AI Art Generation: Beneficial or Problematic?

I went looking to see if a thread on this topic already existed. Please direct me appropriately if so.

AI Art Generation: Beneficial or Problematic?​

Everyone and their mama has heard about AI art generators and the various arguments and opinions folks have about them by now. Stable Diffusion, Dream, Craiyon, even applications like Lensa that use AI to augment existing images and countless others are arriving by the day. They've quickly become a mainstay in almost every artistic community I'm apart of or adjacent to. I've heard people argue both in favor and against their use, especially when it comes to collecting a profit off what people generate, and now I want to hear it from ya'll.

Which side of the spectrum do you fall? Is AI a legitimate tool for people to use in artistic "creation", or do you feel more strongly about how it borrows from the artists these various engines "sample"? Do you think it's ethical for people to make money using these programs? Do you feel similar about AI text generators? Would you play a game, read a book, or consume other media that was made entirely from AI? Do you feel that artists should disclose whether or not AI was used in their works?

So, just to check if I understood you correctly @ArachneShade (and with the emphasis on your quote mine to help illustrate what led me to my thinking)

Your example; that you used it to sell customized AI generated pornography to those willing to pay for it but unable to make it themselves (although your opinion of your target demographic does not color your opinion, you clarify) and the higher than one would expect earnings from this—increasingly concerning the more the imagination is applied—venture is a supporting position for the beneficial use of AI Art Generation technologies?

And to clarify, it wasn't corn, trust me I have at least the rest of human decency inside me. I don't think it's supporting. Other people can use AI differently. My statement was mostly to make people laugh. Maybe I haven't hit your type of humor.

You're not in trouble. But I'd be a poor admin if I left what could be misinterpreted as someone bragging about making potentially illegal (and morally repugnant) imagery for sale to criminals just...stand unquestioned. There's my type of humor (which isn't even remotely offended here), and then there's my responsibilities in meeting my promises for the kind of space that has been founded here.

Being edgy is fine. IRC and image boards even before 4Chan raised me. Being edgy as a means to make another uncomfortable however, would not fly.

Appreciate you guys offering opinions, but neither of you really addressed any of the talking points proposed in the OP. Saying you like it and use it doesn't really explain WHY or add to the discussion on WHY you feel that way / choose to do so.

Some of my best character pictures are made by AI. After a few dozen attempts usually, but eventually it gets close enough for me to like the result. Of course some GIMP attention by me afterwards doesn't hurt to smooth out the rough edges. All in all, I think AI art is fine, and far from perfect, leaving a lot for the would-be artist to fix/edit themselves. It's a good template to work off of.

I don't mind it. The biggest complaints I encounter are from artists. Understandable as it affects their livelihoods. Lying about not using it--that's not cool.
