The Vampire's Apprentice

Sam was having a blast! There was so much to smell! So much to see! So much to listen to! He was not a fan of the train, but he handled it well. He leaned against Kitty's leg and growled softly until the roaring monster passed. He would not let such a beast attack his person! He snorted proudly when it was gone, then in seconds caught sight of the seagulls. His butt wiggled in excitement as he barked and lunged at them. Oh, he knew he had no hope of catching them, but it was fun to hear them scold and scatter!

Norville walked beside Kitty, mostly watching the ripples of the water and the few boats in the harbor bobbing serenely. He wondered what it would be like to live in a marina on a boat. It looked peaceful. Was it as peaceful as it appeared? Or was it like the proverbial iceberg with only a tip showing and a whole lot of trouble brooding beneath the surface?

When the kid came over, he couldn't stop staring as Sam sat and happily accepted the pets. The kid looked just like his younger siblings. He sighed sadly when he left. Maybe he could call home? If they still even lived in the same place... he could call his mother's cell, perhaps? Surely the police weren't looking for him as vigorously anymore. He shoved his hands into his pockets gloopily as he trailed behind Kitty, not even the sparkling water able to draw him out of his funk.

Sam pulled gently on his leash more than he ever had before, tiring himself out and causing his throat to get sore and raspy. There was just an overwhelming amount of newness!

Kitty touched her companion gently on the shoulder, trying to catch his attention without being too distracted by Sam's pull on the leash. It wasn't hard to notice Norville's sudden dip, though its cause she could only guess.

"You doin' alright there, bud? Is it about time we went back?"

"I'm alright," Norville mumbled. "I just... kind of miss my family a bit." He sighed and glanced up. "It is starting to kind of get dark. If we start heading back now, we won't have to rush."

Though she didn't exactly understand the feeling, she nodded anyways. "Bet life kinda turned itself on its head, didn't it?" Kitty asked. "Having to leave so suddenly and all that. I bet they miss you bunches, too."

"Just a bit. I mean... this new life isn't bad so far, but... you know. Change is hard." He gave her a helpless shrug.
Sam yawned then barked at another seagull. This gull glared at him and cawed hoarsely.

Silently, she agreed, and having nothing much else to say, she continued on in that silence. It was hard not to smile at Sam, though.

Sam glared at the seagull.

The seagull glared back.

Sam barked, lunging forward a step.

The seagull puffed itself up, threw out its wings, and "laughed" maniacally at Sam, hopping at him.

Sam yelped and fall back to cower behind Kitty's legs. Scary! Scary bird! He did not like that bird!

"Shoo!" Norville scolded and waved a hand. The gull gave him an irritable look but seemed proud of scaring the dog as it took flight.

Kitty chuckled and rubbed Sam's boulder of a head. This dog, who was complimented by werewolves for being "street," was afraid of a simple seagull. It was comical irony in the best sense.

Sam huffed and leaned into Kitty's head rubs. That bird was a scary, evil thingy. Not a natural bird at all!

"We should probably go before Sam gets eaten by the birds," Norville smirked.

Sam realized they were heading back to the car and stepped ahead smartly, head high as he sniffed the salty sea air. He had never actually seen a large body of water before, and he liked the smell of it, though he hadn't figured out what it was yet.

The hotel was maybe ten minutes away, at worse; the area wasn't too big, unless one went further inland, in which case the town grew to a more considerable size. It made getting lost rather difficult... unless a person were distracted by scenery and not paying attention to street signs, which was fairly easy. Not that many people were here to visit. Those who had been present for a while could drive with their eyes closed and never miss a beat.

Norville watched out the window while Sam snored in the back. He made the occasional comment about something they were passing, but other than that, he stayed silent and moody all the way back to the hotel as the sun slowly inched its way down. Clancy would be up within the hour.

Kitty watched Norville from the corner of her eye for most of the trip. Upon arrival to their destination, she went to wake and release Sam from the back, but didn't yet inquire as to why her companion was grumpy. She wanted to see if he would change once they were inside.

Norville left Kitty to Sam, for once not even checking to see if she needed help as he went straight up to their room.

Sam grumbled at being woken but stretched and yawned before following his person. He had thoroughly tired himself out and was ready for a drink and bedtime!

She didn't take it too hard, though she was concerned for him. Kitty followed him into the room and made sure Sam's water dish was filled for the night.

Norville sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the wall, rubbing his arm fretfully. Maybe he should call them... but would they want to hear from him? After what happened? He wasn't sure. What he put them in some kind of danger? Either from the police or something supernatural. Did he want to hear his mother's voice? He had a feeling he would come unglued.

Kitty set Sam's bowl on the floor and plopped down next to Norville, not trying to gather his attention in any other way. Not yet. It depended on if he noticed her or not.

Either way, he looked troubled, and that worried her. What was bothering him so? Was it simply stress? Something else? Could she help?

Norville didn't react to her presence for several minutes. Then, suddenly, he scooted over closer to her and leaned into her shoulder, resting his head on her lightly.

Kitty was low-key surprised, though it didn't show. She let him rest there a moment before shifting to wrap her short arms around his skinny frame, not sure what else to do.
