Appearance: Maria is a human barbarian that hails from the world of Valore, born within the northern lands of G'ael. She is an imposing and dominating figure with thick red locks of hair and amber eyes. Her striking features could once have been deemed alluring; however, her looks have grown marred by the feral state that grips her, and the ragged scar that runs down the length of her neck from ear to sternum. Both hair and clothing are frequently wild and unkempt. The few that have seen her in recent years say that she is cursed, a creature as wild and dangerous as the beasts that roam the wilderness.

Afflicted with lycanthropy, Maria's war with her affliction has left her hold over her humanity frayed and weakened. Even within her human state, the lycanthropy affliction seems to have taken root in her mannerisms and increasing instability. As is customary of her kind, Maria is strongly bound to the lunar cycles and forced into her werewolf state upon the night of the full moon; however, having been so overtaken by her affliction, Maria is also capable of releasing the beast within her during times of intense duress.

Skills:
Maria is a skilled warrior and specializes in two-handed swords. She has had many years to hone her martial prowess and her ferocity in battle is a raw and unbridled force to be reckoned with. She is a skilled tracker and survivalist. Maria can draw on her Ulfhednar blood to enhance her physical body and senses well beyond that of a human. She can also regenerate most superficial wounds within minutes. More severe wounds may take hours or days to fully recover. Her regenerative capabilities are further enhanced in her werebeast form.

Personality Traits: Maria has fallen to a nomadic and reclusive lifestyle, but not entirely by choice. She remembers the bonds of blood and honor, and of friendships forged in the heat of battle. The ever present war to maintain her humanity against her affliction has driven her from civilization. She is not one for idle conversation and prefers the company of her own thoughts to the company of others. Maria's grasp on humanity is rooted in her connection to others, and in her self-constructed isolation she often loses herself in memories of the past.

Backstory: Maria was born to a tribal clan renowned for their ferocity in battle. For centuries they honed their martial prowess in a relentless war against primordial evils that sought to swallow up their lands. The strongest among them further augmented their combat abilities through the ancient practice of inflicting themselves with lycanthropy. These warriors, known as Ulfhednar, drew upon the strength of their werewolf blood to enhance their ferocity and prowess in battle. There was no greater honor than to take on the mantle of the Ulfhednar, but the price for this strength was high. Their affliction gradually eroded their humanity and drove them to madness and in time they became feral and uncontrollable. Those that succumbed to their affliction were exiled out into the desolate landscape that lay beyond their borders. Here they served as a natural barrier to encroaching forces until they inevitably fell in battle.

Maria was an Ulfednar of great renown, bearing her affliction through countless battles. She could ride the line between human and wolf closer and longer than most. Many among her clan believed her to have conquered her affliction. But she too fell to the effects of madness in time and was exiled to the wilds. Alone and grappling with her dual nature, Maria grew more and more savage. Days turned into months, months into years, but she did not fall in battle like so many of her kin. Even in madness she clung to the shreds of her humanity.

Desperate to find new purpose and to carve her own path, Maria took to wandering and in time took up the life of a mercenary. In her travels she encountered individuals from various walks of life, and unexpected alliances and friendships were born. The bonds she forged became anchors to her humanity and she turned her affliction against those of dark intent. For decades she stood upon the precipice between humanity and savagery, and her spirit remained unbroken.

As the years bore on, Maria discovered that her affliction had greatly lengthened her lifespan. Due to the volatile battle lust of the Ulfhednar, few survived long enough to discover their longevity. This longevity eroded the chains that anchored Maria. With the passing of years companions and comrades fell to battle, sickness, and age and Maria was set adrift once more.

It was during these years of wandering that Maria's world fell to ruin. The cataclysm they called it. A collision of destructive forces so powerful that the shock waves tore through the very fabric of reality. Spacial rifts opened her world to the multitudes of worlds beyond. It was through one of these rifts that Maria found herself at Wayfarer's Point. The ability to traverse limitless worlds with ease called to Maria's nomadic nature, but one rift in particular drew her in with a vision from her past.

Goals: Discover why she was drawn to Vitka.

Allies: Rynhart, Guildmaster of the Wayfarer's Guild. Rhea, Guildmaster of the Elysian Vanguard. Both Rynhart and Rhea have proven unsuccessful in efforts to recruit Maria into their respective guilds. Taima.

Enemies: Maria's list of old enemies has grown as small as her list of old comrades, and perhaps the time has come to make new ones.

Current Status: No current status.
Latest Deeds: No recent deeds.
Guild Contributions: None.
Guildmaster's Notes: Maria presented from unknown origins, seemingly arriving from one of the many rifts across Vitka. Her savagery in surviving her arrival into hostile lands could prove a valuable asset - or a dangerous enemy. More information about this foreigner is needed. Until then, a close eye is best kept on her until her intentions become clearer.

Maria stood from where she had knelt to examine the tracks in the snow and brushed the white powder from her hands and knees.
'I heard you died,' Maria remarked.
'And they say you lost your mind,' Taima replied.
Maria grunted. 'I think I got the better deal.'
Taima might have smiled had such an expression been possible with her draconic visage. 'We shall see,' she replied. 'Your spirit remains strong. You have bore your affliction for longer than most.'
Maria snorted. 'I suppose that's your doing. Set Rynhart on me did you?' she asked.
Taima chuckled lightly. 'It is not my place to dictate the actions of mortals. That part of my life ended with my death.'
Maria frowned and looked to the tracks her quarry had left. 'The trail will grow cold if I delay,' she told Taima.
Taima shook her head. 'You are on the wrong trail, Maria,' she answered. 'But that is not why we are here.'
'Of course not,' Maria grunted. 'People don't show back up after a few centuries unless they want something.'
Taima offered no response and instead gestured behind Maria towards a shrine that stood at the outskirts of Nexus city. Maria looked to it only briefly but when she turned back Taima was gone.
With a frown upon her lips she approached the cracked and crumbling stone wall that enclosed the structure. Assessing the height, she quickly cleared it to land in a crouch upon the other side. The stench of the place reeked of decay she noted with distaste as she stood and approached the building carefully.

She had made it only as far as the entrance before she had awoken. She might have passed it off as a dream, but why dream of Taima now after all these years. Regardless, she would know soon enough the nature of the dream once she reached her destination.
