Ame Damnee Outskirts of New Eden

Kian

Humanity's Stargazer
The outskirts of New Eden are vast and lightly developed with dirt and gravel roads that branch off from the primary stone brick road that leads into the great unknown, Oblitus. The great gate into the city is heavily guarded by Wardens and militia members and are constantly examining what passes through in order to preserve the order as well as prevent smuggling. Farmsteads and wagons dot the lands of grain, fruit, and other produce with small rows of travel available between the farms. Despite the remote locations of the homes of the farmers, they remain fairly impressive with large houses that utilize the large amounts of space. Militia and police enforcement is extremely light and thin in these areas, leaving the farmers and ranchers to defend themselves with little weapon restrictions. As a result, this surrounding field remains one of the few locations in New Eden territory to harbor crime and criminals themselves.

Theme

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”---Theodore Roosevelt
The frigid wind howled its sweet song of sorrow, and while the sun rose up over the horizon, no warmth was to be found in its embrace. As the land begun to bathe in its light, the land stood ever barren, the trees desolate with not a hint of green to be found. An almost ominous veil had cast itself over New Eden, a shadow that stretched across all four corners. A sense of anguish had befallen the denizens of the grand city, but even in their defeat, they would still cling to hope of what tomorrow could bring. The pearly gates jaws seemed almost unforgiving as they carted the bodies of men and women who now stood heroes from the harsh lands of Oblitus, carrying them home with their heads hung low. Solemn expressions and tearful eyes seemed to follow in their wake. But it wasn’t the memories of the dead that haunted them, instead, it was the grave loss they had endured. Just as the church bells echoed through the streets, a man standing on the walls overlooking the city looked to the sky only to find despair.

There was no questioning that the fate of the city now fell on one man’s shoulders with the death of a Grandmaster looming in the air. Not a snippet of a whisper would be uttered as everyone’s breath seemed to almost still, an eerie silence following the news of the carnage. Respects were paid as those standing on the streets removed their caps; their gazes were drawn to the ground as the children’s looked up, hearts heavy with grief. Arms crossed, the Grandmaster, Raakshdos, looked on, a single tear painting his cheek. In that moment, a new era had been born, one which would be guided under his steady hand. One watch had ended, and another had just begun.

Ryuna, Streets the District of Elysian

The cool wind cut through the soft black kimono catching the long sleeves and the edges of the layered silk. Long black hair was bound up in a very simple bun held by a comb with a veil attached to it. The veil fell between a pair of tall white fox ears to hide the beautiful face of the kitsune woman. Nine long fluffy white tails curled and writhed behind her slender form.

Her teeth gritted as she watched the caravan of the wounded. She wanted to destroy all that had dared to harm what she considered hers. Her master’s friends and those he guarded fell within this claim. Her golden eyes glared behind the fall of her veil. While the human custom of mourning for the dead never made sense to her she understood it was vital for them. The soft crying of those that lived made her soften slightly as she walked around in the shadows among those that should rightly fear her. Scorn her even. But they knew she wasn’t of any harm to them.

She found herself wandering past the open door of the tavern. The soft sweet scent of yeast and doughs drifted out to her causing her to smile. There were still those that did there part valiantly in hopes of bringing a smile to someone’s face. Slowly she continued her strolling.

Some time had passed since Ryuna had left the scene...
Rythe - Rim of New Eden, Main Gatehouse.

Rythe groaned as he glared up at the tall line of towers and interconnecting walls. He still smelled the foul scent of loss permeating through the air and felt the world's weight crushing him. Kicking the wagon trail marks lightly, he made his way towards the gatehouse doors, tearing them open and holding them until the trailing kitsune entered the stone building. He slammed the old door closed after entering, leaving it slightly shaking from the force of the closing. He grimaced slightly at his own work before beginning the journey up the stairs and onto the walls. "Now comes the downside of the walls."

His feet carried him up the stone staircases, grumbling about his lack of magic and the creeping exhaustion he felt nagging him in the back of his mind. Why couldn't he teleport long distances? Why did he have to be the magically inept Ethereal? Stuck with proxies whom always seemed to lack the little bit of power needed to finish his tasks in an orderly manner, it hounded him constantly.

Ryuna, District of Elysian, the Wall

The kitsune hadn’t intended to lag behind so much. She thanked the male for holding the doors open only to jump when he slammed the door shut behind himself. Her ears had flattened to her head as she did what came natural she scurried up to the top of the stairs in record time. Loud noises had always startled the female. It was the sort of thing that surprised most about her.

Ryuna located her master in a matter of moments having nearly ran into his broad back. Skidding slightly she put a hand out just as she hears the kind of sound she was sure she wouldn’t have ever heard. Glancing down she notice the shoe on her left foot was broken. The strap having come apart with a clean break where it would have met the sole between her first and second toe. It was a very bad omen.

“Master?” She asked still looking down at the shoe.

Rythe - Rim of New Eden, The Wall

Rythe squinted, quite unbelievingly, at the kitsune fleeing up the stairs. Never thought she'd be one to get scared by a door slamming... Regardless, he trudged up the final step, composing himself slightly before stepping out onto the wall segment. His composure instantly crumbled as he grabbed his arms in a sudden gust of freezing wind, his mortal body shivering uncontrollably. Curse this damn wall, who the hell builds walls this tall? He stared forward at Raakshdos before announcing his presence quite feebly, "W- what did you need, Grandmaster?"

Not even a subtle sign of hesitation could be found in the Grandmaster’s face as he continued to stare out into Oblitus, his hands folded behind his back. It was almost as if he were star struck, admiring the vast landscape for what may very well be the last time. His whole world was about to change as he prepared to assume control over the city. Much of the politics had been left to Grandmaster Anwil, leaving Raakshdos focusing on more pressing concerns like the safety and security of New Eden’s citizens. But now that he was the last remaining Grandmaster, it would be his responsibility to lead New Eden’s forces. The climate had been changing at a breakneck pace; first the King had fallen ill, and now Grandmaster Anwil had turned up dead in Oblitus. New Eden, now more than ever, needed steady leadership, the kind Raakshdos believed only he could provide in this time of need.

There was no questioning that Raakshdos towered over the pair standing behind him. At six foot eight, he was a titan to some, and a gentle giant to others. Many would argue that while he was a fierce competitor, he was still a man above reproach. He was a rather pragmatic individual, a realist, a person who viewed the world for what it was – nothing more, nothing less. The man had no time for nonsense and relied only on what had been proven to work in the past. When it came to following the law, for good or bad, he believed it was the only thing separating them from being animals.

With his blonde locks framing his face, he turned, paying little attention to the Ethereal as he knelt down in front of Ryuna. Clad in armor, his gauntlets seemed to almost disintegrate, turning to sand which sparkled under the morning sun, disappearing into the ether. With his hands bare, his fingers ran the course of the woman’s leg in an almost affectionate manner. “How many times must I tell you not to call me that? Friend will suffice.” Not even a smile was feigned as his fingers curled into one of her thighs, lifting her leg just enough to slip off the shoe which strap broke. Following suit with her other leg, he placed the shoes beside her and stood, his eyes, burning like two sapphires, catching hers briefly in his ascent.

“Is that hesitation in your voice, Ethereal?” His attention now rested on Rythe, with the colossuses shadow now stretching over the angel. It was an intimidating sight, one in which most had no reason to fear. “This is a day of mourning. In just over an hour hence, we bury a hero, so from this day forth I make a proclamation that this will be a day of remembrance. One in which we hail the sacrifices we have made in order to build a brighter tomorrow.” There seemed to almost be a hint of sorrow in his voice as he turned his attention to the city behind them. It looked so vivid from up there, the sights and sounds as the sun started to beat against the buildings, reflecting an almost divine light across the expanse.

“I must know what happened out there, Rythe. This wasn’t just an attack on a Grandmaster. It was an attack on our very way of life. People are going to begin asking questions, and it is only a matter of time before I’m going to be expected to make sure someone answers for this.” Just as the city would need to adapt to its role in the world, so would Raakshdos. He was no longer just a warrior anymore, but a politician. “I can only imagine what they are saying out there about me. We must put their fears to rest…”

Ryuna, District of Elysian, the Wall

Ryuna’s ears splayed slightly as they flattened to her head. Her golden gaze peeks up at the large male as he turned around and knelt to take off her shoes. The scolding and the gentleness of his touch left her unsure if she should feel ashamed or insulted. A scattering of red painted her pale cheeks and the bridge of her nose, “Yes, Ma--Raa.”

She went for the nickname she referred to him by in private. It was easier for her to say then friend or even is full name. Heavens only knew why when she was able to speak various dialects of daemon as if it was something everyone could do. When his eyes met hers she thought she saw something she knew but couldn’t understand.

As he turned his attention to the Ethereal she made herself seem busy as she looked over her veil and comb to make sure it was still in the pristine condition it had been this morning. She hummed softly as she pretended to dust a bit of something or other off the edge of the lace. Ryuna was a creature of habit. She didn’t like when things changed normally but due to being around humans she was slowly getting used to it. Humans had short lives while youkai -- otherwise known as daemen-- lived for lifetimes. She tried to focus on what was being said.

Rythe, Rim of New Eden, The Wall

Rythe stared blankly at the massive man kneeling down, slightly squinting at the sight unfolding before him. Sometimes that man was just plain odd in his eyes, stoic yet compassionate at the same time? What a peculiar man... I suppose I haven't exactly paid much attention to him compared to Anwil. Awkwardly, the Ethereal shifted in his spot until the Grandmaster turned his attention towards him, at which he blanked for a moment, "What?... No no, this gust is far too cold for this body."

He straightened himself, patting the small amount of snow off of his coat. "While this may be a dire day for the city, seeing as how we've lost a Grandmaster, I fear that I can't provide any certain murderer." He racked his memory for any instance of sighting the assailant, recalling an instance before beginning the tale.

Clearing his throat, Rythe began, "As you know, Anwil led the company out on an expedition to survey the surrounding Oblitus lands. When we crossed the threshold of known territory into the deeper lands, it was much darker with the canopy shrouding the ground in a dim darkness." He shifted slightly, reaching into the proxy's coat, pulling out an amber stone on his palm, lightly reflecting light out of itself. "We surveyed the area, the typical procedure, but we stumbled upon this," he shifted the stone to his fingers, turning it slightly, "it was embedded into an odd carving in the wall of one of the boulders and stones in the vicinity. At the time, we thought little of it and continued. Shortly after, there was a scream at the end of the group and a guardsman was missing. We would go searching for him, but the process repeated itself. We fled forward and ended up taking refuge in a cavern by a cliffside waterfall."

"Earlier, here in New Eden, I examined the stones and found traces of magic imbued in them, vanished long before we chanced upon it. It was in the class of summoning, which leads me to suspect golemancy or another subclass of the art."

He averted his eyes slightly, obviously uncomfortable with the remainder of the tale, he cleared his throat and continued, "It was on the journey back to New Eden that Anwil was taken. If... if it weren't for my incompetence, he would be alongside us today. There was distrust brewing in the remainder of the company, fearing that they had been lured into a trap by the Grandmaster, to us all, it was all too coincidental to be attacked on such a crucial mission at this exact area he had chosen to explore... At a critical moment... he was dragged off with his arm outstretched towards me."

He concluded his story with a shaky breath, distressed, anxious, and disappointed.
"I never took it."

Raakshdos didn’t fail to notice Rythe’s gaze, and could only imagine how odd a sight he must have been. Very few people could ever get a clear read on him, which was just the way he wanted it. Some believed him to be the strong, stoic type, and others saw a softer side, one full of heart. The truth of the matter was, Raakshdos only let others see what they wanted to; whatever side of him it took to get what he wanted. He wore many faces, always whichever one seemed more pragmatic under the circumstances. Although, there was the slightest, genuine hint of compassion, for Ryuna; a tender loving creature that had been with him almost since the beginning of his journey.

She was a weapon, a power to be harnessed and wielded. At the same time, she had emotions, feelings that needed to be nurtured and cared for. There were a lot of things she failed to understand, but in due time, Raakshdos would give her the answers she so desperately sought. As he took in Rythe’s words, they seemed to do little to faze him. The fact of the matter was, he was no stranger to making poor decisions, and had little time to dwell on such nuances. People seemed to focus too much of their time on what they should or shouldn’t have done, while Raakshdos only looked to the future.

His back was turned for much of the monolog, and very little was said at first. “I suppose an Ethereal can feel fear, after all. Hesitation… regret. You have no use of such emotions. You have lived a thousand lifetimes, Ethereal. Seen things some of us only dream of. Aditi has a plan for all of us… I have no doubt.” Words trailing off, he sighed, crossing his arms and nodding to himself as everything begun making sense. He knew what he needed to do. “We have a funeral to attend, do we not? That will be all.” Waving the Ethereal to leave, he continued to stand there sparingly, still staring out into the unknown.

Rythe, Rim of New Eden, The Wall

Rythe scratched his head, a bit confused at first. Seen things no one should ever think to sight as well... There isn't much difference between an Ethereal and a human in terms of emotion... It can be quite burdensome some- always. I suppose the people believe what they wish to believe. He nodded in confirmation before kneeling down on the stone floor, shutting his eyes, feeling his strength drain momentarily. Upon opening his eyes again, he stared at the gray stone encasing around him, back in the Cathedral.

Moments after the proxy's body knelt and shut his eyes, they snapped open with loud panicked hyperventilation. The man swiftly collapsed on his side, shivering intensely from the cold. He slowly stood, glancing around until laying eyes upon Raakshdos, to which he quickly bowed and began his descent down the staircase. From within the building, his voice came, muffled and quickly fading, "That Ethereal lied... where am I?..."

Ryuna, District of Elysian, the Wall

In all the years Ryuna had been around she found herself completely spacing out over the conversation being had not far from her. It wasn’t like her to not pay any attention to her surrounds. Perhaps she was just becoming rusty and lax in her manner of conducting herself. Closing her eyes for a moment she let the cold winter wind sing to her carrying the woes of the mourning to her now perked ears.

The wind’s song was one that made her sure it wasn’t the same as it had been. Her eyes parted slightly to stare out at the great wilds that expanded out seemingly forever. She hadn’t feared that wild place, felt she had no reason to. If anything having been down around the trunks of the great forest she felt at home. Like any beast might. While she didn’t go there anywhere as often as she might like she did so knowing there was danger at every step.

A hum trailed from her lips as she noticed the conversation had died. Her golden gaze danced over to him, “Raa,” She called so softly before moving closer to his right. Her head rested against the side of his arm, “Who are we?”

Uriel, outskirts of New Eden, atop the city walls

The archangel landed near Raakshados and his sword spirit. Collecting his wings and looking at them.
"...Morning, Raakshados, Ryuna. I thought I would come to check how you're doing"

He stated with a serious expression on his face, looking up at the warden. Who was indeed way taller than him, but not bigger than his wings.

Things were finally starting to move in the right direction, and while he may have lost a brother in arms, it had paved the way for his rise. There were still a lot of preparations to be made, but this was the beginning of a journey that was years in the making. Draping an arm around Ryuna’s shoulder, he had no comforting words to ease her troubled heart. He knew far more than he let on and was a bit perplexed about how she had to come to begin asking these questions. It wasn’t something he planned for, nor expected from her, which only puzzled him further. Rarely was he ever wrong, or his methods not absolute. At the same time, she was a creature unlike any other, so there were bound to be some complications.

Heeding little of Rythe’s puppet, Raakshdos didn’t have even a moment to acknowledge Ryuna before Uriel appeared behind them. “Another Ethereal. Must be my lucky day.” He thought to himself before yet again diverting his attention away from the landscape in order to focus it on the angel. “As good as any day when destiny comes knocking at your door. Except, it didn’t just knock, did it?” Catching Ryuna’s gaze from the corner of his eye, he started towards the steps leading to the ground below. “As I just finished informing Rythe, we have a funeral to attend I believe. It would look ill-suited if we were not present, don’t you think? People might start thinking there is a conspiracy afoot.

The kitsune’s ears were all that swiveled to show she knew that the etheral was near. She was busy waiting only to realize she would continue waiting as she seemed to be for ages. Taking a breath she again only half listened till her master’s eye caught hers. Like the ever valiant weapon she smiled and listened closer before following Raakshdos her long tails fanning out. Her ears stood tall as finally glanced at the one that had come to them.

Uriel furrowed his brow " well, I will be attending the funeral. I was just wondering. Will you lead the Wardens on your own from now or... will you also choose someone else to help you carry that weight?. If I may ask, of course. "The archangel said. "I understand if you cannot answer me right now, as you must be... affected by the loss of your Grandmaster. " he sighed then, wings stretching for a moment before just being collected again. " We have never had much to do with each other, but if there's anything I can do to help you through this difficult moments... " Uriel offered the man a small smile. " I will be glad to do so."

“This isn’t the time to speak of such things, Uriel.” Of course, Raakshdos had already considered his course of action moving forward, and would make such formal announcements once the city had healed. For now, it wasn’t the time to talk of replacing Grandmaster Anwil, but a time to rejoice in his memory - the legacy he left behind which Raakshdos knew would be hard to live up to. “I appreciate it, Uriel. Hopefully, together, we can find a way to put this terrible tragedy behind us and do right by not only New Eden but her citizens which I am here to faithfully serve.” Descending down the steps onto the streets below, he stood solemnly, patiently awaiting the arrival of...

Rim of New Eden, Main gate crossroads

It was built of British Elm, rimmed with a light trim of gold, and brilliantly crafted by the master wood craftsmen of New Eden. The pallbearers steadily marched into the city, framed by the massive arches of the main gates. Within the casket, the body of Warden Grandmaster Ceolen Anwil lay hidden beneath of cover of the forest green pall with the Eden flag embroidered onto its center. Upon reaching the crossroads of the streets, the coffin was placed upon a prepared pedestal while the pallbearers were replaced with the senior Wardens, having once served under the deceased Grandmaster. Joined by a simple procession of instruments, bore by the most skilled musicians present in the city, the group began with a simple, melancholic tune of loss and mourning, yet beautiful in its flourishes, setting a bright hopeful tone in the near future. They proceeded, marching towards the center of the city as the music powerfully resonated through the relatively silent city.

Maxwell seemed to have arrived just in time as the music began its slow, respectful rise of an old Warden's victory song. He recognized the melody from his own, and every other Warden acceptance ceremony he's ever attended. This, however, was slower, and lower, making a sort of melancholy song to follow the coffin as it made its way to its final resting place.

Maxwell slowed his step when he reached the edge of the crowd. He wondered briefly if he should be closer to the coffin, but he'd rather not start pushing people aside. Crowds made him uncomfortable anyways. Instead he held back, his eyes scanning the many faces. He saw familiar faces aplenty here. Fellow wardens come to show their respect and follow their lost Grandmaster one last time. In the distance he caught the radiant wings he knew anywhere. Uriel, and he stood beside their surviving Grandmaster, the angel Rythe, and the kitsune Ryuna.

He watched them a moment, then turned his gaze towards the coffin, a chill sliding up his spine.

Micheal and Ratchel
Main Gate crossroads.

Ratchel and Micheal arrived just in time to hear the music. It was the Old warden victory song, thought slower and lower. in the distance she recognized the large wings radiant of Uriel standing beside, Raakshdos, and two others that she had never seen before. Micheal seemed happy seeing the old Angel but even he knew that now was not the time to talk to Uriel. Ratchel turning her attention to the Coffin felt a coldness go through her body..
