Otherworld Academy for Wayward Gods
OOC/Sign-Ups/IC

Mausoleum.jpg

What is the Otherworld Academy?

Ever since man saw the Sun, his society has been fuelled by the worship of some form of higher being. Little did man know that the worship of these higher beings fueled Them in return...

As technology developed and new machines spread throughout the globe, faith in the Gods of Old began to fade. Neptune could no longer master his seas. Thor could no longer bend lightning to his will. The world no longer bent to beings such as Zeus...

Without faith to fuel their power, the Gods grew to fall into mortality. Reincarnations seemed to become rarer and rarer, and the ranks of each pantheon began to shrink. Thus, the God's of the Old World came together to create a failsafe:

The remaining reincarnated Gods would be tracked down as soon as they were born and taken to the Hellfire Caves as soon as they were born. Here they would be trained to manage their growing, primal powers, and hopeful have amassed more power by the time they finally achieved full Godhood. Maybe then the Old Gods could survive, at least for a few more centuries.

Thus, the Otherworld Academy was formed, a place of teaching for the teenage Gods. Under the watch of Principal Athena, the Students were trained in all the core subjects: Languages, Mathematics, Dietic History, Ability Control and the Processes of Godhood.

Dozens of teenagers with slowly developing powers are thrown together during the most confusing years of their life.

What could possibly go wrong?

--------------------------
Character Driven Plot
Each player will take control of a reincarnated God from any pantheon of their choosing, and will live out their final year at the Otherworld Academy. You will choose their clique, how they interact with their fellow classmates, whether or not they are passing their classes... and to what extent their Godly abilities will have manifested. The characters will be given tremendous power over the plot- depending on how the students can interact, depends on whether or not the year will end in tragedy or triumph. Will Otherworld start a rivalry with another school? Will gang violence find its way into the corridors? Will the students be forced to solve a murder committed by one of their peers? It's up to you whether these young adults will come together before graduation, or will their actions involve the school getting burned to the ground.

"It's going to be a year to remember, students. It's up to you to make sure it is remembered for all the right reasons..."

------------------
Character Sheet

Due to the fact that many of these students will have known each other for a good 6 years of their lives, developing a little bit of backstory is important:

God Name:

Which Reincarnated God will you be taking control of, and what are they the ancient God of?

Pantheon:

Which pantheon of God has your student been reincarnated from? Roman? Norse? Egyptian? Something Else?

Nickname:
Does your character go by any other name other than their God name? Though the school encourages students to use their God/True name, students are allowed to abbreviate it should they choose

Powers and Abilities:
How will your Student's Godly abilities have manifested so far? Of course, due to the fact that the students are still mortal until they turn 21, they will not have the full extent of their abilities. E.I. Aphrodite wouldn't be able to control minds with love, but she could possibly subliminally suggest things to people, or Hades wouldn't be able to raise the dead etc.

Brief Backstory:

As reincarnations, these young gods will not have the memories of their power-sakes, and will thus have developed new personalities. Most of the students currently attending the school will have been taken at before they started high school, but many transfers will have grown up with their own families and discovered their powers at their own accord and being sent to Hellfire.

Think about what clique your student might fall into, where or not they are on any sports teams, whether they love or hate a particular subject, what their attitude towards school is, whether or not they have any specific friends or partners already going to the school and (for transfers).

Don't worry about writing a novel here- write as little or as much as you like

Transfer/Current Student
Will depend on whether or not they are part of an established clique

Name: Ailuros (Preferred Nickname: Aila) -Another name used for the Cat Goddess Bast/Bastet (reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastet)

---->Affiliations:
  • Warfare
  • Moon
  • Cats (Especially lions and domestic cats)
  • Protection against disease
  • Perfume (?)
Age: 18

Pantheon: Egyptian

Appearance: Aila in her newest reincarnation was born in Europe rather than anywhere close to Egypt, thus her appearance is far fetched from the usually dark Mediterranean look. She has maintained her olive skin-tone, but instead has waist-length hair with definite waves the colour of pale gold rather than a dark black. Her eyes are large and bright emerald green-gold like those of a cat. When she gets extremely upset or irritated, her pupils contracts to form a thin slit like that found in felines. Her eyes are framed by dark lashes. Aila most often wears tight-fitting light blue jeans and a loose, white cotton top along with white sneakers. This outfit suits her curvy, toned figure. In each of her ears are two silver piercings in the lobes while her right ear has a silver hoop helix piercing. The only other jewelry she wears is a short, silver chain necklace with a miniature-sized tiger-eye pendant as well as three silver rings she wears on different fingers. This goddess has a tattoo of the different moon phases on the top her left index finger while on her right ankle she has a tattoo of the eye of Ra. Both tattoos were acquired while she was in Otherworld Academy.

Personality: She can be quiet at times, just observing those around her and gathering information. At other times she can be demanding, speaking until someone listens to her. Aila takes a while to trust, but is still curt and friendly to new people she meets. She is bold and courageous, but can easily become moody and irritable if someone pushes her buttons. All her life she has had a burning hatred and fear of snakes (Google: Apep and Bast)

Powers/Abilities: Being a cat goddess, Aila is always very light on her feet. She can be quiet at times and extremely stealthy, easily sneaking up on people. She is also extremely flexible and co-ordinated, with very little fear of heights or falling as she almost always lands on her feet. Aila is most comfortable wielding a khopesh (type of curved sword) and does not back down from a fight. During battle or confrontation, Ailuros will rely on speed, agility and outsmarting her opponent rather than brute force. This female also has rather good hearing and sight, with her ability to see in the dark being the same as in daylight.

Backstory: Aila had no connection with her former lives when she was born and raised, having lost any memory of her previous reincarnations as most of the other Gods and Goddesses had. She lived in an European city for the beginning of her life, her childhood mostly normal except for the enormous amount of stray cats that frequently visited her family's home. It wasn't until an incident at the Zoo that her parents began to question who their daughter was. For her thirteenth birthday the family had gone to her favourite place, the wild feline exhibit, since the zoo had recently added a new white North-African lion cub to their lion exhibit. During their time there, while her parents were busy buying lunch, Aila had disappeared. After hours of searching and bringing in the help of the police, Aila was found in the lion's enclosure where she had climbed in and fallen asleep. What her parents couldn't understand though was the complete acceptance the lions had shown towards her, the lionesses lying around the girl protectively while the newest lion cub had curled up right under her arm.

From that day onward, her parents acted strangely towards her. They stepped on eggshells whenever she was in the room and were often heard whispering whenever she wasn't around. This unsettled the girl, making her sleep restlessly and often brought nightmares of a large snake that would wrap around her and try squeeze her to death. She had had the same nightmares when she was younger, but since the incident at the zoo the nightmares had become more frequent and realistic.

In this time the visits from cats became even worse, the girl waking up one morning to find her house flooded with every cat found in her neighbourhood. This was the last straw, causing the girl to begin researching the dream fragments and also becoming obsessed with learning about felines so that she could find out what was wrong with her. Her online activity (over the three months after the zoo incident) was detected by those who operated in the Hellfire caves. Soon enough she had people knocking on her door with answers to all the questions that had been eating her alive for months.

Her parents were never told the truth, just that she had been accepted to go to a school for gifted individuals far away. After all the strange events that had been happening, they were more than happy to finally get relief with her departure.

She packed up and left, insisting that she stop by at the Zoo before setting off for Otherworld Academy to begin there as a first year. Her travelling companion she picked up at the zoo before leaving made everything seem more fitting, since the North-African lion cub had been the trigger which had started it all. She decided to name him Mau (Egyptian for cat) and since her condition of accepting to stay the Academy was that the cub be allowed to remain with her, Principal Woden had been happy to oblige in helping her obtain the animal.

She remained at Otherworld Academy until her final year, Mau growing along with her as she developed new powers. She loved sport, set her mind to doing well in class and tried to stay out of as many fights as she could unless the person involved was really asking for it.

Aila visits her parents each year for Christmas while Mau remains at the academy, but they have never found out what...or rather who, she is.

Brief Backstory:
Nat, after his birth was sent directly to Hellfire Caves of course, so he has no memory of his parents, he grew up quickly learning all he could about his own powers and using any spare time he had studying his fellow reincarnations to study their weaknesses and strengths all at quite a young age. His father never managed to visit him, he was too busy carrying souls to the underworld, but he did manage to leave him a large stygian iron broadsword, intricate runes carved down it’s black blade in a blood red color, he has no idea what they do still but he hopes something powerful, he’s been attending the academy for three years now, and has done so under the radar of most of the students finding easy conversation with Athena on battle strategy and with the Dietic history teacher learning all he can before the end of his senior year.

His powers developed slowly like most reincarcerated gods it started with seeing one or two souls a month and then it increased to 10 or 15 a week until eventually he saw and heard every lost soul to ever walk the earth, he like his father adapted to the use of a transparent black blindfold that would allow him to see only the souls he wanted to and not all of them all at once.

God Name: Ninsi'anna, as aspect of Innanna/Ishtar associated with the planet Venus, particularly as the evening and morning star; affiliated with divination (particularly haruspicy), justice, some warlike attributes, and guidance for travelers. Originally female, Ninsi'anna is referred to by both masculine and feminine pronouns, though her name means "divine lady, illumination of heaven".

Pantheon: Mesopotamian/Sumerian

Nickname: Nina; was born Andrew

Powers and Abilities:
No matter how bleak the situation, things always seem to come up right for Nina, and her family and friends have joked that she has "the devil's own luck". Her ability to find her way in darkness--either literal darkness or metaphorical--is uncanny, and she seems to have an innate sense of direction, even in new places. She isn't prone to starting fights, but she will end them if provoked.

As her powers expand and grow, she will be able to actually create light that ranges from a dim, ambiance glow to a powerful, blinding beacon. She will also be able to focus her luck more and grant luck--good or bad--to others. Lastly, she will be able to see fully in total darkness.

Brief Backstory:
Nina was born as Andrew Sattari to parents of mixed American/Persian background. As a young boy, Andrew never felt quite "right" in his skin, and was often picked on for being feminine and preferring "girly" games and toys over that which boys were "supposed" to like. In his early teens, Andrew first heard the term "transgender", and realized that the reason he never felt correct as Andrew was because he was meant to be a girl; thus his transition to becoming Nina began.

Her parents were very supportive but concerned about the levels of teasing and bullying only increasing as their son transitioned. It was for this reason that they opted to send Andrew, newly transitioned to Nina, to Otherworld Academy, a place where their daughter could fully be herself and express her new identity without being haunted or hurt by those who had made her life hell as Andrew.

Despite the cruelty of some, Nina was able to make several good friends throughout her childhood, with whom she still keeps in contact. As an only child, she is the apple of her parents' eyes, and because of the solid, supportive foundation of her home life was she able to find the strength to be true to herself.

On the surface, Nina seems like a perfectionist; her makeup and manner of dress is always flawless, and she is an exceptional student. She is quite tall for a female at 6' even, and this can be intimidating at times. Once Nina warms up to someone, however, they find she is a gregarious, warm, and kind-hearted individual.

Transfer/Current Student
Nina transferred to Otherworld Academy at the start of her sophomore year, so she's spent less time there than characters who have been attending for years.

Quick note--I just want to emphasize that I mean no disrespect in playing a trans woman, nor do I intend to treat this character like a joke. The image is actual trans-woman Jenna Talackova, who was the inspiration for this character. I hope I can play Nina with the level of dignity and grace that Jenna herself exudes. ^_^

God Name:
Louis Nicol. Reincarnation of Lugh of the Long Arm. Not really associated with anything.
Patron of:
  • Skill
  • The arts and crafts
  • Oaths, Truth and Law
  • Storms
Pantheon:
Ancient Gaelic (Irish) god, part of the Tuatha Dé Danann (Basically if the Greek/Roman gods were forest spirits.)

Age: 18

Nickname: N/A

Appearance: Standing at a striking 6’5”, Louis’ body is composed almost entirely of form fitting muscle, wire-y body coupled pale olive skin and bright, nearly neon emerald eyes that seemed to shine against the rest of his body and contrasted with the sharp, angular look that naturally formed on his face. He has short dark brown hair that is swept back, away from a clean shaven and permanently smirking face.

He is dressed in a rather tight fitting grey t-shirt, with darker grey trousers and black sneakers. One of his ears is pierced, with a simple black dot for an earring.

Powers and Abilities:
Louis has a natural talent at all things that require physical work, able to pick up incredibly complicated subjects with ease and master something entirely new within a matter of minutes. Because of this, he finds himself extremely competent at any sport he should try, as well as the arts and construction. However, he finds himself struggling with the more mental side of things such as Math, not used to actually having to try.

He is also physically unable to lie or be lied to in turn, as he is able to see through any falsehoods. Following along that strand, should he and another being make an oath they must follow it.

As he matures he will slowly begin to come into the rest of his domain, gaining influence with storms and lightning, as well as developing a link with nature and the ability to summon his iconic, flaming spear.

Brief Backstory:
Born and raised in Scotland, Louis lived under the godly radar as his powers manifested in subtle and incremental ways, making it so that instead of seeing the ancient god of storms and skill reborn, the gods in charge of Otherworld Academy simply saw a particularly gifted, if cocky, mortal.

This changed when the second part of Louis’ power manifested, the inability to lie or be lied to. After lashing out at a few of his former rugby teammates, who had secretly been harbouring resentment at how easy he had it, he was found and taken forcibly by the gods of Otherworld.

Quickly falling back into his role as a Jock, Louis found himself rather enjoying being around people that could give him a challenge, making sure to crow with every victory as he played every sport he could. Life was good, as long as he simply ignored maths and kept having fun at school. Sure, he didn’t see his parents anymore, but he found it was easier than he thought it would have been to move on from them.

With all these interesting characters, I'm getting more and more excited for this RP:D

All the gods we've chosen are pretty competitive so I feel there should be some sort of school vs school sport or competition among the school houses with multiple categories. :)

Also very interesting to see that everyone has chosen unusual gods, not the typical Zeus/Hades/Poseidon thing which I really appreciate because it makes things stray from the boring norm :D
