Innocent Monsters

Mari looked around at her surroundings once more. There was a little table with a towel on it, and next to it was a corridor she hadn't noticed before. She decided to go look down it, and came across a door that was ever so slightly open.
"Did the jabs go well?" she heard a deep voice from inside the door.
"Yes, they reacted as expected," Said a feminine voice.
"Good, just what we need. If everything else goes as planned, we could get on gathering some older test subjects and see if they react the same,"
"Yes," As the feminine voice turned to leave, Mari dashed away, terrified what would happen if she got caught.

Risina yawned, her head resting against the soft pillow-like wall. She got up, feeling a small throbbing pain in her arm but she blocked it out. Risina looked around, her eyes looking at the people around her. Wait, where was everybody? Where was the other girl? She went out of a small room into a large winding corridor. A scientist looked at her and she looked at them.
"Shit." Risina cursed, darting down the corridor.

"Quickly, get him into the water!"
Those were the first words Kenny heard, before being lifted off a metal table and placed in a large, cylindrical tank. The lid closed, and the tank began moving.
Kenny blinked as his mind slowly began processing the current situation. His tank was large enough for him to completely stretch out and move around, the water fairly warm. He raised a hand to the glass, then paused, shocked. The appendage was thin and bony, the fingers lacking nails, the skin blue-green. He gazed down at his long, spindly legs and webbed feet, also blue-green. Running his hands down his face and body, he felt his lithe build and sleek skin and realized, to his horror, he was naked.
'This can't be real,' thought Kenny, pulling his knees to his chest and wrapping his arms around them to shield himself. 'I can't be this...this thing...whatever I am!'
His right arm burned, and he clutched it and winced. When it subsided, he removed his hand to find a penny-sized bruise with a dot in its center. Mind reeling, Kenny placed his head in his arms and sighed, blowing bubbles.
The tank slowed to a stop, followed by retreating footsteps. Kenny blinked and looked up, taking in his new surroundings. He was in a large, white room, surrounded by what he originally assumed to be normal humans about his age, but upon closer inspection, he noticed they, too, possessed animal-like features, like pointed ears and tails.
'Okay...maybe this isn't a dream,' Kenny thought. Slowly, he uncurled himself and swam to the glass wall, pressing a hand against it and staring ahead.
 
Mari arrived back into the room to find a new arrival. She jerked back, scared but in awe of this creature in front of her.
"Hello," Her ear twitched and she walked towards the tank. she walked around it, inspecting it "Your beautiful," She looked up at him. The scientists had really outdone themselves this time.

The voice in her head.

A scientist was filling out some paperwork when he noticed Risina dash down the corridor. "Hey wait!" He shouted after her. "Where do you think your going? get back to your room!"

She gaped at the boy in the tank, before realising he had no clothes and looking away. Why did she find it so odd that there was a boy who was part fish? She didn't even know what she had turned into, so it shouldn't surprise her that other people looked so bizarre. Instead, she watched Mari, who seemed fascinated by the boy. She had to admit the transformation was impressive, but not quite as awesome as the other girl seemed to think.
 
The amphibious teen looked away with a sheepish smile. He thought he was strange-looking, but glad someone else didn't. He reached up and cracked the lid open a few times, then lightly tapped it.
 
Kenny rapped his knuckles against the lid and looked at her, then around the room at the others, eyes narrowed slightly.
 
The amphibian nodded slowly and put both hands against the glass wall, smiling and blowing bubbles.
 
"Okay," Mari climbed up on-top of the tank, struggling but succeeding. She pulled at the hatch and the tank opened. Something deep inside of her knew it would be bad if he got out... Very deep.
 
As soon as the lid was up, Kenny immediately surfaced until his head and shoulders were out, taking in huge gulps of oxygen. Gripping the tank's brim, his large, bright green eyes blinked as he studied the room and its occupants once more.
 
She couldn't help it. She had to continue staring; he was just so interesting! She knew he might think she was being rude, but she wasn't trying to be. Aratani waved at him from where she was sat and smiled warmly.
 
Hamano completely gave up on prying the drawer open with her fingernails - which happened to be a lot longer than she ever remembered them being - and stood up straight with a sigh. She arched her back a bit, a little stiff from having crouched there so long, and turned just in time to see the new arrival get rolled in.

She wandered over to see the amphibian along with everyone else. "Hm, he's either an outlier, or this room isn't the only place we'll be spending our time in this game," she said thoughtfully as she walked around the tank. She didn't seem surprised to find Mari crawling up on top of it and popping the lid.

Taking advantage of the opportunity to gather more info, she stood up on tippy-toes and tried to dip her hand in Kenny's tank water. "I wonder if this is salt water or fresh water?" she pondered out loud.
 
Luna watched as Mari opened the lid to the new amphibian-boy. Curious, she realized that he was the only non-mammal hybrid here. She stood back and said, "Should we really be... I don't know... opening that? I mean, it was closed for a reason. What if something bad happens to him?" she suggested timidly.

Kenny turned and watched another hybrid girl wander over to his tank, raise herself onto her toes, and try to dip her hand in the water, muttering something about a game. Deciding to play along, he dipped his own hand and held it out to her with a small smile. He breathed deeply and kicked his legs lazily.
