Is Democracy Actually Good?

In THEORY there are; and those first two words are amazingly dangerous little words. In theory there is no reason a dictator couldn't take all the power in a nation and run it benevolently without corruption. However, that's the problem with 'theory'. In practice 99% of the people whom even try for the job tend to be the sort of monster who couldn't be trusted to run a night shift at Denny's, let alone an entire nation. Even if you're one of the 1% who really couldn't be corrupted, well... Do you think your nation should allow abortion and, if so, how should it be handled? Don't answer (not in here) because that's not the point. The point is that there are so many different possible answers to that question. Some will say it's okay in the case of rape, others only in the first trimester, others say it's outright immoral, and so-forth; and they're all going to pine for your ear and, whatever choice you side with, there will be consequences and you will have to enforce it. Even a benevolent and uncorruptable leader will end up making some people mad.

With Communism it sounds wonderful on paper. A system where the common man is rewarded while the greedy capitalist is forced by a loving and benevolent government to give up their ill-gotten gains to fund little Timmy's operation. However it doesn't work in reality for a multitude of reasons from a lack of incentives and stifling innovation to governments simply not being the loving and caring father figure required for such a system. Yet people continue to flock to it because, IN THEORY, it works. I wouldn't even call it a theory TBH. It's more like political alchemy.

Likewise, having a leader picked by an educated elite sounds good IN THEORY, but in practice it's simply going to turn into an oligarchal circle-jerk. Plus, people simply don't act like the example says. For example, a lot of people will simply vote a party line no matter how good or bad the candidate is. Needless to say; this can cause a lot of problems and even the 'educated' would succumb to this. It happens all the time. However, on the converse, a lot of people DO put in the time and effort to research the candidates and pick according to which candidate represents their interests and provides the best solutions to their problems according to their beliefs are.
