Mike Munroe and Josh Washington

Josh ignored Ciel so more and petted the hippogriff before he climbed up the stairs with the rest of the group and looked around, seeing that there were so many books. He paused, deciding what to do and knew to avoid the corpse because Ciel was there. He took a look and decided to examine the shelf of black books.

Mike meanwhile was by the corpse and tried to remove the other book, ie the one that Ciel wasn't going for. If he could get it out, he would try to read it to see if he could understand it.

Morrigan did not seem to regard the group with much thought, even as they introduced themselves and gave her gratitude. She breathed in slowly and regarded the crowd around her with a weary glance as she said, "Better for all of you to not misunderstand the situation. 'Twas not my intention to assist you, but merely happenstance. Going forward, that will likely continue to be the case." Her gaze focused on Constantine and gave the barest hint of a smile. Truthfully, his animated story about her being a 'man-eater' amused her. "If what Constantine says is true, our goals do indeed align for now. It should be obvious why I am here, Constantine. My coven looks out for one another."

Yuki nodded excitedly at all this, but she was eager to get moving. When Ben asked her what she thought of this place, she shrugged. "Hee, hee... is someone scared? Understandable, not everyone has a senpai like Mii-kun to protect them..." She made her way over to said girl while she spoke, looking mischievous.

"Mii-kun, you do know what has to be done, right?" She grabbed her friend by the arm and started pulling the girl up the stairs at a run. "The first to finish the test of courage is the most courageous, right? Come on!"

Morrigan looked back at the girls. "Right, do we intend to stand here all day and talk each other's ears off? 'Tis past time to go."

"Bloody magnanimous of you. Maybe we can use this mission as a chance to bond," Constantine facetiously replied when Morrigan answered his question, briefly glaring back at the lot behind him who were... engaging with each other in a less than endearing manner. He found it difficult to feel sorry for these kids with shit like this happening.

"Coven? What is she talking ab--Wah! Hold on, Yuki-senpai!" Miki started to ask Constantine, before she suddenly yelped lightly in surprise, caught off-guard when Yuki took a hold of her and practically blasted off, leaving the others behind without any warning.

"Yeah, yeah... Right on it," Constantine grunted when Morrigan spoke again, tossing his cigarette off the stairs and running behind the intrepid Yuki with the rest of the group in tow. With the stairs now completed thanks to Morrigan's appearance, they were all able to continue on their way, the long path eventually leading them to the true end of the stairs and into an old, wooden door. And behind such a door looked to be... a large room, something like a library.

n8LflgmTQda1-UvayuBnyg.png

The library in question was rather expansive, if not neglected, as personal libraries oft were. Candles, just like before, littered the walls, illuminating the otherwise dreary place, the light betraying the true darkness that lay within. Cobwebs and dust covered most of the shelves, though there were a few shelves that were mysteriously clean, devoid of any blemishes, between a shelf consisting entirely of blue books, one of red books, and another of black books.

The walls themselves also showed evidence of neglect, if not even abuse, with several blocks in the wall being destroyed, revealing hollow spots behind with only blackness behind. Some of the other blocks that were actually there on the other hand also happened to be noticeably cracked, as though weak and vulnerable, whether or not due to the erosion of age. After all, who knew just how old this entire castle was even supposed to be?

In the corner lay a skeleton on the floor, dressed in a light blue cloak, clutching two small books resembling journals or diaries under one arm, the books stained with a dried, dark red liquid (most likely old blood), and what looked like a metal cross under the other arm.

Now, then. Where to start looking around?

"I'll have you know I am the senpai, as opposed to the one who needs one, thank you very much," Lodestar proudly replies to Yuki, then points towards Astolfo, "probably towards that guy, and definitely that Zoe-"

As Yuki ran and dragged Miki along, Lodestar ran right behind them.

"Hey! Watch your step! N- ah well, we're all in a hurry anyways."

Lodestar continues to run.

"Oh right, I can fly. Why do I keep forgetting that I can fly?"

Correction - Lodestar hovered above the various steps.

"Astolfo!"

"Give me a while to desummon Hippogriff first~"

"Why don't you ride it?"

Ben remained Lodestar so that he could hover towards the heights of the library he generally couldn't reach without flight or, like a normal person would, a ladder. He examined their various titles under various colours.

"I always wanted to know what kind of literature Dracula reads. Oh wait, I just made that up."

"My apologies~" Astolfo, in the meantime, checks the diary that Ciel didn't already take.

"Wonder what kind of fate befell him?" Astolfo looks at what he can identify as a priest skeleton, then turns to Sebastian. "How can you touch that?"

Libra would join Sebastian in examining the cross. If it checked out, he could take it with him. "Perhaps it would aid in freeing Etrigan of his curse where my spell could not," he said.

Sumia would keep close to Miki and Yuki. Something told her the latter would be going out of her way to find trouble, so sticking besides them was the best course of action.

@Ver @Atomic Knight @Raptor Jesus

As others went to investigate the cross or stumbled on themselves to get their hands on the books the skeleton was holding, Grace opted to look over the library proper. What caught her eye was the surprisingly clean shelves compared to the dust. She looked through the books to see if there was anything of note about them.

"Oh, good heavens, don't tell me that you buy into all that cross nonsense as well. It's simply a stereotype." Sebastian replied, maintaining his usual polite tone as he spoke.

The first book from the cloaked skeleton -- the one that Ciel picked up -- was evidently a personal journey, as evidenced from the contents of the book. Though it was somewhat difficult to read through most of it, between the hasty handwriting of the author that resembled scribbles in a few spots, and the deteriorated quality of the pages (likely a result of the age, if this skeleton was indeed once a living person whose flesh had rotted away), Ciel would be able to make out the last two pages to have words written in them. It read as such:

Monsters right behind me. Not a lot of time. The lock won't hold. Need to figure out another way out of here. Certainly can't take them all on with a mimicry of the Sacred Flame and my cross boomerang.

Following this was a break in the paper, before he continued writing.

Something weird about the blocks in the wall. Some of them are hollow. But not enough to make an exit. Am I being toyed with?

Fiddled around with the "books." Thought I heard a clicking sound when I pulled at some of them in a pattern, but I forgot what it was, confound it all. I already pushed them back in my uneasiness. Maybe it was just my imagination. The number "four" definitely means something though. The books... What am I missing? Is there something else linked to it? Maybe it's the can--

The entry ended there, the page stained with dried blood. It was likely self-explanatory what happened from there.

As for the other book that belonged to the skeleton that Mike picked up, it was certainly... different, right from the get go. Certainly not a normal journal really. Somehow, the book seemed far better preserved than the journal, even seeming to glow a subtle hint of blue almost. Inside, the inscription read:

This mystic channeler should be taken care of with the utmost delicacy. Magic and witchcraft, while considered taboo by the intolerant common folk who know no better, is an art that could die off at any moment. There is no time to teach it it in depth when students are being put down at the guillotine for their gifts.

To whoever wields this, keep it if you desire, for as long as you hold on to it, you shall wield an extension of the power of the Sacred Flame. Though not perfect in its entirety, rather but a mimicry of the true spell, it should be sufficient to protect oneself from the creatures of darkness.

image.png

Mike now wielded the ability to conjure fire magic with his mind so long as he held possession of the book.

Or if he wanted to loan it to Astolfo (or anyone else), that was a possibility.

When Sebastian and Libra would examine the metal cross, on the other hand, there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary about it, except that it was just... very hard, even harder than what silver ought to be despite its appearance. The diary that Ciel picked up might give it a clue as to what it really was.

As for the bookshelves, at first glance, they might not have seen all that strange to Ben and Grace, but it didn't take long for them to spot a few oddities. All the spines of the books were completely blank, and more than that, they just felt off to the touch, the covers (and the "pages" within) feeling like they were made of something soft like wood instead of actual paper. On top of that, any attempt to pull them out to examine would be in vain, as the books would suddenly jam after sliding out a few inches, as though they weren't meant to be pulled out entirely. This applied to every shelf, from the dusty ones to the clean ones, essentially made up of fake books, it seemed.

"Huh, I guess they had password settings in the past," Lodestar says as he lands on the floor and transforms back into Ben.

"What are the chances one of these leads to a secret doorway?"

Ben peers at the books taken from the skeleton for a bit.

"Make an exit, through there?" Ben looks at the hollow blocks in the wall. "I'll go check what's even there to begin with."

Ben dials his Omnitrix as an alien was selected. During his transformation, his entire body was turned into a puddle of...

qrZtImL.jpg

"GOOP!" Ben's new form, Goop as it was called, exclaims, before he shoves his slime body into one of the hollow gaps in the brick wall to see what was beyond there.

"Sebastian, try throwing that cross," Astolfo suggests.

Ciel would read the contents of his journal out loud, earning nods from his butler as he spoke. When he was through reciting the contents, Sebastian simply turned to Libra.

P8iag.png

"Sir Libra, if you would be so kind as to lend me that cross for a moment." Sebastian said as he held out his hand for the cross. Assuming Libra handed it over, Sebastian would back up on his two feet and tried to find the pattern in the books that the journal spoke of.

"My dear Astolfo, there are better ways to solve problems than simply
throwing things." Sebastian chimed with a light chuckler in response to his request. If he were to find the book pattern that the journal spoke of, Sebastian would proceed to place the cross near the books, hoping that would provide a clue or even a pathway of sorts.

"Well, it is a boomerang," Astolfo adds. "but I guess some things have multiple uses. Like Hippogriff being a fine steed and a nice pillow for my head!"

Astolfo laughs for a bit.

Within the hollow gaps in the blocks, it didn't seem like there was any exit in sight for Ben, as only a few of the blocks turned out to be hollow, while most of the others were filled in nicely. Behind the blocks though, he did at least manage to find one bonus.

85133.original-2521.png

A pork chop.

Seemed like the only thing to be found behind the blocks.

On the other hand... Nothing happened when Sebastian tried to do anything with the cross in relation to the books. As the skeleton's journal seemed to indicate, its primary function seemed to be little more than a boomerang-like weapon.

"Hmm..." Sebastian hummed as the cross didn't seem to do anything. After a moment lost in thought, Sebastian turned to Mike.

"Ah, Sir Mike. May you use your pyromagnetic abilities on this here weaponized cross?" Sebastian suggested as he placed the cross down on the ground. Since Mike was the one with the book, he was hoping that the cross would light on fire.

Josh Washington

Josh raised a skeptical eyebrow as he couldn't pull the book out. That was strange. For some reasons, he decided to see if any of the books had titles and if he would able to see a pattern. He wondered if Mike was doing better than him.

Mike Munroe

Mike was surprised by his ability to manipulate fire after he read the book, taking a deep breath, trying to forget the vision from his past and pushing it aside. It was a lighter in the vision and this was himself. He listened to Ciel and was about to look to see if there were candles, but was cut off by Sebastian. " I can try," he said, aiming a bit of the fire magic at the cross.

"Hm," Sera approached the shelves of fake books, a hand on her chin as she stared at it thoughtfully. "So it's some sort of puzzle, right? Like, pull the right books out and it'll open?"

Deciding that made sense, she attempted to see into the situation, seeing if her ability would let her find any hints as to which books to pull out.

As Goop emerges from the hole in the wall, a flash of Green light engulfs him.

Ben Tennyson appears, holding the plate pork chops in his hand and biting and chewing chunks of that juicy meat.

"Huh, I was just joking about food in the wall back there, this castle really is spooky. Wish it were chili fries, but these ain't half bad," Ben says with his mouth full, "Anyone else hungry?"

Ben looks at the books with Sera, talking with his mouth full.

"Even Brainstorm would need at least a slight hint before he can solve this lickety split. Hmm... maybe the pattern is something in this room. Blue, red, black. Hmm... if it refers to how the colour of the sky went today, maybe Blue-Red-Black or Blue-Black-Red is the way, and any book will do for the switch."

As Sebastian would learn, nothing in particular would happen upon trying to burn the books. Even though it felt like they might have been made of something to the degree of wood, they didn't seem to catch fire, whether by some magical protection imposed upon by Dracula or Faust, or some other cause. Whatever the solution might have been to the puzzle behind the books, it wasn't found in burning them.

Speaking of possible enchantments placed on the bookshelf, Sera would have a somewhat difficult time trying to look through the shelf with her ability, being able to detect little more than that the solution lied in the three clean shelves of red, blue, and black books.

All the meanwhile, Constantine gave Ben a side-eyed look.

"Do you... even know where that thing's been?" He asked, referring to the pork chop he found in the wall.

Clearing his throat, he held his chin, examining the bookshelves as well. "When the kid over there read out the journal aloud," Constantine began, gesturing briefly toward Ciel, "Poor bloke seemed to figure out that there's some significance about the number four in relation to these, but... Hmm," he continued, before trailing off in thought, "Maybe we might be overthinking it a bit?"

"The number four..." Libra would attempt to move every fourth book on the clean shelves, hoping to solve the riddle that way.

"Ooh, that's awfully pretty..." Sumia inspected the skeleton's light blue robe out of curiosity.

There wasn't anything special about the skeleton's cloak, except that it had... lots and lots of dust. A natural effect of being there, untouched for God knows how long.

As the fourth book on the clean shelves (which were one in the same as the blue, red, and black shelves), an audible mechanical CLICK could be heard, but... little more than that. As far as anyone could see, nothing much had changed, as observed in the diary.

As Mike looked around for candles, he would find plenty, a total of eight to be exact, lined up against one wall, still burning brightly with fresh wax.

Libra remembered the cut off line in the journal. "Mike, could you please move the fourth candle in that line?"
