Azra'il Age: 1033 Height: 5'9" Weight: ----- Azra'il, born Valeria Schuyler, is a vengeful human spirit known as The Vengeance. It is said in the Book of Monsters that revenants aim to seek revenge for a cruel, unnatural, or unjust death, and will not rest until the deed is done. In her childhood, Valeria had many gifts. She could paint, play piano, and dance, but loved being in nature and riding horses most of all. In her prime, Valeria was beautiful, charming, and clever. She married into the Deepwinter House and had three children, a son, and a set of twins, boy, and girl. Shaped by the radical politics of the family, Valeria used her gifts to manipulate situations to her favor and give her children the best of everything. She lived for the love of her family. Things changed when her elder sister and best friend, Elvira, married to the head of the house, died of poisoning, and Valeria was accused of killing her out of envy and ambition. Sentenced to serve the holy church in a kingdom across the sea, Valeria's bitter heart was softened by the orphans. As she stayed in their home, she became close friends of the Correas, and with a woman named Maribel in particular. At some point, she fell in love with her. But things were not as they seemed in the so-called holy church. She began to experience abuse at the hands of the clergy. Too inquisitive for her own good, she discovered corruption, ritual sacrifice, and worst of all, vampires.... One of the vampires modified her memories with magic so she believed that the children were demon-possessed. Valeria set fire to the orphanage but broke when she heard their dying screams. She was locked away in the church's Sanatorium, where she died at the hands of the vampires. The body was returned to Deepwinter Hold, where Azra'il rose. Terrified of the implications and the havoc the revenant might cause between the houses, she was locked away in the Hold. Wards were placed on every door and window, so she could never escape. A useless effort, as magic was banned not long after this. Yet Azra'il endured. The wards could no longer keep her, yet she stayed, as with the loss of magic, so, too, did she forget the reason why. | Generations passed, and she watched her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, grow, live, and die. Living on as an eternal governess, Azra'il helped to raise them up, and kept the traditions of old alive and well through her teachings. Protecting the family from the shadows, the Head of the House was her ear. Often she would leave the hold for days and be found wandering in the woods. Whispers of the woman in the woods became a local legend as hundreds of years went by. Finally, a child was born unto the family, James, who reminded her so much of her own son with an uncanny resemblance. It rekindled something old and dead in her soul. When the Book of NIght was opened, and she came across one of its pages, it all came flooding back. The fire, the screams, the vampires, and the Correas. Azra'il stripped off the ancient dress, took up her family's sword, and left Deepwinter Hold a dead woman on a mission without any intention of coming back. |
