Kryptonians, the imposter John Jones accepted his fate. Death was near. The sun was setting on Metropolis.

That growing darkness only attracted the attention of a foe the Kryptonians would regret angering. The Batman, accompanied by the Wonder Woman, a warrior being thought to have been a myth shared by soldiers, came to Jones' rescue.

Using a combination of Wonder Women's strength and the Batman's wit, they were able to force the Kryptonians into a retreat. The three were still outnumbered by the dozen or so invaders, and their leader, Zod. They needed the Green Lanterns, but most of all they needed Superman.

The Kryptonian superhero was badly beaten, physically and emotionally, by Zod and left on the verge of giving up the fight on the outskirts of Metropolis. It was until he was found by The Flash and The Green Lantern that he jumped backed into the fray, finding inspiration in seeing so many people coming together to protect the Earth.

The three headed back into the city and met up with the other three heroes. As individuals they would never be able to keep the Kryptonian invaders down, but together they could easily outclass them.

The six heroes launched an assault on Zod's fortress of a ship hovering just above the city, each doing their part in scuttling the ship and creating panic. Explosions rocked the ship, but with the help of the Green Lanterns they were able to move the ship into orbit above the planet and capture any of the escaping Kryptonians.

With his army in Green Lantern custody, Zod began to have a mental breakdown and lashed out at Superman in the Earth's atmosphere. Knowing Zod would stop at nothing to destroy the Earth, Superman made a hard choice. To stop Zod he would probably have to kill him, something he never thought he would have to die as Metropolis' protector.

Fortunately, the hero found an alternative. He forced Zod down to the planet's surface to his hidden lair in the Antarctic, it was here that he locked Zod away in an unused section of the lair to live out the rest of his long life on his own.

The invasion was over, but it opened up the eyes of the heroes involved. They couldn't fight every threat on their own, they promised that when they needed help or when they thought another hero needed help they would answer the call.

It was at this moment that the Justice League was formed.

Over the years they would grow in membership until they were effectively a global, even intergalactic, superpower in their own right.

This has drawn the ire of Earth's governments.
