Chronicles of The Omniverse Archived The Core Systems: Ostra - Wielden Colony

Stone nodded along with Kyo, humming when he finished. “If I had a soldier for every time I had said the same thing...I’d have the strongest army in our galaxy.” He gave his knuckles a brief crack before continuing. Of course, some are meant to lead and others are meant to stand back and watch. Who will the role of leader fall too once you’ve left?” He asked, having half a mind to tell his other impromptue house guests to leave. He’s caused enough damage as it was to his office...

Kyo shrugged. “Perhaps one of my guild members, maybe I’ll dishand it altogether.” He told the man calmly. “What’s important is I don’t want to do ‘this’ much longer. It’s not good for my mental health.” Kyo looked up at one of the wI does. “What made you do this job?” He asked curiously.

Stone gave a small laugh, shaking his head. “Decide isn’t the proper word. Assigned is more accurate. Back on Aer, I enlisted, hoping to get a job on a battleship or defending some helpless frontier. I worked a little too hard, you could say. They assigned me to a frontier, alright...but, upon arriving, I was greeted with a quaint people, slow to anger with little natural predators. This place used to be a simple shack with a bed. When I entered the first time, I had a note waiting on my pillow from one of my commanding officers. It read, “Excellent job on the promotion. The Higher-Ups saw your score and didn’t heasitate to assign you here - safest spot in the galaxy.’ Needless to say, I was beyond disappointed...” he said, stroking his hands and staring out. “Of course, I came to love this place after a while. The people are kind enough...the seasons are fair...the crops are hardy...I have no reason to complain. Still, I can’t help but wonder what life would’ve been like as a war hardened general on some nigh inhospitable planet, fighting day in and day out...” he continued, rambling.

Kyo was momentarily silent. "...so were you in it for the challenge, for duty, or for glory?" He asked calmly, turning to Stone with a somewhat inquisitive look. It was an amusingly tragic story for the man - he had everything he didn't want, exactly what most other military men sought, and the last thing he needed. It nearly made Kyo laugh, and some time ago it probably would have. These days, though, it seemed nothing could make him laugh.

"I'm curious though - if you intend to join us on this expedition - what will you tell your higher ups?" He asked, leaning forwards on the table to rest his arms on it to help prop himself up - he was already getting comfy around the giant man.

"Mana storage was removed for weight purposes as my Master is the source of mana capable of powering the entire ship." Titania explained and looked at the vessel, hoping he He didnt adjust anything pertaining the navigation. Titania then looked towards Annie. "Would you like to know why the ship is designed vertically?" She took a short pause before just saying it anyways. "It was built for speed and maneuverability. any and all unnecessary extras were simply removed to reduce mass. if Hinata gave me the whole shabang...im afraid i would have to tear it all out again."

“Honestly? I couldn’t tell you. I was young and foolish. I guess I was missing something and I thought I could get it by becoming some war hero. It could’ve been a number of things, really...” he eased back into his chair, rubbing one of his temples.

“I don’t intend to tell them a thing. They’ve been less and less responsive over the years and I doubt they even bother to read my reports and requests. Even if I were to die on this expedition, one of my men would take my place and no one would ever care. Realistically, I could’ve left a long time ago...why I’ve waited till now is beyond me.” He finished, taking a moment to ponder the question himself.

From down the hall, a bell rung, the sound of a clattering cart making its way up the hall slowly rumbling closer. A green blob of a Sli’f emerged, pushing along a cart with a variety of trays on it. “Twelve, friend, go ahead and get the drinks, I’ll worry about the food. The blob gave what could’ve been described as a nod before shambling off. Stone stood from his seat, taking one of the largest trays and setting it down before Kyo and himself, lifting its top to reveal an array of vegetables, steaming within the roasted carcass of an Aerian bore. “Master Kimura, your dinner.” Stone smirked, giving a mock bow.

@Raffia:
Hinata nodded calmly. "That explains it, I at first thought it may have been powered externally, but a Hyadn Dynamo makes more sense." He said sagely, though with his voice and size he just sounded like a child trying to be serious. I didn't give you the whole deal though, just the parts I thought you'd like~" He told the two girls happily. "Go on in, I swapped the gravity so you'll be oriented properly if you go inside." He told them, gesturing to help Mizumi and Titania inside the ship.

Kyo hummed softly. "So fame and glory." He chuckled quietly. " He listened to the latter part of Stone's story with well-feigned interest, and when the giant man mentioned simply up-and-leaving without warning, it made him genuinely laugh. "You said you were foolish before - if the military wanted you could end up a failed Hyadn." The young androgynous adult warned calmly. Such was a legitimate worry - failing to become a Hyadn was known to cause rather horrendous physical and psychological conditions.

The sound of the bell caused Asmodeus' ears to twitch, though the familiar remained uncharacteristically silent, simply puffing away on his pipe. Kyo turned to the sound and immediately spotted the verdant Sli'f. Though he'd only eaten breakfast today Kyo didn't really feel hungry - but he could probably manage a decent portion of dinner if it was good. The promise of drinks was probably the most exciting part about tonight to the Kimura. As Stone theatrically and rather mockingly presented the food, the young man revealed his teeth with upturned lips. "Delightful, your service is just delightful~"

Stone gave Kyo a look that said more than it needed to. He may not have felt human in his own skin but he would feel that look Stone gave him. He gave him a small smile and said, “I’ve lived a long life. It wouldn’t be the worst way to go.”

Stone notes that Kyo’s smile was slightly forced. He had the lips down. He needed the eyes to make it believable. “Twelve is a chef beyond measure. He always prepares the best.” Stone finished setting the other trays - potatoes with gravy, several small cooked birds, and a hardy broth, all very rustic with a sense of elegance - a pauper-Kings meal as many would call it. Afterwards, Stone took his own seat just as Twelve retired with a large, unopened purple bottle.

Out on the dock, a small, four man ship came into port, a young mage pacing the deck as they dropped line. “Damn, Damn, Damn...Langtra will be so mad at me...I’m way behind schedule...I still need to do a field head count...I haven’t fordeified défenses with any spells...” He continued to list off his “failures”, pacing on and beyond as he reached for the pipe in his pocket. Before he could bring it to his lips, however, a massive white owl came down and snatched it from his hands, flying off with it. “For fucks sake, Trent!” He cursed, livid at the bird. First Langtra, now his own familiar? It’s like nobody wants him to smoke...

Titania could only chuckle at Hinatas attempt at sounding sagely as she followed him towards the ship with Mizumi on her back once more. Upon reaching the vessel she touched it with her hand and closed her eyes.the moment her hand made contact with the ship surface something almost like an energy field flashed across the entire vessel before an airlock opened up on its own. Stepping inside the ship she felt the sudden tug to her right side as the ships gravity generator did its thing and began pulling her towards the floor. just before she fell to her side she managed to grab onto a pipe and keep herself upright. for Hinata and Annie with would appear as if Titaina was walking on a wall.

@Snek:
The look Stone gave Kyo caused his heart to skip a beat, and it spoke louder than Stone could verbally. Thankfully the young Kimura was already an expert at concealing his own body language, so much so that even his cool eyes never betrayed him. "You'll believe that even more once you see the creatures that emerged through the breach." Kyo sagely announced. "Before I do show you, though. The dinner looks delicious." It was the exact kind of food he enjoyed and respected - nothing too fancy, but clearly with care put into it.

In such of that case, he gently clapped his hands together in delight, turning to Twelve as they returned. "Thank you, Twelve. You've done a delightful service." He said, legitimately happy with the cook.

Hinata followed Titania as a sort of guide throughout the revamped interior of the ship. His action was a fair bit more graceful, as he simply jumped and reoriented, his heavy, oversized metal boots clanking when they hit the ship's floor. Annie followed, even more graceful as she bounced straight onto the floor of the ship in almost complete silence, if not for her humming a soft tune to herself. "Alright, I gathered that your aim was to reduce mass, so I've only increased the total weight by about three kilograms - but don't worry I only streamlined it and took out the unnecessary plating that wouldn't protect you. The cockpit has at least a full foot of protection from any exterior angle, and I've restructured the workings between the whole thing so it'll glance most physical projectiles away from the cockpit as well." The feminine magitech explained, quite clearly proud of himself, both his normal hands and his oversized mechanical units on his hips.

"Sometimes, Hinata, I wonder if you're capable of NOT being a show-off." Hinata giggled cutely. "Naw, I was practicing some prototype enchantments out~" He told his friend happily. "Oh and I made a small modification to the ship, it will now be able to orient itself in any direction under any atmospheric scale below 1.3g." He added.

"Three kilogram increase is negligible i was worried it was a couple tonnes." Titania replied as she kept on listening to all the modifications Hinata had done to the ship or more specifically her as the ship is part of Titania still. "A full foot of protection? thats quite impressive." the armoring increase sure was leaps and bounds improved from the mere inch and a half to an entire foot. She did however wonder what material he used or what he had to pull out to keep the ships weight down.

"!.3g?!?" Titania called out surprised. she had always had massive problems in atmospheric engagements as this ship could keep itself only at an 45 degree angle in 0.4g environment before falling out of the sky like a rock. "That's one hell of an improvement over what i could do in atmosphere." eventually taking an elevator down to the armory which was looted empty apparently by the recovery squad she looked over to a specific spot. she didn't care about the ancient guns being gone they were quite useless anyways.

Touching a wall panel the thing made a similar glow of energy as the ship did before. Opening up on its own it revealed a much smaller room in a still pristine condition that Titania was quite sure even Hinata didn't know about.inside the room there were several ancient suits some looked broken or damaged beyond repair. one with the appearance of a snake and a human hybrid scarred by marks of intense battle seemed the one still mostly in tact. "This is what i was mentioning to you Annie. pinnacle of human engineering. modular Slif enviro suits and combat modules. as far as i'm aware they haven't made any new ones for almost 800 years as their production was discontinued while i was still in service. they were a bit too pricey for the military to afford as each one had to be personalized and modularity was introduced too late down the line." Titania gave a quick explanation of what the things in that room were all about.

@Generik
Cass' heard the banging but she was frozen in place. Finally, she shouted as loud as she possibly could,"STOP! THERE'S A SLI'F IN HERE!" She looked from left to right and noticed that the ship was starting to be cut apart. She began to move slowly and transform into her human-like form. She knew it was faster, but she also knew that the electrics hurt her. A scrapyard would definitely have some old electronics, the young Sli'f would have to be careful. However, before that, Cass' needed to find her way out.

@Generik
Stone nodded his thanks towards the chef, taking the bottle from him. “Again, thank you, Twelve. You really know how to tie a meal together.” The Sli’f gave a parting wave before slipping back down the hall. This left the two alone again, Stone passively pouring then tankards of the substance in the bottle. Upon further inspection, the liquid was ale, not wine. It was an off yellow color, a bitter, sour flash before being met with a spice flash and a smooth swallow. After several drinks, Stone had a slight flush to his face. “Kyo...if I may ask, what is your opinion about my little colony here...?”

@Raffia Kiryuin
"Well, there was a lot that you didn't really need in there, like solid plate metal as armor, some pipelines, and a surprising amount of very old weapons that I cleared away. You know, you could make a lot of money off them too - they're very old." Hinata blushed a little once he'd finished his run-down of the modifications. "I also had some pretty good mass-killer enchantments that I picked up a few weeks ago." Annie pressed herself against Hinata and made a kissing noise which made him shriek and throw himself against the other end of the ship hall to recoil from her, causing Annie to laugh hysterically. "As you can see," She managed between laughs, "the interior's pretty tough too!" Though the small mechanic with the huge mechanical frame dented the wall, as he recovered and pulled off it, the wall soon bent itself back into shape. "Y-yea, the enchantments were sort of outdated, but I managed to get some better ones in for you too. I simulated it and anything more than 1.3g and she'll start to have-" Annie cut Hinata off with a small bit of flesh covering his mouth. "Hush now Hinata." She ordinarily wouldn't hush someone like that but she was very very interested in what lay behind that hidden panel.

As Titania explained the suits and their functions and their history, Hinata's eyes widened. He'd never had the time or money to visit a museum to see these in anything outside of pictures, and they looked incredible.. Annie bounded over to the suits and looked them over. "And I can have 'em??" She asked. The idea of covering her weaknesses made her feel tingly.

"Just stay right where you are hun, we'll get you out safe!" Already, outside the larger portion of the ship, several people were beginning to work on cutting the hull open to get at where Cass was, using scanning magic to get a layout of her surroundings to avoid cutting something that would cause anything to fall or electrocute her. "Just stay very still sweetie!" The woman's voice called. Why there was a large-form Sli'f inside the ship when the scrapyard was only for workers, was beyond those outside - but more important was to get the in-danger girl out of there.

Kyo paused from his activity of plating his meal to answer Stone, sitting back to think on it for a moment. "Honestly? There's nothing wrong with it, any more so than any other town I've been to. Only thing is, aside from being in Ostra, it's just kind of.." He had several words for how he'd describe the place, but at best they were mildly insulting and at worse he'd just seem rude. He knew though that Stone would have already agreed with what he had to say, or else he wouldn't have asked. Nobody asks that kind of question if they want a complimentary answer. "It's bland."

Titania nodded. "All yours Annie. to me they're practically worthless...dead weight. i haven't had any Slif crew for centuries and these are to thank you for both getting my avatar body recovered and getting me fixed up." Titania then looked over to Hinata and couldn't help but chuckle a little bit.

"New enchantments you say? I'm going to have to give them a thorough field test one day. but for now.... think you can get one of these ancient clankers up and running?" She asked Hinata while gesturing towards the Evniro suits or how some of her crew members dubbed them the iron men. All Titania had to do is touch one to reactivate its spells and programmed subroutines went through several checks only to bring up multiple mechanical faults and eventually simply gave Titania a red alert before shutting down. "They're all fine on the magic side just a lil kick is all they need mechanically...needs a bit of work." Couldn't really expect much from stuff older than 800 years. its surprising they were still in this good of a condition considering what they had been through.

@Generik
Stone held back a snort, nodding. He understood completely. Personally, he would’ve used stronger words. But bland more than fit the bill. “All the more reason to leave this place.” He said to himself more than anything. Maybe it was the ale in him but going awol was looking more appealing by the hour. “And you said you’re leaving in some sixty hours, yes?” He asked, leaning back in his chair. Yes, he’s already asked, but he was starting to get anxious.

Annie quivered with barely bridled excitement, the only thing that kept her from leaping inside one to test it out was the knowledge that they weren't in good enough order to be viable to operate. However, Hinata had a different opinion on them. "Hey Annie, can you please hop in one for me?" Annie visibly shifted to focus on him, leaning away to appraise him better, before suddenly changing to form what looked like a spear, then slung herself straight into perfectly clear glass, squeaking when she realized. Hinata giggled as she opened the window and hopped on inside of the closest suit, and audible hissing and squelching could be heard as she squeezed the air out of it to fit inside better. "Wow, I almost perfectly fill this thing!" She said happily, making the suit wiggle slightly as she nestled herself in. She looked kind of odd in the suit, shaped kind of like a Coeti but smaller. "Try to move around." Hinata suggested, and when Annie did so the dark-skinned mechanic hummed, spotting all of the parts that needed maintenance. "Good news, they weren't damaged too badly when your ship crashed. Bad news, their mobility is severely limited." He explained calmly.

@SnekySnoo
Asmodeus started laughing. "You sound like Kyo when he was about to leave the house." He announced, his gigantic ears bouncing as he came down from his outburst of amusement. He calmed down after a few seconds, and went right back to silently smoking as Kyo scratched him behind one ear. "Yes, in about a day and a half I'm gathering anyone who was interested; we're going to do some try-outs, then we're heaeding out with anyone still happy and able to come with us on the expedition. My only hope is to get a couple Hyadn. You're one too, right?" He asked, his keen blue eyes focusing on Stone.

“Myself? No. I’m not very good at any forms of magic. However, I do know of two Haydn...but you’ll more than likely have to buy their services..." Stone mused, thinking on the two. "They're...tax collectors of sorts. Although, it'd probably be better to refer to them as hired thugs.." He took another sip of his ale, humming lowly to himself. "Still, if you need able bodied people, they'd be the ones you want. If I'm not mistaken, they should be here tomorrow in full force to collect." Stone stated, sounding almost annoyed.

Kyo had a few educated ideas as to what Stone meant by calling the two Hyadn tax collectors, especially when he clarified that they were more like thugs. They were bullies who used their overwhelming advantage over non-hyadn to get owed money back to others. As much as he'd like an extra pair of Hyadn he was somewhat skeptical. His first thought was to have Stone hire them, but it would cause less problems down the line if Kyo did it himself, and thus he nodded. "Then if it's okay with you, since I'm staying the night anyway, I shall meet them myself when they arrive." He announced.

“That isn’t out of the question...but, if at all possible, I’d like your interaction with them to be...limited. They’re scoundrels that dress like king...and speak like sirens with bites like wolves....” Stone said, his face brooding as he pushed around food like a child. This talk of hooligans had made his appetite vanish. “One in particular, you have to keep your eye one. He’s shifty...and he can snatch your shoes while you’re walking. You’d have to walk a mile before you noticed they were gone.” Stone said, almost in remembrance over a similar event.
